Hello everybody, well i finally get this phone and i have some questions, i have been too into developing before but there are some differences with this phone.
Okay, lets start:
This phone has 2.2(froyo) my carrier has just finished the actualization for 2.3. so I NEED THE OFFICIAL LG ROM, WHAT I MEAN WITH OFFICIAL IS THAT WHEN THERE ARE OFFICIAL UPDATES, IT WILL APPEAR IN THE PHONE
Can i flash roms with the stock phone recovery without been root user?
Wich are the best official baseband and kernel for the phone? Does it change the performance?
In case you can help me you have to know im from argentina ( latinamerica ) just in case there are differents roms, bb, and kernels for every part of the world.
Thanks and good luck to everybody

1) you cannot flash Custom ROMs if you are not rooted....
2)Phone Recovery is available only with root and with CWM
3)Different regions, service providers and devices have different responses for BBs. Generally, the most popular ones are V20q, V20C and V20S for the stock ROMs and the corresponding RILs
4)Performance will change with different Kernels, BBs....such as Voodoo, Battery performance, Scrolling etc
If you like the stock based ROM, then I would suggest you to reach out for Django Manouche 1.5beta4 ROM which is on XDA Server...check for the thread....and choose Stefan's , Flix's or Spica's Kernel.....each are valuable in their own ways.
Hope it helps you...CHEERS mate...you have one of the best devices in your hand

Thanks you both but does those roms show when there are new updates?
Also in case I install this one, whats the difference between this one and my 20a? Does it have italian bloatware?
Thanks
I will guess I will root my phome just for backups and chainfire
One last question,if I install this rom and have another bb or kernel? Will it work bad?
How do I install those roms, by cwm?
Good luck

you have to root your phone mate...thats the first step in liberating ur phone.
STOCK ROM usually has a lot of bloatware and Custom ROMs are slimmer by removing unnecessary apps....so you can go for a Custom ROM without worrying about bloatware.
I had suggested you a custom ROM and this does not have any issues with different BB or Kernel...only thing u have to keep in mind....use Kernel made for Stock ROMs.I am using a V20C Baseband with the DJ 1.5beta4 ROM which is based on V20S sources...check my signature and you will have more idea.I am using my own Kernel too.
for CM7/CM9, you can use any BB but the RIL has to be only from Froyo...means V10 series RIL.
Custom ROMs are mostly flashed using CWM. Updates- some of the ROMs are updated by ROM manager....but my opinion is to download and flash manually. Some of the ROMs do not use the OTA tool for updation(honestly....this is better)
IMPORTANTLY MY FRIEND, read through the opening posts from custom ROM and Stock Kernel threads....and use search....you will know more information.
Hope this helps. Thanks and take care

Hello,
Sorry for this very basic question, I am just wondering what is the difference between a Kernel and a ROM? I see in the development forum there are lots of new Kernels, what are these actually optimizing except underclocking or undervolting (understand that terminology). I am also wondering if the Kernels are specific for the original Nexus One 2.1 Android or can you install for example Modaco or Cyan ROM and then a different random Kernel?
Thanks!
To my understanding, a kernel is what directly interacts with the hardware. Every OS has this, but it's more customizable on our phones since it's based on Linux. The Rom contains the OS itself, and the software and file structure therein. The kernel even can tell the OS how fast the processor goes and how much juice to use from the battery.
Hope that makes sense, as I'm no expert. You can mix and match the two as far as I know. I've mixed them, anyway.
Halorin,
Based on what you said, with my stock vibrant ROM 2.1 JI6 update, it is possible to change the kernel or install another kernel (like the CM kernel)?

That is really a question better suited to the rom 's development thread, but in general yes you can flash a different kernel. Some kernel/rom combinations work better than others, but you really wont know until you try. Get comfortable with nandroid backups and start trying out different kernel combinations until you find one you like.
Usually most custom roms will include a kernel but they usually have tweaks like coding for 720p, oc, and audio tweaks and what not. Alsways do a nandroid back up and start exploring. When flashing kernels always wipe, I think their are exceptions but its best to wipe just in case. Browse XDA, download a kernel from your phone browser, rom manager install from SD, should be in your downloads folder, backup and wipe, repeat until your phone does what you want.

which is the better to install???
Thank you your post..
but i can't understand clearly.
so.,
which one is better to install NewRom / Kernal. for android phones.
Neither one is better it just depends on what you want to do.
If you want to totally change over your phone to look and function differently then you need to flash a ROM if you just want to keep the same look but want to enable lets say overclocking then flash an overclocked kernel. If it has to do with the hardware mostly then it's probably something that the kernel can change. Although like mentioned above if you flash a ROM most of the time it will come with a custom kernel.

ROMs and kernels are two separate things that have two separate functions. Neither is better than the other, but they do complement each other.

I know both Dude Random21 and codesplice have gone into this, but to try and give a bit more info...
The kernel is kinda like the nervous system of the body. It directly interacts with the hardware (which is how it is able to adjust CPU speed) and it is what allows the ROM to function.
The ROM is the rest of the body. Every other aspect of the phone. In fact, most ROMs include custom kernels. Various ROMs give you various features/enhancements/bugfixes. You will probably notice the biggest change in your phone if you load a custom ROM. Most people load the custom kernels to help with battery life as a lot of them allow you to lower the phones minimum processing speed from 245Mhz to 128MHz.
The ROM can change so many different aspects of how the phone works. There is CyanogenMod which is based off of stock Android with a lot of tweaks, bugfixes, and new features added. There is also MIUI, which is similar to the iOS style (not the same, but much closer than stock Android), and then there are a ton others out there.
Then which Rom is best for my samsung galaxy s???
so i am using froyo.jpjpg on my galaxys.
i want to flash new Rom with upgaraded to gingerbread.
can i flash only rom../ kernal also.
which is best Rom for samsung galaxys.
cynogenmod, miui, .?????
battery drain is very fast now ian running rom/kernal.

Nandbackup + Rom & Kernel
One question: when I do a backup with CWM, it is the Nandroid backup you talk about, correct...? Same thing? So, if I do a backup with CWM, it's a backup only of the ROM, or also the stock Kernel...? Imagine that I do a Rom (GingerDX for example), and flash with a custom Kernel.... If things go bad and I do a restore from my backup (stock) CWM, what do I restore? Rom, or Rom + (stock) Kernel...?
Yes, a backup that is done in ClockworkMod (or Amon_RA) is considered a nandroid backup. And this takes a complete snapshot of your system. Your ROM, your kernel, your apps and your data are all inlcuded. The only thing that isn't included is the fat partition on your sdcard. So if things go bad and you restore your nandroid backup, it will go back to however it was when you made the backup.
thanks a lot. reading this thread clear up a lot of things
Hi!
I am currently running Lite'ning ROM 6.1. XXKH3 Kernel version 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ [email protected] #20 on SGSII. Phew.
I've tried a lot of ROMS including MIUI, villain, galmetMIUI ICS version . I like Lite'ning ROM because it gave me the least (virtually Nil) problems (FCs/ reboots) and has almost all the features I need (TV-out that's missing from MIUI, good camera with panorama mode, Recording mode in phone). However I miss the CIFS feature. Is it because the kernel does not support it? Can I get CIFS support if I flash another kernel? Any suggesstions on which Kernel should I flash? I realise that this ROM is pretty old now so Can I get additional features with a newer Kernel.

Hello...
Since there isn't a P990H specific forum or ROMs available, I thought I would my questions here:
1. Besides the baseband (i.e. RF) side, are the P990 and the P990H same? How about P999?
2. If #1 is true, I assume I can use the custom ROMs for either P990 or P999 for P990H. I looked the CM zip files, and there isn't a baseband update included, so I am inclined to think I am right. Does anyone know for sure?
3. What would you consider the most stable custom ROM at the moment? Modaco FR19, or CM7? I am after the ASOP experience as much as possible.
I just bought a P990H (to be used with AT&T SIM), when it arrives, I'll be diving into getting a custom ROM installed and wanted to make sure I don't end up with an expensive brick.
Your help is much appreciated.
As far as I know, most of the p990 Roms and kernels are not compatible with the P999. You should see the pages of the roms you would like and ask their coders. if they are compatible.
OK... so, if the P990 ROMs aren't compatible with the P999 ROMs, how about the P990H? I've seen people with P990H who flashed P990 ROMs, but I am not sure if these are limited to a specific set of ROMs or all.

Thanks for the confirmation! Did you just follow the same instructions as the P990H for loading custom ROMs?
I would love to hear your assessment of the Gr2. Is there any glaring thing that doesn't work?
By the way, are you using the stock baseband, or did you update it? If you updated, which one would you recommend?

Everything is the same! No special instructions to follow
And everything is working on this rom and it's been pretty stable for an alpha the only issue i had it was because i didn't wipe before and after the rom installation.
There is also a Gr3 comming at the end of the month so it's only getting better

No change on the baseband, i use the stock one
From the research i made it look like the only difference between these phones are the frequency they can work on (yours is on 850/1900 i think) other than that i don't think the modem on those phones are different.
i was looking for some info as well. does flashing a custom rom change the baseband or 3G bands of the p990h?

No, if you dont update the baseband (and you shouldn't) then you'll be okay.. You should probably also save the RIL from original ROM (and put back to the new one) so that everything is working as it should. the RIL is located in /system/lib/lge-ril.so
Thanks For the info guys
Hey XDA
My friend is just a casual person who dont know anything about smartphones/especially not roms/kernels.
He've an o2x and have several problems with it.
The stock rom is slow(havent tried 2.3 though, since it isnt possible to root then) and his currently ROM, CM7, isnt too stable - he keep loosing internet connection, the flash app crashes, and several FCs(and yeah, I've tried reinstalling and fix permissions and stuff like that)
So atm I am looking for a good and completely stable ROM for his o2x, since he is tired of all the problems.
What can you suggest? - Is the new 2.3 worth it, or is there a better rom? - I have to mention, his CM7 rom is 1 month old, so it isnt up-to-date.
I am personally using SGSII so I dont know anything at all about O2X, so I have to ask you guys.
Thanks in advance!
Well, I think that if you wanna go custom, you must be in the touch with updates.
There is pretty good custom rom`s and kernel out there, but if you just want to install and forget (no backuping, flashing, restoring...), I would go with stock rom, 2.3. is ok.
Everyone have their favorite, mine is: stock 20L, rooted, with custom Spica`s HP Kernel and Performance Pack and there is no problems with phone and Spica gives boost to stock rom.
There is some interesting poll too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350761

As I said, I dont know much about o2x, since it is not my phone, but is there any problems with 2.3? Is it faster than 2.2 and have they fix'ed all the FC he got with 2.2?
The problem is that, if I unroot and update to 2.3 I can't get back, so therefore I want to be 100% sure.
I know I have to keep it updated, and I will do that, just not 100% updated all the time. But if the rom and kernel is stable, its no big deal.
Thank you for your answer, I will wait to decide after a few more replies
edit: thx for the link, I will check it out asap!
It looks like CM7 is the right choice though...Maybe I should just update it and see if it fix his problems?
CM7 is the only one what I have not tried from the list, lol.
What do you think that you can`t go back? You can do with your phone everything you want . You can go to 2.3 then flash back to 2.2. Rooting is not a problem, there is very good guide how to do that, if you have a backup to flash. And there are all versions of stock roms to download.

Other suggestions to stable roms/kernels?
I think the best way is that you try some roms by yourself. When you have done this one time its very easy and next time you can do it much faster. I'm testing GR5 at the moment. Its realesed today for everybody.

And if you are not satisfied with performance you can flash a new kernel like spica's.

i installed miui yesterday it seems pretty good n way faster than the stock froyo
couldnt test the stock 2.3 as it wasnt available yet when i last checked for updates
I have tested probably every rom on this forum and in my opinion CM 7.1 stable is the best choice. Since yesterday i'm testing miui 1.11.18 and it seems to be very good as well. No freezes and bsods so far. But miui is based on CM so it has to be good With the SwiftExtreme kernel it's really fast. Battery is also good on both of them - much better then stock 2.3.

If you want to check the newest version for your phone, use this link:

But replace YOUR_IMEI_HERE with (funnily enough) your phone's IMEI.

GPS troubles with Optimus 2x MIUI ROM
Newbie here and I feel like I am the only one that is having GPS problems here. I rooted my phone due to Wind mobile being extra slow with the updates for my phone and I cannot seem to get the GPS to work. Please help as it does not lock on. I checked the GPS config and see that it is set up for T-Mobile but I don't know which one I should use for my provider as the original Froyo did not have this option.
I also have troubles trying other ROMS as MIUI have seemed to lock me into theirs. Error when I try to load another ROM several times.
I'm also a newbie to the O2x,
I rooted and flashed cm7 then "[ROM] Rebuild of Leaked V20o Gingerbread Update" really easy!

There are so many 2.3.4 official LG 2x rom on the internet, all start with "V20..".
Generally speaking, the letter at the end means the location.
v20d is one of Asian LG official 2.3.4 rom distribute in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
I only know that the latest version now in Hong Kong is v20e.
I am sure you will google a list of LG 2x official rom if you want to.

That's why I am now still using official "modified" v20e (Hong Kong) rom with the latest Hourse Power Kernel.
Just bought o2x.
I got home i root install miui.
Im a lg user thats why its so easy. Hehehe
Read the roll up sticky thread at dev sections. Its so easy.

I Have Rooted my Note with Odin and are on kernel KK5.. Im thinking of install a new kernel and getting a custom rom for improve the speed, battery and hopefully no lag after reading different topics here, its pretty hard too choose? anyone know for sure whats the best out?
Look at them all, read the responses, then pick one. There is no such thing as "best".
Agreed!
Its what best suits your needs. CF-Root may be considered as the most stable and close to stock as possible with just Root.
That may be what you want to start with.
The best ones are: of your considering and best choice to fit your device
yes there is not a best rom (never ask about which is the best rom)
there are different roms
some uses some devices/cpu drivers/controllers/governors some not, some are lighter some are more heavy
some looks quite similar to stock and some others are completely different
some boost speed others boost battery usage
i think that for make a good choice 1st element is to see who made the rom: there are some devs who have been tweacking/writing roms for years on older devices and have a strong strong reputation
2nd element very important is to check the comments of the people who tried it on the threads: read 1st page of the post and then go to last page and read the 10/20 last replies
usually for noobs like you and me the best is to go for a well tested rom without 2 many problems
i wouldnt dare to install cyanogenmod 9 so far....
anyway if i were you i would try the rocket rom vers 20 and then upgrade to rocket rom 21
this rom has a long development and its quite reliable
being .21 version many bugs have been amended and the dev is very active and nice.
2 go for reliable rom as beginner is the most intelligent choice!
hope to have been helpful

I recommend him to install cyanogenmod 9 for an adventurous/risky feeling !!! lol
Hi, my name is g4ndr1k and I'm a flash addict.
I've tried almost every ROM and now I am on DarkyROM. Hopefully it would be my last before ICS.
My other favorites are Cassie's, CheckROM, KingDroid and Romow.
For giving a precise answer (of course, only IMHO):
CheckRom v5 with either CF Root oder SpeedMod Kernel.
But, in general: use what suits your needs best. How? take a look at every ROM.
Honestly as of now the custom ROM's dont really stand out that much compared to the stock ones, on a day to day basis with a blind test no one can tell the difference.
I was looking for smoothness, stability and the minimum lag without changing a lot in UI, stock LA4 deodexed with fm 2.0 kernel was my best choice after trying several roms, I'm satisfied with what i have before the ICS comes out.

if you already rooted and installed CWM recovery, then no need to flash using Odin.
just copy Zip (ROM) to SD card and reboot in CWM recovery then flash.
(Flashing Custom ROM using Odin(PC) adds binary counter)

Im actually starting too wonder if id used Odin.. This is the package i used: DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su
but anyway, i dont think i have CWM recovery installed, i have downloaded Rom Manager, but when i push the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. I can only choose between a few samsung choices like SII but no Galaxy Note?
Currently on rocket 21 but id highly recommend checkROM v5. Seems the most stable with superb performance and battery. Flash abyss kernel 3.5 and overclock and undervolt to 1600. Guarantee you'll love it. With checkrom you can install missing Samsung apps from kitchen and a variety of mods to suit your needs. Would recommend ics keyboard if you use fingers to type or swype if you use the pen a lot.
