Increase RAM using Swap File and Swap Partition
Followed the guide in the above link but can't get swap to work. Rom is 2.3.6 Stock Rooted and BusyBox installed. But keeps failing. Has anyone been successful with Swapper 2 on stock rooted firmware? Before anyone says don't bother or not worth it, I would like to say irrespective I would like to try and see for myself.
Swap needs compatible kernel which stock doesn't have ..flash cf-root then use swap and kill sdcard at the speed of light

swap kills your sd card !!!! real fast !!!! killed mine!
though it did giv me some performance boost
Swap partition will be used as ram.
So, "n" no of read and write will happen depending upon the swapiness value.
It will spoil your memory card.
And another thing is your memory card shoud be very fast to maintain performance (higher class).

Kingston SD Cards come with a lifetime warranty so if it does kill it, they should replace it. It's a shame that you require cf-root because I don't like the fact that CF-Root changes the startup logo and add Clockwork Mod which my idea of stock is not. Is there any other ways?

Yes they do replace it.But many people dont have backups of their data so for them losing sd card is a real trouble. Now,No stock recovery works after rooting. It is unable to mount partitions so most of CWM flashable packages wont work.still,If you want to have stock recovery back then head to dev. section, find the thread for stock recovery and flash it.
Wooooow boy r u sure you're in the current time. Its 2012 now. . Jokes and no think about it, would it reasonable for a manufactury to do that? think about it in a bussines way. For the moment if you feel like you need more ram just create a swap partition. class 6 or above SD card is suggested and don't worry about the SD lifetime so much you r not gonna have the same phone or SD for like 20 years anyway. R u ? Let me know if you need help with partitioning your SD and I'd appreciate it if you press the thanks button. Also I have a swap partion on my SD its much better and I haven't ran into problems. Its true that it decreases the lifetime but it's not like what you think

Well I have replaced Kingston SD Cards in the past under manufacturer warranty without any problems and as for losing data, that is also not an issue for me thanks to dropbox and automatic camera uploader. As for other phones, the apps, contacts, etc are backed up by google so it is not a big of an issue as many are making it...well at least for me anyway. I just want to give it a go but at the same time I don't want to leave stock. Please don't ask me why as it is self preference and I have explained in other threads why I prefer stock over custom firmware and really do not wish to go into a debate regarding this.
You talk about a Swap Partition. I was under the impression for that a custom Kernal is required. As I am on stock, I would have thought that running the created swap file at boot should do the trick without having to partition a bit of the SD card to Linux Swap. Is that not the whole idea of the Swap File as opposed to a Swap partition?

Hi buddies ;p
I have one question...how can i enable swap partition on my ace?
I have kph rom + ext4 + CWM + cf-root 3.7
I try to use swapper ane swapper 2 app...
Swapper 2 doesn't work good...it's crashed on create a swap file
Swapper seems that he work well..create swap file well then i reboot my phone and it still doesnt work...on setcpu swap has 0kb...
Are there any ways for do it?
Get CF-Root Kernel b80, DarkTremor App2SD for CF-Root Kernel and A2SDGUI from Market for easy setup.
All can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158197
Using a SDcard with swap partition will only cause lags unless and until you have a class 6 or greater SDcard,
Also Having swap partition on sdcard is not good for the health of the SDcard has no. of read and writes increases dramatically
yeah i know that the health of our memory decreases but if i had a 6 class of sd this swap help me for performance my pda or not?
Is this useful?does 4th class is sufficient?
Hmm i have apps2sd and in the tweak manager i didn't selected "Dt: auto start" and i dont have a dtapps2sd script...so i have to install it?
Can i upgrade my kernel from b70 to b82?
btw: which kernel is the best b78-b80 or b82?For upgrade to b80 i have to flash this file CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b80_boot.zip or i have to flash it with odin?I dont understund very well....

There are many 2.3.4 roms... gingerreal, flash... in this case use the latest cf-root
CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b82.Just flash the zip. Does not suport swap or BLN for now.
Install also the updated ext4 Manager.
what is it bln?
Which is better b80 or b82?
If i install b80, swap start with him?
thx for replies ;p
BLN is button light notification. It uses your button lights as would LED of other phones work, which is to blink when you have message or missed call.
B82 doesn't support that nor does it support swap.

I had no problem using my class4 with swap partition, encountered no noticeable lag.
Had to remove it though before flashing KPO.

One thing to note: lower class SD card is probably going to perform better because the random access on lower class SD cards is better than Class 10. Class 10 is generally better throughput at the expense of random access. Since you should rarely be swapping, it's usually a waste of time. Better off using a RAM tweak such as Supercharger.
i upgraded to b80 but swap still doesn't work...why?
Did you make a swap partition on your SD Card?

clockwork recovery -> advanced -> partition sd card
I'm using official CM 7.2 and also have the problem of low memory (damn; my older HTC Wildfire (v1) never had this issue; this older/slower budgetphone has much more memory on board)
I made a swappartition; it cannot be mounted as swappartition... by neither swapper2 or swapper.
Since i'm using S2E i actually wanted to use the internal memory of my phone for the swapfile (or tried that one too, cuz it's not being used when loading apps...) but i couldn't save my .SWP file over there. Also on my fat partition (1st partition on the sd card) i wasn't able to get my swapfile working... (it was being created, but that's all....)
When i was using the nightlies of CM 7 i was hoping this was an issue they would resolve when the final was released; as CM7 on my wildfire has no problem at all to use swapfiles...
Anyone info on how to get swapfiles when using CM7 (official)?
hi,
i am running CM 7.2.0 RC5.1 KANG on my galaxy mini.
after fighting myself through endless threads i still cannot find the answer to my question. or maybe i have missed something or it was too complicated for me to understand.
many of those memory increasing posts are only for stock roms.
and i want to increase it with cm7 on the phone. is that possible?
i intend to update to the latest official CM in the near future. would it be easier with a clean install?
please share some information ... i have only 20 MB left
Use any app2sd program you prefer.
Most famous and used are s2e, link2sd, etc
As i was on galaxy mini, i used mebiteks rc0 v0.7 cyanogenmod in combination with link2sd and a 512 mb extended partition. It worked flawless.
Just pic your choice and try.
TIP: Make a backup of your current rom. In case something goes wrong you can go back to last state.
Good luck.
thanks for the quick reply.
i am still a bit confused.
in some threads they write: don't use program X, others say never use program Y and some even say never ever use progam Z.
some members report bootloops, some get instant cancer or die right away.
any clues what works "best" with my rom or do i have to go via K.O. System?
What program works best depends on the rom you use.
I believe S2E works fine on that rom.
sorry, perhaps i didn't make myself clear enough.
i have only 5 apps installed (additionally to the cm7 apks)
the other 60+ programs are installed on the sd card.
my question was: how can i INCREASE the 178 mb ram on the galaxy mini.
let's say ... 1 GB ... that would be fine.
as i have mentioned before, those scripts or progs are available for stock rom only.

Practically speaking, you cannot increase the 178mb internal memory.. that is a hardware limitation.. what we can do instead is alter how android utilize the internal memory. If you want to see 1GB as your internal memory, amarullz and ungaze scripts can do that. You must have a 1GB sd-ext partition on your sdcard for you to use this scripts. Recommend amarullz though coz ungaze makes things laggy.. to know more and how to use these scripts, do a search in the dev section..

you go to samsung centre and blame it there...
First take a backup of ur sd card content .. As it will wipe of ur sd card !
Go into cwm - select sd card partition - select how much u want to increase ur internal memory-select swap value 64 mb -and then reboot
This is the easiest way to increase internal memory

Hi. After weeks of collecting needed apps for my galaxy note I checked them and backuped them by Titanium Backup. From all of them I choose around 400 games and aps.
After that I clean my phone and install new rom. Unfortunately I have problems with free space on my phone, so I am thinking of increasing it somehow.
Right now I have 1,97GB memory ( + around 10 GB sd card) and when it is full ( f.ex after titanium backup restore) every app goes on sd card ( right?). I would like to increase it so I will have f.ex. 4 gb + 8gb sd card. Is it possible? I tried by CWM but it is without changes. How can I do something like that and is it possible? Is there going to be no problem if I will like to change rom or kernel on another one? It will always be 4 gb ( if I will be abble to change it) ?
It is much easier to use some app to move installed apps to sdcard. Still if you really like to increase the size of data partition, then can use my repartition guide, in post 12. Cheers.

Oh it looks little bit complicated... But I need to read it all first. Maybe there is some easier way to partition it?
The key thing is using adb and parted to remove Partition 10 and 11 then create 10 with the size of 4 gb and the rest is for 11. Name them and go to cwm to format data.
Parted is part of busybox so if you have root then parted is aldeady there no need to flash the kernel mentioned in the guide. Still, if you are not sure then use app2sd is easier. Cheers.

Anotherway is to use pit magic to modify pit file. Still, custom pit should be use to recover emmc brick phone. For your case adb method should be safer, maybe.

Thank You. I will try.
Hi everybody, I am currently trying to solve a problem with not having enough space for my applications on the N7000.
I consider myself a power user that uses many applications, and I do not really understand why a phone with 16GB internal storage and the possibility of an micro sd card, which I have allocates so little space to applications.
I have searched a lot on the internet and on this forum, and the only thing I could find was how to swap the internal memory with the micro sd card, which is not really what I would like to do. I trust more in the internal memory, and I prefer to have all my media (pictures, videos and documents on my micro sd card).
So the question is, can I increase the size of the data partition from 1.97GB to lets say 3 or even 4GB?
If yes, how could I do that?
Currently I am using 1.71 GB / 1.97 GB and I still get not enough space for applications when I am trying to update something like Facebook or any plus 20MB application.
Could anyone explain why this is happening?
I don't know any way to extend the internal data partition but in order to get more storage for apps I can recommend you the app Link2SD which uses a second partition on your external sd card. You can get it for free from play store and it's not really complicated. All you need to do is create that second partition on your sd card. I'd give it a try if I were you.

This post explains how:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1887864
You need at least noob knowledge of adb (ie copy-pasting commands).
The second command was
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
rather than
parted /dev/block/mmcblock0
I've just done it on my Note.

Hi Please can you help me with repartitioning my samsung gal gtn7000 internal storage for me ?
Thanks
Hi,
I have the Note GT-N7000 with Android stock 4.1.2 and i'm not rooted.
I have a problem with my 1,97 GB partition which is full.
Does this method require root ?
I ever use root + Link2SD on anothers devices. Which methode do you recommend for the note to free up space ? Link2SD or this method ?
Are there others solutions ?
Thanks
I would go for rooting, repartitioning and installing a new kernal that supports trim and a new up to date ROM. I chose this method for my wifes N7000 as being able to TRIM the emmc chips has really brought it back to life, almost no lag normally, just like when it was new. I installed the latest NightOwl (it's really just Cyanogenmod but with extra bug fixes etc). First you need to repartition as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642299 though I followed a procedure (as I had already installed CM11 I had to go back to stock first) called "How to re-partition Galaxy Note and install Android 5.1.1", there is a link to it on one of the XDA threads I mention in this post and it is on the net (sorry can't find link now). Then I flashed NightOwl http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note/development/rom-t2938649 . This Kernal & ROM are patched so risk of bricking is not any(much) higher than normal I think (though you do this at your own risk). Also being able to choose smaller GApps package further reduced bloat for me.
The only drawback is if you use the Samsung apps a lot you will not be able to install then on new ROM as you need the Samsung framework, but there are altenative apps for all of them, though I guess if you need to import actual data into new apps that may not always be possible.
Just make sure you backup all your personal files, like whatsapp photos etc that are stored on internal SD (sdcard0) as this will be wiped. Also your IMEI settings (with an IMEI app), address books, calender etc
No need to worry about ROOT as you can easily turn it on and off in developer options, I only turn it on when I need to run an app that requires it, then turn off again for added security.
Thanks for your answer, i will check the repartition method you linked.

Can anybody explain for me the disadvantages of swapping?
Will it reduce my SD crard lifetime?
I'm on PAC ROM and using Ram expander app for swapping and now my phone has a great multitasking and I dont have any problem about lack of Ram.

It will reduce your SD lifetime, since it use part of card as RAM, so it is in use all the time. In the other way u use a swap file or swap partition? (Dont know in wich way Ram expander work). When you use file it use sdcard filesystem. When you use swap partition it will use swap filesystem which is designed to work with writing/reading space all the time so I think its better.
You must have in mind that adding to high size of swap can slow your device down, while system will want to use swap at first. So its not recommended to use swap higher than your real RAM size.

I think this app use a swap file. Can you tell me how can I enable swap partition? and what size do you suggest? Is 256mb good?
And in your opinion how long my SD card lifetiime will last ? (nearly)
In total I think the advantage of swapping is more than the disadvantages of it! Now I don't have any launcher redraws and also music won't be stopped while internet browsing+ a great multitasking that I didn't have ever!

Bro can u tell me does ram expander works on other custom roms too such as mrsteves cm11, official cm11, etc.
It didn't work for me on two roms mentioned above.
Can u please share ur ram expander settings i mean the swap directory u selected. So i can try once again & go back to kitkat.
Iam using it on stock rom + with too many xposed modules. No lag at all
Talking about the life of sdcard. It will affect it but to a very less extent.
If u use a class 10 memory card u will not encounter any problems.
Iam using this app for more than 5 months on SP and in other phone for over a year.
I still didn't face problem with my sd card.

As I told Im using it on PAC Rom and I have not tested it on other roms.
I selected /mnt/media-rw/sdcard1 as my directory and the value of swappiness and DriverCache are 50 & 8192 for me. ( what these settings means?)
these settings are default and I didnt change them.
Now plz share your setting like swappiness and DriveCache value and perfectKernel checkbox and also swap size. definitely these settings affect on SD card lifetime and help me a lot.
My settings in stock rom swapiness 40, minfree 68mb & drive cache 8192 (can't change this one). All are default values didn't change them
And the most important one SwapDir storage/removable/sdcard1using 513mb swap file.

If this is a kernel related problem you can try cm11 for locked bootloader that is based on stock kernel. ( PAC ROM is a stock kernel based ROM too)
I think so. None of apps work for me. When I will find my old sdcard i will check how about swap partition. If that will not work it have to be kernel related. I cant change whole system right now (to check cm for LB) since its my daily use phone and i make some holidays right now. Maybe in two weeks.
