[Q] Slim ICS + Semaphore 125sc, no GPS - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched a lot for this and haven't come across anyone with the same problem, so I wanted to ask. I've tried flashing different kernels and modems, but it hasn't changed anything. I'll try to flash a different ROM next, but I don't know if that's the issue or not, so I wanted to go ahead and ask the question.
Model: Captivate (SGH-I897)
Android: 4.0.4
Modem: I9000UGKG3
Kernel: 3.0.17-Sepmaphore_ICS_1.2.5sc (#20 PREEMT Jun 20)
Build: 4.0
Mod: Slim_ICS_4.0.4
I have an I9000 modem for Slim, which as far as I can tell is correct since it requires a modem compatible with CM9. I've tried a few different kernels, all of which I found recommended across various Slim discussion forums.
My problem: The GPS logo won't even show up. It is enabled in the config (verified several times). GPS doesn't appear to work at all and won't turn on when suppose to be activated (i.e. with GPS Status, Google Maps, etc.)
From what I understand, the modem has nothing to do with the GPS. What about the kernel? Note that my GPS worked OK on stock Gingerbread. The update to ICS and over to a I9000 settings has killed it, and I can't figure out why.
Is there something obvious I'm missing? I'll flash a different ROM later tonight... the GPS is the only thing that really doesn't work. (I mean, it never worked great, but now it won't even act like it is coming on.) Suggestions?

Take a look in the modems thread in the Development section - follow the link and grab one of the modems specifically for CM7/CM9/MIUI. I don't know that I9000 modems will work properly with ICS roms.

Great, thanks for the help. Not sure what the problem was, but I reflashed with JK4 and now everything is working like it should be again. Thanks for the help!

[Q] poor voice quality on certain roms

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10882057&postcount=1751
I have tried Perception and Cognition. I have tried all combinations of kernals and modems but no matter what I do I get very bad voice problems (dropped words, static etc.) when I use my cappy as a phone. Could the problem be in the phone itself, and if not, does anybody have any suggestions.

I wanted to reply to this post but I couldn't because I dont have enough posts to comment in the development forum, so I appologize if this is in the wrong location.
Just wanted to say that I'm experiencing the same issue as richsale with Cognition. Friends were complaining that my voice was very staticy and unclear.
I flashed back to stock using Odin and everything sounds normal now. So it seems like this is not a hardware issue.
Has anyone faced similar issues with some roms?
Thanks
Most likely its a modem issue - see the modem thread in dev section..

Try using a ROM that has JK4 modem.

So I reflashed Congnition 3.04 and it's working now.. Before I was running it with GB's kernal, dont know what modem. That may have been the culprate.
I have Baseband I896UXJL1 right now
IIRC, Cognition is based on stock Captivate, while GB is a reoriented I9000 kernel. To run it, you'll need to replace the stock modem with an I9000 equivalent (JK4/JL2/JL3/KP1 all have ardent supporters), otherwise you'll run into voice problems. I believe it has to do with hardware vs. software noise cancellation on the two devices.

So as long as my kernel and modem match I should be ok?
I'd like to flash a faster kernel on top of cognition. Perhaps SpeedMod or GB.

[Q] Darky`s 9.4 to 10.2.1?

It's been awhile since I flashed any roms. Here is where I stand?
Samsung Galaxy S I9000
Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband version I9000XXJQ1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number Darky's v9.4.XWJS8
I just did a factory reset as I had planned on dropping it off to get unlocked so I can switch carriers, however found out about the "Galaxy S Unlock" app.
Just downloaded the following apps:
Darky's Rom
Busy Box Installer
Rom Manager
Voodoo Control
Can I go directly from Darky's 9.4 to 10.2.1? Any other apps I may need for the transition. I did the original hacking 6 months ago and haven't retained anything.
Any tips, advice would be helpful
Thanks!!
i think you are asking for trouble flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 in the manner you are thinking.
I would odin flash 10.2 RE doing the full wipe.
Then you want 10.2.1 V2
you can flash that with darkyrom tools from the market
remember to use titanium backup to save all your apps
Thanks, that is exactly what I did after a little research again. Had to take a research break as my brain was getting frustrated with all the information but i got it working.
I do have another problem though. I have my I9000 and blackberry 9300. Both unlocked. For some reason my I9000 will not get reception in Northern Alberta where I work. I've used sim cards from telus/virgin mobile/koodo. Blackberry works fine (full bars), but I9000 doesnt get reception. It does however, work fine when i get back into town.
I'm assuming this is a modem issue? Any suggestions. I'm currently running Darky 10.2.1 V2.
i am looking into that issues also.
I think i have unlocked my phone but have only tried using a wind mobile SIM....
Hopefully i can figure this one out next time i see my cousin and i can try his SIM.
Me and my wife are both on Bell.
Oh and your Darky ROM is old
10.2.2 is the newest stable out.
But if you dont mind flashing the JVT RE edition is faster and works great

[Q] Installed CM 7.1; Have mis-matched modem and no HSUDPA.

I installed CM 7.1 and noticed that downloads show as H but uploads are showing up with 3G. I have an SGH-I897 but have noticed that my baseband is T959TLJL3, an i9000 baseband. Is this a good situation? Is there a more appropriate modem I should be using? I've also noticed Tasker is having problems consistently switching between 2G and 3G.
I've also lost all access to the service menus; is this due to the baseband or CM? I'm not sure if that's code Samsung open sourced (and thus could be in CM) these menus or if I have to temporarily switch back to stock rom to access those menus?
Thanks,
BB45
CM7 is based on the i9000 roms so they use i9000 modems, which is perfectly ok for captivate. you can try other CM7 modems from the sticky thread in dev section for better speed. There is not much difference between i897 and i9000 modems except H symbol tho...i guess service menus u r talking about are Samsung specific....CM7 is AOSP based rom..so any Samsung feature wont work on it....

[Q] Problem with call sound quality

Hey guys,
my girlfriend has a i9000 Galaxy S which has a lot of problems with call sound quality. When Incall the sound starts normally and then suddenly you hear some kind of noises, like radio interference (all kinds of creeking and various sounds). It will start and stop randomly during the call. This happens no matter where she is (in the apartment, out in the open, etc).
She is currently on stock Android 2.3.3 (non-rooted)
Baseband I9000XXJVO
Kernel [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVH
I wanted to ask how I can fix the problem? I have an Optimus 2X and I'm comfortable with it, have changed roms, flashed basebands etc on it, but I'm not sure if its the same for the Galaxy (although I suppose it should be similar).
Do I need to change baseband, ROM, Kernel (or all three?). and if so, which ones should I choose? She is an average user so she doesnt need something with high performance, just something easy and stable. I especially didnt see a thread for basebands and how to change them.
All your help is very appriciated. Thank you
I just saw the thread in this forum (was looking at the developers forum before) and saw the post with firmwares, basebands and instructions), but the question still stands:
what combination do I choose of baseband and rom, and do I take the stock rom or one of the custom ones (has to be very stable)?
Thanks guys
Guys? Noone?
Rather than messing about flashing
Modems, I would take the opportunity and flash stock jvt or the latest stock jvu and see if this fixes the problem, if it doesn't, there is probably a fault with the phone.

That is just the rom, or?
Yeah, just flash a whole new rom, jvu is the latest and is pretty good.

Sorry...
But since it was from a modified ROM phone i was thinking it was here.
Moved the thread
Try re flashing ur modem.
I'm on ICS and use the UGKG3 modem, works great for me in BC
Kg3 in bc too works great.
You say you try different roms, but have you wiped, and reformatted it. I'd do that with a fresh odin flash with repartition. What firmware are you running? Maybe you could do with a firmware upgrade.
