New thread to house the custom kernel built with linaro's gcc 4.7.1 toolchain
This *should* work with any AOSP ics rom.
Just because this kernel is built with the linaro toolchain it does not mean the rom needs to be compiled in a certain way.

Good question. This *should* work with any ics rom.
I tested this out last night (been running mamarley's kernel) and I ended up switching back for two reasons: first, this doesn't appear to have the 128MHz CPU speed - I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. And secondly, my phone apparently couldn't handle this kernel on 1113MHz - I got lots of FCs. And the rating on Nenamark was essentially the same as my baseline on other kernels.
Just some observations - and your mileage may vary! I really appreciate the fact that this is even being worked on, invisiblek.
EDIT: Totally meant AnTuTu, not Nenamark.

Great to hear feedback. Thats all im looking for here really.. It doesnt have 128mhz because its the same voltage as 245 hence no real benefit to having it. Plus some devices are unstable there. I never overclock but i can look at the voltages and maybe get 1113 stable
I can say it works on the new ICS TW rom, drains kinda fast although I think its rom related only.
I had only one reboot, got a freeze and then 10 seconds later a reboot. Its the only one I've had since reapplying new settings.
On freeze I was running SAv2 1113 Max/245 Min.
I have now lowered it to 998 and its running fine on that rom.
Other than that, its amazing.

Can you clear up the linaro tool chain for me, I'm confused as to if the ROM currently utilizes it... and if so is there a certain kernel you have to use along side it. Sorry if that's a stupid question...

I'm getting some pretty great battery life with this kernel and the 6/21 kang. 1 day and 9 hours after moderate use and I'm still at 30%

Its slower than the CM6 kernal. I ran a linpack of 27 and quadrant of 1277. This was both running "performance" mode, and turning set cpu to the max which was 1000. I Am going to give it a try, maybe the battery life will make up for the performance loss. If not, nandroid here I come.

I just hope it fixes my WiFi shutting off constantly.
Seems to be really solid, a bit slower than cm-6 but also took care my screen flicker and haven't found any negatives yet (1.0+ hr up time) . Looking forward to some overclock variations. Thanks for the work adrynalyne.

unstable for me on 9/10 nightly wifi on and no setcpu, 3 random lockups/reboots in past 2 hrs
32.61 linpack and 1341 quadrant. Its not much slower than cm-6. @adrynalyn, do you plan on bumping up the clock speeds? Mine is showing 1000 max btw. Thanks again

1k max for me as well. 998 didn't seem to be an option.
I'm getting similar performance as I get with kernels i compiled from koush's source where i only changed cpu speeds for overclocking and udervolting. Not as fast as koush's even when i bumped it up to 1.19Ghz. Which i couldn't figure out why since i used exact same source
Which of the current 2.3 ROMs is considered the fastest/most responsive? Or which ROM would be considered the fastest based on the mods & tweaks used by the developers? I'm not to versed in the technical side of things to discern which tweaks/mods/kernels/etc give way to the most stability, speed, and response and would like the community's opinions on the matter.
Probably CM7, I just started using it and there is never any lag. I haven't even OC'd it yet. This also comes with the price of having to live off a wall charger though.

If you mean fastest in clock speeds, then thats a balance betwen rawr clock and how much battery life you can get out of it. Keep in mind these phones clock easily 1.2ghz-1.3ghz no issues past that you need to increase the voltage. So you can in theory get 1.6ghz-1.8ghz but you will live next to a charger. If you mean fastest on how it feels Id have to say Continuum moved awesome few months back (haven't used it in a while) Atomic Fusion if the ext4 version comes out. But there you should just test them out.
On a side not if you want to OC your phone and not have to pay for the oc app, then Id suggest you stick to I9000 ports or AOSP's like CM7 or MIUI. Native roms like Cognition 5, Atomic Fusion and Nuclear Fusion need Tegrak for OC/UV.
Which of the I9000s seem to run the fastest/smoothest? I've been looking at Dlev and Darky but how does Apex/Symply GS II/Mosaic/Sensation compare?

I actually read in the Glitch kernel thread that when overclocking, higher voltages doesn't always mean more stability. I'm OC'd at 1.5ghz right now really stable and I was UV'd at -50mv but I just dropped it to -75mv to see if its stable there. I'll keep dropping it till I have issues.
Oh yeah, and CM7's battery life has got WAY better over time, so I'm not having to worry about charging all the time either.

From my experience to maintain a stable phone i over volt the "step" that's overclocked, and then undervolt the other "steps". Im by no means a expert nor is there a full proof way to do it. Each phone kinda reacts differently on the overclocking past 1.2-1.3ghz.
Which of the I9000 roms should theoretically run faster due to the tweaks/mods used by the developers without the need to overclock?
There if no need to overclock for daily use. Only if you are playing very demanding games. And only during those games.
As for fastest rom....have a search this question gets asked a lot with always the same answer and result:
There is no best rom, all phones are different as well as tastes, what's best for me on my device may not be on yours. Flash and try a few and make you own decision...
CM7 is fastest but Display and Sound quality is not as good as stock ROM .
Before school started for me and i couldnt access a charger when i wanted to, i used MIUI at a stable 1.6 GHz ALL of the time with odemand govenor and i got like 18 hours with moderate use, on Glitch V12! And you dont need to overvolt for higher speeds i have tested it and its better to undervolt higher clocks, i get better battery and performance!

Changes:
1. Played with some voltages making changes within Nvidia requirements
2. Increased overclock to 1.5 ghz (YAY!!! It's going to be pretty hot in there)
3. Increased audio bitrate for HD 1080p (since the older one had a lower bitrate)

Changes:
1. ROM changes made to optimize overclock settings. This ROM will have a maximum speed of 1.4 ghz without the use of overclocking apps. If you wish to undervolt, then you can use PimpCPU, SetCPU, CPUMaster, System Tuner and etc....
2. Modifited bitrate and FPS for 1080p video recording for better result (IMHO but your input on this will be greatly appreciated)
3. The rest is regular Cyanogen gingerbread with fingerprint mods by the dev team

It's the same kernel so it will not boot Didn't have time to play with the kernel because I was excited in compiling cyanogen mod in my new quad core which compiled in 23 minutes (last time I tried it on my laptop which was a core duo, it took me 7 hours).
It could be a couple of reasons.
1. GPU, AVP etc where overclocked
2. Memory timings where pretty aggresive

That are some of the uv options in mv, on the faux kernel I can get the 216mhz down to 300MV so I was just wondering what I can expect from UV kernel with elite.

Flashed this rom after using the CM9 port for a few days and missing my cam and LED flashlight. So far this is fast and no issues. I was a huge fan of the kernal and now I am a fan of the rom. Keep up the good work.

I was under the assumption that this was a combo and would work for either Cyanogen or a Gingerbread ROM but i can not get it to work with Wet Dream. However the ClemsynATT1.4elite works flawless.

If you have undervolted your Nexus 7 or any other tegra 3 based device please post the results here so I can throw them into a Excel sheet for development.
Using advanced mathematics and complex formulas I will make a undervolted kernel that's stable for everyone. For that, I need ideally 30 results or more. Less is ok but more or equal is better.

I also accept 1 frequency result. You don't have to undervolt everything. I favor the last known voltage that crashes as well if you can send this I am even more happy.

In order to use "advanced mathematics" and "complex formulas".. You might want to provide a format for "the results" you want people to provide.. Without a stream of formatted data to input your "complex formulas" and "advanced mathematics" is impossible..

Might as well be honest, set him on the right track early in his dev career rather than him rely on buzzwords and fud like some people do.
These are forums for android devices, not Apple devices, the reality distortion field doesn't work here, fancy marketing terms should be left at the door.

My Galaxy Nexus is proof of undervolting being unstable using software while being stable with manually programming the voltages. So I am going to give this a good shot anyway.
My Galaxy Nexus uses SmartReflex to undervolt.

You see the core or gpu was already crashing at 974mV, which was the reason why I stopped undervolting using the thread. But don't give up, I tried again using SmartReflex because I felt I should be able to get lower. And now I am at 911mV but I did not try to get lower yet.
I plan on undervolting by actually programming it. I don't know how you guys undervolt for the Nexus 7, since I am fairly new with this device.

For that I need some results. The more the better.
The only voltage settings that will work for 100% of people are stock voltages.
you will run into endless problems if you release an undervolted kernel because what works for 75% of people won't work for the rest.
If you adjust voltages to include more people the people that can handle the lower voltages aren't getting the full savings their device can handle. Which defeats the point of releasing an undervolted kernel to save battery.
Undervolting should be up to the individual, just release with stock voltages and make a guide showing people how to undervolt.

I've done a bit of pc overclocking over the years and we'd always seek out the best steppings to find cpu batches that would give a better clock speed for less volts. What would work on one person's cpu wouldn't work on another sometimes even within the same stepping. (My current machine is getting long in the tooth but it's running a 33% OC below stock volts and stable as a rock.)
When the N7 cpu's are tested the stock voltage is the point where 100% of them will run without issue. Certainly there are many, maybe even most N7's that will run undervolted but until you try it you just won't know. Undervolting needs to be done on a case by case basis.
I uv by 100mv on every step on Franco kernel and I've never had a sod or reboot. Maybe you could release different versions like light, medium and heavy to cater to different users that have sets than can uv more or less. To address all these people naysaying I say just go for it, don't let these people dishearten you from what you want to do. I'm sure there will always be users who are willing to try

That's exactly the same as what I have done. 100mV right across the board, and I have also never had a reboot or any other negative effect from doing it. Just a bit more battery life.
I too UV 100mv across the board. Never had an issue. And I OC up to 1.6ghz.

Same here, no issues with 100mv UV on stock speeds. What would happen if we went too low, would it fail to boot at all or is there some safety mechanism that would allow us to boot into boot loader?

When either OCing or UVing, you should ALWAYS test out the changes prior to saving them as a persistent boot state. This way, if you set something too high/low and it proves to be unstable, if you restart the device it will revert back to normal.
In the event that you OC/UV too much, yes, you would see signs of instability. In some cases it could show up as soon as you applied to change, in other cases it could take a while to notice. For example, some games or other high processing powered activities could FC/crash. Or your tablet might freeze or reboot. But again, as long as you didn't save your changes as a boot setting, it will be fine once it reboots.
In the event that you did save it, and the settings were unstable for your device, you could boot up into recovery and then manually erase them from taking effect. Recovery doesn't use those settings, as it's technically a different OS. But that can be complicated a process for some. So test test test save. Or don't save and just apply them manually.

Yes, most (all?) devices do have safeguards to protect itself against permanent hardware damage from OC/UVing. If it gets too hot, they will often shut down to protect themselves.
And just because one device can handle being OC'd or UV'd to a certain level doesn't mean they all can. Very minor differences in each component can impact one devices ability from another. The manufacturers only test to see if they can handle the published speeds/etc., but in many cases they can go higher if set to. In others, not so much.
Thanks for that phonic. Given the range of ROMs and kernel's available and the improvements already built in, under volting may not help a lot but every bit helps. Eg this screen on time is pretty good.Close to six hours screen on time with iirc 35% battery remaining.
Paranoid android with motley kernel. I don't over clock the nexus 7 as its fast enough. In fact I under clocked it to 1000 MHz max before and it was still fast but the screenshots are at stock volts and speeds.
it's actually plain simple. If everyone posts results. I can make a kernel with voltages that work for 75% of all people or maybe for 95% of all Nexus 7 owners.
It's called mathematics. But to do that I need as much results as possible.

hello i am using your kernel now for some month and it was really nice. but since some months there is no progress here. are you working on it anymore? an update would be nice after over 3 months now. I would have really some "good" additions und suggestions for the kernel. Furthermore, philz touch has a new version out. would be really nice if you could update it to the latest version. the cwm integrated to the cm11 stock kernel now is newer as the base of your last released forest kernel. Also some here have deep sleep problems. Also it would be nice if you could look for sabermod/Linaro und archi optimizations or -03 optimization of the kernel in general. thanks for your great kernel!

Too busy at work so not working on it for now. Maybe when there is CM stable or CM Lilopop....
For those who has deep sleep prob, should try disabling the sync. Use synker app to manually turn sync on/off.

Guys my battery drains very fast and i change it but the problem still happening
And after install this kernal v5 it better than the stock kernal but it use more than 25% of battery wthin less than on hour if i use wifi and just open whatsapp and browser .
If anyone had a solve for this problem ?

Have u turned off autosync? It consumes much battery.

yes i turned it off and from setting/privacy/ i disabled Google play services and almost the app. from- wake up & Location & keep awake.
and i used the lowest Brightness

The one that has TRIM has TRIM. The one that doesn't have TRIM doesn't have TRIM. You can choose which one to flash by searching and reading what TRIM is, understanding the risks, and then deciding whether you're willing to take on the risk or not. Simple as that.
Am using v3 kernal for nightowl ..phones heating..but v1 is stable for me no heating and very snappy .thankyou for the kernal

Use no frills, underclock to 1.2 GHz.. Then use ondemand Governor... Problem solved..
Dear Forest, am I correct that the forest kernel beta4 in comparison to r9 is missing lcd oc?
Is there now any advantages left over r9 since cpu oc got removed?

Whats ur problem? This q+a or not?
I used v3ts until now on rr528. Since theres no b4 i switched to nightowl b4. And now Raw4 ist out that offers trim, gpu driver upd, oled oc and fpbug. I used to use forest because of cpu oc. Now that it is gone i wonder if there still is any supremacy of ur kernel that i dont see.
So what is ur problem with this question?
Why don't you just use whatever kernel you like and stop trolling?

English is not my first language so i might not see the intentions of ur answers. I dont mean to troll. I want to continue using forests kernel and was wondering what the current state in comparison to raw it is in as these are the only custom kernels available. Since this is somehow an offence to someone dont mind anserwing this anymore. Its not an issue.

A Little Request and Questions
Greetings Forest! I am a new user of XDA, so forgive me if I made mistakes in presentation or in technical accuracy.
I am currently using your Kernel with CM11, and as far as stability goes, everything is working fine, although I find myself facing instabilities using the PegasusQ governor. Looking at the governer closely through ROM toolbox lead me to realise that there a hotplug settings existent for 4 core devices, while the Galaxy Note only has 2. Is this an issue? As far as it goes, I find myself waking up to a device showing the bootanimation continuously, but very slowly and choppy, forcing me to restart the phone. Luckily I wake up on time for work via instinct. Apart from that, the phone crashes except when using ondemand. Is there any explanation for these crashes?
Now for the requests. Since ondemand is not really the best, as I have seen more responsive and effective governors like SmartAssV2, which is personally my favourite. I've also read up on Interactive being a more responsive version of ondemand, I was wondering if you could include more governors for the kernel. Unless of course, governors are limited to CPU types which I hope not, then probably this post would've been written for nothing.

Thank u for investigating the bug and helpful report:good:. I am also testing with stock cm kernel using pegasusq and also got a freeze. Now i can recalled similar problem faced by Slimsaber. On the other hand, my kernel run well on omni and omni based. So there seems to be some issues with some governors but only happen in CM and CM based rom. I will try to fix or remove/add some new governors when I can.
For now should use Ondemand!

Well, today I woke up to a frozen boot animation screen, even on ondemand. Although ondemand lasted longer before crashing.
There might be much more issues with CM.
I will test out OmniRom later this afternoon.

Hm. That present some new challenge. I am back to cm now to test it more. will also update the kernel soon to apply some changes in governors and other changes to improve stability.
