I'm on the second leak and tried both regular rooted stock and safe strapped to cm9 but wireless tether for root users fails setting up adhoc on both. Anything I'm missing here or is this a known issue?

You should pay the additional $30 if you want to WiFi Tether. (or switch to Sprint). Don't be cheats. Rooting and installing custom ROMs isn't illegal, it just voids your ability to call in for phone support...WiFi Tethering without a plan is against the TOS. Nobody should be encouraging others, or instructing them on how to violate the TOS. XDA mods really need crack down on threads like this. If you pay for the feature it will work without you having to do any workarounds.
I use it in cases when there is no wifi and we need a real computer, people already pay upwards fo 100 dollars for one line. You pay for the data you should use it as you want. Plus the original android had wifi tether built in for free.

You got that right! I pay upwards of $350.00 a month for 3 lines with unlimited data. What part of "UNLIMITED DATA" does verizon not get? I will continue to hack my phone until it can no longer be done !
Thank you I pay out but for my phone I should be able to do what I want with it besides it's not like they aren't making a killing off me and now they want to make more I work very hard for the little bit of money I get after all my bills are paid I have 60 dollars a week to live off of and that is not including food and I get no food stamps or anything so believe me when I say

Paying for tethering is simply not possible on a ROM that doesn't have moto/vzw apps built in, either. Nobody would possibly pay for something that they can't use due to it not existing

Haha! You tell em.
I don't know about you but I'm tired of paying nearly 200 buck for 2 smart phones that I can't do anything I want with. If I have the capabilities and the know how, then I see no harm. I think you should save your opinion or start your own thread called the "Android Police." I'm personally here to give help where help is needed if I can.
I also personally see no problems using my phone as a wireless tether because the 4GB data plan I have that I pay 30 bucks for each line runs out so quick each month I feel I either have to be rich or be a drug dealer to be able to afford the plan I need to get the most out of my phone.
PS. I think this post is a great candidate for a dislike or thumbs down button.

I was personally with sprint for 10 years before switching to Verizon. I was tired of paying more than 2 grand a year with sprint and couldn't even get good data signal at home or work. Then they made me pay to get out even though I didn't get good service to begin with. Verizon's 3g and 4g run circles around sprint.

WiFi tethering is part of AOSP Android, bud. The carriers (at least in the US) remove this feature and include their own hotspot for a fee. Installing the SQL hack is technically against the TOS, since in that case you are using their service, they just don't know - but when you use an app that does *not* use their service, but rather Android's built-in capabilities, then you are doing nothing wrong.

Ok, there are news making round, where iphone users got message saying that they have to sign up for tethering plans to use tethering. I don't know if it also applies to Android phones or not?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
My assumption is that they will apply the tethering charge if they can detect a tethered usage. I was hoping someone would create a thread on this so we could compare notes.
So, did any Captivate users with a self-enabled tethering set-up get the AT&T message? Any theories on what you did to make yourself suspicious?
Just for the record I've never tethered yet but i'd like to have the ability to do it in a pinch, with my plain jane $15 a month capped data plan, and I'd be willing to pay for any data overages when I do. But I'll be damned if I'll pay $45 a month just in case I need it some day.
I tether my Captivate with my laptop occasionally and use my phone's wireless AP with my nook on an unlimited data plan. No notice from AT&T, and no extra charges. It does seem that there could be some throttling going on after using quite a bit of data, it could just be coincidence though. When I purchased my Cappy the salesman did say there was no extra charge for tethering, unlike the iPhone's $30 tethering plan, things change though.

That is because until this latest version of IOS that was just released iPhone users could not tether without jailbreaking their phones. They can now legally tether with IOS 4.3.3 I believe. This doesn't have any bearing on the Captivate to the best of my knowledge but that is just my opinion.
No it still has a meaning for us. They are just trying to get more money from people for using services that they can charge you for. So if they can detect it they will try to get money from you

You can use USB or Wifi... I actually have only used wifi

That's why I was posting, to ask.
Has anyone gotten wireless tether to work on rooted Bionic yet? I can get connected, but it seems as though verizon's hotspot tries to start with it and thus blocking an IP from being given out and any internet tethering to my devices.
I was an avid user of wireless tether but please do not use it while still running stock rom. Verizon and motorola have security features built into the stock software to help them track people using what they consider illeagal tether apps. Please refrain from using such apps until there is a custom ROM released so as to avoid bringing us to the forefront of verizons attention. In the meantime use pdanet USB tether app located in market. It is important that we as a community stop using our knowledge to continue pushing carriers and handset manufacturers from locking us out completely. If we continue our current trend of outrite defiance in use of these wireless tether apps (wheather you think it should be ok or not is irrelevent until a court rules on it) we are only hurting ourselves in the long run. Please for now use pdanet or similar USB tether app as they are not frowned upon by carriers. If you need to know why here it is, USB apps allow only one device to be connected which limits bandwidth used at one time, wireless tethers allow you to run everything in your house simultatiously greatly increasing individual strain on the network and makeing the user experience for all worse in the long run as the network can only handle so much.
Well, there it all is, an informed public is a better public... Happy modding to all.

Just curious, why would they frown upon wireless tether yet pdanet is "acceptable"? Either way you're bypassing the tethering charge. I can see how wifi tethering would lend itself to a greater amount of abuse as you could have multiple devices using it concurrently - but you can do that with pdanet as well with a little more effort. So I'm wondering how you reached this conclusion? Thanks.
Im confused as to how doing wifi connection is more of a burden than usb. Either connection you're bandwidth is still limited to your 3G or 4G service. On 3G my download speeds are around 3mbs. This is usb or wifi. Now that bing said. If i connect my computer by itself, I keep all this speed to myself. Connecting my wifes computer, xbox, etc. This doesn't bump ky speed to 3mbs per device. Now the 3 devices are sharing the 3mbs im able to connect at. So pleased enlighten me how usb is more acceptable than wifi? All you spam nothing but fear with no actual proof. This has been goingnon since the.DROID OG, and I still have read no proof, just scarce ramblings of people who think they know what they're talking about. P3Droid has stated that the tethering is coming to an end, and that they're getting smart enough to detect it, but still nothings happened yet. Usb or wifi you're "stealing" internet from Verizon, get over yourself and do it or don't.
This will probably only come when we get custom roms.

I am hearing mixed messages. Does ANYONE have any experience with using it? I am going to use the D3 root method to access the app.
Thanks for any input anyone can give me!

Since tethering with a USB cord works, what's keeping you from doing that?
I've tried all the apps out there to no avail. According to what I've read, you'll havento have 2 separate programs on your computer and get into the actual coding on the antenna side of the phone to over ride this. Easy fix is keep a DROID that the tether works on, and activate it on myverizon.com, and deactivate it when you're done. It takes less than 2 minutes to do this. A headache, yes, but a simple fix till someone comes up with a patch or better way.

*288 works on older phones to program them to the 3G network for data and voice. I don't know how all the 4G phones are, but the bionic's programmed and roaming capabilities are done through a 4G sim card in the phone. The bionic wont even allow a *288 phone call to go through

you'll have to activate both from myverizon.com. First thing you'll have to do is go to myverizon.com and activate you Droid OG with the ESN number, then dial *228 to get service. then you can use your phone as you were before. when you're done, go back to myverizon.com and reactivate your Droid Bionic, and turn it on with your sim card and it activates its self. I myself, have dialed *288 several times on my Bionic, and it has done no ill things to my sim card. It's confirmed to work, but it's also very possible VZ can just track it easily since you're using their service and they'll stick you on a tiered plan paying tons more than the grandfathered unlimited plan. With custom ROMs there is software that prevents them from seeing if you are browsing the web on your handset or using it to power your laptop. Be careful.
Hi, Im interested in rooting my G note.
I rooted my HTC HD2 a long time ago and it was just alot better (custom roms). HOWEVER:
Im interested in this android tether application: Obviously you can tether you 3g you pay for monthly with the phones default settings. BUT
using root access, does this mean you can cancel your contract!, get a pay as you go contract, use the android tether to effectively steal the 3g data and then stream it to the same phone over wifi and browse for instance on Opera mini, mobile firefox, receive email over it?
or, is it the case that you can only tether to other devices such as ipod touch,,another wifi capable phone?
I can't really see the use in this otherwiseunless you carry around two phones all the time.
Can someone clear this up please because all the videos Ive watched they only prove it works on another device.
thanks very much, and I hope this works
by the way , I am based in the UK, have the standard european version and Im on a 3g network called 3. If this only works withother uk providers Id be happy to switch to orange/t-mobile , O2 etc

Forgive me as i dont really understand what you're looking for. Is there a link to the tethering app you're speaking of? Tethering apps are usually so you can use your phones 3g for your laptop/pc. If youre on 3, then youre unlimited bundle comes in handy. A friend of mine tethers his sgs2 t9 his laptop using unlimited 3g as his broadband connection and has done for some time now without being restricted.
I dont understand when you say "steal the 3g from a pay as you go phone" to your note? That seems pointless. Surely yiu could just stick the pay as you go sim into your note?
Also, there are a lot of tethering apps that dont require root access.

I thought one of the advantages of rooting your phone is to be able to not pay the monthly contract and use the tethering wifi from whichever network your on.

yeh I know this....so...
oh, so it is only when you have a data plan already, you get tethering for free. when rooted. Nothing special then. ''. ?
so you can't have no data plan and effectively steal free data? ? '',
oh wait: having said that i was thethering a few months ago and my bill was huge: so I dont get it for free..
so reverting my original question:: does this work on the 3 network in the uk? thx
also:
couldn't i just root like an old samsung galaxy, keep it in my left pocket, travel the world , lol and keep a galaxy note in the other pocket using the wifi from the old samsung?
Im a little confused too, couldn't you do this with no data plan, i.e pay as you go and when you connect to 'data 3g' they charge you as you go, but effectively just tether it to another phone for free? so basically you would just pay for calls and not internet?
Ok, what the guy is on about is thqt operators in us charge an extra bolt on for the priveledge of enabling tethering. O2 used to do it when tethering was first enabled on the iphone 3gs, it was 10 quid a month or something rediculous.
Im pretty sure that now its free to enable tethering in the uk. All it means is that you can pair your phone using existing data plan to your laptop or pc, and effectively use it as a mobile 3g modem.
So yes, tethering will work on any network or rom, you're just limited by your existing data plan as to how worthwhile it is. If you get a 3 all you can eat data plan, then its unlimited, but of course speeds are pretty crappy.
Im sure there is a way to hack an operators 3g networks and get data for free but would imagine thats a bit beyond xda's strict code of ethics
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I see, what I meant when I got charged alot was that I went over the 5GB limit.
If I was to tether for free, using the root access, would I basically 'eat up that data' whilst tethering to another device for free?
As you know, in the uk, the tethering access most commonly comes under the same data plan and isn't free in that regard.
Yes, tethering just uses your existing data plan. Try getting one of 3's all you can eats if possible, im sure theyd be willing to if you call them up.

To me it looks more like you have no idea about what rooting and tethering really is/does.... Since what you are asking is completely ridiculous...
You want to use your 3G data to send it over wifi, back to the same phone......
You can just cut out the tether part and use your 3G directly........
it's like getting into the car by entering into the trunk to get out by the back door to finally open the drivers door and sit in the drivers seat, instead of just open the drivers door right away like normal minded ppl would do.....
Guess we all start somewhere, i was confused as hell when i started out with smartphones.

just come back to this thread after a few hours: no its not because you would be getting it for free.
It is more like buying a drivers door and not actually owning a boot door or side door
surely?!
Don't you understand?? In the uk you can have a pay as you go contract and then pay extra for 3g when you use it, so instinct would suggest you could effetcivel climb into your car through the boot and into the drivers seat!!! to use the pay as you go 3g (for free) through tethering(eg the metaphorical boot ) and use the wifi receiver of the phone to use it!!! (eg the metaphorical drivers seat )
...
.. .
But anyway I understood from before that the phone can't receive that own signal. Although now Im questioning either the other persons understanding or your ignorance So what Im now saying is 'yes its useful'. But does it work in the uk where the tethering is just the same usage of the data plan eg 5GB????
Im sure I could ask 3 for unlimted but tbh the people at their contact centre are umbelievably annoying. Id prefer to use this way of tethering as it'd give me an excuse to put effort into rooting my device anyway
Strange logic indeed... Pretty sure the car would have blown up and you'd be in hospital!

strange humour. Has no one got a striaight answer to this.
Or can i assume everyone on this forum is mobile obsessed, and works for mobile phone network companies
Answer answered a few times.
I dont think you understand the principals of tethering or a normal data connection.

So, if i was to tether having rooted the phone, it would still cost me is that what your saying?
because I don't think that was said at all ?
Tether uses data from the phone. If you have no data plan, you cant tether full stop.
If you know of a way to hack 3's 3g network, please let me know, i'll transfer now.

i just found this, but, since you can have payg internet i see no reason why you couldn't tether .. Correct me if im wrong but it just seemed a naturally progressive assumption.

sorry i can't just take your word for it ,

ok I found this though http://technoratia.com/2011/12/30/three-uks-position-on-tethering-devices-to-your-phone/ three don't allow tethering on payg,,, (as its their policy)
suppose someone must do in the uk??? then it would work right? presuming the tethering is alos in the payg form and not monthly eg bolt on to a payg plan.
giffgaff allow tethering from payg but you wil lbe paying a hell of alot of money to tether on a non contract tarriff
you cannot tether if you do not have the creit on payg or a contract that gives you data each month
what exactly are you trying to achive ? internet on your laptop for free from a mobile connection and dropping a home broadband connection?
You cannot resend a tethered signal from a phone back to itself as the tethering itself uses the phone's WIFI module, and as such cannot connect to the WIFI hotspot since the phone has no additional WIFI modules. So what you're asking for is literally impossible under normal circumstances.
Also, am I right in understanding that what you're asking for is bordering on fraud/theft of services?

He is trying to enter a Tesco, and eat their M&M's without opening the bag....
And consequently not opening his wallet either
And he still doesn't understand rooting, dataplans or tethering, which isn't a bad thing, but he could just take our word for it, or read up on it.

T-Mobile starts data throttling. I knew this carrier was to good to be true. This sounds like a breach of contract to me. Im in a contract and pay for unlimited data without throttling. I asked the sales rep before I left AT&T, and was assured and even have it in writing. Contract is no longer binding if they breech and continue to breech contract.
This is ridiculous.

Maybe they not making enough money as folks thought they was and being abused on the data is hurting them real bad maybe? T mobile needs a buyer badly they need a merger or something to help them with the cash to be able to do everything they want to do they came along way and did good but they can't keep going unless they get help.
Before you listen to he say she say read for yourself. Tmobile throttling will only affect P2P users and people using third party tethering to go beyond the tethering limit. The CEO of Tmobile already cleared up if you use 1TB for data browsing, netflix, hulu, and etc your safe.
1 TB of data? And how are they to tell or decide who is using a third party apk to tether beyond limit? Its a violation of privacy to go into you phone and see from where or how you use your data.

When you signed up for tmobile youe were guaranteed unlimited data on your phone only not unlimited tethering to other devices or downloading illegal torrents.
I don't download any torrents of any kind..... Don't know where you got that. And I only have 3 gigs of tether after that its shut off. So...... Where were you headed with that.....

They don't have to decide...... They know the limitations of hardware and how much it can down load. Also it's not what you have on your phone, it's how much data your using from their network. Which your using their network, so there is no violation of privacy.

So why are you complaining about throttling when it wont affect you
Cuz I still pull 50+ gigs a month. And its the principle of it. Advertise one thing then get a bunch of people to switch to T-Mobile then change the rules in the middle of the game.
And this didn't really start as a complaint. I started the thread to inform people. Share information to make others aware.
We gotcha........
T-mobile is just doing the something that Metro PCS did years ago. And just saying, hey for those who are abusing the network we will step in and throttle you down if you keep it up.
It won't effect people who aren't abusing the network. Only the people who are.
T-Mobile's thing is to give those people fare warning before they do throttle them down.
So if your using under 50GB a month you probably have nothing to worry about. But if you're a person who is using 300GB then you might be throttled down. Just for example.
Sent from my LG-D959 using XDA Free mobile app
T-Mobile CEO stated you can use 1 TB of data and you still wont be throttled. T-mobile is only throttling users who use 3rd party apps to bypass the monthly tethering limit I'm on unlimited everything so my tethering limit is 5gb . T-Mobile will also throttle u if your using there serivce for p2p/torrents most content is copyrighted and illegal to download anyway plus its heavy on uploading on tmobile network. If you dont do the two things i posted your safe from throttled.

really 3 gbs only?
this coming from the same guy who was raving about how to downloaded something to let him tether to his hearts content?

3gb is all I get for free. Using the tether hack I get a lot more. But it's kinda like a car. When I bought it it only gets 24 mpg but after the modifications done it gets 27 mpg. Does that give the dealership right to charge me more or the gas station the right to charge me more. And no I'm smart enough to know you can read my history of post just glad you're smart enough to know how to do that. Now are you smart enough to know how to pull your finger out of your ass and move on past this. Since I've explained that this post was only to inform people of tmobiles future plans. Well you ought to be cuz that's in my post history too.
Boom he just got served lmao
They slowed me down at 100gb, no tethering at all
