[Q] Tablet Mode and Phone Mode? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for this perhaps a foolish question but here goes:
Will somebody please explain to me what is tablet mode and phone mode? Why do we have to put the note on tablet mode or phone mode? why not together?
THANKS!

it's not foolish, but you might have probably googled the answer yourself, shortly speaking ICS interface is bit different on larger screens (tablets) than on smaller screens (phones), hence two modes - google for details. Now if you turn on the tablet mode on small screen, the text and icons will become really small. Note with it's 5.3" screen sits somewhere in between, so on some ROMs you might switch it to tablet mode, and be still able to see the text and icons, but there is no "must" here, it's your choice. the two ROMs I'm aware of that support tablet mode are CM9 and Paranoid, not sure about stock ones. the way you can change mode is by changing screen DPI from default 320 to afair 213, either by editing build.prop file or using one of the apps available in the market (search phrase: screen density).

Thanks. I did not even know this pertains to ICS. I am still on GB until brick problem is resolved.

Should you be tempted to try, I'd recommend CM9, which should be safe to install, provided you follow instructions

As said before I'm not sure about tablet mode on stock ROMs, but to me it seems that - in true explorer's spirit - you've checked it, and it just did not work, which seems possible, considering that Samsung stock ROMs are heavily modified.
I might be wrong, and maybe it's possible to have working tablet mode under stock ICS, but so far have not encountered any proof (did not search for it though)
If you are really desperate for this mode, try either CM9 (have it, use it, and I'm not going back to stock anytime soon) or Paranoid, although my personal opinion - after trying for myself - is that tablet mode does not provide any special excitement, apart from almost invisible icons (as for the text, luckily, CM9 has an option of increasing system font size, so I was able to read the icon labels at least)

there must be few minor issues pending, otherwise it would already be declared stable, but I'm running it for few weeks, and see no annoyances so far (except for USB mode speed, but it might be a problem on my side) additionally devs are providing nightly updates, so each day it gets little bit better under the hood

I still did not get the concept of phone and tablet mode. I am on stock GB, while browsing thru XDA app I get a sms from my phone number. Isn't the browsing mode tablet mode and the sms phone mode? Why call the change in display density "tablet" mode? Why not call everything pertaining to telephony as phone mode and all the others are tablet mode?

it's not related to device function, it's related to screen size - tablet have bigger screen, so it is possible to display more things on the screen at the same time, e.g. in Settings you will see main menu on the left, phones with smaller screen will display only one settings item contents

[Q] [BOUNTY] Screen rotation on ICS

This problem has annoyed me for way to long, so i'll pay $50 USD to anyone who can help me.
No matter what i do, i cannot get screen/auto rotation to work properly on any ICS rom. It will stay portrait mode no matter what. Auto-rotation works fine on any Froyo/Gingerbread rom i use. Flashed every ICS rom available. I've tried the following:
1. Turning on auto-rotation in Settings>Display
2. Toggling auto-rotate in Settings>Display while the phone is turned landscape
3. Toggling notification widget orientation icon
4. Reflashing/Wiping everything/flashing and wiping (don't get me started)
The only app that actually rotates for me is Camera.
Accelerometer Values app from market tells me everything is fine.
wow dude i don't really know what to say. I did try team icssgs's RC3.1 a while back and everything worked great. Actually, i can even say i was rather impressed on how ICS handled screen rotation. Had that turning iphone-like effect and worked every single time perfectly, no matter what i was running, as long as it was enabled on settings.
Any chance you might have some app interfering with screen rotation? like some toggle widget or something?
Wish you good luck mate

nope happens on any newly flashed fresh ICS rom
Lol, I'm very doubtful that my solution will work, but if you're desperate enough you can try and who knows, I might win 50 bucks
First answer me this: On your last Gingerbread Rom, you had the ability to turn off all animations in the Settings -> Display menu.
Did you turn off all animations?? If yes, read my solution. If no, stop reading here
So, you answered yes. Here's my proposal:
1. Flash a Gingerbread ROM again. Turn ON all animations.
2. Flash your desired ICS ROM

on gingerbread, i would always turn on all animations
but that wouldnt do anything since flashing a new rom wipes everything
What launcher are u using?
Howdy!
On ICSSGS 4.2 and Semaphore 9.0 the turning works fine for me. That is in apps that support it. The launcher for instance doesnt - the clock does.
You could try installing the ES Task Manager and check whether the turning is on there. Also you could check appropriate apps for your Kernel/Rom -- sometimes you can turn stuff on and off there, as well.

I'm on THS Experimental Build, but Build 16 should be the same.
1. You didn't mention this, but Settings > Launcher > General > Auto-Rotate Screen
This is using Trebuchet Launcher, but it should be similar on any other ICS Launcher, under the Settings "Interface" list.

Likely its because of the changes in windoworientationlistener.Java its been changed to absolute values so now you have rotation_angles instead of rotation_mode where sensor libs would return 2 3 4 5 depending on degrees 0 90 180 270 now it looks for actual degrees rotationinstead of numbered modes
try ics slim. Settings -ASS - General UI - set rotation delay. and ofcourse set on the rotation.

I wish I had tried some games... all I can say for certain is that it works in the camera app and sensor test apps like GPS Status. So it seems like it comes down to the system UI not interpreting the sensor readings correctly.

I suggest you try it out with some games too.. coz if it's a rom issue, it can't be with every rom..
Even the games don't directly access the accelerometer.. Goes through the kernel which controls the hardware.. If it works in games, should work in the roms which have accelerometer working fine..
This annoyed me for a while... It worked fine on THS ROM with Trebuchet launcher. I switched to AOKP, and couldn't get it to work, tried a few others that all failed. After a couple of months, I'm back to CM9 on nightlies (with Semaphore 1.2.0) and rotation works perfectly, couldn't be happier.
Maybe try CM9?

Confirmed the accelerometer DOES work in games.
So it works in the camera and 3rd party apps like sensor tests and games. Does not work in any launcher, the stock browser, gallery, or other system apps.
Also tried the the latest Team Nyx release - not working there either. I've tried the latest CM9, ICS333, AOKP... it doesn't work in any of them.

Density, usb and animation questions

Hi, can i ask,
1. Can i just change the lcd density from build.prop if im using rooted stock 4.03 lpf? If i change to 240, any problem will occur?
2. How can i set stay awake when usb plugged in this rom?
3. Do we have crt animation? Is it samsung ruin it and have to wait them fix it?
Thx everyone
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Premium HD app
Ofcourse you can ask
1. Use ROM Toolbox Lite (Free) Application from market. Now go to Performance Tab & You can tweak there the lcd density. If you change density, usually nothing as such happens. Except that some widgets which are built on particular density crash. I had weather widget which used to work only in 320 density. So now it doesn't work in 280 (which is my current). I killed the widget now
What is the worst I have faced by changing the dpi? FCs, Widget Crashes & Once a bootloop. All three can be resolved by one thing: Flash back the ROM xD
2. Another app called as smart app protector (free) is in market. I guess they have a tab called 'Screen' through which you can set LCD to be awake when a particular app is running. I hope this should resolve. Not sure on this though.
3. It depends on which ROM you are in. Yes, we do have CRT animations. I am on Asylum ICS. I do have it.
If you want to go ahead and manually enable it: http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/enable-crt-animation
this should help you get some idea on how to.
Well, there ain't any shortcut to the manual trigger bouy!

Simple density tweak

This is such a simple tweak but I figured I'd share it any how...
It always amazes me how there's this badass high res screen but it ships with everything scaled up which just doesn't take any advantage of the number of pixels available.
I messed around with a few values of the "ro.sf.lcd_density" property in /system/build.prop and settled for 320 (default is 480). It does make a little on the small side but you can offset this with the regular Settings -> Display -> Font size option.
The result, is for me at least, a great improvement. I can see most of my apps in the drawer without scrolling, can see and actually read a whole website without zooming in plus the system and nav bars top and bottom now take up a much more reasonable amount of space.
Install your favorite root enabled File Explorer and mount system RW and go edit. I like http://goo.gl/NvtA8 as it runs as su & mounts system for you.
After getting stuck in a bootloop by using one of those dpi changer apps I've plucked up the courage to try again. This time I edited the build.prop myself and it worked.
It looks crazy I think I could get used to this though

I suggest you to try with the value 400: I've been using it since I got the phone and is great! A lot of space but still usable everyday. But sadly this is not a stock value ( 480 320 240 and 160 are stock afaik) and this will break play store compatibility: to fix it you have to flash a multi dpi play store mod.
And yes, the phone app does not scale properly but it's not really an issue..

Tried with 320 , but I got a boot loop. Locked Z , with root and CWM .
I think I will have to reflash it from the PC companion to recover it.
Very strange. What does adb logcat say during your bootloop? Sure you didn't b0rk the file some how?
I did not look at the adb, but I'm thinking the same thing, I thing somehow the file just got corrupted ...
also after I mount R/w , twice the screen got black, reboot, root explorer, R/w and everything ok.
Once I flash with PC companion , and root it again I will try again :fingers-crossed:
Anyhow I tried also a couple of days ago with a dpi changer and the result was the same .

Well... THANK YOU! It's almost like being on Paranoid!! You can set per app dpi, font dimension (scale) and layout (screen dp) so I can get tablet layout in the apps I'm interested while keeping the global interface (navbar and notification bar) at the desired dpi.

Once again, i would really appreciate if one of you gus who reported everything to work ok could share all the relavant details i/o for me to reproduce.

I got these set to 480 and the dialer looks pretty good for me:
Contacts
Contacts Import
Contacts storage
Phone
Phone Contact
Phone/Messaging Storage

I'm not sure how many of these actually relate to what you're seeing on screen, someone else will hopefully clear that up, but at the moment this is what is working for me.

DPI changes

So I am hoping I am not the only one that thanks the stock navigation bar is way too big. On my Oneplus One I had it set pretty small, but it made the phone look better, just didn't make everything look so big.
My question is has anyone changed the DPI on the G4, and if so, what did you use to do that?
I am rooted and have flashed xTreme v1.0.
Thanks.

You just need an app like build.prop editor, ES File Explorer,or Root Explorer to find and edit text within the build.prop file. It is in the "system" folder. Once you've accessed the build.prop look for ro.sf.lcd_density and change the value from 640 to whatever you like and restart the phone. I've heard that if you go below 540 the camera app and some other apps will not work properly. I set mine to 560. Also, if you have a quickcircle case, that quickcircle app will no longer be aligned correctly as it's set for 640 dpi. Once we get xposed running or if you have a rom that allow for per-app dpi settings, you would be able to easily fix this issue.
Hopefully this helps.

You just need an app like build.prop editor, ES File Explorer,or Root Explorer to find and edit text within the build.prop file. It is in the "system" folder. Did you have any bootloop issues?

I didn't. Never had any boot loop issues throughout the whole rooting process. I have an ATT H810 model however. Just lurking on the T-Mobile page to see what development comes out now that you all have unlocked bootloader.

Okay. THanks. Yeah I tried editing the build.prop and when it rebooted, it was optimizing 32 apps and when it was finishing up, it would reboot. So I am on my backup. Ill see if there are any other options or fixes to this. I just hate how big everything looks at the default.
I used an app someone in one of the G4 threads mentioned called DPI Density changer. I lowered it to 550 seems pretty good to me.
If you're unhappy with the NavBar, you can give Swipe Navigation [Root] a try. It's GREAT on the G4, the Nexus 6 and other onScreen Nav based devices. I have it set with the NavBar completely hidden and it has an outstanding swipe gesture setup to replace the NavBar buttons. It's made every app take full advantage of the display without any loss due to the NavBar sucking up some space.
Build Prop Editor on the play store works flawlessly. The DPI option is conveniently located in the side menu too. Running 540 with no issues, though the circle case will still be misaligned.

Dpi density changer worked for me. Nav bar is still a little big for me at 540 but its manageable. Thanks for all the help!

note 9 tablet UI

hi guys... somebody here knows correct values (if possible) of DPI so that on our NOTE 9, apps will simulate the tablet interface?

i just set my dpi to 600 and chrome and a few others changed to tablet mode. Not all apps will "change" though.

thanx for the reply sir.. you did not have any issues with app crashing at 600?
tried 600.... but gboard and even samsung keyboard is not usable anymore.hahaha
I have always used 576...( I use a larger font size)
The only app that caused trouble is Samsung keyboard but I use SwiftKey anyways... Swift key beta can be resized specifically to your needs...
With 576 I have never seem tablet mode
Just tested.... Default samsung won't turn to tablet mode with any dpi change...

So, usually I use 500 DPI min width because that is the lowest DPI I can set that fools Beautiful Widgets into thinking I have a tablet. That way I can use the larger tablet widget. After comparing things with a screenshot today, im using 549dp now as the keyboard fits better.
But I set my phone back to 600 again and I was able to use chrome beta, chrome, Google phone, settings, Gboard.
Please note I only have Samsung files and Samsung note left installed when it comes to Samsung's apps, the rest have been uninstalled and replaced with googles version. I got tired of using 2 app stores to keep apps updated, and Samsung apps scaled terribly.
At the 3nd I also attached a picture of what 500 DPI looks like 9n google chrome. Seems every app has its own value that transitions design from phone to tablet. I prefer the phone layout of Chrome with DUET enabled so that the menu bar is at the bottom.
Fun Fact, you can force dark more on chrome using chrome://flags on Android.
