hi guys. i'm on Cm7 kang! and i wonder that to save battery, should i set the phone to 2g only or just disable the data access over mobile network? i've made shortcuts on the notification power widget to do the both things. but when i change from 2g only to 2g&3g it takes me some minutes to connect so i can't access the network immediately, that's so inconvenient. so if i just disable the data access, will the phone continuosly search for UMTS network and drain my battery? does disabling data help me save the battery as much as i need? looking forward to u guys. thanks.

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if when I connect to the internet using a WIFI connection (whether its one I own or a public one)...does that count as "data usage" on my bill?
The reason I ask is because I'm on tmobile and a most of you probably already know, they lowered the cap to 5gbs of data a month and after you go past that limit you'll still have data connection but it'll be super slow (most likely EDGE speeds) until your new billing cycle begins. I'm currently at 4.8gbs already (watching youtube videos, using the internet, xda, etc) so I want to know if I can use an open WIFI connection without worrying about going past 5gbs.
Thanks.
no it wont count as data usage.

make sure you go to Wifi advance settings and select "Wifi sleep policy" accordingly (I suggest to put it on "Never")
If you don't do so, Android will turn off Wifi and switch to mobile data when your screen is off or not plugged in.

Thank you, I'll make sure I do that then.
note that the wifi sleep policy will only work if you are running FRG83 (2.2.1) unless you are VERY lucky to not experience the bug on 2.2
edit: nvm just saw you're running CM 6.1 ^^
mobile data
also if you really want to not use any of your mobile data you can go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile network settings and turn off data, then you will only use data over wifi and won't use any more data

Thank you so much, i wasn't aware of an app like this. But it'll be so useful to me.
I rarely use my network data connection. I use wifi at home and at work. Will deactivating my data network connection via the extended power menu give me more battery life? I assume it would but just want to make sure.
Yes it will

Hey all,
Dumb question here but first android phone so need your help.
I only have 500mb of data allowance with vodafone UK and just recently got a text from them saying im near my limit for the month.
Being at home with the phone I use an app called quick settings to disable mobile data and then enable wifi.
But just used network monitor app and it says that I've not used any wifi.
Can anyone help with what Im doing wrong as dont want to go over the allowance. Coming from a BB never had this issue as they ZERO apps worth downloading
Cheers
I use Network Counter.

Thanks will give both a go. My worrying thing is android market doesnt seem to use the wifi when downloading even with mobile data disabled.
Maybe your wifi sleep policy is wrong, go to settings - network & wireless and go to wifi/wireless settings and tap lower left touch button at bottom of phone and select advanced once in that menu you should see wifi sleep policy select that and set it to never, it means the wifi is always on even when phone is locked. Hope this helps.

@stelo81
Thanks for the 2 programs suggested. Seems network monitor didn't show anything correctly.
With wifi on and data disabled your 2 suggestions show wifi kicking in.
Just gotta remember to switch on before downloading!!!
Thanks again
Hi, when I'm abroad using wifi (so no cellular data), my battery lasts longer compared to being at home, also on Wifi. how can this be possible? shouldnt cellular data be deactivated as soon as i activate wifi?
thanks in advance

Depends on what Wi-Fi network you're connecting to. In theory - 5Ghz network takes more battery than 2.4Ghz or a/b/g network. Also, signal strength also plays it's role - constant low signal forces the antenna to work harder - and at home you always get good signal.
Who knows, maybe that's the reason.
Maybe when you are home the data connection stays in the background waiting for you to drop off wifi network and therefore eats up the battery
but when you are on roaming the data connection is turned off completely to save on data bill
this is just an assumption...
what I usually do is when am at home or work, I turn off data and turn on wifi manually instead of letting the phone choose for me. I've found that this helps in conserving battery
No, thats not how it works.. Your cellular data connection is active, just unused.

I do this too, in fact I use Llama to do it for me. It saves a lot of battery.
Thanks, that's what I thought. But why can't android simply deactivate data when connected. I don't get why there is no such option.

Cant believe i had to download one or else my 3g would be on. Now i didnt see the need to download one for bluetooth wifi etc as the pull screen is built in so im very shocked its not part of the phone! Luv the note but samsung get it together lol

i also wondered why there is no direct option to turn off 3g from drop down notifications? i switch constantly and it is frustrating not to have it while some do
the apps you can get from market dont do it directly - they just take you to the settings page which then you have to further click twice
however my friend who had an s2 with orange network in the uk which had this option in the drop down wheras the s2 with tmobile didnt - confused
I'd recommend Widgetsoid for all your toggling needs. It's free and
provides all the toggles you might ever need.
Press and hold the power button, it brings it up on the menu right there.
Simples!

As someone else has said, press and hold the power button....and the 3g toggle comes up. Also, there are 3g toggle widgets that don't take you to the settings screen, I have one....it turns 3g on or off right from my home screen.

that is data network mode on/off right? we still need to go to settings if we just want 3g off but gprs/edge on. we have to depend on widgets/3rd party apps i guess.

I understanding is that when you off data network , 3G data also off right ?
Try Data Enabler widget for switching data on or off.

switching data off is not the same as switching off 3g access

nice app but doesnt solve the problem - the 2g/3g toggle only takes you to the option page where you have to change the setting directly yourself

wish it was that simples but as mentioned in above post enabling/disabling data isn't the same as 2g/3g toggle

are you sure you mean 2g/3g toggle? you will still have internet access when with 2g/3g but 2g (gsm mode) is alot slower than 3g but saves battery

2g/3g toggle is not the same as data on/off - data is still enabled when you have 2g mode on
