[Q] Idiots' Guide to Rooting, Kernels, ROMs, and CWM - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
When I had an HTC Hero someone posted a very helpful Idiots' Guide to flashing the ROM.
I have spent the first half of the evening trying to root my SGS2, most of which was spent trying to understand why it was no longer working, it was hanging on the S logo. The remainder of the evening was spend trying to find a guide to help me how rooting, kernels, etc work together and how I can successfully root and install a new ROM. It may be I missed it so apologies if I did.
Can anyone help me get my head around all this please?
Thanks
Andy

[Q] Rooting and Me

Hi Guys,
Did have a search but I'm not sure i speak the same language as some of the posts I tried to read
Woke up this morning and thought I'd have a fiddle with my Nexus. I'd used Androot to get root. I downloaded ROm Manager....flashed Clockwork recovery, and flashed a few roms....
Here are my questions:
Is that it? Is that how to Flash ROMs?
When I flashed FRF91 Stock Nexus ROM super user wouldn't give me root...ideas?
What's the most frequently used ROM, and can I flash it this way
finally...Am I missing anything or is that all I need to do?
Cheers for help. Not a smartphone noob, but seems I'm an Android noob
I know it's a noob couple of questions but if somebody could help I'd be very appreciative. Thanks
Read the forums. Then ask very specific questions.
2.2.1 was released to block root exploits by U. Androot. Search for rageagainstthecage in the forums or more simply "root F****" please replace asterisks with actual build.
PS: Is there more to Modding? That's subjective. Objectively ...post issues so devs know.

Basically I was asking if the way in which I was flashing was correct but yeah you did help. Will look for the 2.2.1 rooted build

[Q] Need help installing custom rom

so im very new at this, a friend told me that i can install custom roms on the galaxy s...
is there a step by step way in doing this?
bought my phone less than a week ago from BELL Canada, i was told this matters.
please help
Hi, you have alot of Tutorials saying how to install customs roms, just make a small search over the forum =)
the issue is not finding custom roms, but how to flash the phone, or whatever is necessary to install custom roms
Man, don't be lazy. Go to the thread of your preferred custom ROM and the instruction is there at the 1st post.

Need some direction so I can become a valualbe member to XDA

I realize this horse has been ridden before but.. If you can take pity on yet another noob the please read on.
I've been trying to learn how things work with rooting (did that using super one click.. the easy way), and flashing a rom (didn't do that). I've read alot of sites, and lots of threads on XDA and there is alot of information but alot of it is outdated or for old stock ROM's and so on.
Here is my problem I have a rogers samsung captivate i896 running stock 2.3.3. the wiki page for this model assumes you are running 2.2 froyo. I can't seem to find information on how to flash a ROM on a stock 2.3.3 i896 (this could be because I suck at searching or.. I am just stupid). Also ROM manager does not recognize my captivate.
If you could provide me some links where I can read and learn about flashing(for my phone, then hopefully others), kernels, bootloaders, lagfix,,modems and so on.. Man I would really appreciate it.
I drive truck for a living and I really don't have time to search for all the scattered info and stitch it together.
My goal is to learn everything I can about my phone and flashing ROM's and learning and understanding the terminology. If I can do this then I would pass the knowledge onto other people.
I realize alot of you vets and senior members have very little patience for people like myself who don't (or can't) put the time that you have put in to learn. So I can only promise that when I do learn I will pass on the knowledge and hopefully lean how to come up with some new stuff myself.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Here you go. I can't answer questions about it because I don't have your phone. It is called the fugu root method which is what you use to root gingerbread. Good luck.
you do not need root to flash a custom rom...recovery happens underneath the os where root isnt a factor, and any rom you flash will be rooted after the flash.
rom manager is garbage erase it from your memory.
read the 【Guide】How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock (inc. Gingerbread ROMs)
since you are already o ginger bread you can skip step 5,6, and 8.

[Q] Flashing guide

Hi everyone,
After coming from the Galaxy ace forums I've gotten my hands on a Galaxy S i9000
But after some reading and searching for a step-by-step guide on how to flash Rom's on a Galaxy S and what the requirements are.. I'm kind off a loss now. Reading bits here about flashing By Odin and pre-rooting first, I'm kind off confused now.
Perhaps flame will fall down on me and noob accusation finger will point.
But I hope someone will help a fellow custom rom lover out with a step-by-step procedure or point me in the right direction.
Thanks for your time.
Hey
First thing u need to do is to update to 2.3.6 & root it..(link given below..)
Then look for a rom u like and follow those steps to flash it..if u dont get the step pm me the link of the rom n ill help u out..

[Q] Rooting Galaxy S5 Help and questions.......

Hey guys Whats going on. Well Ive had my S5 for a while now. And When I first got it I remember you couldnt Root the phone and One reason was it would Change or mod something with the Kernel. And doing that you would break your warranty on the phone. It has been a while since I rooted and installed Roms, since the droid bionic. Thanks again
Sooo did some reading and now see there is a Root Hack to finally Root these ATT S5 Phones... Can someone Point me in the direction on how to do this correctly?
I have a Kernel Version: 3.4.0 Tues July 22 2014
Android Version 4.4.2
I also would like to Try some Custom Roms. How do you guys Install Custom Roms?
Does we need to install Safestrap? Or any recovery Mod like that?
What I would like to do is get more from my battery as a Full battery barely lasts me a Full day at work.
Thanks guys and cant wait to get some info and advice here. Always great getting Professional Advice than searching and finding 100 different answers.

Now for some friendly advice it would behoove you to learn to use the search function and search appropriate threads for the answers to your questions. Those questions have been asked myriad times by newcomers.
When one doesn't search then one opens doors to get flamed by members short on patience.
I know I've been ripped pretty bad when I first started.
