Took my Captivate for a fresh water swim in the lake this last Saturday. Was underwater for maybe two minutes before I discovered my error. Threw everything into a sealed plastic container of rice and baked it in the sun the rest of the weekend.
Amazingly, after I put the battery & SIM back in and plugged it into the charger Sunday night, it charged! Later, when I powered it up, everything was working!
However, upon closer inspection, the screen is covered with very fine, darkish horizontal lines from top to bottom, giving it the appearance of lower rez. The lines appear in the boot screens as well as the GUI.
Any thoughts on what's been trashed that would cause this?
Any hints to remedy this? Any hope that this is a software glitch I could remedy via a re-flash??

Sounds like your screen is toast. The LCD and Digitizer are fused together and will need to be replaced as one unit. I would say its time to pick up a used Cappy and sell that one for parts. Once they take a swim, there can be other issues that pop up later.
P.S. I have a rooted, unlocked one for sale on Ebay right now
Not the answer I'd hoped for, but definitely the information I needed. :good:
Thanks Red!
ps: going to pass on your ebay Cappy offer...time to start researching my next ATT contract phone. Hmmmm..... Galaxy S III, HTC One X, or dare I step over to the dark side and grab a iPhone 4S?

No problem. I'll be going SIII in the future. Most say you can't go wrong with SIII or the One X. If you want an Apple product, I believe the current rumor says iPhone5 in Sept.

Hey folks, I accidentally left my Captivate in a pocket and it went through a dryer cycle. It boots just fine and the audio works. However, the screen is blue with some lighter blue horizontal lines (effectively it just looks blue). I'm able to navigate by memory through the UI. So it seems it's just a video problem.
I tried a hairdryer for a few minutes on an open back.
I left it open, battery out, sim, sd out for about 2 hours.
Any ideas on ways to attempt to fix it?
thanks in advance!
As an aside, i was just about to install ICSSGS 3.1!
May sound odd but when you boot it up is there any parts where it's a pure color instead of the tinted blue? If so you might want to try a new ROM.
My guess is that the screen is toast from the heat of the dryer. Did it go through the washer first?
Most likely you will be needing to swap the screen.

thankfully, no. Everything I've read so far makes it sound like the liquid crystal is shot.

Any idea whether this is cost effective? If so, any trustworthy places people have used? A little google time left me feeling uncertain about the places selling replacements, and even more problematic, I'm not sure I know what, exactly, needs replacing.
If I don't do the work myself, the cost seems to be about the same as getting a used cappy. Any thoughts out there?
thanks!
I cracked my screen 3 days after getting it. It was about $90 to buy a replacement screen on ebay. I ended up just signing up for ATT insurance and getting it replaced for the $125 deductible. That doesn't sound like an option for you unless you already have the insurance.
I've been told doing the swap isn't that bad. However, you could end up back in the same situation if you mess it up.
You could buy the used cappy and possibly inherit some new problems.
You could get it repaired if everything else with your phone checks out. This may be a good idea if you haven't had any sleep deaths or your GPS works well. The downside is that heat could cause the phone to fail sooner in the future.
Ouch... Costs over a hundred on Amazon. I was surprised since iPod touch 4g screens go for like $20

I think it is due to the construction type of the screen. Since it is all one piece, you can't just replace the glass or the digitizer. It's an all or nothing which drives the price up.
There is a difference between the screen and digitizer. Screens go for the $90-$150 cost (more or less) digitizers cost usually $20. Mobiletechvideos.com charge $150 for new screen and digitizer and the actual work to do it. Kinda expensive IMO, but each their own. I can probably get a new phone for $150 where I live.

Not really, but I do notice when I bring it out of sleep there are some vertical lines that pop in and I can see shadowy bits of the UI. I keep hoping if I let it sit, plugged in...

These are the two same thoughts I keep having... seems like going the cheap route is pretty risky. I have an upgrade eligibility coming in April. I just hate signing a 2-year agreement with AT&T right now. Service at my house isn't great and I'm already paying for the microcell.
All in all I've been very pleased with the captivate. I've been upgrading ROM's quite a bit, and found the device to be pretty reliable. So sad to see it in this condition...
You're paying for the microcell still? When I asked about it, they told me if I were to get it thru them at the discount price, that I only had to pay the extra cost one month, discontinue the extra cost on my account, and the microcell stays active. I believe the extra cost was unlimited minutes at the time I asked. Could be different now though I guess.
Sorry to hear about your screen, but all I have seen is what mobiletechvideos offers. I was looking for a friend, because her screen cracked up by the speaker. It doesn't affect anything, she just dislikes having a cracked screen.
Hi all, this is my first thread.
I would like to share my recent discovery with you. Three days ago I bought Samsung Galaxy Note I (one) and I love it. However, I immediately noticed a large circle in the middle and a small one in the lower right section of the screen. It can only be clearly seen when there is a grey background (I noticed it when starting Market for the first time). I immediately installed a couple of screen test applications and realized that all the colours are fine, there are no dead pixels, just these kind of "imprinted" circles that I cannot erase. I did search the Google and this forum and realised that some users have the same issue with the SII (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1087236&page=4), although at the different places of the screen.
Today I found out the cause of the circles. By looking at the advertisement sticker that I peeled off the Note, I realised that the Samsung original sticker is the cause of the deterioration of the screen at these places!
Look at the two attached pictures and see for yourselves. Just to be clear, they are not dust or grease or something like that, the circles are "inside" the screen. And it is obvious that the patterns are the same as coloured adds on the sticker.
How can that be possible? Can it be that the phone spent a lot of time under the marketing glass at the store and that some kind of chemical reaction occurred under exposure to light?

Wow!!!!
The only thing that comes to my mind is that your particular Note was some sort of display unit behind a counter or glass shelf.
Let me explain... Since our super-mega-screens are AMOLED (meaning organic) based, they tend to deteriorate every time we use them, specially blue colors are the quickest to deteriorate when we use the device.
However, UV light (normal sun light and even fluorescent tubes like the ones in offices and stores) when shined directly to our screens tend to degrade the quality of the display even quicker!
I bet your Note spent way too much time under UV light while the sticker was on the screen, thus creating a ghost image or shadow over it.
Unfortunately, there's no way to fix this.
If I where you, I would return this Note ASAP to the store and explain your findings...
Cheers!

Hi all,
My nightmare continues... After bouncing a couple of times between service store and the seller's store I finally got my brand new Note. Not. I got a new one, but it turned out to be a demo model from another store, and guess what, it also has the same circles and shadows imprinted in the screen. The dealer said that this one has also been in display for almost half a year and to me no wonder it has the same screen issues. So, no luck here.
But the thing gets even more complicated because they do not have another Galaxy Note anywhere, in any store, so they cannot replace it (they returned them all and are starting to advertise Note II, which is a lot more expensive at my carrier's tariff). So I am stuck. I tried to get the DOA form and hopefully will get it through the day and go to the authorised importer here in Croatia and hopefully get a new one or at least have my screen repaired. However, I am not happy to see my new phone going to repair shop, I know that I must get a fresh new one if I return it in a weeks time.
More strangely, the store said that if they return the phone to the authorised dealer they will need to give me the new one and since they don't have it they are willing to cancel my two year contract? And that is the only thing they will do. And I do not want that, all I want is a perfectly working Note.
I will try to go to the importer myself with all the papers and will post back the results. Of course, I do not need to mention that I am very disappointed with the customer service....
I wouldnt have left the store with out either a Brand spanking new Note (Not display model) or without a contract termination.
I know you dont want to cancel, But your paying for a service which isnt being delivered !
Cancel that motherfu*ker and take out a new one with a better provider, Your current one sounds awful !
Tell your new provider that your old provider are offering you XXXXX handset for XX amount per month and if they can beat it, you will join them !
It worked for me I got my mummy the Nokia Lumia for £20 a month (free phone too) as opposed to her old provider wanting £35 per month.
These people dont give a $hit about you, They just want your money, So dont think the promises they make instore will keep because they wont!
Its time to play hard ball if you want a decent outcome!
PS: What sort of provider sells Ex Display models as 'Brand New' ones ? Over here in the UK we call these people 'Rogue Traders' !
Keep us informed :good:
You shouldn't let them do that to you

Well if they give you note2 for price of 1 its not to bad. Its majorly bad they gave you 2 faulty units.
Like above posters, cancel or claim working unit alternative.
Whats the namr of the store? So people can avoid it
Did you get a discount for using a demo product?
Also, always test screen in store. That way you can often exchange on the same visit.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
That is completely unacceptable! They can not sell it as New by any chance! As soon as the product leaves the box it becomes B stock!
B stock usually pays off and you can save a lot of money, but not with smartphones, unless aesthetic if the only flaw, which is rare...
I have a 7 string guitar I bought in B stock, it is completely fine, except for a dent on the finish on the back and the electronics were a bit messy so I got a HUGE discount!
Latter that month bought new pickups and redid all the electronics, taken from an older guitar I barely used, and got myself a limited edition Cort X-7 for 185 euros (something like 200dll)! (which is just plain ridiculous) xD
Be on the look for B stock items guys! You can make really great deals!
Hope you get your problem fixed! Good luck!

Hi all, just to let you know how everything turned out for me... After a couple of weeks of complaining and arguing and loosing my nerves with the store where I bought the Note I, I decided to cancel the contract. So no luck there.
But, in the spirit of a nice Christmas story, I was given a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note II by a friend of mine!
And I am forever thankful and just want to say that the phone is amazing!
I hope you will file a consumer complaint against the store.

Bravo majstore You got GN2 instead of a demo GN1 you have the best christmas gift ever I wouldn't trade my GN1 for nothing (only for GN2) and btw on my note on the back it says Not For Sale lol but it works normally

So my old reliable Note 3 crapped out recently. With the ZeroLemon battery i loved it. but this time it looks like a mainboard fail, that says tmo on it so I don't think i can get the part. unless some loving soul on here has access. ill start a new thread dfor that one.. So I bought Note $. first day: everyuthing was grate. Secund day: no voice network, by which i mean i could text and use the 4gtle and wifi but no calls. the signal strength indicator at the top of the screen had an x through it. so i spent some time looking up my problem. Seems all the s5's and on use a larger sticker that when wet shows a number of red x's not just one. so any last ditch efforts before tmo charges me another 177 bux even though i"m still, l in my 14 day grace period, they at the store say all the problems are water. i took it out of the box night one and let it charge. day 2 it goes screwy. I've included some pics. now I've also hear a dab of bleach will turn red spot back to white. I'm not trying to get one over on tnmo. I'm just trying to prevent myself from getting screwed. heres a link to my imigur galley so the pics can be seen enalkarion . smugmug . com / Note4

its hard to understand due to bad grammer. what does s5 have to do with your note 4. Did you wet your note 4 and those moisture indicators showed? It works the first day... hmm do you happen to be the southeast region of the USA? there is an outage of t-mobile in that area http://www.tmonews.com/2015/08/t-mobile-other-carriers-having-network-issues-in-the-southeastern-us/
https://downdetector.com/status/t-mobile/map/
if you seriously think that the note 4 has problems and you didnt drop it in water return it and exchange for another one since you have the 14 day grace period.
Sorry for the grammar and spelling, I was extremely tired. The comparison of the s5 and the note 4, were to show the differences in the water sensors. I actually live in se pa and have 2 other TMO phones that work, so I guess that's out. The TMO store wouldn't let me return it because of the supposed water damage. I'm going to try again when there's hopefully a new staff working.
Hi all, yesterday my beloved shamu was knocked out of my hand at a party straight to the floor, resulting in a cracked glass and display, with lines of green shooting up and parts of the display going black, eventually the screen just gave up, I'm very upset
I've replaced a screen before on a phone, a samsung galaxy s3, and that went fine, so should i replace my screen, or just put up with having the S8+ I've just pre-ordered a few days before this tragedy
After using Wugs toolkit to record my screen and see my shamu still alive under the broken front, it really tugged my heart strings (I know it sounds lame but this is by far the best phone I've ever had) and has really got me considering spending out almost the cost of a used Nexus 6 to repair it
I've found this website for the UK for replacement parts
https://www.replacebase.co.uk/motorola-nexus-6-replacement-lcd-touch-screen-original/
https://www.replacebase.co.uk/motor...cd-touch-screen-assembly-with-frame-original/
These look like pretty genuine parts and are one of the first search results on google, does anyone else have a source for good parts or are these the best I'm gonna get without shipping for so much money because it comes from the US
I'll have enough money next month to be able to buy this screen and not worry about the cost of the part, and the replacement isn't hard as long as I've got the right tools.
I planned on still using my shamu even after i got the S8+ to take on trips etc and just a second phone just in case, i was also going to use it to go running and basically as a work phone
So what do you guys think, replace the screen and risk messing it up, buy another Nexus 6, though i don't feel I'll love it as much, or just go with the S8+ for everything?
Thanks all

Hello,
Ordered a HTC one m7 a few years ago and 2 LG G2 from this site: https://www.etradesupply.com/catalogsearch/result/?warehouse=0&q=Nexus+6
I don't know about shipping rate from USA, but from China to France it was $15. Nice packaging and no problem with the screens. The 3 screens looked 100% OEM. Display quality was also on par with original screen.
There is also https://www.parts4repair.com but I never ordered anything from them.
I can't speak for Samsung phone was as I simply dislike those. Nexus always gave me the best freedom and customization.
Cheers...
So, I have had my Nexus 6 it came out... I have always boasted about how ungodly huge it was for a phone, and how amazing it was for literally everything.
I installed ROM after ROM after ROM after ROM and on and on and on...
I showed everyone I met how having stereo speakers facing front with a huge screen put any new flagship to shame.
I loved making the comment that this was the only phone i knew that the speakers could actually get waaaaay TOO LOUD.
This was even the only phone I didnt run at full audio.
If someone was showing a youtube video, or even looking at images I'd scoff while pushing away their phone and whip my Nexus 6 out for viewing or research pleasure.
I found satisfaction and relaxation in rubbing the dimple in the back.
This phone was even the original fidget spinner. I constantly found myself spinning it on a table while talking, listening, concentrating. I'd make designs on the screen with the smudges of my finger.
And now, its dead. One flawed "waterproof phone bag" and its dead. I feel like I am in mourning. Nothing new is any good. They're sleeker, faster, all fancy - but they aren't the Nexus 6.
Maybe the Pixel 2 will be the new puppy I get - or maybe i just get another Nexus 6. It's sooooo ironic that after 2 years, there is NOTHING as satisfying as this phone.
What do you think i should do?
R.I.P n6 T_T . I hope nothing bad happens to my nexus.
@ph0tiC: Buy another one on Swappa.
how long was it wet? fresh or salt water? perhaps the battery shorted? mine took a dunk in the lake with no ill effects. I have a 32g phone that i purchased with a bad battery and robbed the screen when mine broke. . Maybe a motherboard swap could work? Willing to donate. Perhaps a new battery? could do a good cleaning while apart too. Who knows....

I agree, I have been able to save a few phones from drowning by taking it all apart and giving it a thorough cleaning with 90 percent alcohol
Call motorolla. Mine was dead also. Wont even turn on or anything. Called then for a replacement and they cahrged me for $175 before tax mine was 64gb maybe 32 is cheaper. They sent me like almost new conditon. Im happy that my n6 is alive again.

I due an upgrade and have looked at ever phone on the market but none compare to the n6, so I feel your pain
gonna flash this baby to give it a new lease of life, just need to decide what to go with.
Some leftover new-in-box 32gb blue stock just went up for sale on dailysteals for $220. Can't post outside links yet but it's a quick Google away.
My n6 is still going strong but I picked one up as a backup anyway. As far as I'm concerned, this phone is the Android high-water mark. It has all been downhill from here.
