[Q] Help me out!! flashing custom ROM - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently on a rooted stock ICS (DDLPA) with speedmod kernel k3-3, and im a newbee to flashing a custom rom:fingers-crossed:, just want to know how to flash a custom rom that is safe from bricking in simple steps, and i want to know which rom is best also with some stock holo theme flavors on it?? please members help me out:crying::crying:

What custom rom do you want to install? Read its first page and you should get instruction on how to install it.
PS : consider using the "search" button

First of all, please do flash custom ROM. You lose so much using Samsung's bloated firmware... If you're after Holo Theme, you're after AOSP based ROMs. The best options in my opinion are:
- CM9 if you want fast, clean and smooth rom.
- AOKP if you want rich options etc.
- Paranoid if you'd like to use Tablet/Hybrid UI.
How to flash ? Look any of those ROMs up and follow instructions. Usually what you have to do is:
- Root and install CWM via automated Zergrush script, so it's really a one-click operation.
- Flash a .zip in recovery
- Do a wipe ( if on safe kernel )
- Reboot and enjoy
It's not difficult, simply follow the instructions in ROMs thread, and if you need any help - just ask.

Just use titanium backup to remove unwanted apps. There is a list in the themes section on which apps is safe to remove.
Alba rom is stock and runs fast on speedmod k3-3. Again, you can remove whatever app you wish to.
There is a script on themes section to automatically remove all the bloatware.
Keep on reading.

You can surely flash Rocket Rom V7 from Sepedmod kernel coz its a safe kernel...Boot in Recovery....Do a full wipe (Data,Cache,Dalvik) den flash the RRV7 zip...Nd you're done....You might lose root....So after a reboot flash the attached CWM SuperSU zip without any wipe.....ND REMEMBER NEVER WIPE ON ROCKET ROM WITHOUT FLASHING A SAFE KERNEL AGAIN....coz RRom installs CFRoot kernel which is not that safe....so its better to flash a kernel like franco or speedmod after flashing the rom....nd also before flashing a custom kernel use the jBroid cleaning script attached....just flash it before flashing the kernel....(Press THANKS if helped)

Its written Abyssnote kernel bcoz earlier that was the only custom kernel considered safe....but now with the kernel source code being released Speedmod and Franco Kernels have MMC_CAP_ERASE removed which triggerred the brick bug...therefore its safe to wipe from these kernels....Just follow the steps I mentioned....and if u wanna use abyss kernel (i.e. method b2) then okay....but you are just wasting ur time....Coz speedmod is SAFE....(press THANKS if helped)

I am also on Rocket Rom V7...that's why I can say dat its safe....U can go through the threads of franco nd speedmod kernel...Its written there only that they are safe due to removal of MMC_CAP_ERASE....the only difference in my method nd dat explained in the RR thread is that they are using safe abyssnote kernel nd I have asked to use the speedmod kernel on which u currently are nd which is also safe...I was just giving u a shortcut which is also SAFE...Don't forget to press THANKS

Good to hear that....

:cryingooo,, gotta problem, everything seems fine, but after sometimes my note is freezing and restarting, is it because of the kernel which i use? waiting for your solution:fingers-crossed:

its possible, some users have mixed reviews about franco's kernel, try an alternative like speedmod.
did you do a full wipe before changing roms ?

you cooled me down azzledazzle!! just now flashed speedmod kernel and yet to see any reboots,:good: and one more noob question, apart from custom rom, what else can i do to my note to get the best out of it? some points can be helpfull

what cant you do ??
you can tweak the **** out of it, install a load of init.d scripts, theme it, add a ton of mods. just keep scanning the themes and app section for new mods

Follow instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash
They usually don't mention the kernel, only the rom :/

The kernel is pretty much always included in the.zip, if you want to change from the ROM kernel to another, then usually just a case of using a cleaning script, or manually clearing cache/dalvik and a couple of others (init.d & Ns tools usually) and flash away
upgrade 2.2 to ics
You have to burn GB stock-rom 2.3 with odin first !!!
after you finish you need gb kernel like semaphore 1.8 also burn with odin (give the stock root).
and finnely flash the ics rom you wont (with the dev Specific rom Guidelines)

Afaik you don't need gb bootloader to flash to ics, (see slim website) however it is a good idea to in case you want to revert to gb, but in that case it is easier just to flash the boot loader....see nitr8s ezboot thread

[Q] PhilZ-cwm6 kernel not showing on about phone

hey guys.
this is my first post on this forum..

if i can..
should i flash another kernel for a custom rom ?
and what rom you recommended for me ?

thanks
If you have flashed Phillz kernel, you will have same kernel description as stock, b'coz phillz kernel is stock + patched for brick bug + root+adv CWMR
-You will have advanced CWMR, and you can flash custom ROM safely. It is recommend to wipe cache and data before flashing custom ROM
You can find custom ROM on android deve section, read OP of custom ROM, and few post after that for any instruction from developer. there you can find features of ROM and installation method
Decide yourself which suite you best
GoodLuck

for the flashing custom rom
should i flash other kernel ?
or keep stay on Philz Kernel ?
or maybe just follow instruction for that custom rom thread..

Custom ROM should come packed with kernel
So it will get change once you flash it. Later if you want to change, find out which is best supporting for your custom ROM and you can change.

You can use Philz kernel as your base to flash any custom rom. Usually the instruction to flash custom rom requires full wipe, i.e. wipe cache/dalvik/data, and Philz kernel is SAFE to do full wipe.

Very useful thread!
A Must-See for new users that want to root their S2.
Just one more question, if I want to upgrade the CWMR in the future, can I do it in the CWMR by "Install zip from sdcard"/"Choose zip from sdcard" ? Theres no need to worry about the kernel, right?
Thank you
I am in same situation, is there a way to check if Philz kernel is properly installed before doing the wipe, just to be safe,
any info will be greatly appreciated
If you kernel is flashed properly then you should have advanced recovery.

[Q] Newbies On Rom & Root

hi guys im new to roms , kernels and roots. So what i have is a samsung galaxy note which is kinda outdated using gingerbread 2.3.6. Since i saw lots of post about fantastic rom such as the rocketrom , alliancerom and alot more and they also come with JellyBeans.
The main problem i facing is , i would like to know about the facts that after playing with roms what will happen to my phone ? i mean in future will the devices gone wild or maybe dead. I have no idea wth that , so i hope someone enable to give me some advices and consequences of doing these. Any helpful tips will be much appreciate. =)
i wish to change my phone into rocketrom with the latest version of it. so is there any kernels that i can use which is absolutely stable & brickfree.
THANKS FOR ANY HELPFUL TIPS =)
running GB... and want to go to JB
1. root
2. install CWM
3. download Rocket rom on to storage
4. boot into cwm
5. wipe data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format /system
5. install the rom
do a lot of reading
Playing with roms doesnt make your phone go wild or get bricked until u flash a rom in a wrong way
And you always need to be on a safe kernel before u flash a rom
As u are on gb,all stock gb roms are safe to flash..so root your phone and get cwm
Then do wipes and flash the rom

All gb roms are safe to flash..so just get rooted and flash rocketrom
And rocketrom comes with a safe and brickfree kernel,so its not required to flash another kernel after u flash rocketrom
And i guess there are no other kernels compatible with jb roms other than the philz kernel that comes with the rom

i second that.. use Philz kernel that comes with the rom. Tested i flashed Hydracore and my phone wont boot. had to flash back RRv2 JB.
hydracore v7 does not work with the tw based roms jb as of now. and will not work until an official jb rom is released.

btw how bout kernel which fits properly without brick with RocketRom ICS V12 :laugh::laugh:

[Q] Which rom to choose now i am on Philz Safe Kernal ?

O K so i have just flashed Philz Safe Rom XXLRK-XEU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 to my note and everything seems as it should but i am a little confused as to what roms i can apply. Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place my head is a bit all over the place after reading a lot this morning deciding if it is safe to start rooting/flashing my note, my only previous experience of this was through odin for my sgs2 so i am new to the note scene.
Ideally i would love to put paranoid android on from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802 but i am cautious that the install logs states not to install this rom from a stock kernal which is pretty much was philz kernal is isnt it ???
if anyone can help a newbie to the note scene out i would be greatly appreciated as i am getting confused going through all the searches i have done this morning
Hope you can helpo - cheers
KV3
when you flashed Philz Safe Rom XXLRK-XEU.. your note is already rooted now.
This kernel is safe and you can flash the PA rom with no issues. Just follow the procedure in the PA thread.

Thank you - i will check it out and report back
Is this the case with all roms or just the PA rom, am i to presume that the "safe" kernal is just that and i can go and try out a few roms just as i did with my sgs2 ?
Thanks
KV3
Yes.. but when you flash a new rom, the kernel will change to whats included in the rom. In between if you choose to flash stock ICS again, need to take caution to move to safe kernel again
thanks again for the quick responses - is it best practise to always reflash a safe kernal after the rom has been installed, so in the case of me flashing PA rom i can then reflash Philz safe kernal - i am sure i will get to grips with it all there just seems to be more risks involved with the note / ICS than when i was working with my sgs2
Cheers
No. All custom roms will have a safe kernel in built. Philz won't work with custom roms as it's a stock kernel. Best is hydracore but that does not work with the JB leaks of Samsung TW
all up and running and everything seems great with the PA rom - no complaints here yet but i havent had much chance to play with things with work and all that other stuff so thanks again nokiamodeln91 i have clicked your thanks button for all your help

[Q] Flash safe kernel before and after flashing rom?

Hey everybody.. Finally i got some strength to flash rom on my SGN.After going thru bunch of posts i got that sgn is affected with brick bug.
So i followed Philz guide about flashing Philz kernel. I have some confusion that
**DO I NEED TO FLASH PHILZ SAFE KERNEL ZIP BEFORE AND AFTER FLASHING ROM**??
Also,Is Philz kernel compatable with all types of ROM available for SGN? If not then which kernel?

What ROM have you flashed exactly? Philz kernel is only compatible with Samsung (Touchwiz) Roms. If you have flashed a new ROM chances you are using the built-in kernel.
See...if you have read carefully then you have noticed that the brickbug is present in ics only.brickbug isnt present in gb.and for jb i am not sure....
As far as philz kernel is concerned it is based on touch and present for ics and jb.

You don't need to flash the kernel after flashing the Custom roms, since almost all custom roms will have safe kernel with them.. on the other hand, you will have to flash a safe kernel after flashing the rom, if you are flashing a stock ICS rom..
What if custom rom doesnt come with a safe kernel?
There aren't generalized rules covering all scenarios. You'll have to mention from which rom you are going to which rom.

keep alternative tar file of a safe kernel compatible with your present rom on sd card and then flash it through mobile odin - this method of switch over is safe
those unsafe kernels have certain distinct plus points, thats why the devs put them in custom roms and if you are an expert and can handle them ......surf on them and feel the difference...... (not for newbies and noobs)

this is how i flash my galaxy note but im not saying its how u should do it: i usually have the rom in my sd card cmw as well as well as superuser. then i flash cmw and then super user..reboot system..after being rooted i then flash a safe kernel after flashing i reboot recovery which is the new kernel recovery ..there i wipe and clean everything..then i flash rom..so to answer your question, i would say flash safe kernel before flashing rom as most roms require a clean install for better performance
good luck..oh i am also a noob..running alliance rom 1.1

To answer your question, if you need to flash a kernel, it needs to be done BEFORE you do any wipes.
If you flash a custom rom, chances are it comes with a custom kernel as people have mentioned. Mostly, these are safe. But to be sure, make sure that you have flashed a custom kernel and rebooted to recovery before you wipe. If this concerns you greatly, then follow the advice in Dr. Ketan's excellent rooting thread, and install the stock rooted Gingerbread rom provided there. This has a stock kernel, but as it is Gingerbread, it is completely safe to wipe. You can then go and flash whatever you want on top.
