Rumours:Android 5 jellybean expected later this year. will G.Note be updated on this? Will this solve eMMC bug?
1) Android 4.1, not 5.0. Jellybean is 4.1.
2) Unlikely except for the usual community effort.
3) The fault (as far as I am aware) is a eMMC firmware fault and can be WORKED AROUND with patched kernels but not fixed. So no, its unlikely JB if we get it will make a difference (again, except for the community effort).
Yes as said Jellybean is Android 4.1 not 5.0! As far there has been no official news about the devices receiving this update. The only thing we know is that the nexus 7 tablet will be releasing with this and Galaxy Nexus will be the first phone to get this update. However after seeing that JB will support the hardware on the Nexus it is most likely that the Note will get the update as well. As far as eMMC bug issue, they cant fix the chips that have the issue but they can include a patch in the firmware update that prevents the eMMC chip from being erased!
As endingcolt said, Nexus is officially getting 4.1 and Note is basically the same hardware...so i don't see a reason not to get an update.
All i care about, anyway, is CM10 support - hope they won't abandon Note.

Hardware is the same. Only problem I see is the S-Pen enhancements to be made to JellyBean. Not sure how long Samsung takes to do that, if at all they think of doing it.

will samsung galaxy s get more updates or this update 2.3.3 XXJVK is last update ?
in my opinion after using JVK, it still got bugs (beta) and there will be more updates,
2.3.3 is
1st not officially released
2nd. other than Europe its not even leaked.
so logically yes I am expecting more updates...rest Time will tell
Samsung have the answer nobody else .
jje
3.0 honeycomb is for TABs. No way SGS's gonna get it. JVK is raw beta, sweeter versions are coming I guess.

2.3.3 will be the last update, jvk is not official so there will be a series of ROMs available via Kies.

Because his Desire wont be getting any updates in the future
On a more serious line, if the next updates will work on SGS the update will be taken into consideration... but as we know it SGS 2 is being released in the near future they will stop support for the sgs and focus on updating the sgs 2 to make people buy it
Sadly marketing and sales are everything for these companyes....
Why do some people think JVK was beta because of a few bugs? there have been far worse official kies releases in the past. It may well have been a beta just don't expect perfection if we do get another release, you'll only be disappointed. Personally JVK has been one of their better firmwares, I would gladly have this via kies. The only thing stopping me from using it is the lack of source and voodoo, anyway, I do believe we will have more updates, well I hope so anyway.

i think its weird that Samsung are still releasing more froyo versions so close to an official GB version release. With that in mind, hopefully there will be many GB versions from different regions around the world, just like froyo.... Wont hold my breath.
An additional question - Will the next android release (2.4?) be able to be adapted to SGS with no Samsung support e.g. CM8?
I think that we will continue to see more froyo builds for awhile, as not all carriers and regions will be upgrading to Gingerbread, or at least not at the same time.
Parallel to that I imagine over the next couple months the official Gingerbread firmwares will start, so like Froyo, we will have many different 2.3.3 builds from different regions to argue about and play with, likely appearing throughout 2011.
The next announced build is Ice Cream Sundae, that is 2.4. As this is said to be an extension of Gingerbread, I imagine it will work on the SGS, but as by the time it is released the SGS II will be out for several months, I wouldbe VERY surprised if we see an official Samsung SGS firmware based on 2.4 However, I am sure we will see some SGS ROMs based on 2.4 here in XDA, so do not fear...we haven't hit a dead end with this phone yet.
As for Honeycomb (3.0), it is optimized and designed from the ground up for tablets and larger screens so even if it could be ported to the SGS, I don't see why you would want it to be.
Well, after looking at the code for JVK olny for a few hours, Supercurio said on twitter that it has a major security flaw and that it probably is an unfinished version of the firmware that will be released officialy. Based on his track record I trust Supercurio.

Another Gingerbread firmwares - yes. Official Ice Cream firmwares - most probably no.
Truth is, nobody on here knows anything about future updates, the most anybody can do is speculate. If you had believed what people on here thought about the update probability for the Galaxy S upon its release, you wouldn't have believed we would even have froyo by now.
Wait and see.
As promised GB will be the last update to i9000
Hello Every one,
Gingerbread will be the final update for I9000,
The Version 2.3.X will be release to all the I9000 model.
There will be regular update for the Gingerbread only (Bug fix & Perfomance update).
Version 3.0 will be not given to i9000, But we can opt to Custom ROMS for V 3.0.
Samsung will constrate more on S2. Samsung Promised only Gingerbread for i9000. No more future OS update. (Gingerbread updates only)
I have heard that Icecream will be a merge of gingerbread and honeycomb and will be version 4.0

Samsung will have an easier time rolling our updates because they produce the nexus S which is essentially a glorified stock GT-i9000. It'd be bad PR to stop producing updates. Samsung knows that if they want people to buy their new phones they have to support their previous ones.
My update will be to the phones after the Tegra 2 generation. And if my Galaxy S is stuck at 2.3.3 in Q4 2011 my next phone won't be a Samsung.

How about some proof? Did the Samsung PR team come to your house and tell you there will be nothing past 2.3.3? If they didn't then shut your mouth and form your post in the form of an opinion. Not as a statement.
I like os version more than costum rom
I am using Samsung Galaxy S android version 2.2, I want to update it to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 or which ever is available. I read the instructions but I did not understand anything from it. I am doing it for the first time so I want to know step by step details or if there is any video. I also want to know few things
1- Will android market work
2- Will the phone have lags or speed get slower in the video it did not but I want to know.
3- Will I get all feature of Ice Cream Sandwich
4- In future if company releases 4.0 for galaxy s can I roll back the changes and turn it back to the original version which was there and if yes then how??
I have never tried such thing so I want to be sure before I do it. It looks pretty good in the video.
Firstly, welcome to xda. There currently isnt a proper samsung version of ICS for the galaxy s. What there is are several custom roms people have made based on ics, which if you read through their posts you will see that most of them still have issues and/or bugs. If you check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593 these guys are getting closer every time to a full working version of ics for the galaxy s.
So, choices for you are wait until samsung release a full version of ics (which looks very doubtful) or flash the afore mentioned ics rom or flash a different rom that takes your fancy. Myself I am flicking between this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344489 (my current rom) and saurom.
Once you decided what you wanna do, then let us all know and we will guide you in the right direction.
My advice is to stay on samsung based ROMs for now. ICS ports are still alpha, although some people are using them for everyday. On the other hand, most GB XXJV? and XWJW1 roms are running quite fast on the Galaxy S. Coming from 2.2 you will see a big difference going into 2.3.6.
My personal choice is SURFACE v8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155776) with the IceCreamS theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386990).
Good luck!
I would like to knw when the full working version of ICS is available so tht before I update I could assure myself being safe to update the phone. I am not waiting for Samsung update but I want a proper Rom which suits the phone
Samsung said it won't be releasing any official ICS on Galaxy S. So all ICS work is made by dev teams, using the ICS source code and ICS releases on similar hardware (Nexus S). Most (all?) ICS ROMs are based in teamhacksung ICS port. You can see them in the Development forum (OneCosmic, Surface v1, MyICS, ...)
Some devs will say that their roms are release-candidate, finished or even official, but be careful with this, the teamhacksung port is in alpha stage (build 11) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593). Moreover, there is no public roadmap for an official version and the devs don't like to be asked on ETAs.
I suggest you to read that thread to see what is and is not working in each build. Also, you can get answers to most of your questions (except ETA) on the CM9 discussion thread in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387937).

Given that you have no experience flashing custom ROMs, I would also have to suggest avoiding the alpha ICS builds right now. Things will probably go wrong, whether majorly or minorly, that you aren't accustomed to dealing with.
Wait until a stable version is available, or at the very least a beta. However, in the mean time, I would definitely recommend flashing to 2.3.6. As someone else already mentioned, it will be a nice upgrade over 2.2, and it's an easy way to learn the basics of flashing ROMs.
Good luck!
First get to Gingerbread and then go for ICS if you really want to.
Good Afternoon,
Haven't posted here in a while, hope everyone's well.
I need some assistance, I am trying to Root my Galaxy Note,
and get it to run ICS. I read that samsung was to release
the ICS 4.0 for the Note, but haven't seen anything about it anymore.
My main reason is the face unlock. Really want this feature,
I bought an app that does it, but it's buggy.
So i figured i'd turn to the experts.
Here are my stats:
Unlocked, Bought in Germany (still in germany
Model GT-N7000
Android Version 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-n7000xxla4-CL886827 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XXLA4
Soooooo, what do you think?
Well, ICS is coming to Note. There has already been an early leak (by early I mean they are not yet suitable to most users because of bugs etc) and custom ICS ROMs are also coming out more and more.
Last thing I heard officially was that the official release will be here Q1, so that would mean this month. There has been some speculation that we will only see a Galaxy S II release on March and Note will be later, but, as far as I know, that is just speculation and not official.
So, just wait and see - it'll be released comparatively soon
added: sorry, I misread your post and didn't notice that you actually wanted to root your phone and install ICS now. If you do, keep in mind that the current ICS ROMs are still buggy.
If you want to, here is a nice guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509703
If you want root first then follow This Thread
and Installing ICS Imilka AOSP ROM from This thread
you have posted this twidce now
Richy99,
My apologies, i posted under the wrong thread then changed it.
I didn't really want to root, but if it doesn't come soon enough i guess I will.
I got excited and thought cause i'm in germany maybe it was released, and i just freakin updated to Baseband LB1 which means i probably just shot myself in the foot and now will have to wait for the official release.
anywho i guess i'll keep doing research.
Thanks everyone!
(can i root LB1 Baseband )

Are you on one of the ICS leaks, or still have a Gingerbread "unsafe" system?
The Gingerbreak/ICS frankenROMs don't have hardware acceleration working properly (due to mismatched kernel). Thus Netflix, Chrome, Opera and anything else like that won't work.
Yeah I have gingerbread/aokp installed right now. So it sounds like I can't have a non safe system, just the ics leak installed. Is that correct? I still can't deside if I want to flash the ics leak or not. AOKP is nice and all with all its extra features, but for whatever reason, they cannot get data to work. Its pretty ridiculous they still don't have 3g/4g working after several months. Should i just go ahead and flash the ics leak?
It really isn't their fault, it is because the kernel is locked. AOKP-based off of the leak (as opposed to the Frankbuilds based on GB) work much better.
I finally jumped to the leak and atm I'm actually using the stock leak and am pretty happy with it. That being said, if you move to the leak you have to be ok with the fact that you might be off the upgrade path forever. The chance of that happening looks to be pretty small, but nobody can rule it out...
I understand its not AOKP's fault. The stuff they are pulling off is pretty advanced. Its just very frustrating from a users end trying to get data to play nice. I dont want to go to stock ICS because I really love the features AOKP has thrown in. And I dont wont to be off the upgrade path either. So will AOKP ever have solid data or are they going to have to take the stock ICS kernal and build a new AOKP ROM from that?

Bottom line is: a locked Bootloader prevents developers from providing a proper Kernel to the device. So, you don't get the HW codecs with a Gingerbread based ICS ROM, therefore no Netflix. If you install any of the leaked ICS builds, Netflix runs just fine (I can confirm)
I guess Motorola says that it's to protect us "in the name of security", but nobody seems to realize that the root exploits in themselves, already breaks that so called "security", so why not just let us have an unlocked bootloader!
Hopefully with the Google acquisition, someone can revisit that policy, and clarify to us users what it actually means. Moto probably loses customers over that policy.

You CAN have a safe system with the ICS leaks installed. You just have to use the Safestrap v 2.00 and ICS Leak build of aokp. AFAIK Netflix and HW Acc. codecs work with the new ICS leak builds!

I would say they lose some of the die hard users, who *need* to have an unlocked boot loader. Just reading through other posts, I have seen many get so frustrated at the fact that Moto won't unlock the boot loader, that they say they won't buy moto products because of it.
I'm just thankful that people have found loopholes that allow us work arounds, but it certainly adds a lot of complexity, that wouldn't be necessary if they would just unlock the boot loader (as they said they would do).
I get Moto's stance that they need to provide support, and if people are loading custom overclocked kernels, it could certainly cause HW damage, if the chip is running at a speed out of specs, but why not have the users sign something giving up that warranty, so they can do with their devices as they wish.
I'm just saying I think they should reconsider their policy of locked boot loaders, and open up their phones to hacker enthusiasts. Heck, Jelly Bean has been announced, and most phones still don't have ICS! I would bet an unlocked boot loader would have gotten ICS into the hands of users much faster, and in this instance where there is a ICS ROM, but a GB kernel, it would actually provide for a much better user experience.

OK now I'm confused. I've been using the aokp builds for a while and they are the ics build 40 then the date. I've been flashing those for a long time but data is just as bad if not worse on some builds. Can someone explain why even though I have the ics leak, data is still screwed up? I was told data was much better on these builds.

So when will we see Lollipop AOSP roms or even kitkat for that matter? Seems like we would have had some popping up by now.
I would have to think they wont as its easier to use wanam or similar app to customize the ROM also from what ive seen from N910T ROMs are basically just debloated & that can be done easily. I do hope we see kernels but who knows now since lollipop is making it harder to root unless you have the bootloader unlocked. Yay T-Mobile for not locking it…

Well our device should be getting the official 5.0 update soon . After that you should start seeing roms based off stock that are 5.0. I would think until then Cyanogen and similiar Roms based off googles open sourrce could be whenever . I have all the google 5.0 apps already so Im not too concerned for now . We will get ART Runtime with our official update which will be pretty sweet . Not to sure what you mean by KITKAT since the ROM IM running is KitKat??
Factory images were just released today for all Nexus devices. I say it'll be maybe 2-3 months before anything pops up, but really depends on the Devs.
I'd be pretty excited to see official lollipop on my note 4. Hope that comes soon, as I understand it, the note 4 is the current flagship.

Not happening until sometime mid next year, Samsung is known to delay firmware upgrades.
