I can't believe Google made such a big phone! - Nexus 7 General

[/sarcasm]
Google, seriously? Why would you put phone UI on a 7" tablet? That's a little too big for a phone! I'm not gonna buy it now!

I too am questioning this, I gues its to take advantage of the new notification bar features, does anyone know how this will be handled in the tablet interface.?

I really hope it's possible to load the Tablet UI on this. One of my biggest gripes with the iPad is the UI, and I feel like the tablet UI present in Honeycomb and ICS was more landscape-oriented, and felt more like a laptop screen than a phone, which I feel makes the best use of the screen size.
On the note of screen size, I'm really not feeling the huge bezels. Makes me sort of wish Asus threw in a 8.9" of something in place of all that black space, but that's probably just me being too greedy.

its super simple to enable once the source roles out, and even with the stock firmware its just a matter of unpacking frameworks-base and modifying the config.
so, provided google didnt do anything funky to the tablet ui, it shouldn't be hard.

I'll second that, its wasteful and ugly. One day I want a real edge to edge screen!

They are combining phone and tablet more. But I'm sure landscape mode will look like a tablet.

Yeah what is the deal with this? I've been searching for hours with no answers. of all things this is my biggest disappointment. IMO the ipad is a gigantic phone essentially and since the introduction of honeycomb I thought android had the edge here with a layout that gives more resemblance to your desktop not your phone. I really hope jelly bean isn't killing that off

Nope. If you watched while they were demoing games, they put it in landscape mode and it looked just like the Galaxy Nexus does in landscape mode. It's the phone interface through and through.
I'd say the main reason they did this is, as others have pointed out, to show off the notification bar, but even more importantly, the biggest devices that this thing is competing against in the marketplace is the Kindle Fire and the Nook, both of which operate in portrait mode by default. Android's tablet interface is specifically designed for landscape and (as a Xoom owner I can attest to this first hand) doesn't offer a very good user experience in portrait mode.
I personally would have liked to see tablet mode, but given its competition, I think they made the right decision.

Its not the pure phone mode. Its like a hybrid which makes more sense on portrait 7 inch devices. The regular tablet mode is a little awkward on 7 inch portrait devices like the galaxy tab 2.

You people gripe to much.
Regardless of CPU, GPU, screen, tablet mode, phone mode blah blah. Its a 200$ Penta core tablet. That gets updates directly from google.
The updates from google are alone enough for me.

But where will you rest your hands? The bezel is kinda necessary or else you will accidentally touch the edge of the screen.

Really? Then Google's doing it wrong. Phone UI is one of the major reasons Gingerbread tablets sucked, and Tablet UI works regardless of screen orientation. IMHO, books would be better with tablet UI.

This is interesting for a completely different reason too...if they are using phone mode on this Nexus 7, does this mean that it's not really a true successor to the Xoom? Sometime in the next year could we see a true Google Experience Device to supersede the Xoom that has a 10.1" screen and runs stock Android in the real landscape tablet mode? Inquiring minds want to know!

Haters gonna hate. I see nothing wrong with this UI. I even find it familiar and sexy. Stop crying like apple fanboys and just enjoy the thing. I mean Damn they ain't even shipped yet.

I like to think that some code could work out the difference between hand and figure tips. I know some Asus laptops can work out the differences with there touch pads.

Wut. Do you realize how hard that will be to use? If you're using landscape (which you will be a lot), the two bars would be a pain to use.

The only time you'll use it in landscape mode will be to watch movies. Have you ever held a 7" tablet? They fit very nicely in one hand in portrait mode.

if phone mode is such a huge issue and mind you it wont be google knows what its doing, the new launcher negates the need for a dedicated tablet mode by allowing a larger grid for the homescreen and supporting the tablet Ui of applications. You could force tablet ui with by simple lowering the dpi with a quick build prop edit and reboot, problem solved. keep in mind that 800p isnt that much more than 720p like the galaxy nexus, so using phone mode was a wise choise considering the pixels available

Uh yeah I'm holding my 7 inch HTC flyer in landscape now. I don't use portrait unless I have to land that's usually because some lazy developer (Zynga anyone?) didn't make an app tablet optimized

[Q] iPad 2 vs Galaxy Tab

Did a search, didn't find a whole lot on this topic so figured i'd ask since I'm trying to decide between the two.
I currently have a Captivate and can say i love the dev community it has. Running CM7 and its awesome.
That being said, Apple's hardware has always been great but iOS is lame. I previously had a jailbroken iPhone and it was ok at best. iPad is a bit different though, if i was to get one i'd jailbreak it as soon as i can....but more interestingly its looking like OpeniBoot has support for the original iPad so it might have iPad 2 support in the furture. I'm not sure how smooth android would be on it but it would allow me to run both android/iOS on great hardware.
A big factor for me is price, from what i'm reading the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 will probably be around $800 like the Xoom and thats too much for me. Both wifi verisons of iPad 2/Galaxy Tab around $500 which is the price point i'm looking for.
So which would you recommend?
Thanks
Wifi Galaxy Tab will be more like $400 max..
Would you not consider a used/new 3G Galaxy Tab.
The 7" design is great for portability and adding 3G completes the Tab imo..
If its for household use only I would say IPad..
Bear in mind I only own a Tab though not an IPad lol.
Well This is what I think:
iPad 2:
Much more secure
Closed Source
Nicer Screen
NOT PORTABLE DUE TO BIGGER SIZE.
Galaxy Tab 7
Not very secure ( Thank you you SOB's....your day will come ) but still more secure than Windows.
It is PORTABLE ( Can fit into pocket )
You can customize it/Flash it
All in all the Galaxy Tab is a winner IMHO. 7 inches is the PERFECT size ( pls no "****" jokes ) for being more portable and customisation.

RE:
Just got the Tab on Thursday. Bought it outright.
Got the Bell Mobility model so I could put my internet keys' SIM into it.
Two things impressed me:
1.) Using Z4Root I rooted my Tab in seconds and it was simple. (Article on the forums here with the apk)
2.) The fact that I could unlock the device for free with Roto's process (also on the forums), was pretty sweet.
I put the Overcome 1.2.2 ROM on my Tab, an extra 16gb mem card, and have installed a crap ton of apps to test its limits.
Thus far, the device has not slowed down.
It's usable in all lighting conditions, and the battery life is quite impressive.
I get that everyone pushes Apple products because they're the greatest thing since a toaster(and mildly more useful. ), but with the Tab you get freedom, functionality, and portability.
I call that a win-win.
I feel that Galaxy tab is much more impressive, I am impressed by the openness of Android and how you can manipulate it with only a little effort.
Plus, iOS is a shame, with a huge portion of its apps being paid ones, go for the Tab if it gets only a bit more expensive but 800 is way pricier to be sold.

Better quality hardware, bigger screen, and the prices are basically the same. Also openiboot dual boots iOS and android
Galaxy tab 10.1 is the same size screen as the ipad. And where is the documentation saying the ipad has better specs...
On most threads in all the blogs I've read, Galaxy tab beat the ipad hands down... Most threads say the ipad and tabs specs are pretty close with the main difference being screen size (also ipad has bigger battery with a bit better life, 10 hours versus 8). Nowhere did it say the ipad has better hardware...
Personally Apple hype up everything, had the ipod/iphone reps to expand their market with. They aren't any better than anything else out there, in fact I get the dirts with how limiting IOS really is.
If you want something that seems to be developed with the speed of continental drift go with the Ipad, if you want something thats open and can be altered, changed and played with then the Android Galaxy Tab is the go...
When Galaxy Tab 10.1 is released then Apple are REALLY gonna have a battle on their hands, there's a reason Android is liked and IOS isn't.

I also assumed you were comparing the iPad 2 to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 - I think that's a fairer comparison, for the original 7" Tab it's better to compare to the original iPad.
Between the Tab 10.1 and iPad 2 - I'm not sure, still deciding. But between the 7" Tab and the iPad - I went for the iPad, mostly for the bigger screen. If you go the way of the original iPad I'm sure you can pick up a mint condition one for a good price off eBay.
i think it all comes down to what kind of user you are. If you're the type that buys a Mac or any other decent pre build desktop computer and don't want to think about (read:don't understand) what goes on inside it, get the iPad/iPad2. If you're into building the desktop computer from scratch get the galaxy tab/android .

Well my main thing is price. I've been reading that the 10.1 Tab could be around $800, i dont' wanna spend that much. I've seen the 7" Tab for around $500, and the iPad 2 is $500 for the wifi version.
Hmm idk, i think it'd be wise to wait for the 10.1 Tab's official price. If its around $500 then i'll get that, if not then i'll just try n find a cheap used 7" Tab or iPad
I appreciate everybody's input

Not so!
I used to put my own PCs together, but simply can't be bothered any more, so now I own Dells and Macs. However, I choose Android for my phones and tablets mostly because I dislike the control Apple exerts over its mobile platform.

I have the galaxy tab, but the ipad 2 is better.
- dual core
- nicer screen
- netflix
- more RAM (i think)
- apple's market
- smoother and more refined
for me basically it lies on the OS itself
yeah sure, iPad looks / screen is better, but in term of hardware u can't possibly say that iPad 2 hardware is superior coz AFAIK, the chip is manufactured by samsung, and the storage drive is toshiba's
the fast that you saw based solely on the simplicity of the OS itself
you're doomed, not being able to do / mod anything like you wanted to, but in the bright side, you get stability and speed
same iPad hardware but running android wouldnt feel the same way i think, only my opinion though
how hard the process needs to be to provide square beside square beside square and that it opens up when you touch?
my suggestion is go for what you need, and make your own +/-, coz in the end you'll be the one using it ^^

That's a strawman argument. Samsung don't even make the Tegra 2 chips that will power the Tab 10.1. They have a processor, the Exynos (which I suspect is very similar to the A5), but they are using the Tegra 2 because (a) it's the Honeycomb reference platform, and (b) chances are that they don't have sufficient production capacity to satisfy both A5 and Exynos demand.
Just because Apple don't make every single component in their devices (they don't even "manufacture" their own devices anyway), doesn't mean that they don't produce superior hardware (in most cases).
A product's hardware is almost always more than the sum of its parts - it's also how well it is designed and put together. The only time when this is generally not the case, is cheap Chinese clones, which are often less than the sum of their parts!
Regards,
Dave
I think you wouldn't go wrong with either.
However, given you already have your apps in your android phone, you could stick with android, so you don't have to buy them all over, by getting into IOS.
Do you need microSD slot? Then get galaxy tab. Why not get Xoom?
Do you need a large screen? Then get Ipad.

Thats the thing. I love android, but to be honest am leaning towards the ipad2 because the Xoom doesn't seem appealing to me and from the looks of it the gTab 10.1 is going to be a xoom with better speaker placement and lack of a sd card slot.

quick question, need opinions

thinking of getting a note as a small tablet instead of a phone (i'm on verizon and impatient) so is it worth it, can it replace a smallish tablet (i.e. the 7.7 as thats something else i'm considering, or even the 8.9)
i already have a nexus but use that as a phone/business tool
main use would be reading, apps, and some gaming, and web browsing. but really i just want to use it as a tablet, love the screen size and as the resolution is the same as the tablets i'm considering it's essentially the same thing just a little smaller and lighter. i can already read manga on my nexus without scrolling due to the resolution so on the note it'll be alot easier as the screen is almost an inch bigger (technically it is an inch if you exclude the onscreen keys of the nexus)
basically can this be used as a mini tablet effectively enough that my nexus would be pointless?
ps. i'm only considering the international one as i've heard things are better on that one, or is the att one still worth it (i am a bit partial to the idea of the button though....)
Yes it can replace a small tablet, but it is quite small. If your eyes are good, it should be fine.
No idea about the AT&T Note, I have the International. I believe the other has a poorer CPU, but has LTE. If you are not able to use H / H+ frequencies on your carrier's network then you may want to reconsider or be left with Edge as I understand it. LTE is stunningly fast, but H+ is pretty good too.
Well I'm on a cdma carrier in the states so I would only use it on wifi.
Plus I figure I can sell it easier if it's the international version. (only reason I would is for one on my carrier anyway)
how does it run ics?

I never understood myself how this device could even be considered a "tablet," and I still don't. Think of it as a giant phone, and within a few days it's just a normal phone amongst the toy iPhones of the world. I have a Touchpad, and I never use it...so that should answer your question.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was referring to the Note running in 240 density. Then it is exactly like a tablet, but you need pretty fair eyesight IMO.

7 inch Tablet vs 10.1 Tablet?

I already have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi but Nexus 7 brings a plethora of improvements and their is no hope or patience to another year of wait for possibly never to come official upgrade of 4.1.
In your opinion, why would you prefer a 7 inch tablet over a 10.1 inch tablet and what would you miss on 7 inch screen compared to a 10.1 screen?
My main motivation is to get a lighter tablet for reading. 10.1 inch tablet are too heavy to carry on one hand. I would like to use 7 inch tablet as I use 10.1 inch tablet for writing and wondering if loss of 3 inches of screen size will be direct proportional loss in writing productivity.
Thanks.

im having a hard time adjusting to the thought of having a 7 inch tablet.. I have a xoom. Part of me wants the new lighter tab but im afraid ill miss the extra screen real estate.
I think im gonna just go for the nexus 7 and deal with it. I had the same issue going from devices with sd to devices without SD...
I have the Acer A100 7 incher and love it, and now have the Nexus 7 on preorder. I love the 7 inch tabs. Super portable, can fit in your pocket. I had the Transformer but figured that if I might as well take my netbook or get an ultrabook if I wanted to lug something that size around. With the 7 inch tabs you do end up zooming in more on content but to me that's not a big deal.

Major +1 - thin and light, can go in your pocket etc - same res as 90% of other tablets at 10" size, so you arent loosing on screen space, just physical size...
Also, 7" tab is MUCH better to game on, as its easily held in two hands with coverage for almost all the screen without stretching!

The major problem I have faced with a 10.1 tablet is it's too big to hold on with a hand and read. PDFs should look better on 7 inch tablet as most papers are 8 inches wide.
Hopefully, it will not matter when it comes to writing because apps can always adjust to screen size and I will be using a Bluetooth keyboard.
I personally can't justify a 7" tablet. with our almost 5 inch phones, there is just not enough screen real estate to make that much of a difference. 8.9 inch or bigger FTW

I tried the 7" tablet with a Nook Color running CM7 and it was alright. I felt content with it... until I got an HP Touchpad in that firesale. The bigger screen ruined 7" tablets for me. I dont mind zooming, but I do mind scrolling and with a smaller tablet, you have to do a lot more scrolling. It gets in the way of browsing, reading emails or ebooks, writing or editing documents, etc.
As good as the Nexus looks, I'm passing it up for a TF700 solely due to the screen size. But for those who it works for, I hope you enjoy it.
Well you won't be scrolling because the tablet has the resolution of the current 10inch tablets (new tf infinity and Acer aside)

I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, and have ordered a Nexus 7. I also have the Galaxy Nexus, so I have experience with all of the screen sizes brought up here. To be honest, if you are thinking about purchasing a 7in tablet for extra portability/readability, it's a good move. I use my 10.1 for gaming and videos when lying around the house, in the office, or while on a plane. I use the 7in for when I want to read a book or will be on the move quite a bit but still want to game or read on a larger screen than my phone. Sometimes 4.65inches is not enough and 10.1 is just too much. If you're willing to spend the money, I say go for it.

DPI also factors into it. With two displays of the same resolution but different DPIs, the higher DPI will be more detailed but not display as much content as the lower DPI one. In that regard, you are scrolling more. I thought the same as you did when I got my touchpad (1024x600 vs 1024x768, not really enough room to notice extra scrollability on resolution alone).
I'd put my opinion, but that's like comparing apples and oranges. Both screen sizes have their pros and cons.

I have an A200 and KF on my desk right now. When I get up to go read my twitter feed in the family room...I will pick up the KF 100%. One hand vs. two.
IMO, 4.5" (my gnex) is too small to read books on, and 9" (my touchpad running CM9) is too big to read while trying to relax. I think 7" is the sweet spot. The stickler is the fact that larger tablets have to be held with two hands most of the time.
Plus the battery life of the Nexus 7 is just godly. 300 hours on standby? Think about that, almost two weeks without a charge. I don't think even jesus could make anything that good.
I'm really only getting it to game on. 7" is the perfect size for most touchscreen games, and the fact that it will get all the awesome tegra zone games is a major plus. I seriously can't wait to play the tegra 3 optimized version of Shadowgun on this thing. I just hope that someone comes out with a mod to hide that stupid, stupid status bar so I can play my games in true full screen. I really think that the persistent on screen status bar was the single worst decision Google made with android and was the main reason why I returned my galaxy nexus. So glad HTC went with capacitive buttons on the One X.

Are you talking about the notification bar? Most games I've played hide it. Any app has the capability of doing so while it is running, it just depends on whether or not the developer has chosen to do so.
Also capacitive buttons have been common on pretty much all android phones made within the last two years, I think the last phone I had with physical buttons was the HTC Hero, but I got the HTC Evo shortly afterwards (now two years old) which has capacitive buttons, and it wasn't the first phone to do so.
Unless you're talking about the soft buttons? That was originally a honeycomb feature (pretty old) that got carried over to ICS. I don't own an HTC One X, but I'm pretty sure that it uses fixed buttons rather than soft buttons.

While the history lesson is apreciated, I am already well aware of all that stuff, I've been with Android for 3 years now. I am only refering to the persistant status bar/ task bar/ navigation bar, whatever you want to call it. It was a horrible idea on Googles part.

Got to play with a Nexus 7 today!

I met a guy that works for google that has one in his possession. Its a pretty sweet device, and I can't wait to get mine! Sadly, I was unable to take pictures of it, but I got to compare it with my kindle fire, and I from just handling it, it was soo much better! Oh, btw, the nexus 7 fits inside my kindle fire case. No need to get a new one now.
The nexus is just slightly longer than the KF. HOWEVER, the screen area is just slightly smaller than the KF. I didn't have a tape measure to exactly measure the screen diagonal, but it was just millimeters smaller. BUT HOLDING IT IN MY HAND WAS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER than holding the kindle fire. Noticeably lighter. The edges don't dig into my hand. The bezels seem to be a little bit larger on top and bottom than the kindle fire as well. However, the sides seemed thinner than the KF. Sorry I did not get pictures.
The 1200 x 800 resolution is lots better than the KF as well, obviously. I tried to reproduce the screen flicker that was mentioned earlier, but I was unsuccessful. However, I don't think I turned the brightness down all the way before I loaded Chrome.
There is no native camera app, but you can take pictures with google+. I didn't post anything, but the camera turned on. I should have tried video chatting with it, but didn't think to do that.
Oh, he also showed me his galaxy nexus, and he had the backing that only google workers get. Pretty sweet.
He showed me a few more things, and also talked about working for google. I asked him how often people get fired from there, and he said one of the ways is that his nexus 7 had a number on the bezel that was unique to him, so if the images ever got out with the number on it, he could be in hot water. And he didn't want to risk his job working for google just so I could post a few pictures on here. Which was definitely understandable.
This will be a pretty sweet device!
Pretty cool! Here in the Bay Area there's a lot of people that work for Oracle, Apple, etc, but I only know of one person that works at Google. I haven't talked to the person in years though.
Did his have the white backing like the ones given out at Google I/O?
And did you notice a mini HDMI port on the bottom of the device?

This is good to hear. I want a case that's only on Kindle fire and the manufacture told me they have no plans on a Nexus 7 case as of now :-( ... but the Nexus 7 looks to be about 8mm longer, which I *think* will be okay.

Assuming they are both exactly 7" displays; the Nexus 7 has a 16:10 aspect ratio, while the Kindle Fire is 16:9. In portrait mode, the Nexus would be about ~0.16" shorter, but ~0.28" wider.
Incidentally, this means the Nexus 7 actually has a slightly larger screen area than the Kindle Fire.
And the aspect ratio is way better for the nav bar, since it means more vertical space in landscape mode.

Chances are, it probably won't not have. But again, why take the risk if there is a chance?? I can't imagine that getting fired from google for a security breach would look fantastic on a resume. And because he asked me to not take or post pictures when he was doing me a favor, I didn't press the matter.
Crap, now I regret selling my KF with the DODO case, would have liked to try to fit it.

Should I buy this tablet?

I have been contemplating buying this tablet for a couple days after a friend suggested it to me. I have been doing extensive research on the tablet and quite like it as whole but, some things that annoy be about the tablet is:
- Colour Saturation
The colours just aren't as lively as I would like but I guess you could get used to that..still quite a disappointment.
- Up scaled games and apps
Games and apps on the playstore are up scaled for the resolution of the tablet obviously...and this really annoys me because the quality goes down and also a lot of the apps aren't well optimised for the android OS and such.
I have been doing a lot of comparisons between the iPad mini and this tablet and I am mostly leaning towards this tablet but at the same time I think I would probably get the iPad mini if it had the retina display or had a much tighter price gap between the nexus and itself.
The main thing that annoys me is the colours, if that wasn't a problem then I wouldn't even be making this thread, is there any hack or something that a dev created that could possibly tweak these things and make it better?
Basically, the main thing I want to gain from this thread is making a decision to get the nexus 7 or the iPad Mini..
I want to make this decision based on your opinions and experiences and your own decision on which one you think would be better...money aside.
Also, I want to ask as a last question if you think I should wait for the nexus 7" 2 that is rumored to be announced at the dev conference somewhere in may...also do you think there will be a big price difference between the nexus 7" 2 and the normal one.
Thanks.
tl;dr
iPad mini or Nexus 7 or wait for the Nexus 7" 2 to be rumored to be coming out in may. Some problems with the nexus is colours and proper app support and optimisation which could be annoying. Give your opinion on the matter...money aside.
Well honestly, colour saturation on this device isn't to bad. I've had no complaints with the screen at all. And from what I know, the nexus 7 is closer to retina display than the iPad mini. There are actually a lot of apps that look very nice on this device. I'd really recommend getting an Nexus 7. As I made the same decision between iPad mini and n7, I do not regret it

I also holded back with buying it.
I'm happy that I did in the end!
Go for it.
You need to stop listening to and believing everything Apple say. It's rarely true.
Games and apps certainly aren't all upscaled phone versions. The majority of the popular apps you will use all have tablet layouts in them.
The bit that Apple don't mention, is that this means you only buy the app once, not twice... I wonder why they forgot to mention that........
Colour saturation is also another myth spread about to try and discredit the Nexus7, which spanks the iPad Mini on specs, performance features and price... If you really want a differentiator, then look at the screens between the ipad mini and the N7. The N7 is miles better, not only in resolution.
The iPad Mini is an out of date shrunk down iPad2, a rushed out answer to the N7, still hobbled by Apple's fixed ratio 4:3 fat panel format.

I have no idea what kind of unbiased answers you're looking for from a N7 enthusiast forum... These kinds of threads are stupid. Just compare the two devices yourself to make your own judgement.
I like technology, and although I can't be unbiased (I have nexus 7), I'll try to give my as-fair-as-possible opinion here:
Reasons I would go for nexus 7 and not iPad mini:
- ecosystem - if you already have android phone, all those apps will simply work
- great bang for the buck - you get a lot for your 250
- amazing high res. screen with 16:10 aspect ratio. And as soon as you disable the stupid "tegra dimmer battery saver", the colours are as good as on any other high end tablet. Aspect ratio great for movies/TV shows.
- android is really good at being the latest in terms of software. There is always something new happening: new roms, new updates, new cool apps.
- Google now, notifications, multitasking.. as mentioned, android feels fresh while iOS is pretty much outdated by today's standards.
Reasons I would go for iPad mini and not nexus 7:
- gaming. The combination of pretty average gpu (tegra 3) and lack of proper optimization from many games (all gameloft, many ea games) makes nexus 7 only an average gaming machine. iPad mini, on the other hand, runs everything with full graphics and much higher framerate, despite being "iPad 2" hardware.
- larger screen and 4:3 aspect ratio. Yes, it has lower resolution, but larger size. This works well for things like reading or browsing, esp. if you are comfortable holding the tablet further away from face. Also 4:3 is, imo, better for these things. However, movies and TV shows will be significantly worse due to lower resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio.
- Apple ecosystem - if you already have an iphone, many apps will simply work.
- looks. iPad mini is honestly the sexiest tablet I've ever held. It is much thinner and lighter than Nexus 7. And the smaller bezel size looks really good. I'm not saying nexus 7 is ugly - but iPad mini is much better looking. (also don't listen to ppl claiming that the small bezel makes it impossible to hold the device in one hand without touching the screen. I tried it a lot, and never had a problem with accidentally touching something with my thumb.)
\\edit:
BTW, in CNET's prize fight of Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini, Nexus 7 won. I was shocked, CNET was always very biased towards Apple products..
Just go a buy the damn thing you want!!
If you want an ipad mini made from ipad 2 junk scraps it's up to you but i got a nexus 7 and am the happiest guy there is (tablet speaking ).
Yes it's an awesome tablet.
I bought it as a stop gap till the nexus 10 showed up, now I don't feel like I need a nexus 10 no more.
The nexus 7 is so handy size wise. It's perfect.

Nexus 7
The iPad mini does have better color saturation and the most apps. It also probably has better gaming performance. If those things matter to you then get the mini and pay about $100 more.
If open source software and the idea that software should be free as in free to use it how you see fit then I think the Nexus 7 is it. The screen is awesome. I have seen the two side by side and the apple looks better color wise but the resolution on the N7 is awesome. Also looking at it daily I have never thought the colors were bad.
The amount of things you can do and the amount of customization you get is unequal to anything else. Updates are super fast as well. For the price I simply do not see any reason to own anything else. The apps on android work great and most have updated to tablet scaling. There is an app for everything I need and google navigation is the best.
I think Google is a better company than apple for several reasons. They sold this device at cost and develop their software in an open source ecosystem not locked down and proprietary. Sure they want your personal data but rooting and custom roms will solve that. The other thing is the hardware is the best you can get for the cost while Apple sells it's hardware for a premium and usually cripples the device or gives outdated hardware so as soon as you buy your device is outdated forcing you to continually upgrade and buy a new device. Designed obsolescence is Apple's business model. They certainly make good products and good software but their business tactics are worse than Microsoft.
I guess I still have a bad taste from buying a powerpc iBook right before the intel versions came out and the salesperson telling me that they will support powerpc for years and at least two OS versions. Not even a month later intel came out and my iBook was junk. Sure a few months it was good but after that, after Leopard I was stuck with a perfectly good machine but no support. Flash forget it. Oh well that was then. Now I want hardware that is not tied into software. I will only buy Nexus tablets from now on because of the updates and mods. I will only buy Windows pc's so I can choose windows or Linux. I have a friend with a mcbook pro from 08 and no hdmi?? A macbook pro!! My old $500 2007 gateway laptop has an hdmi output??
Enough of my rant. I like Apple products but I just know it is a money drain and no freedom. Other than that they just work great
R
Without a doubt.

iPad mini is good...for sheeple
Just kidding about the Sheeple comment. I like Apple hardware, just not their software and proprietary, curated ecosystem.
The Nexus 7 is thicker and heavier than an iPad mini, and the colors aren't as bright, but I like it a lot compared to an iPad mini because:
1. It's something different than what other people around me already have (apple devices).
2. I prefer to support free or ad-supported software. Google Play seems a bit less commercial than the iTunes store, and that appeals to me somehow.
3. Better customization with android over iOS, ability to root, try different ROMS
4. Much less expensive than iPad mini. I won't be out a lot of cash when/if I upgrade in a year or so
5. I hate iTunes. iTunes is bloatware that never does what I want: simply move files back and forth and organize them how I want. Lock me out of my own device, and move and rename all 1,500 of my music files without warning? I don't like being locked into one single software option for managing my own data files.
6. Works great as an eReader with the Calibre desktop program and a lot of eReading software like Moon+reader, FBreader, Kindle reader, Aldiko, etc., and I can also sync my books and comics between Android devices with these programs. Calibre works so much better than other programs I've tried.
7. My whole life is on Gmail, Google calendar, and so on. Why not go all in with Google?
To me, it feels like Apple and it's flunky iTunes is like some kind of bandit gang guarding the bridge to the internet and customer data, shaking down travelers.
Apple makes excellent, although overpriced hardware, and then tries to restrict how I use it with iTunes, and that doesn't even do what I want. Android offers way more options.
I've had The N7 for about a week now and it's been great, I haven't come across one app that didn't have a tablet UI. Of course the extent of my testing with it was downloading a bunch of free games and playing them for a few minutes. On the color saturation note, i don't see anything wrong with it, I watch quite a bit of anime and colors look vibrant.

The main thing about this quote that I noticed is how you said that google takes my info. I wanted to ask you about in rooting and custom roms would I need to customise a setting of some sorts to enable that or does it do it automatically?
I am getting a nexus 7 guys btw. Made my final decision and I think it is a pretty good one, so yeh haha
The main thing I dislike about my Nexus 7 is the colors being too bright.
For instance, the Tapatalk app has a tan/yellowish background with black text. On my iPad and other Android devices it's a medium shade of tan/yellow. Fairly easy to read text. On my Nexus 7 it's a very light tan/yellow, and also the text does not seem to be a dark black. Very difficult to read text. I rarely use the TapaTalk app on my Nexus 7 because of this. I wind up using my other devices.
