[Q] Best Practices (Titanium Backup, CM7)

OK, so I have CM build #34 and Titanium Backup Pro installed on my Nexus One with all of my apps apps and settings backed up and synced to Dropbox. I also use ROM Manager Premium for handling my CM7 nighties.
I have tried different variations of wiping data and cache\installing Google Apps\restoring all apps and settings with Titanium Backup but I think I am doing something wrong as I usually end up having to enter login and password information on a lot of my apps (once I get them back on my phone).
If my plan is to update to the latest CM7 version every night, what are the proper steps to do so?
Here is what I think I should do:
1. Back up all apps and settings using Titanium Pro
2. Download latest CM7 version
3. When ROM Manager asks if I want to download Google Apps, I check YES
4. After the download is complete, ROM Manager asks if I would like to Backup Existing ROM (I leave unchecked) and Wipe Date and Cache (I only check this if I am having major issues with the CM7 nightie)
5. ROM loads, phone reboots
(Here is where I start getting really confused)
6. Google asks me to sign in. I skip the sign in
7. Join wireless
8. Restore all apps and settings from Titanium Backup
9. Google keeps on asking me to sign in with my Google account.
10 I sign in and usually have issues with Twitter, work email (Exchange), Facebook, etc. Some apps that I know I had installed and configured do not show up but when I go to the Market they show as Purchased and I have to re-download them. Later when I have Twitter and Facebook configured, if I go to Settings> Accounts and Sync, it only shows Gmail and my work email (no Facebook or Twitter). If I try adding Facebook and Twitter, it never goes to the sign in screen. I can back out and see and use Facebook and Twitter on my home screen though.
Questions:
If I am downloading only CM7 nighties, should I download and install Google Apps every night (why else would ROM Manager prompt me for it and include it with every CM7 nightie)?
When using Titanium Backup, should I still sign in to my Google account on my phone or just skip it and restore all settings, apps and data?
Can someone lay out an easy step-by-step best way to accomplish what I am attempting? I think this would help a lot of novice users who want to experience the awesome custom ROMs that are floating around.
Thank you all for your time and effort!
Going from one nightly to another, you do not need to wipe anything.

Then why do I have do I have to keep re-entering all types of logins after upgrading to a new CM7 nightie ?
You say not to wipe data and cache. What about the rest of my post? Any other advice?
Just flashover the top of what u got
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
You should try logging in to Google first before restoring your apps with Titanium Backup. Then reboot. Usually that will restore the list of apps that you installed in the Market.
If not, then clear your market data and cache and do a reboot again.
So I always should install Google Apps every time I get prompted by ROM Manager just before I start installing a nightie? Then just flash the new CM7 version without wiping Data and Cache?
I didn't say anything about flashing gapps again, just flash the newer nightly over your old nightly.

OK, tried what you said (not flashing gapps) and just flashed to the newest CM7 nightie. I also did not delete Data and Cache. Now the Market, Talk, Car Home, Voice (looks like all the Google apps) do not work. I'm getting pop ups stating that I need to sign in to my Google account but when I go to Settings>Accounts and Sync, There is no option for me to add my Google credentials. I see nothing except corporate email and FaceBook (no Twitter Either---and I have that installed).
That is why I was asking earlier if I should get the gapps every time I flash to a new nightly build. Every time I don't download Google Apps along with the CM7 nightie, I always loose a ton of settings and functionality along with not having access to all of my Google Apps.
Btw, I did a full restore of Titanium Backup Pro (all apps and data) after I flashed to the new CM7 nightie b/c of the problem stated earlier in this post.
Any thoughts?
I have no idea what is going wrong then.
Every few days I download the nightly, flash it without any wipes right over top of my current system, and use my phone. All settings stay working, I haven't flashed gapps for a long while now.
It is pretty much a one step process for me. It sounds like there is some sort of strange wiping going on for you though.
I had this issue when I used ROM Manager to download the ROM.
Here's what to do, just download the nightly from this link,
http://mirror1.kanged.net/nightly/passion/
Then use ROM Manager to install from zip, don't wipe or clear anything.
This will let you flash it over with no issues.
Ah, that could very well be it. I am always downloading it manually and flashing from it manually in Rom Manager.

after you flash the new nightly build on top of your current, are you restoring anything via Titanium?
When restoring system data, i found that the order in which its restored makes the difference between things working and not.
I had a similar problem a while back... after a complete wipe and fresh install of CM + Gapps i used TB to restore everything including system app data. after the restore, everything looked OK. If i was to check settings/accounts & sync, everything was there correctly. But when I tried to run a system app, I'd have nothing but problems..(G-Talk & Latitude wouldnt log in, Market was jerked, Gmail would FC...FB and twitter would keep asking for my password..etc). The way I got it to work was to wipe all system data, then in a logical order, restore it again one app at a time with a reboot between each restore.
Its alot easier to just manually enter all account info. Then use TB (if needed) to restore things like FB, Twitter, Wifi & BT settings.
Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but typing this made the bus ride home alot quicker.

Wiped data and cache without Nandroid

Hello I was wondering if someone can help me. I download Cyanogenmod 6.1.2 which was a good mod for my first. I thought I was doing everything correctly, rooted my phone for the first time. I was following steps on how to access the ROM I recently downloaded, but unfortunately upon installing the rom I wiped my cache and data without backing up my Nandroid. Now everything is gone, I lost my contacts, all my data and on top of that I dont have GMAIL to restore my contacts nor do I have the MARKET.
If someone could help me I would appreciate it, or even provide me with a link in which I can restore my phone back to a default setting so I can start over. I tried looking through the forums, and I couldn't find anything. I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places, or subforums.
Thank you.
I don't have your answer, not a droid user, but I can tell you that it's probably a very easy fix. Don't sweat it. Your contacts and gmail aren't stored on your phone.

Well I found out that my contacts were saved VIA gmail, so I found most of my contacts. For the most part I'm worried if I damage my phone in any way, by that I mean losing the Market application in which I can't find when I google market.apk

Did you flash the GoogleApps? With CMx you need to flash it after you flash CM. Google apps include account settup, googla apps downloader, market, etc
When you set you account up you will see your contacts again
The phone is not damaged at all! Stay chill )... As eXtink said, you just need to download Google Apps, put the .zip file in the update folder and run it from Androidiani, just as you did with the ROM. Here's the link (choose the one for HDPI devices). Have a nice day!

"android.process.acore"

solved the "android.process.acore" problem
hey .
i hope it would help the most of us.
its propebly is contects problem , that raises from syncing with facebook.
1. uninstalled facebook app.
2. got into app manager -> contacts storage, and pressed "clear data".
im not sure how but the problem disappeared.
let me know how it worked for u guys.
I've uninstalled facebook app.. Where is application manager and contact storage ?
Edit : Yep I found that. If I install facebook app now will I get the issue again ?
it works, mate. somehow, i just restore my nandroid backup to where the last known good position.
if it's because of facebook, how about changing the app into any facebook app, like friendcaster. will there appear any prob too ?
Cool, I was looking for the solution since a long time. I ll try that and post the results. Well thanks BigBear in advance.
Guys: dont forget to backup your contacts before you clear the contact storage becuase once you do that all your contacs are gone.
You can backup and restore contacts from here
People->Menu->Import/Export
You can select all or perticular groups and then save the export on SD card and then same can be restored.
Did not work

I did the same thing yesterday. It did not work at all, On the contra the error started coming very often and i had to restore my previous backup.
Any other ideas to fix this?
Its something to do with Facebook, don't sync any contacts....I haven't and I've not had a single problem since. Do the first post again, and when you log in...don't sync anything.

Yep.. thats the problem, if you dont sync the contacts there is no problem at all. However I want to see pictures of people in my contact book and those pcitures should come from their fb profile.
I wish there is a solution.
On a different note: yesterday I tried to optmize the STOCK rom for salsa. is there any way i can install CWM recovery in my STOCK ROM without flashing CWM ROM?
I m asking this because STOCK ROM works well if i sync contacts with FB. What I can do is simply use the stock rom and customize it to have optimized behaviour.

yes cwm works with whatever rom! thats the idea. you have the latest hboot, flash in the cwm 5. done. you install any rom you like and it will not affect cwm.
as for the fb pics.....is it really worth it? if it is...save the contacts you have with pics to Google contacts..the pics will be saved there, sync again with Google contacts and they reappear.
it takes up space syncing contacts with fb just for photos lol
BigBearEvo :
Yesterday I spent some time to flash CWM5. Then I went to fastboot and flashed only system.img and left out other things.
I extracted this system.img from STOCK RUU.
FB works just fine now, as i expected. But the real problem is the speed fo the phone. It has become terribally slow. I am not sure why. Here is the complete configuration.
CWM5
Stock System partition
data2st-ext3
ROM Manager 5 installed
Busybox 1.7latest SU installed.
Everything is so slow, that i cant even wakeup my phone quickly to make calls. Is it because I have just falshed system and not other partition from the same RUU? (i dont think so thoug)
It shows .88gb free space on internal memory. still runs like a turtle.
Use a CPU control app, setcpu, CPU master and turn it up! You'll be running between 245 and 480 normally.
And if that don't help you then you have done something to cause it I'm afraid....best way is to back track what you did. Post up your findings ...
What rom are you using? Was it stock anyway or a custom? In all fairness you may find it easier backing you priority apps upper, and wiping the rom, flashing a new one and starting again!
But try the speed up first. See what happens.
I don't ever flash seperate parts, allways a full rom image.
Sent from my HTC Salsa C510e using Tapatalk
Sorry I was away for a long time..
Ok back to the topic...
Changing the CPU speed scares me, I dont want to screw the hardware as I dont have enough money to buy a new phone.
So here is how i solved it.
Reinstalled everything same as i did last time. Same configuration. (Stock ROM System partition only)
However this time i did not run data2st-ext3 script, and that solved my speed problem. Speed is pretty better after this. I suspect that my SD card is not a High Speed Card so that might have caused the problem; as i shifted all the data to SD card.
BUT BUT BUT...
I am now using link2SD and all my apps are installed on SD card and it works fine this way. No noticable impact on the speed.
I am not sure what was wrong. Any guessess? I might try Data2SD again, if you guys really want me to drill this issue.
Bigger SD card requured lol.....I don't get any lag and all mine are on internal memory
Sent from a 3.5 Sensed Salsa
ha ha ..
I have got 8bg SD but I suspect its not high speed. Do you know any way fo checking if its high speed or not..?
I hope the setCPU or CPU master wont screw my phone for ever..
I've just flash a new rom (Clean Rom) and this error occurs. Since it's a "clean" rom and doesn't have fb app installed, how do i fix it? Any help will be appreciated.

[Q] GB to ICS problems

Hi,
I recently went from stock rooted GB to ICS Stunner 1.4.19. Lots of things I liked, but I was used to certain functionalities from touch wizz, anyway here are my questions :
1 - I guess the keyboard with free hand writing recognition is a part of TW ? I was actually using that, any way I can retrieve such a functionality in ICS Stunner ?
2 - the backlight buttons always on or off is annoying, I read about it on the main ICS Stunner thread, I don't know if there's a satisfying solution to this ?
3 - FM radio not working, there's not workaround solution I guess ?
4 - I had a big battery draining problems, again didn't see any solution to this.
Then I tried ALBA because I was not sure I wanted to get rid of TW, and from this small experience of tryings different ROMS, the most annoying thing is to retrieve datas / configurations. I used titanium backup, but here are problems I encountered :
- I thought Google stored some configurations like my Wifi network key, but it doesn't or it didn't set it automatically.
- I realized (yea I'm newbie) some of my datas were on my Google account and some on my Samsung account (or locally on my phone ?). For example, I have some events on my S Calendar that are associated to my Samsung account, some to the Google one. My contacts are all on my Samsung account, because my google contacts has too many people (why does Google add so much people automatically to contacts I wonder). This makes it hard to retrieve all datas, on ALBAs for example I didn't find how I could retrieve my S Calendar / Samsung account datas.
- I used TB to restore only a few apps, with not much success : Kindle had lost it's settings, I had to reenter my account informations, download dictionaries again, etc. Opera mobile crashed when restored, so I downloaded, reentered link account informations. And I can't use TB to restore system stuff (because of different ROMS or different kernels, it's not clear to me).
So my question to all the ROM switcher that wipe their phone ten times a day, what is your best solution to : retrieve wifi configuration, APN configuration, contacts, sms, calendar stuff, etc ?

to 1: There is no easy way to get any Samsung stuff (like TW) running on an AOSP/AOKP ROM. Requires hacking with libraries and the like.
to 4: Try wipe all and reflash ROM again. If that does not help, wipe all again reflash chainfire-repack (I use always Mobile Odin for that), reflash ROM
to you last question: Backup everything ( user apps + system data) and copy it to your PC just in case (I do it with scp from my linux shell and SSHDroid on the Note). Don't restore plain all saved data, but you can restore selected system data (like wifi configuration, contacts ...).
That works fine for me, even when my contacts are saved on google and migrate back from there. You have to find the right items in Titanium for just contact data and such, but mostly on my Note they are colored green and called "Konten", "Kontakte/Anrufe" - but that's a german note. Restore only the data for these system items!

Thanks for answering frabe8378910 !
Too bad for the few S-apps I would have used. Also I'm not sure but I think different pressure for the pen is not supported in ICS stunner.
As for 4, I think I found the cause : there's a "multimedia" process showing in my battery stats , and I guess it runs especially when screen is off because sometimes I would loose several % of battery life when the GN was in sleep note for only a few minutes ! Well, I killed the process and battery consumption seems normal now.
Thanks a lot for the tip for saving contacts, I downloaded sshdroid, I'm on windows but I will use putty, though I'm not sure how it will handle permissions for the files when copied from GN to Windows and back to GN. Maybe I should stick to Titanium...You achieve saving all your datas through "manual" scp copy, or you also use an app like Titanium ?

I use "Note Everything Pro" for drawings and such with the S-Pen. This works fine for some measure drawings before you drive to a "baumarkt" (google tell me it's an english word too ;-) to buy building materials and furniture.
Yes, I save ALL user apps + system data with Titanium and the copy the whole directory (see below) to my PC.
Concerning the permissions for the Titanium files:
- login via putty to your note
- "cd" to the base directory of Titanium backup folder
on my note Titanium would save to: /mnt/emmc/BACKUP/Titanium, so "cd /mnt/emmc/BACKUP"
- do a "tar cvf Titanium.tar Titanium" which will pack the whole Titanium directory with all files and owner/group/permissions to ONE tar-file.
- copy this file via scp (putty) to you PC. Done!
If you need to restore the Titanium file on the Note
- copy the file back to the right directory
- "cp" to it
- do "tar xvf Titanium.tar"
- and the directory Titanium with all files and permissions is ready to use!
I'm a bit familiar with unix/linux, should have thought about tar !
Thanks again for your help.

[nearSOLVED] Restoring WhatsApp chat history after installing Team Canjica's CM11 ROM

Hi
I've installed [Team Canjica] CM11 ROM yesterday, and it works very well.
However, after installing Whatsapp, Whatsapp displays a message about it being a custom ROM and therefore not fully supported.
It then attempts to restore the chat history and after some lengthy processing, says it couldn't restore the history.
Otherwise Whatsapp works normally and is able to send and receive messages.
I am very interested in restoring my chat history, and unsuccessfully tried the methods suggested on Whatsapp's support website, as well as by their support email.
Can anyone help me, please?

I am not 100% sure, but messages should be somewhere in Whatsapp folder on internal or external SD card. See if you did not delete it. You tried to restore them in the past on some other ROM?

Chat history files are indeed there on my storage on /Whatsapp/databases, and although whatsapp finds them and attempts restoring them, it repeatedly fails to restore them.
I have tried removing and re-installing whatsapp several times, even with older backup files too, unsuccessfully :crying:
Any suggestions?

Not sure. Try to transfer that folder to other storage (on external if it is on internal now). If that does not help try with other ROM and see what happens. I used CM11 and I have restored Whatsapp chats without problem as I remember.

[Partially SOLVED]: WhatsApp+ restored my chat history
Hi all.
I have installed WhatsApp+ (I am not sure but I think it is currently in Hebrew only).
It needs installing from the SD card, and is not available in PLAY store
WhatsApp+ restored my chat history.
Having my chat history "back" I removed WhatsApp+ and installed WhatsApp (original) again, but it again failed in restoring my chat history, so I re-installed WhatsApp+ and will use it for now.
If anyone needs help with the Hebrew on WhatsApp+'s site I will gladly help.
Good Luck!
Maybe there is an option in whatsapp+ to do a backup, and later to do manual restore in org app

You're right, there is - the same as in WhatsApp.
It produced the same failure to restore in WhatsApp, although whatsapp+ successfully restored.
Until I find another option to restore I'll stick with the WhatsApp+ for the time being.
Optionally I may send myself selected chats by mail, like in WhatsApp.
@ArcSer
Just keep Whatsapp+, no?
I use it too from the last year and it's way better than original one.

This thread is old, but my experience maybe can help someone
I had the same problem, because I swapped between LineageOS derivated ROMs for tests (but not on Galaxy S Advance I9070).
I backupped key file from /data/data/com.whatsapp/files and wa.db from /data/data/com.whatsapp/databases.
For the first test, I followed this advices from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/whatsapp-whatsapp-offer-backup-restore-t3342014:
Prerequisites:
1) Whatsapp Viewer (Links are forbidden for new users, you will find it at Github)
2) msgstore.db.cryptX from a backup (the "X" from msgstore.db.cryptX stays for the version of message database encryption)
3) key file from /data/data/com.whatsapp/files from a backup
4) Whatsapp must not have been started before
5) Phone number / SIM of backup and restore phone must be identical
6) Wifi connection for verification process
Procedure:
1) Install Whatsapp, but do not start it
2) Extract msgstore.db from msgstore.db.cryptX with the help of Whatsapp Viewer (the "X" from msgstore.db.cryptX stays for the version of message database encryption)
3) Copy msgstore.db to /storage/emulated/0/Whatsapp/Databases
4) Start Whatsapp and hit "Restore" when it's offered
5) Wait for "Initialisation" to finish. It took about 3 minutes in my case. So be patient.
6) Enter Name and assign a profile picture, hit next
7) Finish!
but nothing. I uninstalled Whatsapp.
For the second test, I installed Whatsapp again, left (only) msgstore.db in /storage/emulated/0/Whatsapp/Databases and copied key and wa.db files into their folders, overwriting the original files. Whatsapp crashed and I uninstalled Whatsapp again.
For a third test, I installed Whatsapp again (all untouched after second test), but maybe the key file automatic overwritten during the app initialization, because now Whatsapp working and it restored successfully chat history!!
After these tests, I think that the only files to leave/overwrite are: wa.db in /data/data/com.whatsapp/databases and maybe decrypted msgstore.db in /storage/emulated/0/Whatsapp/Databases (but I think that also encrypted one should work).
Hy,
Just want to give my impression about using Whatsapp+ or GB Whatsapp or other 3rd party Whatsapp App, dont forget that Whataspp can BAN your number if they find you're using any other program instead of the original APP, it happened to a friend of mine so be careful not to use those fancy things that the original App doesnt have, even more, we all still don't knowhow safe is our data while passing through this 3rd party Apps, they look good and have nice features but it may have a high cost.
