I like the way google approaches this tablet.
But being a 7" tablet that's great for portability, I would think it makes more sense to support cellular data.
I was thinking this would be a great data device when shared data plans come around but I guess not.
I read somewhere that this tablet went from nothing to production in 4 months. For that time period, I'm more than happy with the end result. Getting the licencing and all that stuff for celular would have taken so much longer for them to release. I think this is a better approach as a direct competitor for the Kindle Fire.
Also, every where you go, there is wifi nowadays, who needs cellular data? I would understand on the road, but for those rare occasions, just tether with your phone.
Plus, the bluetooth also helps to make up for the lack of a 3G/LTE/HSPA+ radio. You should be able to tether your phone to the tablet via bluetooth. I beleive that there might be some mifi devices that also use bluetooth. Even if they don't, they all use wifi. It may not be ideal, but it's a working solution for data on the go.
I wouldn't think cell would be a killer- except for Google Now, which they played up, and is way less useful without a persistent data connection!
Google is making nothing from the tablet. I think they deliberately left it out to cut costs to get to that magical sub 200 number.
My life for Aiur
Cellular means they would need to have agreements with providers etc... makes everything complicated and remember all the Verizon issues...

I love that they don't have cellular function because of its low price and that it's out now. Neither would have happened if they added phone functions. If Nexus 7 turned out to be a good tablet, I'm willing to shell out for its upgraded version with phone + 3G and the whole shebang.

They could make a gsm version with no carrier agreements.
Being able to have a data plan of some sort would be pretty nice if out on the road or on public transit but like previously said tethering to your phone is always an option. And once I get Jelly Bean on my Nexus, I wont have to worry about Google Now.

Because that would add $100 to the cost, then everyone would wonder why it was so $$$.

What is a good android phone with 2.2 or better that will allow my nook to connect to the internet. Any carrier it don't matter. Plus I want touch screen thanks in advance.

Any of them with Froyo that hasn't been neutered.... If it has the stock Android Wifi Hotspot functionality, it will work fine as it is an infrastructure connection.
And regardless, making the NC connect adhoc isn't terribly difficult either.
works fine with my HTC Incredible and Droid X on Verizon... Just put these phones into 3G Hotspot mode, and the NC connects to them just like your home router..
NOTE: Verizon charges extra for the mobile hotspot feature. You can add/remove at any time and the charges will be pro-rated (works out to be a $1 or 2 per day, but watch how much data you use as its pro-rated too). You can also HACK these phones (INC requires going into "hidden" service programming menu and making some changes, X requires root, CWM, and flashing a 3rd party ZIP) to get around paying, but use like that violates VZW's TOS, so use at your own risk.
My HTC Aria on AT&T works great as a mobile hotspot in regular infrastructure mode. AT&T just released the 2.2 upgrade, but I've been running 2.3 via CyanogenMod 7 for a couple months. Seamless experience, and the Aria can be found free with a new contract quite often. It's the Anti-Evo since it's probably the smallest Android phone around. It has a 3.2" screen (I think!). It runs at 600mhz, which may seem slow, but on a 320x480 res device, it's actually pretty darn snappy. I have no complaints and I rarely see any complaints about it at all.
No problem whatsoever with Nexus One. Worked perfectly on 1st and all subsequent tries.
I'm planning on trying out the wifi sharing on my new Cliq 2 tomorrow. I will report back.
Works great on my t-mo g2. T-mo alledgedly has a $15 tethering plan, but I haven't been blocked so far.

I use my rooted Samsung Galaxy S. Vibrant from T- Mobile with the custom rom by Master called Axura. The rom is based off Froyo 2.2 and has many of the Galaxy S. international features and is much improved from stock (bias disclosure; I am part of the team). Turning the phone into a wifi hot spot is very easy (not adhock). I "tether" my Nook whenever I am away from wifi easily and reliably. As long as I have cell phone data, I'm good.
I have a had a custom rom on the device for so long I am not familiar with what the stock versions include to date. But it has to be easy and reliable on many other Android devices and set ups too.
Hack if all, I say. lol.
HTC HD2 using Barnacle from marketplace. Works fast and great. Easy!

Worked great on my Atrix. Not the iPhone....sorry apple but I'm already over you.
I've searched for this but found nothing, so I'm sorry if it has already been addressed.
I've wondering how I can tether my iPhone with MyWi to my Note over bluetooth (bluetooth PAN) with a GB ROM. I know that the ICS ROMs have it built in and works great, but I'm just not feeling the responsiveness in ICS that I do in GB. I'm currently running CheckROM V6 with franco kernel. The devices will pair but will not connect. Thanks for any help!
Are you by chance trying to pair with an ipad or another apple device, I remember trying really hard to get my ipad to bluetooth PAN but apple devices refuse to PAN or even connect over bluetooth with a non apple device, which is ridiculous.
** Edit just reread your post it's an iphone trying to pair with the note same deal... stupid apple.

Thanks for the reply! I'm trying to pair with my iPhone 4s. It is jailbroken and I'm using MyWi to share its cell data. I'd like to pair with the Note (that I'm using wifi only). Pairing over wifi sucks the battery more than pairing bluetooth. It works fine if I'm on an ICS ROM, but I haven't found an ICS ROM I liked as much as a GB ROM. I'm going to try the new MIDNOTE 3.0 and see if it is better.

wesside123, thanks for starting this threat. I'm subscribing to it because I'm trying to do the same. BT tethering from iPhone to my Note would seemingly take less power than WiFi tethering.
Even though I'm in a solid 4G area according to AT&T's coverage map, I'm only getting Edge speeds so some kind of tethering is the only way I can use the Note at the office.
I sure hope Verizon offers the Note soon, but since there still hasn't been any FCC filings, I'm not really expecting it to happen soon if at all.

No problem! I've actually seen something that may help us, but I haven't had a chance to try. It is an app on the Android Market called FoxFi. I'm not sure if it works in the direction when need it to, though. It may be from Android to device and not from iPhone to Android.
Could it be the building you work in causing the crappy speeds? I know I'll drop to Edge in certain buildings (or I did when I had AT&T).
Also, the Note will be called the Journal for Verizon. I think it is coming soon...

Will it be possible to purchase the 64GB model from AT&T and transfer it to Sprint? This is a deal breaker for me so if it's not possible then I'll have to get the Galaxy S4... I wish I could get the Xperia Z, but unfortunately Sprint doesn't carry Sony phones

More than likely, not. While the Sprint version is a World Phone and has a Micro SIM slot, AT&T's model doesn't support CDMA. Pretty sure this is right, can someone back this up?

According to what I've read there are a few different SKUs of the ONE. The Sprint version is a "World Phone" but it seems it may only have 900/1800 GSM for European ROaming and not 850/1900 needed for US roaming.
The AT&T version will not have the CDMA basebands enabled so you would have to buy a sprint ONE to use on sprint.
It does suck a little I know, but with all the cloud options now, and you get 25gb of Dropbox with Sense 5, that is the way things will continue to be IMO.
Edit: After a little searching I found that a few reviewers are claiming that the Sprint Version is GSM 850/900/1800/1900 capable but only HSPA14.4 Data.
On s4gru.com they claim the FCC paperwork shows only 900/1800 (European Bands) GSM capable.
Also USB OTG! Something like this may be a good investment if you need lots of storage space (once it comes out). Or any other USB dongle + flash drive.
I know OTG is an option but it defeats the purpose of the "stylish" device. I also don't always have the luxury of having good enough service to stream music and such. My job takes me all over the USA and to some really remote areas.
I wanted to try something different this time around, but it looks like I'll be settling for a GALAXY S 4 since there really isn't any other options. I'd love a Nexus device, but they don't have LTE which is my main means of Internet when I'm home... it's light years faster than anything else around me and, with tethering, it's free.

Yeah, to each his own, in terms of storage. I don't ever see the necessity of having more than 27-ish gb of free space on my phone, since I don't listen to 10,000 mp3s all the time and can keep my high def movies on a flash drive, xfer them over, and then watch them. OTG doesn't defeat the purpose of a stylish device for me, since it won't be plugged in 100% of the time. And even if it was, I'd still prefer the aluminum One to the S4 anyday.
Good luck with your S4.

Galaxy Nexus is a bit dated. I want something with up-to-date hardware.
As for the Aluminum vs Plastic ordeal it makes no difference to me as I'll be putting a case on it. The aluminum, although nice in both feel and looks, is a lot less durable in my opinion. I love my aluminum element case for my S3 so it looks as good, and more protected, those those other aluminum phones.
I'm not set on any particular device just yet so I'm going to keep considering it. I want a phone that will have great development and I'm sure either phone will be developed just as much as the other. All the talk about the lack of devs going to the S4 is just for the Exynos version I believe.
I'm open to more input from you guys as to which phone to choose. I've stayed far away from HTC devices as they've been cumbersome and difficult to root/flash for me when I've attempted to do it for friends and family, but that could just me... I have to admit the process on all my Samsung devices have been extremely easy and that's one of the things I like.

Its just for mesaaging and internet. Plus, 3G Radio drains battery too much. The Wi-Fi is portable. In my place, I've got a PTCL eVo(My internet USB) combined with a portable router, and I carry it in my bag wherever I go, with my phone in hand. It's very fast and portable. I've never felt the need of 3G connection in my life. N7 Wi-Fi version is the best.

Unless you travel a lot with it + you have Data plan at your carrier chances are you won't need it.

Same. If i have a phone with connection already, why would i pay another data plan?
Actually there a hack for it, at least here in Israel, on some operators, you can ask for secondary SIM card, for you number, that will use the DATA plan from your number..I don't know if it's the same for other places..
I have WiFi only simply due to not wanting to pay another monthly fee. Like others, if I need internet on my 7 while away from WiFi I just use bluetooth tether.

The problem is, tether take battery for both devices, 3G is battery monster, add wifi or BT connection, and it will be dead very fast, if you have separate sim for the tablet, you save your phone battery, that is more important, than a tablet, there no such option like, share, same data plan from second sim? I remember do it with iphone and BB, and it worked great
I just use WiFi hotspot on my phone if I need my tablet for something that my DNA can't do. Which isnt much.

I've got the 3G model as i use my nexus 7 on the go and i don't want to tether from my phone because it kills your battery quickly. I spend £5 for 500MB and its enough for me. I have every account i have synchronized on my nexus 7.

I couldn't think of a compelling reason to get the 3G version. My N7 is really for use around the house instead of a laptop. I always have my smartphone on the road, anyway, and it would be unusual to want a second, larger device in tow. If I do, it will be to read an eBook in an airport or someplace and I could always tether in a pinch to download something.
If you're in Russia - you have absolutely no use of Wi-Fi only model, and the only places when you can get a decent connection are mainly some restraunts and fast-food (like McDonalds), or at home.
So, if you are going in a bus and remembered to immediately check on an important email - you better have a fast 3G/4G internet available on your phone to do the thing you wanted or have it to activate AP and share the connection
I think it depends on the costs. I was offered a second SIM from my carrier that will share my main data plan for an extra $2 per month. So I took it. I am not on contract for this and can cancel any time but $2 a month for the extra convenience is pretty good. I am waiting to see if a N7 successor will debut at Google I/O before purchasing a new tablet.
My tablet's not an N7, but when I was shopping for a tablet I really only wanted a 3/4g model. It's just potentially so much more useful; my previous setup was an OV and a 5" Galaxy Player and it was a pain in the ass only being able to do big screen stuff when I had wifi. I ended up with a like new TMobile 7.0+ for two hundred bucks and though the proprietary charger is annoying I don't regret it. The OV was replaced by an S2 and a Note but it was still worth it.
You don't have to have data running every month. I use prepaid and don't always renew it. I'll admit that US carriers tablet plans kinda suck on the lower end. 250/300 mb for fifteen bucks?? Barf. I only like the 3ish gig plans, price-wise. They should also have a soft cap but whatever.
Best option is 32GB version without 3G. 32GB has better flash memory speeds. I had 16GB and now I own 32GB and difference is noticeable

Hey all, I've been looking around at the next phone I want to purchase. I'm torn between getting my Nexus 4 repaired for roughly $140, or picking the Desire 626 up off eBay for about $90-100. Just curious as to what your experiences are with the phone and if you'd recommend it, it's starting to be a tough choice for me since I love HTC's products haha. Thank you ahead of time for any feedback!
I had the moto X first gen for over a year and got a new phone momentarily because the screen cracked. The phone comes very near to zero storage and is a very bad experience compared to my Moto X and I'm assuming your nexus 4. Development is at zero and sometimes the phone is laggy. After digging through files and deleting stock files after updating to the play store versions. I now have space with EVERYONE OF MY FILES STORED ON MY SD CARD and I had to install Chaos Rings 3 using foldermount...now then do I gave a very decent phone experience... So TL;DR I'd repair the nexus 4 or get a different phone. Trust me, I love HTC's interface and this is my first phone from them but above still applies.
Edit: I used to play Chaos Rings 3 on HIGH settings, in order for it to run full speed I must play on low. Just thought I should add that. The processor isn't the fastest or fancy which you might already know.

I think I will just stick with repairing my Nexus 4 then. I do love HTC's UI as well, I like to use my girlfriend's M8 from time to time and I have an old HTC Desire Z that I tinker with here and there. I found some ports of some HTC stuff like the launcher and widgets so I might do that on AOSP. I did take a look at the development forum and it is kind of saddening to see no development which was another reason that I was leaning a bit more towards the Nexus, I'm constantly tinkering and trying out new things with my Moto G and I did for the 2 weeks I had my Nexus when it worked I do appreciate the feedback, I was tired of hearing all the YouTube reviews that the people were all used to high end phones and compared it to them instead of from a budget standpoint, so it's nice to have first-hand user feedback.

I actually think that the HTC 626s is a great phone - for the price... For $80 (after rebate with MetroPCS), you get an excellent 4G LTE phone with a nice screen. The biggest drawback (in my opinion) is the lack of internal storage - and the lack of a development community (so far). Otherwise it's a lot of phone for $80!
If you are the type that installs hundreds of apps - or plays games on your phone, then it's not the right phone for you. If, on the other hand, you normally use a limited number of apps and don't play games, the 626s is hard to beat for the price. Also, with MetroPCS, you can get unlimited data, text and talk for as little as $30/month! The "unlimited" data is only 1GB @ 4G LTE speeds and the rest of the data at lower speeds, but if you need a lot of 4G LTE data, you can increase the amount of 4G LTE data as needed ($40/month for 2GB, etc). Hard to beat the price of the phone and the price of the service.
Just a few years ago, I paid $300 for an HTC Evo 4G (Virgin Mobile rebranded EVO 3D) - and it was MUCH less phone that the HTC 626s. It had such limited internal storage that you NEEDED an SD card just to install anything!

I'm not one to game on my phone a lot at all unless it's something like Alphabear or Dots, which wouldn't be a problem there. I do install a decent bit of apps but I have an 8GB micro sd card laying around for my Nexus 4. I would also be using it on H2O Wireless, since AT&T's network is the best in my area and MetroPCS has no service whatsoever in my area and some of the surrounding ones here in PA, the downside of T-Mobile's network. With that being said, I am probably going to get my Nexus repaired because it's factory unlocked and it's the 16GB model which is plenty for me. That and I already know what to expect from it, the screen alone on it has spoiled me I do appreciate the feedback, thank you
Interesting - I'm in PA as well (about an hour outside of Philly) and the T-Mobile network has been AWESOME for me! I get 4G LTE speeds most of the time - and the phone automatically roams to other networks as needed. Actually been very happy with the service so far. Had Virgin Mobile before this and it was HORRIBLE!
MetroPCS also supports wifi calling too, so anytime I'm connected to wifi, it does the phone calls over wifi , which is pretty nice if you are somewhere where you don't get service.

I'm about an hour east of Grove City, around Clarion. It has a partner network here but someone I knew had it once and it was not the best for our area. AT&T has the best coverage for my particular location, followed by Sprint or else I would actually go to MetroPCS. I was doing a ton of prepaid carrier research the other day for when I get my phone repaired
Hey - I'm familiar with that area! Used to live in Emlenton, PA *many* years ago! It's wild how the different networks are so different in a relatively small area... Virgin Mobile (Sprint) is absolutely horrible around here!

Ah good old Emlenton, I'm very familiar with that town haha. Quick sad note about it, the old Mill burnt down Networks are interesting like that. The whole reason Sprint's network is really good is because of Interstate 80, they almost always have service along it and I have maybe one or two places without service. With AT&T though, the only place I didn't get service was in my house since it's partially underground which is why I'm switching back to it probably next month after my Boost Mobile month runs out. Verizon is just horrendous around here, I keep urging people to switch to a different provider
