After ordering a 16GB Nexus 7 the other night, I've grown worried like many of you about how I'll fit all the data I need on my shiny new tablet.
After some research, I found that the best solution for extending the tablet's storage in the event USB host doesn't work out would be the Kingston Wi-Drive. I'm planning on ordering the 32GB version of this drive tomorrow unless any of you have other suggestions as how to further the limited storage in the Nexus 7.
http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/wireless/
So does this device create its own wifi network, or does it need a separate network to work?
Can u conform that it has a USB host .

The problem is these drives have short battery life (according to the reviews on Amazon), only about 3 or 4 hours.
90 bucks for 32gb is steep (newegg.com) perhaps you just have to consider what you actually need on the tablet, and not just dump whatever you may one day want to watch or listen to.
I am sure the good folks here will figure out a way to get us usb hosting.
Can you browse the internet at the same time? It sounds like this would take the wifi slot..

Don't think so. Sounds like it sets up a wifi network that you connect to just to be able to access the files.

Take a look at the 500gb Seagate Satellite which costs similar to the Kensington Wi-Drive ($168 @ Amazon vs $185 for 64gb Wi-Drive; $83 for 32gb), but stores a ton more -- and it has better battery life (about 6 hours in my experience). The only drawback is that it is physically larger and heavier than the Wi-Drive.
If you buy a Satellite, you should consider installing the hacked firmware:
www.hackseagatesatellite.com. I did and consider it to be worth every penny. I've got >400 movies on mine, with something to please every kid. Every kid can watch his own choice in movies at the same time. I've been very, very pleased.
My solution is to use AirDroid and my computer. I just have to remove things when I'm done with them.

That's a great price... if it sticks over 4 days. It's new (according to the seller), but open box. I don't know this seller, but after buying crap on ebay for about a decade, my experience is that 3 out of 4 times when someone says, "new, never used, open box" means "used, but didn't like it." That being said $80 for a used Satellite is still a good deal, IMHO. Just decide how important a warranty from Seagate is before you buy it.
YMMV
EDIT: I remember buying a "brand new, unused" smartphone that arrived full of the seller's data, including the login information for his real estate company's website. I wonder if he ever figured out why his visitors were being redirected to a porn site for about a week...
The Airstash is popular with iPad owners. It's basically a wifi drive, like the Kingston and Seagate ones, except the Airstash also has an SD card slot, so it's expandable.
One thing about these wifi drives is that, for most of them, when your device is connected to it, your device cannot also be connected to the internet via wifi. There is one wifi drive, I'm not sure if it's the Airstash or another, that "passes through" the internet connection. So, while your device is connected to the device's storage, you also have an internet connection.
There is a newer version of the Airstash that's smaller (about the size of a pack of gum) and a little more expensive ($125 on Amazon for the 8GB and $141 for the 16GB). It might be worth trying to find the older model for a little less.
The hacked firmware on the Seagate Satellite has the ability to serve you files while you're connected to the internet by other means. The stock firmware (unless Seagate has updated the f/w) doesn't allow that (you'r either connect to the Satellite or to internet).

+1.
I asked eye-fi about using the seagate to get files from their wifi card and they said it wouldn't work. Looks like the hack will fix that so eye-fi can send files directly from camera to seagate.
Threads about accessories go in the Accessories section
$35 for the moded software?! Kinda steep.

I looked at the satellite but decided that the wi-drive was more portable and, according to reviews on Anandtech, has better battery life.
I'm sure one of us developers will figure out how to enable USB host for low-powered USB devices very quickly after release if it's not already enabled.

I came to hate this thing, that damn drive took forever to spin up and caused significant lag on the tablet constantly, I regretted not just getting a flash based one. So, this week I got bored and pried it apart. Pulled out the drive, used Gparted to shrink the partition to 120gb, copied that partition to an OCZ Petrol 128gb SSD, took it out of the metal case, and sticky taped that bad boy in. Tablet is amazingly fast now Movies load instantly. I never see that hated drive access indicator anymore. I shall see if the battery life is any better. Putting a mechanical drive in something like this was a terrible idea. I have some pics of the guts of this thing if anyone is interested.
yes upload photos, pictures of the tabled opened too. is hd sata? thank you
It is indeed SATA. Has an extremely easy to pull out of the motherboard cable that caused it to short the old SSD I was going to use. So watch that. Also, the original drive was covered in gold metal tape that was a beast to pull off, I suppose for RF shielding. I forgot to take pictures before I took the drive out. The only negative so far is that I now have that weird screen anomaly, which has GOT to be something pushing against the screen's back, I may have gotten a wire in the way. I will yank it back apart later this week to address that. Didn't have it before. It has TWO big batteries in it as well. In the pictures, the circuit board near the top kind of by itself is the naked SSD in the former drive bay. Motherboard is at the bottom, in one of them, you can see the bigger battery laying outside on my table.
Mega props to you. That's am awesome project. I installed a sad in my notebook and it was the best thing I ever did for performance.

I think that's just a universal issue with the archos g9 tablets.
You just got to re-position your router closer or use 3G dongle.

well, I bought stronger router because of signal, but no change. So I compare my and my colleague Archos G9 80 and samsung mobile and my tablet was about 30-50% worse...
Factory reset I tried
No idea id the non-hdd has it, I only own the Hdd model. Since my case is actually thicker, I imagine it doesn't exist in the non-hdd, and seeing as I. have no micro sd slot. There are physical differences in the models. I was looking at the mobo, as I wanted to upgrade the ram as well, didn't see anything that looked like a SODIMM slot. I imagine its soldered in. I will check again when I crack it to fix the screen issue. I will attempt aome sort of legible walkthrough when I get some time.

It's so much faster in this too. Battery life seems much better so far. Off charger all day, light use, at 75% now. I'm wondering if the HDD model has the 2 batteries to compensate for the extra drain. I found it odd that it has 2 different sized batteries wedged in it.

Physical shape/size doesn't matter, I bet they have the same capacity (connecting batteries with different capacity together would kill them both soon)
way cool reverendbill! (and assuming rather broadly that you are clergy, good luck with holy week!) i am considering purchasing the new 1gb version of the g9 101 250gb and am inspired by your work. i am pretty clever with a screwdriver and an idiot with programming and would really like to know how you get all your data off the old hdd and onto the new ssd. please be as detailed as possible (i'm sure others would love to know as well) pm and email if necessary. thanks in advance for your time and patience!
did you have to do anything special to the new drive? I see you did a partition copy, but is that needed if you don't care about loosing whats on it? Right now, I only have two movies and a few songs on mine because I just got it and haven't done much as far as copying my media to it. Yet...
So I'm just curious if getting a new drive to work is as simple as formatting it correctly and that's it. Guess I'd have to format it under linux so I could do ext4 properly? Or will the archos format it just fine?
I tested battery drop after in 3 different gen 9 archos...one with original, one with a massive 1TB, one with M4 SSD...
No significant battery improvements...Giving it's not scientific test but still.
Every time I measured battery after one how of playing video and always had a drop of around 25% to 27% in both of them..
I also tried a hybride SSD/HDD seagate and same thing.
So please do the SSD replacement for other reasons; quite operation, less, heat, less weight, less failure. As af as speed and power consumption not very much to gain acording to my tests.
The only explanation may well be that since Archos is already pairing Flash to HDD and caching...the HDD is turned off as needed. Ran seveal speed test reading and writing...and did not see much change...I guess it'all just go thru the cache flash used by the HDD versions of Archos.
That was my experience. I reverted back to my 1Tb HDD..No gain for me with an expensive HDD. The hDD is very cheap and if it fails I can still replace it just like that.
Hey guys!

Sure... see above. You'll never find something like a SODIMM slot or similar inside cost sensitive devices like tablets. Please be aware that most of them are not x86 but based on ARM SoC's.
The architecture is basically very different to what you've learned from your PC at home (there's also nothing like a PC-BIOS).

I have G9 80 16GB Turbo. The plastic part of the inner micro USB feeder is broken and sticked out to the USB charger pin. My USB charger cable now blocked by that and cannot be use anymore. Now in the feeder just remain 4 tiny metals without plastic support (4 USB pins connector) and not able to take charge by anyway, bricked because of no battery power. It was just 2 months old and no warranty since I bought it in airport transit.
1. I've checked my Archos and did not find any screw other than single screw in the USB 3G compartment. I really thankful if you can write step-by step dismantle procedure.
2. Can you share the shape of USB type soldered to the PCB to enable me order the part and soldering it alone.
3. Thankyou in advance.
I've seen a lot of ppl complaining about the storage capacity lately on the S4, it is understandable for us to install best looking games which takes up a lot of space and in less than you know it your internal storage will be full, it happened to me once.
I've found a solution to this, since apps cannot be normally store in external sd card well normally your sd card would solve this, but I've found an app called "FolderMount" for free on the play store, what this will do is move and mount the games/apk data from your internal to your external card being able to store many apps/games in the external card while having the internal sd card free of space.
Hopefully this will help some people out there struggling with internal space.
P.s. : This app of course requires root.

I am waiting for the possibility of a sprint 32gb s4 because my upgrade date is June 1. I suppose those of you that already have a s4 would have gotten a 32gb knowing then what you know now? What are your thoughts? Apply this hack or play the wait and see game for a larger capacity s4? I am fairly certain sprint won't carry the 64gb, but I'm hoping they will eventually get the 32. If they don't, then maybe I will wait and see what the note 3 is all about.

Not for $100 more, I wouldn't have. The hacks works well enough for me. The only app I've used it on though is Google Music. The rest of my apps/data etc only come out to 3.44GB of system storage so far, music comes to up 10GB on 16GB (aka 14.83GB) SD card, so for me the 32GB version is not worth the extra cost. Additionally, because I run Linux I've been having a ton of problems with the MTP connectivity even after installing the "Google-made" packages specifically for Android devices. It's easier to transfer items by removing the SD card and inserting it, than trying to connect and transfer items using the MTP connection.

I've got a 64gb sdxc in my e4gt just waiting to be utilized in a s4. I might give it until July or August to see of they ever get the 32's out. It's a given 64's won't come stateside. I'm not saying anyone is wrong but I highly doubt 16 to 32 will be a 100 dollar jump. Maybe, I'm guessing, 50 at the most. Anything over 300 is my limit for upgrade price unless it's a spectacular piece of hardware. Just a wait and see game as usual. I'm afraid the active will be different enough to not be popular enough for the dev scene to have root and recovery, let alone having much of a selection of after market stuff like batteries and cases. I want protection of a case for extended batteries like the e4gt. I hope someone offers a decent tpu case for the bigger battery too. I saw a pic of the battery cover for the big battery for the s4 and it wreaks of crappy quality. Thin and ugly. I also know another alternative could be getting a second OEM battery with external charger. Just swap out when needed. Has anyone determined the hooks on the body and cover are like the s3 in which they need to be snapped together in a certain order, lest it damages the snaps? I never had a s3 but did see the video about how easy it is to damage the cover if installed incorrectly.

There isn't really much available for Chromecast. Google has plugged up root options and hacks with pushed updates (without an easy way to avoid the updates). If you're device has not recieved an update yet, there are ways to root it. Look elsewhere on this forum for more details. But custom development seems stalled since Google has made it almost impossible for anyone to use anything other than the meager selection of approved apps it officially supports. There were some earlier efforts to get around the app whitelist and there was an app (unauthorized) that allowed for streaming of local media (like Plex) but it was squashed by an update.
There has been some press about a possible Plex app and Google has indicated it will expand functionality. The even indicated they want to support streaming local media files but without details it's not clear what that means. Google has stated that when the SDK is finalized there will be more options. No timeline that I know of.
There has also been other press about how it may be important for Google to emphasis the big name subscription services and not alienate those companies by offering much else. We will have to see what happens, but I agree the Roku is, right now, about a million times more desirable in terms of features and functionality. I do have Chromecast to thank for helping me discover just how powerful my Roku is. I had no idea about the Roku's great Plex integration until I started trying to get the Chromecast to do more.
I've bought 4 of them and I'm truly sorry.
The Roku seems to provide the only true alternative for streaming whatever you wish at a fraction of AppleTV.
Chromecast got:
- Root disabled (truly Appleish way)
- Whitelist only apps
YouTube/Netflix/Google's Own Cloud/*Limited Chrome Browser to Chromecast (in terms of quality and functionality).

FTW, yes..but at a price! I still believe a modern Android TV stick and wireless key/trackpad gives the best bang for the buck.
But when you're paying over 100 for these devices, a second hand computer off craigslist for about the same price will do much more.
Ideally you're right but in practice they just don't measure up and any price difference to get an htpc is well worth it for the added features.
I say htpc is the best bang for your buck, it's just not the cheapest

I think we are comparing two different genres of device. Moreover, the SDK is still in development and once that is complete, I am sure this will be the most sought after and out of stock gadget. It is better to stock it right now.
Also, the biggest advantage I am seeing is the freedom of using it from any of our already existing device rather than going and spending additionally on a wireless keyboard or an air mouse.
I am sure there will be lot more activity in store in the coming days given Google's approach in the past.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
Wireless keyboard and air mouse? That's what your phone is for.
It's neat and it's cheap and I use mine once in a while when I travel, but that's it. At home it's useless compared to an htpc.
I think it's biggest use will be in traveling but there are some issues right now, like not being able to log into hotel Wi-Fi because they all use a web based login which isn't supported.
Some day though...we'll see
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't say wireless keyboard and air mouse is a replacement for my phone. You are saved from investing in these if you expect to use your htpc to perform you the internet tasks.
I alao suppose htpc's don't have RAM in those.

The wdtv is great for streaming stuff from a NAS or attached drive, but not as good as a roku for streaming from the web.
I'm a bit disappointed with my chromecast - using a tablet to browse Netflix is neat, but it seems like a one trick pony right now.
I think you guys are being a bit picky and unrealistic....... you're comparing it to 100 dollar devices! This thing only costs 30 bucks. Honestly for the money it costs it works extremely well, it does Hulu Netflx and Youtube all in HD and quite seamlessly and very smooth as well. On top of that it just works right out of the box pretty much. Sure I wish it could be hacked more? But will I say it's a piece of crap because it can't be? No....it's a 35 dollar streaming device that works amazingly well and is incredibly simple to use.

The best think about the MyBook series is they use Twonky which is probably the best DLNA server as far as Transcoding for many devices is concerned.

I would love to see them carry their $100 device through Airport security or carry it around to do a presentation from their Tablet!
Anyone suggesting an HTPC is better is missing the point of Chromecast. Same can be said of those saying get an Android stick.
The Idea is to have a device that you can control from your Tablet or phone and send content to any HDMI TV or Projector without having to carry a bag of Wireless control devices other than what your already going to carry around like your Phone or Tablet!
HTPC are great but not all that Portable, They are meant to be connected to a TV and stay connected. Not moved from TV to TV.
Android sticks are meant to REPLACE your phone or Tablet but requires wireless controller which usually are range restricted. If the Projector is in some projection booth 100 yards away from a stage the Android stick won't work! because the controllers will not work!
Chromecast is something that you can stick in your pocket, plug into a TV connect to the WiFi, and send content to that you can pause and control from a Tablet or Phone using WiFi.
And while it is true it doesn't do much of what it could do yet thats just because it is still brand new!
Screen Mirroring is possible!
It can use just about any app that you might want to use it with provided the App Developer adds support.
And yes it is restricted now but that won't last for long.
Is it like paying to play with Beta? Yeah you can probably say that!
But it does do things that the other devices people keep suggesting can't!
When they can do it and for the low cost of $35 let me know!

Exactly. Different target audiences. HTPCs and Android sticks - those are for the geeky (granted, we are in a geeky forum here) who know computer-type stuff.
Chromecast is targeted at people who know how to use their phone/tablet, but don't necessarily know how to root, telnet, SSH, ADB, DLNA, etc.
Of course that appeals to the geeky folks here, because if it's good enough and cheap enough for the average person to use, then we simply must hack it!

XDA has always been about POTENTIAL...And Making devices do things they don't do out of the Box!
Complaining about what Chromecast doesn't do now is kind of like complaining that your Google Phone doesn't do everything CM does right out of the box!
Thats what XDA is all about!
Awesome for Practically Nothing
I got my Chromecast on day one. With the free 3 months of Netflix, the total cost was something like $6.
For the cost of a sandwich, this thing ****ing rulez.
For me there are two big problems with the Chromecast:
1. The way that Google has locked it down (using an app whitelist, using Google DNS, and moving quickly to block the only rooting method) has greatly restricted its usefulness. Plus it's annoying - there are no cool hacks!
2. The only open-ended way to use it is tab-casting from Chrome, and the "beta" code turns out to do that job so badly that it's not really usable. I don't want to watch stuttering computer video - what is this, 1999?
It may have cost only $11 net for users who got it the first day, before they cancelled the Netflix offer, but that wasn't most of us. It may cost as little as $30 now, but I have 3 other more useful media players that I got on sale for prices ranging from $15 to $40, so that's not necessarily an outstanding price either. If it doesn't do what I want, it's $30 wasted that could have been spent on something else.
Mine was sitting unused in a drawer until last month. I would have given it away for Christmas except I didn't want to dump it on any family or friends and then have to explain why it wasn't very useful.
But it has gotten more useful to me in the last month, since it now works with Plex and I've figured out how to get around some of the limitations. I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I don't consider it money wasted any more. It's just that it's nowhere near as useful as my other media players.
Guess I'm lucky on tab casting... my video doesn't stutter, it just makes my CPU fans run faster.
Maybe this device will be the "Next Big Thing"
AirTame, an indiegogo project now. This is what Chromecast should have been out of the box but DRM always seems to get in the way....

I'm currently considering picking one up for about £120 on offer but I'm concerned over how good (or not) it is.
My current tablet is a Lenovo A2109 which is Tegra 3, 1GB and a 1280x800 TN display and I use it for web browsing, the odd comic/ebook, videos and emulators.
I would be interested in the Nook for CM support (something my Lenovo lacks).
I have the option of either giving this to my parents or keeping this and giving them my lenovo and either way they would only use it for basic web and video.
So what are your opinions on this tablet?
Thank you.
I got one a few days ago having had a Nexus 7 and Surface RT. Compared to those, it's VERY slow and laggy. A bit disappointing in that respect. But I bought it mainly for comics and videos and in that sense, it's better than both of those devices. I prefer the 8.9" screen for comics and the display is superb. Video playback was decent enough, although it stuttered a little playing a 720p video in MX Player.
Not sure about emulators but with it struggling to just run the OS smoothly, I'm not convinced on games/emulators. For £120, I feel it's been a good purchase personally.
By the way, I got mine from eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111223369872?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649), £115 for the 32GB and it actually was new with just the box opened. It still had the covers over the screen etc.
I never had problem nor with stock ROM, neither CM11. Heavy game like GTA San Andreas run without problem. Excellent for web browsing and stuff. You should buy it for this price.
Nor I. I kept stock and just rooted it and put Nova launcher on. It's one of the most stable devices I have owned. You probably won't notice a performance boost over your Tegra 3 device, but the screen is one of the best out there in my opinion. You can't find anything close for the price.
DagsJT- are you sure you aren't in power saver mode?
Sent from behind the wheel of my car at 95 mph.
Thanks, I'll probably pick one up (albeit from retail (sorry don't like open box)).
One other quick question though, I need to decide between the 16GB and 32GB model.
The price difference is £18 for me but that's also the price of a 32GB micro SD card or the difference between a 32GB and 64GB card.
Since I'll be rooting and dealing with roms are there any real downsides to getting the larger internal model e.g. data loss on the internal storage? or downsides to getting a 64GB SDXC card?
Also, is there an alternative way to stream to a TV without buying the HDMI adapter?
One thing that does concern me with this is that there's no local distributor for the already (relatively) expensive HDMI adapter, what alternatives are there?
I heard CM was working on something but don't know what it's like or how it works.

There is an option to stream in CM11 but I assume you need the hardware on the TV side which I don't have. I use the HDMI adapter and it works great no issues with quality and I watch movies from it at least a couple of times a week. I do need to take it out of the case I have as the case prevents connection but that is not the devices issue.
Thank you.
edit:
Just a quick update, I purchased the 32GB model and I'm currently making the stock backup using CWM.
I know we all love this phone, it is awesome. Super Fast, Super intuitive stock android, Super pretty, but lets be honest What's the one issue that Makes you want to get rid of the phone and never look back.
I didn't know how important a microsd card was to me until I used this phone. I used to have my entire music collection on my GS4 and while I still have online access to everything, I really miss not having to use up all my data and really being able to listen to anything anytime anywhere. Also pinning music for offline use through Google music sucks when you have thousands upon thousands of tracks and might forget what you have and haven't saved for offline play.
What's your issue that made you rethink your purchase for a slit second.
I knew there was no sd card going in and embraced it. I think it's easier to keep track of what's on storage and I obviously bought a 32 GB.
No complaints with the phone here. Well except I would have bought a red one.
Oh, ibl
Complaining isn't going to help.

For the average user, most phone companies now are not including an SD card on pretty much all of their phones (except samsung.) With cloud storage and high speed internet available at your finger tips, just stream it all. Google will let you store like 20,000 songs free and stream them. It may be a strain on your data plan, but if you're at home or the office, just use wifi.
The point of the fact is, if 16GB isn't enough, they make you buy the 32GB phone. If that still isn't enough for you, they recommend you use their services and apps to fill in the gap.
For me it's not having USB audio on stock.
Many people have no idea what this means, and even if they did it wouldn't matter to them, but to music quality snobs such as myself, it really irks me.
Especially because iphones have usb audio.
Cyanogen and probably some other roms support usb audio so it is possible to get with this phone
But I really feel this should be on stock android, and on every single phone.

To the OP, may I offer a suggestion:
Use a large portion of your internal storage to store the albums/tracks you listen to w/ the most frequency, and leave the online storage for the remainder. Obviously you can swap between the two whenever you'd like, but seems like it would make the most sense given the fact that you still decided to go w/ a N5.
May not serve your "any track, any time, anywhere" purpose fully, but will save you data and still allow you quick access to a good portion of your media.
I have to say, the limitation on storage does not bother me in the slightest. Sure it would be -nice- to be able to expand the storage, but in this day and age, data is getting cheaper and cheaper, and services that stream media are getting better and easier to use.
Why do we need more storage? how many apps are you truly going to install? how much music do you really need to take with you at all times?
personally, I have a network attached storage, which does owncloud. Through this, and the owncloud app, I stream all of my media to my phone wherever I am.
One could also use a service such as dropbox, or even just listen to online radio streams or even watch netflix for movies.
"The Cloud" is all the rage these days, and it's getting more and more cost effective to use such services. So really, why do we need an SD slot? why do we need additional storage?
I have a 128 GB USB drive attached to my key chain, and a USB otg cable in my wallet all the time... No need for an sd card here... Just wish there was an i r blaster

That'll do it right there.
I was preaching this a year ago when people were bagging in the HTC One and no SDcard slot. LOL
I have the 16 gig and no issue.... well it's because I have Sprint and have decent service in Houston so pulling anything from/to the cloud is a no worries situation for me!!
Get one of these.

Yup, who needs an elegant solution like MicroSD card when we can carry USB drives and OTG cables :good:
your thread name is misleading. love is unconditional, period. if you have conditions to get your love, that isnt love. you dont love your phone. i love my nexus 5, with every perfection and misperfection it has
title edit
I have edited the title because I think I am giving people the wrong impression. The point I was making is that even though somthing is awesome, because we are all individuals and this is a mass market device there are bound to be things about the phone that erk us, maybe its only an issue to you. I didn't intend this to be an sd card complaint thread, Just a chance for everyone to vent their idiosyncrasies.
The nexus 5 is probably the best phone I've used/owned hands down. No regrets whatsoever
I definitely love this phone. I came from the Note 3 and do not miss that phone one bit although it wasn't a bad phone either. I have more than enough gigabytes (32gb) and if I felt that 32gb wasn't enough then I would of stuck with the Note 3 (which has expandable memory) or bought a phone that offered expandable memory.
I do not agree with streaming from the cloud as alternative unless you have a true unlimited 4g/LTE plan. Also I would hate to walk around with USB OTG as an option. OP next time get a phone with expandable memory or hope they make the N6 in a 64gb version.

I hate the headphone jack at the top.
Whatchu talking bout willis!
I have a very large music collection. All of the tracks are in a mySQL database. I made a little bash script that randomly selects about 8gb at a time and copies the tracks to the phone. I am more than satisfied.
