I went to Verizon today to help get my friend get a phone. And the guy (who is actually pretty cool and tech-savy) who helped me get my Droid Bionic happened to be working. As he was setting up my friends phone we were talking about cool things to do with my Bionic. He asked if I had it rooted, and I told him I did. He advised me to unroot it because, "Verizon is sending out 'spikes' and tracks who rooted their phones, will fry your SIM card, and put a flag on your account". I understand that rooting voids your warranty and is a breach to your contract. But is what he said true?
I had a LG G2X and a HTC HD7, both have been rooted and never been "spiked or fried".
Nope. Total BS.

Yes, you will be fine. If you are worried about big red knowing your rooted, in the future try not telling the guy you rooted lol
Phones that have been rooted/modified will generally be refused service(as in troubleshooting) and/or warranty exchange. And generally the account will be notated that the customer has a modified device so that if he tries to go to another store, they will know. If you're smart enough to root it, then you should be smart enough to fix whatever you broke. This is part of the reason why I hate one-clicks.
Or do a damn NAND before you flash/modify something.
That said, you should be aware that some app/service vendors have ways of preventing their things to be installed on a rooted phone. I think both Blockbuster and Netflix have toyed with this, for instance. In those cases, you'll have to wait around for someone to get a fix out.

So if I don't tell them that it's rooted, and they don't see it, will Verizon be able to know through their network? Because I was having trouble sending and receiving text messages a couple days ago and was working with the rep to get it resolved. I'm sure he knew it was rooted. Then he called tech services and they worked on it for about an hour or so. Neither of them mentioned anything about my rooted device or denied me help because of it.
I actually have the netflix app on mine rooted and strapped. No problems here. But its true some apps do know and care for sure.

He actually said that? What a moron. It's great if you don't know anything, but for those of us that do, what the heck is he thinking?
I was @ best buy and found out their phone warranty ($10 month, no deductible) covers rooted phones!!! Couple that with the buy back program which is top notch and I was scratching my head wondering why any of us would ever buy directly from big red or anybody. They also have the "mail in rebates" as immediate rebates.
If you like having the latest and greatest though, especially if you like rooting, best buy is the spot. Makes me wanna talk my buddy out of his upgrade (on my account) just so I can do it there...lol

No there's no way to tell. If you actually told them ' I rooted my phone ' they would quickly tell you that none of their support team can help you, or if you get a nice person they would say that and still continue to try and help you- but they have no obligation to help you with a rooted phone.
Rooting your phone basically means you will not get any support from them (only if they know you rooted it).

I've returned phones without unrooting them and they've never said anything. I do suggest making it look as much like stock as you can (dont return it with custom boot animations or themes). I dont think they look at the returned phones in all that much detail. You obviously don't want it looking all customized because then they don't have to look too hard.

On a side note, the last person you want to listen to is a instore cellphone sales Rep. They know less than anyone. Its industry standard for them to have their workers being clueless.
I've actually been in a store and was able to help other customers better than they could. I won't let them help me with anything other than ringing up my purchase and hope they get that right and not overcharge me (one time on sprint, they messed up my package and I was getting charged for data usage and ran up my phone bill and they shut off the phone days later for running up the bill by using too much data even though it was supposed to be unlimited)

So my phone is pretty ****ed up, and if I can't fix it I am just gonna have to break it physically and take advantage of the insurance I got on this phone.
My question is, since the LG REVO is pretty old now a days, and they don't even sell it at verizon anymore, at least not online or at any of the stores in my area, and the lady I talked to on the phone from verizon said they don't sell em anymore. But what I was wondering and didn't ask her, was if my phone breaks and I claim the insurance for a replacement phone, and since they don't have my phone anymore, what will they do? Will they go backwards and give me a ****tier phone or will they be cool and give me the next step up. Either way I assume it will be a refurbished phone but I was just curious what kind of phone they might give me.
Any thoughts?
Sent from my VS910 4G using xda app-developers app
If your phone is messed up and your still under contract they may still send you a replacement at no cost to you... So call them first to try to warranty it out instead of paying for the insurance replacement.... But that's my thoughts on it.... Either way they probably going to send you another Revo
Sent from my Broken Out 2.1 VS910 4G powered by Mt using xda app-developers app
Yeah, most likely it'll be a refurb Revo, though you might be able to say, "look, I had trouble with it before it physically broke, can I get something else?" And they might say yes. Some have gotten Razrs that way,one got a Droid 4, someone even got a Gnex. More likely they'll offer something like a Spectrum. I'd be stunned if they tried to give you something inferior to the Revo.
"Inferior to a Revo"? You mean like a 5" chunk of 2x4 with icons and buttons drawn on it with a Sharpie?
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using xda premium
In all seriousness, while my time with the revo wasn't bad, it'd be hard for them to come up with an inferior replacement now that phones have come so far. I mean they'd have to go back to something that doesn't have 4g for one thing...not gonna happen.

That made my day. I'm counting the minutes until I can get a new phone.
Ok so about 3 weeks ago my son busted my fiances s4 screen. There was a big hoot and hollar about why do we let our son play with our expensive phone in that thread lol. So anyway assurion did not have the phone in stock so i sold her broken one on ebay and bought her another from the sprint store. I called assurion and canceled the claim and even recieved a comformation.
Well fiance gos out to bring my dog in the house and she sees a package from fedex on the hood of her car. She opens it and its a brand new galaxy s4. She calls me and tells me. So i say no big deal ill mail this back to assurion. Well i call them and tell them what happened. They get all my info and cant find anything in there system saying they shipped me a phone. They show a canceled claim thats it. I give her the fedex number showing it came from there address but she refuses to check it. She ask am i sure i didnt order one off the internet and i tell her id be pretty sure if i just bought a $600 phone.
So i then turn my attention to fedex. I call them and say hey you left a package with a $650 phone in it on the hood of my car in my driveway about 100ft away from my house. They call the driver and he says he didnt wana come to my house bc my dog was on a runner. So i give them some crap about leaving it there and that was that.
So now i have a phone sitting in my house that assurion has no information on. It required a signature but was never signed for. Has anyone ever had an experience like this?

If it showed up, you do not have to pay for it. You might want to do research, but I HAD HEARD SECOND HAND that back in the 70s, companies used to ship stuff to people, then ask them to pay for it if they didn't return it (think CD "clubs").
I learned this after I had a 2nd poweramp shipped to me . . . and I finally reluctantly returned it . . . THEN learned about the rule/law about not having to send stuff back. RESEARCH IT

Doesn't matter if you have a phone to send back or not, they left it without signing, it's all cool in school, keep it. Just leave it boxed up for a week or two. When (and if) they call for it looking for it, play dumb, then ignore their calls.
And again research the law behind mailing you stuff.

My advice, since you've already taken the 'correct' steps to resolve this issue, is to keep the phone, still sealed up in the Fed-Ex box. Wait a billing cycle (or two) to see if any charges show up, or if Assurion contacts you again about the damaged device, and then take the appropriate action. If, after a few months, nothing further has been done/attempted by Sprint/Assurion, then I'd consider myself the owner of a new S4.

had a similar incident back on tmo with the g2, it is currently sitting on my desk
also as teh father of a 2 year old, i happily let her play with phones (not my sgs4 though, she gets mommy's sgs3 ). there is so many learning apps and she is already so quick to learn how to navigate teh device. i wouldnt take that away from her for the world. screw everyone else and you raise your kids how you see fit

I'd research the laws, keep it in the box for a week of case they call, then I'd own it, root it then I'd call FedEx, and ask why the hell they left it on my car. And tell them you don't appreciate that very much.

To those of you saying to just keep the phone.....correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a replacement come pre-activated, meaning that it can only be used on the phone number that it was meant to be a replacement for? If so, it's still of no use unless to be sold as a bad ESN to be activated on another carrier such as Boost or similar.

So I'm having issues with dead zones on my screen, and I brought it to Verizon but they basically said they would send it into the factory, open it up, and if they find it's my fault (not sure how they would tell...) i have to pay $500, non refundable. So instead of dealing with Evil Red, I decided to go to LG's website. I see they do offer a repair service, and my phone is still under warranty, so they say they will do it, but I am just wondering if this issue will be covered by warranty. I haven't had any drops or falls with the phone, and I have been extremely careful, with little to no damage at all to the phone. I really don't want to chance $500 with Verizon, so this LG repair could be a lifesaver. If anyone's had any experience with LG service, let me know, thanks.
Unless the phone has water damage, I doubt Verizon is gonna charge you a dime. You're the second person who's posted that comment. I took mine in cause I have black lines on it, the guy took one look at it, ordered me a replacement no questions asked and no threat of a $500 charge.
The guy said the same thing to me when I took mine in because I was getting static during calls. I think it's just protocol.

Here is the thing... If Sprint had the files it would probably get leaked as there would be much more people who have access to the files. This makes hunting down who leaked it more difficult. Also, all those techs might not be heart broken if they lose their job. We have to rely on someone from LG leaking it which is much more unlikely.
Well we just got access to the att kdz from a repair center in nam, it might be possible.

I would call sprint to see what they say. talk to someone above the initial person who answers the phone if you don't get what you want.
you are paying a monthly fee for insurance protection. you should not have to send it to LG.
I'd probably demand some credit as well for dealing with a company that won't honor their insurance program despite you paying monthly for it.

I doubt you can do much over the phone. They will end up telling you to take it to a store.
I'd try another sprint store. Make sure it's a corporate store preferably a repair center (which are rare these days).

right the person on the phone can't swap your phone.. but a supervisor can put notes on the account and/or call the store to make sure next time he goes he won't deal with the same issue.
As a sprint repair tech, the note will only work for a corporate store. Any sprint store can order replacements though.
If your rooted, and it obvious than it would void your lg warranty which technically voids a TEP. Now that being said, if your device is still working fine and just won't update cause you rooted it, I'm not surprised he won't replace it. I wouldn't personally either...
My advice if you can't get care to add notes or get another tech/store to Ae it would be brick it. Flash a root file from another device or something. They'd pretty much have to replace it then.
