strange hosts file in custom rom

i had overcome 1.4.2 rom and when i checked /etc/hosts file i saw many sites was pointed to localhost. now i am on stock rom and hosts file is clean. on custom rom i had common apps not sth weird.
why is it like that in custom rom ? is it a security feature or a security hole?

Those are primarily anti-spam and anti-ad corking.
Sites that are used to host ads and spam are aliased to localhost, so that they do not unsolicited incur network traffic (that is probably EXPENSIVE).
ok thank you

where to download modems

hi all
sorry if i'm duplicating threads.. i found a link to an app that gives access to an ftp site where tons of modems and other stuff can be downloaded... something like "tergy's android download" or something. But cant find it anywhere now.
Help?
Never heard of it. SamFirmware has all the stock roms available in odinable tars and you can get most of the modems there

No permission for external link, but...
4shared.com
/dir/dQKy-5TE/
SGSModems.html
Recompose link
There is a good selection of modems in the ROM kitchen, as well as in perka's file stash.

Yeah, it's probably Perka's file stash youre looking for. Just search Perka in Market. Good luck!

All Rom developers -- cwm free Rom hosting

Why do none of you use this service? The capivate community is one of the only groups that don't use this service. just think this would help you get your Roms out also it would help us the users have an easy outlet to updates and new roms. Thanks for your input and replies.

Newest is v3.0.27, it'll auto upgrade if you don't have it, but it can be done manually pretty easily. Just search for the .apk
Thank you very much for the quick answer!
Sorry but what does.apk mean ? I am new on this site
Best regards

An .apk file extension denotes an Android Package (APK) file. This file format, a variant of the JAR format, is used for distributing and installing bundled components onto the Android operating system (from wiki)
If you google "3.0.27 apk" and select the apktop.com site, you can download it using the QR code.
Thanks to Rusty! Just installed and it seems better than my old Market!
Thank you a lot !
So that means that i can't install it from the android market?
Best regards
