hey everyone,
my touchpad has android cm7 i believe and when i booted into webos, i was greeted by a software update notifcation, which i downloaded and installed not knowing it was gonna brick my device. now im trying to sell this thing and i have a buyer lined up.
so what do i got to do to get this bad boy up and running again? would it be easier to return to complete stock from here or get the dual boot up again?
i can only get the "usb" symbol up on the screen, nothing else. ive tried running webos dr but it refuses to connect to my tp (as soon as i plug usb in, tp tells me to conncect to ac adapter and disconnects me from the webos dr program)
i've jailbroken all my devices and installed roms many times via developers awesome simple programs/instructions but im afraid if it comes down to retyping 50 lines of code, im gonna be assed out lol.
so hopefully there is an moderately painless way you guys can point me in.
thanks alot.

You're going to have to doctor. Before you try, connect the tp to the charger and let it charge completely, it won't let you dr unless it's charged, it's a good safety measure. Don't worry, you haven't bricked it - tp's are almost impossible to brick, it's only a pia to get it doctored and running. There are several good step-by-step instructions on doctoring. Go here and search: http://forums.webosnation.com/
I would install android again, it's nice to have a dual-booting tablet!

ok, i am hopelessly stuck. I ran the unlocker and after I click the last button to start the process, it says it cannot read a file. Anyways, I check to see if it worked by chance, and it does say security unlocked. But every time I try to flash a rom from the computer it starts and gets to the point where my phone goes to the color bar screen and says usb at the bottom, then it tells me that it cannot communicate with my phone???HELP
Edit: Really Guys??? I have posted twice here, I have been in the android forums for a long time and I can get a response to anything there in 5 min., I thought this was part of our community but I guess I was wrong.

I haven't had this problem, but is the driver installed for when it is in the bootloader screen?
Another way you could try is flashing it from bootloader mode. Just go into bootloader mode then plug it into your comp and run the romupdate utility.
Odd
Never personally ran into it but check your USB cable. Try a different cable. Try a different USB port. I had some issues with them being a little touchy.
I dont know if anyone cares, but I figured it out. I am using a Early 2010 Model MacBook Dual Core running Parallels instead of dual-booting Win XP.
When I am in Windows XP, OSX is running in the background, when the rom update utility turns the phone off then on into the bootloader, the phone is off for that split second and parallels cant keep up with it, and the Mac trys to grab the USB connection in that split second before Win XP says "No, thats my connection", so in that split second exchange the connection with Windows and the RUU gets droped! Kind of simple once you know whats happening. No matter, I used my brother in-laws Vista Toshiba( infected with viruses to the max), it worked fine and I am now running Moonscapes 1.6 with android as well! Thank You to the people who took the time to help!! Remember guys this is a community, it doesnt work unless people respond, without participation we may as well be talking to our dogs!
You never mentioned you were doing something crazy like trying to flash your phone from a virtual machine. That never works, because the usb passthrough driver doesn't detect the windows low-level bootloader mode. How are we supposed to help you when you don't provide details?
Lol, my bad, I got sloppy!! My son dumped a Sonic drink on my dell so all I could work with was my trusty Mac, I am going to dual boot it later today. I have to say after a day with Moonscapezx's 1.6, I like WM, dont know if I like it enough to swap it out for good, I still love my Hero(at least for another 3 months when I get an upgrade, EVO!!!). Ok, well Thank You again guys, I love XDA, you guys are great
Think i may have bricked my tab... FAIL.
Verizon Tab. Running stock OS. Was rooted
Bought the Bootstrap recovery so i could do a nandroid backup. I kept failing the VZW update, so i figured do a backup, then remove bootstrap and reflash things to get it right. However...It doesn't work like the Droid X or 2 bootstrap. So that i wasn't prepared for. It automatically ran the backup fine, but on the reboot it just went nowhere and was stuck in a boot loop.
I tried vol up + power, did nothing. Did Vol down + power and got to Downloading screeen. :O Didn't have time to **** with it then, i was getting an oil change and honestly thought it would have just given me the option to run a backup...not run a backup and flash and all the other stuff it did.
Finally get time today to tweak it. It won't even turn on to downloading screen. Can't even get it to bootloop. I plugged it it in the wall and the battery symbol shows, but...it has the spinning "thinking" logo showing, though it never spins and i cannot see how much charge is on it.
I downloaded Hemidall or however you spell it, and the stock verizon tab files. It won't even see the device when i plug it into the laptop. Yes i have the drivers installed. I have hooked up my tab to my laptop MANY times. Running Windows 7 64 bit. Also have Ubuntu if needed. Also downloaded and installed that Visual C++ thing that needed to be downloaded with it.
Any ideas of what to do other then use it as a paper weight? I know i can send it back to Samsung, but i don't think the wife would appreciate me bricking my tablet like that. LOL Somehow i cannot see her taking that as a good thing.
Should i just leave it plugged in for a few hours and hope it starts showing a status update? Been 45 min now, showing nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
edit: OK been a bit longer, took it off, can get it to get stuck at Samsung loading screen again. XD Just didn't try download screen yet cause i want to make sure it is FULLY charged. Only crappy thing is that it still won't show battery status while it is charging, just the thinking symbol. Hope i don't fry the battery then
edit again: Still can't be recognized by Heimdall. CRAP. Anyone know the Vendor ID, Product ID and Interface ID to use to install the proper drivers through zdag??
edit again: hooked up while in download mode, was able to install drivers. Did clean install and rebooted. All fine now. WOOT
I know nothing of Bricking/Unbricking... Rooting or anything. I have been researching for 3 days now. I know as much now as I did then all of zip!! I cannot get past the on screen. I have done the 20 second poewr button push for up to 5 minutes. I have talked to Amazon support and have been told Im pretty much SOL. I miss my kinde and I am not ready to give up. I have seen others have appreared to be in worse situations with this issue than I am so I am hoping for some assistance.
Every time I look into KFU and understand it it doesnt download right. Almost everything says it cant work on my computer. I have downloaded several versions. I feel screwed. Is there hope for this? all the apps for unbricking and rooting that i have downloaded have been for nothing. I would really appreciate some mojo and super geek help please.

First try and put it into recovery by holding down the volume up until a screen comes up saying to reboot or restore. Also, give me some background info. on how the kindle stopped working.
Is a definite must do. I have an appt I have to leave for in a minute so as soon as I get home I will def take care of the background info and the volume up try. Thank you. I will most assuredly appreciate your help. :highfive:

Hi again... SO I did the volume up trick until my fingers started to shake. Nothing happened. I did it with the kindle attached to the computer and with out the usb tethered to anything. I did not try it straight off the wall plug tho. Nothing ....
Background. I have had the kindle less than a year. My 8 year old has been stealing it a lot the past few months trying it say is hers ;0 thats ok. Shes been playing games like bakery story Dragon story fashion world and temple run etc... she uses it for the calculator and reading programs. She also uses it for netflix. 5 days ago she watched netflix until the battery gave out. She plugged it in and waited a few minutes and it wasnt coming back in. She told me about it... I looked into everything I could think of. I tried everything I could find. I have downloaded (to my computer) a ton of root and unbricking programs. Nothing makes sense and everything says theres parameters missing. I called kindle. Support took me thru every step I had already tried (power button charging different ways killin the battery all the way doing different things etc) The only two things I see now are a huge battery in the middle of a black screen that has a very small red portion to it or the beginning screen that stays put with the words having the glowy part run across it over and over again... thats all I know for sure. IF theres any information you can help me with I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

You might need to get a factory cable. I have to get one because mine won't start up anymore either.
Hi lisa
First off Don't Panic!!! Been where you are about 2 months ago and couldn't/hadn't flashed/used from etc etc before in my life.. but my kfhd was stuffed but the sounds of things similar to you.
The volume up trick will only work once you have 2nd boot working btw.
Go to the 7' android development section of the kfhd forum and read a few threads around getting something called second boot loader.. it actually really simple and very simple to do (as long as you do follow it EXACTLY).. I did get a factory cable to assist this process, and you may need one as well, but I have read that several people have now worked out how to do it without. (Read all the thread about second boot loader there's a lot but its worth it) factory cables are only cheap at worst case..
I'm sure someone will direct you to exactly the link on the xda forum you need shortly, everyone was amazing when I initially stuffed up.keep smiling and as I said don't panic!!

Does your Kindle take a charge at all do you know or just always the same screens no matter how long you charge?
3 in one
1st querant Do you buy them on amazon? can i get one closer to home? Is there a price range I should look into?
2nd querant Ill look but be warned that my inner geek has had meltdowns over all of this. Its over my head. I just kinda bug eye and try not to get stupefied.
3rd querant No it will not charge at all.
Thank you all and please be patient with me.
I don`t know if the charging has the same issue as the first gen, it required a running system in order for the battery to charge if it ever became flat. Here`s my suggestion plug it to your pc for several hours set your computer to not sleep and leave it, if you get lucky it will eventually boot good luck. It should not need unbricking by the way.

If you have not done anything to the device to cause this ie: root, custom recovery, flashed anything, then it sounds like you just have a hardware problem. Something went wrong that should not have and would be covered under warranty. I WOULD NOT mess with anything involving root or a factory cable or 2nd bootloader. If you do not know what you are doing when it comes to those things then you could potentially do more harm than good. Did you buy it on amazon? You said you already called amazon, call them back, they will replace it, even if you didnt buy directly from them.. Sometimes the people that answer the phones for amazon are idiots. Just call until you get someone who is helpful. tell them exactly what happened, it died and won't come back on. Don't mention anything about root, factory cable, ect.. These devices havent even been out for a year so all of them are still under warranty unless you've root or installed custom recovery.
Could just be a defective charger ? did you try an alternative mains/usb wall charger, left plugged in with the kindle powered off ? it takes a long time to charge them from flat, mine was approx 12 hours Edit - A computors usb output isn't usually enough to push a charge in only keep the kindle "as is" when in use

wouldnt matter if I could root or unbrick it. My computer wont download the system operations for those properly. I did mention that I dont know how. and I did say that I dont understand what they are so I am not doing them. That I had tried the 20 second power button push all thw way up to 5 minutes on the usb to the computer and the wall as well as detached. Nothing worked. Its stuck and they wouldnt explain why. All I got was well sorry thats it we cant help you. *sigh* I have tried calling like 5 times. to no avail. Thanks tho.
I will be the first to say that unless I can figure something out I am not going to try it. My tablet is something I find as a MUST HAVE and I dont want to take any chances on ....

Its possible because my son was using mine and his to charge his reg KF and it wasnt charging. He tried several alternates power choices on that as well. I have ordered the factory charger but I am going to want to understand everything about it before it gets here on sat. I am going to start researching it tonight when i get home.

Try testing the charge on a couple different power cords that are know to work and put it on one for 12hrs. Then if it couldn't charge I'll walk you through the steps of using a factory cable.
What kind of computer do you have. These things always work smother on a Windows machine (or Linux). Also did you ever install the drivers for your Kindle on the computer. Nothing will work properly unless you have the drivers on there. They should load automatically when you plug your kindle into the computer. If they don't, here is a thread where you can download the drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890413 Just download and you can either unzip the file and use what's inside or just double click to install :good:

I dont mean to discourage and maybe it will work but the only thing a factory cable is used for is to put the device into fastboot so you can flash partition imgs or other programming features(the cable uses the fifth lead on a micro usb cable to activate fastboot). Even if it goes to fastboot your kindle is not bricked and and you would have no reason or need for fastboot. From what you've said you have not rooted or modified your device at all, there are only two possibilities of what is wrong with it at this point- the charger is bad or the charging port has gone bad. That box with the red bar about a 1/4 full just means the device doesnt have enough charge to power up. It happens all the time on mine and once I charge it for a couple minutes its fine. So your device is obviously not charging and I dont think a factory cable is going to change that. I just want you to have the right info and not go wasting your time and money trying things that are irrelevant to what is actually wrong with your device.
trying
have cable, still lost. Am trying to figure out what I need. Things wont load on the computer. I have a samsung RV515 laptop. I cant get the computer to recognize the muffed kindle. The fastboot screen does show up but then goes no further. It does need to show up on the computer so I can do more things with it. Not so much atm. I have the recommended linked .exe on the computer but it will not run as it says not everything is downloaded and I have to finish d/l it manually. I am not ready to give up but I wont do anything to screw it up more.
No it wont go past the 1/4th charge. I have left it on the charge for 24 hours and not getting further. Again I have seen people not even able to get to the front screen pull it back from the dead. So Im hoping.. thanks
You mean the exe that I linked you to doesn't work?
from my Viped out one x
Alrighty, folks. I've searched the far reaches of the internet, gone through hundreds of pages on this forum alone, and I think I may just have a different set of issues than most.
The symptoms: Long-time thought-to-be-bricked TouchPad with partition for WebOS and Android... Jelly Bean? I think? so long ago... ended up not being bricked, but rather in need of the factory original charging cylinder for proper power flow. When I got it back in somewhat working order, it, PROBLEM 1, got stuck on the Android loading screen (where the word "Android" gets repeatedly swept across with shininess - remember, this is OLD) and never budged from there. I've restarted it who knows how many times by holding down the power and home buttons. I can scroll through the menu with the volume keys, can load WebOS perfectly fine, can launch Android, but it just stays on the loading screen.
Obvious choice is to wipe the whole deal and start fresh. No worries. Except I wanted to get some design sketches off of it, and, PROBLEM 2, my computer was no longer recognizing it as an external drive, or anything, really. I've looked at darn near every "computer won't recognize TouchPad" thread I could find over the past 14 hours. Finally found one with the driver software that could have been my missing link, and my computer won't accept it as a driver. This is a whole other can of worms for someone who has the patience. I will admit that the one fix I haven't tried for this is using a factory original cable. That cable was awful and it broke on me a long time ago. I will try another cable tomorrow, though, as I'm traveling and only have one on me now.
I managed to get my pictures etc off of the TouchPad by booting WebOS and putting it into USB drive mode there (which my computer magically reconizes ). However, I still can't access files in the standard recovery mode to actually do any wiping/software things. I'm well aware that the solution is to go to The Three Dots and switch that developer slider so that my computer knows what's what, but sadly I can't get to the settings menu. There must be another way.
I discovered just a bit ago that I can boot into ClockworkMod; however, I'm not really sure what to do once I'm in there. I can do a factory reset, yes? Would that help?
TL;DR
TouchPad which cannot connect to computer will load everything but Android.
WHAT I'VE TRIED: booting partially through WebOS with WebOS Doctor running and then trying to pick up the connection with TPToolkit when the Dr recognizes the WebOS side of things, new drivers, sacrificing a goat and doing a ceremonial dance around it, etc.
GOALS: Get TouchPad recognized as a USB drive, using ClockworkMod, which is apparently the only thing I have going for me.
Any and all help gratefully accepted. Thank you all in advance!
So I was running an older version of Remix OS on my mini. I decided I wanted 2.0.626 so I downloaded it. Being rooted I could not get the OTA version.
I was able to flash it via Jides instructions by simply putting it on a flash drive and hitting F2 and using update via USB. Root remained by the way. It worked fine. I ran it for a while I noticed my aps2sd pro was acting funny. So I decided to reset to default settings and start fresh. Well there is where the fun started. I did this right before going to bed and let it run uninterrupted. When I woke up in the morning I turned everything on and was looking at a black screen. No problem unplug it and it will finish the wipe and away I go, WRONG! It started up and got to the Welcome screen then froze. Waiting for 20 minutes or so, I unplugged it to restart as it seemed to work before, alas this time no joy. It never fully updated so I never would see a boot screen or F2 or anything. My HDMI would flash static and black that was all.
Well now I have a brick! I do some research and find out the button on the mini is a FEL switch. It may come in handy if I can't hack it the short route. So having time to kill why not hook up the JTAG and see what is what.
Now my cheap Amazon JTAG that I rooted with won't hook up to my computer anymore, code 10. Search the net and find I must use the Windows 8 Prolific UART drivers. Install them and wallah it works. Hook up JTAG and see gibberish so it makes me think not a complete brick.
Maybe I could somehow flash the 2.0.626 update like installing root. So I followed the steps here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/remix/remix-mini/how-to-root-remix-mini-t3388437) but simply modify the data to use the update package instead of the root package. Now my JTAG is acting funky in and out. So hmm why not solder pins to make a good connection?
OK done. Low and behold a solid coolterm window and data, perfect. I run my modified script and it seems to run the update OK but I am not hooked into TV to test and it was getting late. I looked on Amazon and they had mini for $39.99 and next day delivery so maybe I could pull an image off that if my hack didn't work.
Next AM hook up the mini and woohoo it works!!!!! While setting it up Amazon delivers new unit too. So now I have two. Just posted this as shout out big THANKS to all who gave all the information on root and updating via flash drives in the first place. And to let others know it may not be a brick when you think it is.
