[Q] Why ICS on i9000? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really dont understand why everyone loves ICS on the galaxy s so much. I am using it now, but im getting quite a few problems. Its pretty unstable, and compared to GB its pretty slow in terms of CPU and animations. I would like to go back to gingerbread, but on ICS the Play Store is so fast, and the whole OS looks nice, what gingerbread rom do you guys this is fast and stable? I guess I can tweak the rest..
Thanls

Check out DarkyROM v11 Black Edition, a CM9 based slick ICS rom. Very fast, stable and smooth! You will never want to go back to GB!!

ICS is smoother than GB !
The animation is maybe due to the Launcher, what's yours ?
What's your ROM ?

If you have time, try different ICS roms and kernel and choose the best rom for your sgs

I'm using CM9 and its awesome. super smooth and fast. way better than my experience on GB.

ICS? Haven't seen any better for my i9000!

use debil kernel and cm9..

Use Slim ICS v 4.0 or 4.1 (stock kernel) its the most stable ROM i've ever seen.
-> 500h Uptime and no random reboots
-> 2 days battery life with normal usage (sms, telephone, internet/rss)
-> btw. my Battery is 2 years OLD
-> really really really smooth
-> you should only change this ugly stock launcher to your favourite launcher (i prefere Apex Launcher for example :good
;D
greetings
Ehomer

I use cm9 with devil kernel and I get a day of battery with a 2 year old battery. It is EASILY 4x faster than gingerbread. I almost ripped out my hair for the first 6hours I had the phone I get no random reboots or anything, its super stable

Use a different ROM ...I use Remics-ux...Stable,fast,smooth. Try it and you get the answer

Clean AOKP 1.1.6 on my SGS. There is no troubling issue since then. The stock froyo DDJP2 was a big pain in the neck. The main advantage of all ICS builds is its open source so the build size is mostly 80mb to 150mb thereby saving precious size on the phone. The more stock elements and libs in the rom and more ram usage and more lags. ICS may have slow scrolling on some roms/devices but overall its absolutely a try. There is nothing much in a heavy overloaded Samsung bloatware where we don't have so much apps use in daily usage. ROMControl is a very important feature incorporated in ICS roms. LCD density is a superb option for those who prefer 160 to 192 dpi. IME switcher is also good for using custom keyboards. As an example I used a Desire HD till last week and the ICS Icecoldsandwich rom was flawless till the last touch. ICS looks plain vanilla, but it increases the user satisfaction and the true value of hardware is felt. Overall the battery lasts more on ICS builds if not too overclocked. In short, ICS is a platform for all those who were fed-up with the low performing cpu/ram/hardware/software related stock junkware of any phone.

or you could try "tiramislim" itś based on slim ics, but imho its better no bugs, much smoother then gb.
anyway, i think you tried not the right rom. there are so many ics-roms out there, most are quite stable. try different roms, or read the threads of the roms before, then you can see how others think about them

Definitely cm9. :3

Best Overall Rom

Hey so I was curious as to which rom is overall best on the I9000, in terms of a combination of newness, ram space(speed) and stability, cause I understand that the newer the update, the less the ram? I am currently using JVR
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
i have found the best experince on these roms
Hybrid rom
Cyanognmod 7.1
insanity
amestris
i have to go with cyanogenmod 7.1 or hybrid
super fast
Although i have not tried any recent roms on XDA. I found Tornado JVT to be the fastest and most stable. Although i personally don't think the quadrant score really makes a difference i get a max of 4100
currently im running the Teamhacksamsung ICS port, but the most satisfying ROMS have been the ones out of Darky's kitchen...!

I found them to be the slowest.
The ota is a nice feature though.
Im quite happy with my current combo: jw1+semaphore+thunderbolt (on ext4)
The fastest rom is cm7 but the ram managent is bad so you would have to install thunderbolt to make it fast the whole time instead of the first hour(s).
Cm7 has not so good battery life, but if youre fine with charging twice a day its the one to choose

For sure MintBerry MIUI if it should be MIUI.
Jetpack ROM 8.0 if it should be a Samsung ROM.
But waiting for MIUI 4.0 port no I´m not using the Galnet version...

Just stay at JVR or upgrade it to a newer official ROM.
Only in this case u'll get phone with a full set of working features, especially camera and hardware accelerated video playback.
Yeah, official ROMs are maybe not as smooth and don't have such comfortable UI, but at least it works as supposed without any big issues.
i9000 is my 2nd device, first was Spica, so i used to use lots of different roms and my experience says that there's no ROMs better then official one.
I'm using Mintberry MIUI with the Thunderbolt script and I'm finding it to be pretty smooth. CM7 is also very competent in performance.
However, the thing with these AOSP ROMS is that they lack the Samsung framework so video playback, camera, etc don't run as smoothly.
I've always found stock ROMs to be the best overall ROM as long as you flash a kernel like Semaphore or Tornado, I just like to use Mintberry MIUI because its aesthetics suit me better than stock

[Q] The Best ROM for me

Hi all. I've got a SGS (I9000).
I need same advice: what Is the best ROM for me?
I usually use my smartphone to:
- send SMS;
- surf on internet (like Facebook);
- call samebody.
The battery life is VERY IMPORTANT!
Thanks ^^
Try aopk rom 2.02 beta ICS
sent from my ice creamed super sgs
Well i've been testing out lots and lots of roms and seems that ICS is the ones that saves battery the most and they run much smoother too. And stock browser runs much smoother on ics too... So i think ics is the way.. I'm just not sure what of them draws less battery life tough.
I'm using ICSSGS RC4.2 and with heavy use the battery seems to last pretty ok and that rom is almost perfect with almost everything working. Actually i think its the best ics rom today, tomorrow could be another rom But yeah it all depends what you use and like for your phone and for me its that one atm.
I've tried many many roms and all ICS-rom don't have good battery life.
My favorites:
- Amestris-roms
- SauRom
- JW1 with Tornado-kernel
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I agree, depending on what your looking for would determine the best rom for you. the best bet is just trying them and seeing which you like the best, truthfully a lot of the rom are hard to notice performance differences and many perform alike. If you are looking for the best battery life i would personally be looking back at some 2.2 and 2.3.x based roms. they have had the most time invested in them so far, and have not been completely ported.
a good webpage to check out roms is done by @AlChemistar at android candy and then find the device.
personally i have only experimented with 2.3.x based roms and ICS
for gingerbread i would recommend:
DarkysRom (10.2 Extreme)
Fl GS2
MIUI
For ICS:
TeamHacksung
OneCosmic
drZMIUIV4 beta 8.1
for a full list got to android candy. this is just what i prefer, and for making calls, texting and web browsing ICS is nicer but the interface for texting does lack. you may want tot check out theme available to take the white background back to the Samsung black for AMOLED screens.
yeah, i suggest the 2.3.x roms for battery life. they are way more matured than ICS per now.
i just installed ICSSGS RC4.2, and battery life is not good, ( i need to test different kernel).

From your post it sounds like we have similar phone useage. So far i've found team icssgs with semaphore 0.8.1 to have great lag free experience with good battery life. Fairly light useage as I use my tablet for most internet & games (wifi, 3g on only if i need it with several calls, sms's, some xda, facebook& g+) and i made just under 4 days down 10% battery or there about.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
I think I also have the same usage (phone, text, and web), and I'm a bit disappointed with ICSSGS RC4.2 with semaphore kernel. But I have data always connected (and synchro on), and when I use my phone intensively for about one hour, I loose about 30% of battery life. I'm still looking for a rom with data always enabled, that I can use intensively for 2 hours per day, without charging it during the day.. If you know a rom like that (like galaxy nexus do, but for SGS), please let me know !!

What's Your Favorite ROM, and Why?

Just wondering... what's your current favorite ROM for your Nexy, and why?
I used CM7 for most of my time owning my N1. Have it almost 2.5 years now. Very enjoyable experience.
Currently using MIUI GB 2.3.30, with Go Launcher and Neok kernel. I find it very stable and offers everything I need. I also enjoy the smoother experience GB offers for our device over ICS.
I also frequently try BCM ICS CM9, but always find myself reverting to MIUI as I miss working video camera and flash. Although gap is closing fast; flash now working, and video has just arrived.
Keeping a close eye on Sense 4 ROM too
What gets your vote?
PS hats off to all the rom cookers/developers for making the N1 so much fun to own

Which component of ICS that you are holding out for? I have been using ICS on a daily basis.
CM7 patched with PDroid and some solution to place apps in an dedicated partition on the SD card.
I'm currently working with both CyanogenMod7.2.0RC2 and BCMRC3.4Update1 .. I love having ICS working, but to be honest CM7 is better (i.e. more consistent and more stable) if this is your only phone.
I keep on messin' around and just assuming that one day I'll brick the device. That's OK though, a perfect opportunity to ditch AT&T once my GSM device is dead.
Anyway... here is question for you folks going back and forth between GB and ICS roms. Have you found a common internal partition size setup so you can simply nandroid restore back and forth? Or are you using BlackRose to resize each time?
i dont have a favor rom coz every 1 have some thing and not contained with other
now i'm using cm 7.2 its cool and the battery life is good
but the most thing i hate is call program (i dont know the true name) mean when someone call me his pic appear small and all that stile is ugly and cannot sync his facebook account with his name and pic
the sense roms give me a great call program and appear FB account ,....
but drain battery more and i think the camera quality is not good with all sense rom
so
1st - cm7.2
2nd - hyper supernova
ics waiting 4 stable
miui i dont like it
I usually stick with ICS layout when reverting back to CM7 or MIUI.
Now I'm back on BCM ICS

I love all the ics (BCM,Texasice, and Aokp) roms each have their own customization, very fast, and quite stable most of the time. I also like some of the gingerbread roms like cm7 and miui, they are very fast and have amazing battery life. Im not a big sense guy , but with sense 4.0 in dev i will prob give it a go . In the end the rom choice is up to the user.
m so happy
Ok I been using this phone for two years or so
I loved it and had my blue days
I have struggled with a2sd and etc
However I was always unhappy with not having the sense look
And now I am using this hyper sense nova Rom and I am in love with it
I get close to ten hours battery with light to moderate usage
I have a battery caluberation problem but once I solve it ill probably not switch
I am more interested in features than looking so I prefer CM 7.2
I'm running BCM myself (4.0U1 at the moment) but I keep a backup of CM7.2.0 in case anything goes bad.
I'd like to test MIUI someday but AFAIK greek language which I need is not supported, at least for ICS-based roms.

Which rom is fast & has no LAGS!!!

Hi everyone i've just got myself HOX but my girlfrend still has SGS over 3yrs now .My question is which rom has no lags and is good enough for daily use.I flashed for her C-rom and it's laggy as hell.
I tried couple others rom all of them are jelly beans i don't remember names of roms but most of them are laggy i repeat laggy that i can't do basic things.
So maybe jelly bean is to heavy what i mean by that is You know just a single core ,512mb of rams maybe that's not enough ,i don't know i'm not a dev i just wish to have a decent rom without lags.
Could someone suggest which rom has no lags 'cuz i'm a little bit tired of searching for it.
I don't need JB might be ICS but i wish to have a normal working phone without lags .
U hope that someone can point something for me ,anyways thanx in advance and have a good one bye bye.
First of all, I hope you're not comparing performance to your hox...
That said, there will be certain microlags, and opening certain apps might take a second, no matter which rom you choose. CM10 roms are among the most stable jb roms, there's loads of variations and re-themes of it here. No offense to anyone, but a huge amount of jb roms here are re compiled CM10 or Aokp with themes and bloatware. Aokp ics roms are the equivalent regarding ics, in my opinion.
My tip would be first to find out if gb, ics or jb is best for your girlfriend, read up on it. Which features does she need, what ui does she prefer?
Then start fresh, find some of the guides here in xda, flash gb in Odin and repartition and start from there to flash your rom of choice.
Sent from horseback.
I found cm10 to be laggy (fresh install with only nova launcher and a few google apps). CM9 is not laggy at all for me.
I'd suggest sticking to ics if performance is your main concern.

I know this might not the right place to say this, but why is everyone so keen on (unofficial) firmware and then expecting wonders? No one needs Android 4.0.x or 4.1.x on an SGS right now.
If you just want a stable, fast and almost lag-free running SGS then you should install one of the better 2.3.6 StockROMs (JVU or JW4(a little less stable but more memory)), add an optimized kernel like semaphore (stock color, not big mem version) and maybe even change the filesystem to ext4.
At least for now forget the 4.x hype, be a man, have balls and laugh at others thinking you being "uncool".
A SGS configured this way without garbage apps could run precisely like a swiss watch.

Hi
i tested gb 2.3.6 jw1 (is the best gb rom), ics cm9 and jb mackay rom. In my opinion jb is the best rom.
In GB all runs slowly, but stabil. It looks lame and old. but some people like it. I hated the performance with wlan and internet. Slower then this isnt possible. Any ICS and JB Rom is faster in this point.
CM9 runs very nice, but some games need hours to start, dont know why. I think some internet validation things needs to long. Ok after some hours my phones needed a restart, but this takes only about 3 min, then you can go on.
Mackay is super smooth, some games work even better then with cm9. Only Wlan is in this weak. But the rest is awesome. So i prefer to JB!
On all roms i had about 200 apps installed mostly games and used link2sd with a partition on my external sd. So it was always slower then a pure rom.

That's exactly the difference. I also have about 150 apps installed - but almost _no_ games, furthermore nothing moved to SD! And with XXJVU - IMHO the most stable so far - I was not counting in hours but had no restart / FC in 2-3 months.
Everybody has to make his/her own decision - my SGS is no gameboy for me, I use it for daily life and it has to run smoothly and without problems. If your phone hangs unnoticed and you couldn't get an important call then it's a lame excuse that the phone could have been rebootet within a minute when in fact it's dead until noticed by pure luck.
I'm therefore even tempted to move from actual SauROM JW8 back to JW4 or my beloved JVU ... but of course stability is not only a matter of the OS but - as Android unfortunately isn't able to catch all faults / errors - of app updates as well.
Yeah You right about GB , i remember like maybe year or two ago when "darkyrom" crue uploaded their gb roms every single day and SGS was so fast.
Now all JB roms are lagy for me and i'm going to flash old good Ginger Bread and i want to see a difference.
If there is any difference.
Anyway thanx a lot for answers i've learned something and good night every1.
I'm running cm9 with devil kernal. Its awesome.
The only reason why I don't use gb now is because and this is lame but with cm9 I can video record with my front camera....which my daughter loves....well we both do lol.

I give vote for GB too. I tried lots of ICS and JB roms, and all happen to have some bugs, not very important bugs, but some that annoys me. I always used them for few days at most then got back on GB.
At the moment I am on JW4 GB, with Semaphore 2.7.4, and all seems to work nice, Well of course there is lag here and there, but i am on smartass gouverner and i didnt overclock CPU, its on stock 1GHz. So maybe with performance gouverner and overclocked CPU, it wouldnt have lags at all.
Also I really love GB because of stock camera app, stock music player, and sliding thing for calling and messaging. If you need some more information, be free to ask
It will still lag if you OC and choose any other governer....even with lagfix (ext4) conversion.
Not that bad tho.
I just flashed back to gb jw4 with semaphore 2.7.4.....to play with it again.
Anyone know if you can use the filesystem of cm9 on gb? May be a stupid question but its just a thought.

6th and 7th months,JB user(cm10/slim bean/elite's gnexus)
Now (since like 1,5 months ) I'm completely GB fan...
Even i can't believe this but ... Yes GB looks better in my opinion...
You know some people ask which is the best rom in Q section and everyone's answer is the same,"it depends how you're using)
GB is my style from now on...
In ics/JB there is something is missing that i really dont know what"s that....
Note:I'm on XXJVT with no root access (stock kernel) for about a month... And i'm veeeery happy with it ..

just install SLIMBEAN from XDA its awesome... I'm using this from last 2 months and really no problem at all.. its smooth fast and stable..
and once you get use to it you will never go back to any other rom even your stock..because apps open very quickly and its to compact also only 70 mb... and one more thing battery life is almost same..as stock ROM
I am on the latest CM10 nightly with the JB semaphore kernel, no overclock, bigmem enabled, and I have honestly found it to be the best most responsive ROM I have used on the phone to date.
Previous to that I was using the stable release of CM9 with semaphore, and while it wasn't perfect in terms of lag, it was rock solid stable and reliable. I would use this for your girlfriend if I was you (as I am assuming she isn't as tech savvy as yourself, so best to stay away from nightlies). I'm sure she won't even notice a little bit of lag. And the usability of ICS compared to GB is, in my opinion, dramatically better. Just uninstall all the development apps before giving it to her.
All roms can be a second slower than some, that's just expected. I recommend just getting her something up to date and clock it up to 1104 Mega Hurts if the screen doesn't freeze on it if you do.

Using X-Bean 3.0 + Semaphore 2.5.0s on a daily base. Running smooth & stable here. LiveOc 120, big mem 404mb, ondemand ui, rasd 1024, sio/noop. Not had a single reboot, lag etc whatsoever

Daily Use Rom without any extras

Hey guys, i know many of those threads came here in the past time but i have a question.
I want to give my i9000 to my mother. I need a stable rom which doesnt need to update daily or weekly. I know from many roms that they run VERY fluid in the first few days but barely a week later they begin to lag, stuck, etc.
My mother wants to make calls, maybe whatsapp, facebook, etc.
In addition to that my little brother will pick the phone up and want to play some games likes jetpack joyride or something.
The Rom mustnt be 4.2.2 because i know that many 4.2.2 roms are getting laggy after some time of usage. even slim bean which i used a lot and love it.
anyone any suggestions?
thank you!
why don't u use the stock 2.3.6 rom ? it's ok..plenty of features, god battery life and enough new apps that can run on it. At least you know it's stable and bug-free. After using slimbeam for a few months i went back to stock...it's better for me because i want a stable rom, fast, vith little customization. Slim it's ok but i had some bug's and if u are on a trip or u need to use the gps to go somewhere u don't whant to get force close or other things.

Agreed, stock, or a debloated/optimised stock is the best option. I tend to go back to stock because its rock stable, without losing on too many things.
Especially considering GPS and battery life, stock does incredibly well.

My father uses a easily Rom 10.1 Cyano
I find it easiest of custom Samsung
sauron or stock

okay thanks guys so the majority sticks for gingerbread. i'll stick to the stock rom since my mother never had a smartphone till now and will be surprised positively anyway
@bialabs. CM10.1 is nice but i think the batterylife is very poor on every cm rom since the gingerbread roms. i dont know why but on the i9000 it uses a lot of battery for some reason.
maybe we can leave this thread open for some other user experiences for people who want to live without bunch of extras and customizations
Great question OP. Just giving my mother an old SGS from a friend which runs CM nightlies. Wanted to find a simple, stable rom for her, as she doesnt have a smartphone. Came on xda to find one. Thanks for the replies.
Try Sexynogenmod 2.5 It's rock stable(don't bother with any changes to governor or OC) battery life ,in my case, is similar to stock, gps working fine and very smooth. It's odd that it's based on cyanogenmod 10, maan it's so much different(better). I personally recommend it, and i flash ROMs since 2010

My experience
I am using Supernexus 2 M1. It is almost Stock for Samsung Galaxy S I9000. It working really good. Stable, good speed, etc...
Slimbean 6 i use and no big problem.
All great suggestions. But i finally decided on a gingerbread, because i believe it is more intuitive for a beginner. Stock was a bit laggy, so now i use Saurom ROM 2.3.6 (JWB) with Menu addon pack + Semphore 2.7.4 kernel. Everything is great and have no issues so far.
I use JB 4.2.2 - CM10.1 + Sempahore, all working great..
Nice stable ROM... try it
