Ubuntu has come a LONG way and is now very good. However there is nothing like windows in terms of development. I use both ubuntu 12.04 and windows 7 professional. Ubuntu is obviously free and awesome but here's a list of things I couldn't do in ubuntu that I could in windows:
1. Overclock my laptop's 5650m gpu.
2. Cannot use turbo on my latpop's intel cpu. I spent about 2 hours trying to get it working but never found a solution. Not a huge deal but definitely wish I could use it as I paid for it.
As far as I can tell, that is about it. Ubuntu also only uses about 1.5GB of ram, is wickedly fast and stable and of course supremely customizable. If you are going for development the OS doesn't matter much, your compiler and emulator does. I'm somewhat certain ubuntu is faster than windows when tweaked, but you have to pretty much be an expert on how to tweak it. If you have a fast machine (say a quadcore with 8GB of ram) I doubt there is any performance difference between the two OSes. Its unlikely you will be compiling millions of lines of code for an android app, after all.
I am going to use eclipse I have another doubt: windows 8 dev preview or Ubuntu 12.04?

Easy installation of programs - Windows. When it comes to development though, you'll need Ubuntu. You'll also need to read up and learn a lot of commands (command line is where most of the compiling, installing, etc. takes place on Ubuntu during development).

Points 1&2 are done through a kernel tweak; many of the folks on Ubuntu forums are not experienced enough to provide kernel tweaking tips. Get some help at kernel.org
I run Lubuntu on all my systems; from a 8 yr old Toshiba laptop w/1gb of RAM to my 24 core with 96gb of RAM. Lubuntu runs fast even on 250mb RAM systems with a Pentium CPU.

I've always preferred Android over other OS's, but this just shows the diversity of the platform. We have versions of iOS (miui on other devices) & Windows phone7 running on Android. How many iPhones or windows7 phones can mimic android OS successfully?

The look of stock Android isn't that great, it's what you can do to customize the look that I like. The WP7 UI just looks terrible. I can't even say this looks like a good idea. I guess I can say it's cool for those that actually like the WP7 UI.

Personally I find wp7 really functional, but to each his own. Hopefully the dev adds some twists and doesn't just replicate wp7.

Yes, thanks, I know that. It's ugly is what I am saying
I also use Metro UI and I think it's the best Windows Phone 7 Launcher out. The guy is always updating it too. It's pretty smooth. I'm not a huge fan of Windows Phone 7 but it's nice to have a different feel sometimes. I switch between stock launcher, adw ex, and metro UI. Why not?
Is there anyway to install windows 8 on the nexus 7? I dont know much about kernels(i dont work with linux enough) and drivers and the sort. (im trying to get into building roms but i have no idea where to start, other than the android kitchen, but that didnt teach me much except for some vocab.) but is there any possible way?

It could be possible because the Microsoft tablet uses the tegra 3, same does the n7 so the drivers could be ported easily. Bit would be a difficult task.

It'd be highly illegal from that standpoint.
Even if someone somehow did it, that person would probably receive a C&D from Microsoft real quick.
I don't see how it would be illegal, unless screwing with the drivers are illegal. I mean you can run windows in a virtual computer or on a mac. So wouldn't it be the same in that sense?

It's illegal cuz you need a license for it and they most likely aren't selling licenses for the RT version to consumers.

Yea, the only plausable way would be a sort of virtualbox app, I don't think there is one or is even possible to make it for x86 emulation.

You can't run x86 on ARM. Windows 8 rt for ARM is a big Windows phone that you can't run any x86 programs on.
Just RDP into your existing Win machine, you can do everything this way. I utilize a Wake on LAN app to wake up my computer and control it with an RDP app.

I don't think you are going to see much in the way of compatible programs in the sense you can't load software you currently own. The ARM version won't run x86 based software. So you'll have to repurchase programs.
Also, as others mentioned, it would be illegal since they do not sell licenses to end users for Windows ARM versions and those are licensed directly to OEMs so you would, at best, need to pirate it somehow. Then there are the driver issues. Just because a Windows tablet and and Android tablet have the same CPU/GPU doesn't mean they have the same storage controllers, etc...so there is another headache. You may as well just buy a Windows RT tablet if that is the route you want to go.
i think the memory itself is not enough except if you have SD card
It would be better to install Ubuntu 12.04 since it is Linux, like someone stated, once in windows, always in windows. I'm pretty sure you need some kind of secureboot bootloader to install windows 8 anyway. You also need to think about the licencing issues, of course they're not going to let you install their software on any old device. Is it even worth the hassle? I'd say no. Ubuntu on the other hand is a good option.
Why bother? Me personally, I hate windows and use android to escape it.
Okay, now I have had this computer for about 2 weeks now. I have a GeForce 430 inside and I'm starting to get pissed. Recently I've added 3 new fans, 2 120 mm fans on the top running at around 2,000 RPM and one on the side case (now sitting directly under my gpu) which is a 80 mm running at 2,700 RPM. I have PLENTY of air running through this thing I take off the case and its like being by an air conditioner its so damn cool, But since I've added the fans, by GPU is showing very weird temperatures. Now let me tell you my normal temperatures. Since I have installed the new fans my cpu is running at about 80-90 degrees f. My ram is running at about 73. But whenever I play Diablo 3, the GPU shows readings of, listen to this, 209.3 degrees, and the thing about it is, before you open Diablo, its running at about 47 degrees CELSIUS, when you open Diablo it instantly jumps to 70, and then 80, then 90, then slowly makes it's way to 100, and randomly from 90-100 the BIOS takes over and shuts down the GPU from reading such high levels of heat, which bluescreens me, but this last time, I opened my case, and when the GPU started showing temperatures of 93 Celsius. I stuck my hand under it's heatsink, just to feel relativity cold air blowing out. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

I'll take a wild guess either the factory thermal compound is really bad or it doesn't have at all cause its a low their card so it can't produce that much heat.
Another would be that the fans wouldn't be spinning adequetly like you look at them and they are spinning but without force
If possible download MSI after burner and set up a custom fan profile see if it helps tho I'm still wander how can it get so hot because I had a 6970 which uses a lot of power and voltage and it never went up more than 75C even right now I'm using a over clock 6850 and its has a very high OC and never gets past 68C

That's the thing though. I don't think its truly getting that hot. Because it has a 20°C increase the moment you open diablo. I literally do not think that is possible.

iOS was ok while people were transitioning to smartphones.
But, now that everyone's grandparents can rock a smartphone its useless unless you have a hard on for Apple stuff. Even jail broken you can't do as much with a brand new iPhone as you can with even an antiquated Android phone.

There is no generator for the "we need a new idea" meme.
Gentlemen, we need a new idea for the new iPhone
inovate
5 rows
I'm disappointed by the lack of innovation with the new iPhone and iOS 6. I've always kept an eye on the iPhone, and has pretty much always been in my shortlist of phones simply because it is easy to use and so integrated. Sure it may have lacked features that were available on android and lacked customisation, but customisation isn't regular Joe Bloggs cup of tea.
As far as I can tell, it isn't enough of an upgrade to be considered a 5, more like a 4GS. huge disappointment, guess Samsung, HTC and windows 8 phones can breathe a sigh or relief that this incantation of the iPhone is utter wÄnK in comparison to the competition.
Has there been any benchmarks for the new A6 chip?

Nope, but Anandtech says it may be an A15.

Since Android 4.4 KitKat can run on only 512 MB of ram, would it be able to run smoothly on our raspi's?

doubt it..... no hw acceleration plus slow cpu.

HW acceleration is not a requirement, also the CPU isn't that slow, it will OC to 900-950 pretty easily. Not saying it wouldn't be difficult but I think it might be possible.
it running or being usable?

Well it running and being usable is always the real question. What's the lowest hardware it able to run on verses being usable for something... I'd be curious to see it attempted at least.
I was wondering this too and checked on the raspberry pi forum, the problem mostly seems to be that the hardware is proprietary to Broadcom and they would have to write drivers for the low level hardware stuff and get graphics working smoothly. But don't take my word for it, I'm very new to all this Check the link (hoping I'm allowed to post it) http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=60395&p=451826
Also, once upon a time (a year ago) someone was working on a 4.0 build for the raspberry pi but it seems the project has died or is very low-priority because there's been no news in over a year But anyway, I think there should be a 4.0 build somewhere on the internet. Then there was also that 2.3 build which was working correctly but too slow to actually be usable

yeah doubt it, even if you could it would be a very unpleasant experience, especially if your use to the speed of kitkat.
The only reason I'd be happy about it is netflix. For all other purposes Linux > Android
Netflix's problem is they chose silverlight for browser based streaming. Which as you know is not available for linux.
I don't think KitKat will run fast in raspberry pi

It's plenty available for linux. There is Moonlight, a silverlight plugin, but it doesn't support DRM. The reason netflix uses silverlight is for DRM, pure and simple.

I'm gonna try playing around with this tonight.
Actually. Kitkat should run fine on the pi. Hardware specs are at minimum. But still acceptable

You need more than "minimum specs" to succesfully fun Android on a device. Drivers, kernels..
