[Q] SMS cyrillic issues with Nostalgia 6.2 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I searched nigh and low and could not find an answer to my minor, but annoying issue.
I've recently upgraded to Nostalgia 6.2 ICS 4.0.4 ROM and everything works great.
The only thing I cannot resolve is that fact that not all SMS in Cyrillic go out in the proper way.
I can send messages in Russia to myself and they all come back fine and proper, but when I send same messages to others they get garbled i.e. message in Russian Тест get's received as " 5 A B
Once in a while I can get a message through, but could not figure out what makes ti work. And it's only one that look normal and everyone after that gets screwed.
Things I've tried so far:
- Different messaging apps - Go SMS Pro, Handcent, Android 4.0.3.8
- Different keyboards - Swype, Android
- Different kernels - Devil3_0.79_cappy_CFS_BLN_VC_20120618; Semaphore_ICS_1.2.5sc
- Different mms.apk
So far no luck.
My current setup:
SGH-I897
Android: 4.0.4
Baseband: I9000UGKG3
Kernel: 3.0.17-Semaphore_ICS_1.2.5sc
Build: Nostalgia 6.2
Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Right. Try different SMS clients and different keyboards.
Also on both ends of receiving and sending SMS should be Android phone.
And there is a possibility that mobile provider setup might be preventing from sending Cyrillic.

Well, I did tried different clients and keyboards - still get the same result.
Do you have any suggestions for the client/keyboard combination that should work?
Also, I had no problems sending Cyrillic SMS from my phone when I had GB installed (Captivate, ATT, Cognition 5.2). Receiving side that I did the testing with was Galaxy S II on T-mobile. I also tried sending Cyrillic from my son's Nexus S running ICS 4.0.3 stock and it worked every time.
Somewhat lost here and looking for options to try.
Thanks!

Try Swype keyboard, it is included in GB stock, so should be working.
As for MMS - there are couple of free apps like HandCent and others, see reviews, see if Cyrillic supported. Also seek help in Russian Android forums.

I narrowed down my problem to be a carrier issue. Tried with T-mobile SIM card and everything works just fine.
With ATT SIM card I get some SMS in Russian to go through while some get garbled.
Next step would be to talk to ATT to find out why unicode messages do not work with them.
Thank you!

[Q] Timestap after flashing rom

I'm having an issue where the timestamp on my msgs are now incorrect after flashing to a new rom. I was told that htis happened if I am outside the USA (I am from canada on rogers), but this never happened before to me from flashing to a AT&T rom.
Is there an actual fix to it?
If i flash to a different rom will my timestamp be fixed?
how about if flash stock, will it fix the issue?
I had the same problem. I can't figure it out either, but I found a work around.
I downloaded Handcent SMS from the market. set it up the way Ilike it, and disabled the notifications from the default SMS app.
I now have correct time stamps, and the sms has different skins to look like HTC, IPhone etc.

Thanks but i was looking for an actual fix rather than a work around. Do u know if it will go back to normal if i flashed another rom?

SMS Delivery Notification.

This isn't a much used feature so I doubt many people catch it, but maybe someone will have an answer. I like using the Delivery Confirmation for SMS that android has built into the Messaging app. Now the problem: When I have it set to request a notification, in the stock messaging app, it always says "pending" whereas in GoSMS it behaves correctly and either confirms/denys. I know I could just use Go, but I would prefer the stock app work correctly. I am on the most current ICS ROM by Koush, but there has been this issue as far as I can remember, on stock ROM's, CM7, and even on the Galaxy S's. Any ideas?

Forgive me if I have misunderstood but this is how delivery reports work on stock 2.3.6:
It says pending after the message has been sent but not received, and then shows a received icon (and says received if you check the report) once it has been received by the recipient.
Isn't this happening on your device?

That is how it should work, correct. The stock messaging app never shows anything other than pending, where as GOsms tells me (on the same text message) that it has been received. I am also sure that it is received when go says it is, because people reply.
Well I'd wipe the data for the stock sms app and go from there.
Probably rom specific but I guess it could be to do with your carrier...

It can't be my carrier, because go works. It also can't be my ROM, because it has been persistent across ROMs and devices. I have done many full wipes in the past week, thus clearing all messaging data, and it has not fixed the issue.

Well I don't know much about sms protocols but if it has happened across multiple devices (assuming you stayed on the same carrier) it could be possible that your carriers delivery reports have a compatibility issue with the stock app but not with go sms.
I am of course just hypothesising .

[Q] Increase SMS Character Limit

I am currently using Holics-0.8 ROM with faux123's Vivid ICS(v007) kernel and for some reason my SMS character limit is now down to 80. Anything past 80 characters is automatically converted to MMS. I was previously using an AOSP ROM and I did not have this problem.
My Vivid is unlocked and I am using it with T-Mobile. I understand I may download a third-party messaging app but would prefer not to as I like the stock messaging application.
Does anyone know if there is a file I can edit to adjust this or should I just change to a different ROM? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re-flash with at&t build.prop. if you notice problems with Bluetooth or WiFi, there are updates available on page 55 or so in the holics thread.

Are you talking about the 160 character limit? I don't know that there's a "fix" for the stock messaging client. Not all phones can handle messages over 160, so you could run into issues dealing with other phones/networks.
You could try another SMS client. Pansi is awesome for GB, and has a toggle for the 160 character limit. It's my favorite messaging app and fully themeable. GoSMS was also nice, but I don't recall the ability to toggle the 160 limit.

The stock messaging application works well, and I use it on occasion (actually, I've trimmed things down and use it as my primary right now). It just splits large messages into parts. Some carriers can't or won't deal with large messages.
Pansi is really nice. I'd use it with adfree; the older version of Pansi was a no-ad option, but they've recently changed. It's still an awesome app.

[Q] Cant send unicode characters to iPhone?

Hi,
So I'm having a lot of trouble trying to configure a solution to this problem! When I text my girlfriend who is French, her iPhone can't receive accented characters, it instead replaces them with other characters. I presume this is a problem with the Unicode settings on my phone but can't find much information on this topic anywhere! I have a Samsung galaxy s i9000 international triband, baseband I900XXJVT running cm10.1.3 (android 4.2.2). I live in.new Zealand and I'm with 2degrees as my provider, have recently switched from skinny due to band issues. Any help would be much apprecjated ! Thanks!!
Hi There,
dont know if i can really help.
i'm also on 2degrees, were the messages working correctly on skinny?
have you tried texting the same message to another Iphone? or another phone?
and/or texed from another phone to her Iphone?

Yes, I have tried many different phones. I'm sure its not the network now, so more looking at trying to see how i can change the settings on my phone, but there seems to be nothing? Can it be that the version of ROM i'm running is the problem and I need to change ROM's?

If you have tried different phones i'd say the likelihood of it being a ROM issue drops through the floor.
Unless by complete coincidence all the other phones you used were running the same ROM (or had the exactly the same settings).
Also if everything worked on skinny that would make me lean toward it being a carrier issue.
I did a quick Google and came up with this article from Apple, sounds very similar to what you have.
*** I cant post a link yet
uummm ... go to apple, then support that search "SMS messages may display incorrectly on other devices"
the article should come up at the top of the list.
hope that helps.

Thanks for your help on this! I think you may be correct with the ROM theory, I will just have to change my rom and find out!

no problem,
its the small things that are the biggest the bum.
*oh (light bulb moment) have you tried sending a MMS instead of a text? or using whatsapp or similar?
could be a short term work around.
best of luck.
@nippynz it will work with Hangouts or Gmail, Yahoo etc.
It is BTW Apple's speciality to break purposely the compatibility between their products and Android or PC. Not even JPEG or MP3 file data transfer with Bluetooth will work between Android and iPhone. Apple sucks!
