Everyone is saying that the Nexus 7 is a bargain but I don't see it as being so clear cut.
( Not trying to troll ... or start an IOS vs Android thread... but I am just genuinely on the fence as to where to spend the proceeds of my HTC flyer sale ).
It all comes down to preference..
Do you want a bigger heavier form factor but with a larger screen? Then get the iPad.
Do you want something smaller and lighter? The get the Nexus 7.
Do you want to mess around with it such as rooting, custom ROMS? Nexus 7.
Do you want (even need?) a better FFC or a rear camera? iPad.
The nexus 7 comes in a bargain for it's a fully featured tablet with a base price of 200$ (or 250$ in this case) that is going to be supported throughout it's life by Google (latest updates, great development scene).
So the real question is, if you're to get a tablet.. what are you going to be using it for? What would you like to do with it? what would you like it to be able to do? GPS in car? custom ROMs? Jailbreak for custom Apps? Apple's great App selections? Play Stores app selections?

Personally for MY personal use. I'd go with the nexus 7 just because I love messing with gadgets and the Nexus 7 is easier to toy with. I'm planning on using it as an eReader and I always import my books in .epub format. To me, it's easier to drag epubs from computer to device (HATE iTunes). I also want to install emulators and play old games on it as well as the new games found in the App store. When the time comes I'll probably have Ubuntu inside as well so I can dual boot Android/Ubuntu or some distro just to have that computer on the go. I also like trying out developer ROMs and kernels that add more functionality usually like USB OTG. Just some ideas as what you want to do.

Here in the states the 16 GB Nexus 7 is $249.99 while a 16 GB iPad 2 is $529 (without shipping costs, and sales taxes). So, that is a price difference of $279.01. I can buy two 16 GB Nexus 7s for the price of one iPad 2.
Now, if you were to buy an iPad 2 over an iPad 3 you're only saving $70... now that's a no brainier.

Also, according to gsmarena, a lower res screen with 132ppi compared to 216.

Bigger screen but lower resolution & considering Apple have aren't releasing iOS 6 for the original iPad, I wouldn't bet on the iPad 2 being supported in iOS 7, whereas the nexus 7 is going to keep getting updates.
Also bear in mind that although it's close to £210 on Google play at other retailers such as PC World do free delivery so it's only £199. It's only £10 but it makes a difference.
N7 is intended for content consumption, whereas the the app store for the iPad has productivity apps that are more developed than Android. Which one do you want to do more?

In the US the price difference is compelling.
I guess the tegra 3 is faster than the A5X.
Plus the Nexus gets the play store credit (though I don't place any value on transformers movie because I wouldn't purchase it).
I just got my fingers burnt with the HTC flyer due to lack of O/S upgrades but I think this will not be the case with the Nexus 7.
If nothing else it will make the other Android tablet makers up their game. I would like a premium Android tablet with decent O/S updates and audiophile sound quality at an ipad price.

You've got your prices wrong. 16GB iPad 2 w/Wifi only is US$399 minus tax and shipping. The US$529 you're talking about is the 16GB iPad 2 w/Wifi+3G. (Source: Apple's website)
@OP: As others have stated, it really just comes down to preference. I tend to like the 10 inch form factor for use at home, while the 7 inch form factor is better for on the go.
clearly they are not directly comparable, if you want 10" then its the ipad if want 7" then its the nexus7. If you want productivity then its the ipad, if you want some fun then the nexus7. If your worried about bang for buck then in my opinion dont buy any of them if moneys not an issue then buy both:laugh:
I don't think the decision between N7 and iPad2 comes down to hardware, but rather iOS vs. Android.
I don't like iOS, because I don't like being nearly forced into iTunes. So for me, it's a really easy decision. I do have an iPad 1, which was a free gift from one of my business technology vendors. I like it for web browsing and streaming NetFlix. Fortunately, I can do these things just as well on an Android device, plus be able to stream Google music, and much more easily load content onto the device.
It is absolutely true that the Apple App Store has many more apps available - however, I don't care much because I don't use any of them. I use NetFlix, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, and the web browser. Again, all work just as well on an Android device.
I sold my iPad 2 32GB for £255 and bought a 16GB Nexus 7. I just got bored of iOS, it felt stale in the end. And I wont miss iTunes at all.
Also I think the 7" form factor will work better as the iPad just felt a little too heavy and cumbersome at times.
After debating back and forth for over a week, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the 16GB. 8GB storage in 2012 just isn't reasonable for me. I have way too much media.

I too find IOS constraining.
7" is more portable but without 3G, I can't just bring it out and have it working - and I know that I can tether but it is a hassle which reduces its utility.
"buy both" is an option. I just like shiny gadgets and so that is a good solution... if only I could grow some more arms then I could use multiple devices at once !

Well, you said full-size. There is the (discontinued) TouchPad, which is 10" or so, and you can get those pretty cheap.
They run CM9 pretty well, I have to say. (full disclosure: I helped port it). My big issue with the touchpad is I'm not a fan of the size, and it's a little thick/heavy.
If by full size, you mean a 10.1" tablet, then your options are very limited. The really good 10inch tablets start at about $350 (the 16GB Asus TF300 can be had for a twenty bucks more than that).
Alternatively, if you're not looking for something cutting edge, then there are plenty of refurbished last-year models going around for less than $300. Acer is selling refurbished A500 units for as little as $229 on its eBay store, and if you keep an eye open on sites like techbargains.com for similar deals that come and go.
(Refurbished might be a bit of a gamble, but it's paid off handsomely for me in the past -- bought my Nook Color that way too. Buying direct from the manufacturer helps though. Just make sure they really are refurbished and not "pre-owned".)
Finally (at the risk of raising the ire of the Android gods, you can also get a refurbished iPad 2 for $319 from Apple, which isn't a bad price either.
But if you could stretch a little beyond $300, and want something new, then I think the Asus TF300 is probably your best bet at the moment. There might be some downward pressure on 10-inch prices with the introduction of the HD models (the Acer A700 is only $450, which is the same price as the lower-def A510, so that has to drop) but I haven't seen anything yet.
I would definitely go with the Nexus 7. I planned on selling my Nook and HP Touchpad to get one.
Nexus 7 would be stunning if Google included a mSD slot. Looks gr8 as is, not stunning though.
Which one would you prefer, the nexus 7 or a galaxy tab plus 16gb wifi only? The last ones are at $237.90 refurbished at amazon. The GT+ will receive a software upgrade, so the only differences will be the ir blaster, back camera, sd slot, screen resolution, NFC (don't know what it is ) and the chipset. Several sources say Google doesn't take any margin on the product, so you are basically paying the manufacturer price for the Nexus 7 (and any required warranty by law). There won't be anyone beating that for a while.
Oh, and it weighs the same as the Nook Color/Tablet
The only bummer I see is that adobe flash won't be officially supported (if I didn't misunderstood), but since the N7 may be the next developers tab I think it will be somehow updated by devs.
The lack of sd slot almost made me not to be interested on it but when I reviewed the GT+ vs Transformer Prime reviews and benchmarks I got convinced, the Prime is just to fast. If I get the N7 I will buy the 16gb version, 8gb it's just to little (like the Nook Color's memory).

Well, budget tablets are most likely going to have a slower processor, lower resolution, older version of android, etc. If these things aren't important to you/him/her, get a cheap one.
As far as Mexico, you'd need to do some research on what services work there. Play Store content and services like Google Music and Pandora are blocked in some countries. You should probably make sure even the Nexus 7 will work there. Not trying to dissuade you, but make sure you don't have surprises waiting for you.
Edit: make sure your budget tablet has a capacitive touch screen and not a resistive one. Still seeing resistive screens around for some reason and they aren't worth a dime.

the whole point is for fiance to skype or tango to her mom over there. Important aspect is that the device doesnt have issues, and is supported. Seeing how its a nexus device, i would assume google will update it with priority if there are any issues with it. Its not like i can have her ship it back or fix anything with her so far away and not understanding anything about tech.
ill have to see what results ill have connecting to the internet over there or downloading apps from the market.. worse case is i can download everything i need and install it here before i ship it.

While those cheaper 7 inch tablets are sold at a profit. Common sense says those cheaper tablets are using considerably cheaper parts and build quality to be cheaper and profitable.
I'm pretty sure there is no sub $200 tablet that has a 1280x800 IPS display and quad core processor or even comes close. I think this really is that much better.

Yeap, I agree, the Nexus 7 is the best price for the above avg specs that are included.
$200 is stupid affordable for a tablet with these specs, you shouldn't even be considering anything else lol
There is NOTHING better for the price.
The only reason for you not to get it would be if Google Play won't work in your country, and there may even be ways around that.
I just read that Archos is releasing a new line of tablets which one or more is aimed right at the nexus 7. its rumored to be same price.

Been down the "surely the cheap tablets from China aren't that bad, right?" path before. Have a 10" Zenithink C91.
Pros:
Had cool things, like OTG & HDMI at a price well under any competitor similarly equipped.
Easy to open to get at the HW.
Cons:
The TFT screen in a tablet form SUCKS. At minimum, only consider something with a capacitive IPS screen.
I was sold an "ICS" tablet. Their version of ICS came with no support, no source, was buggy, and crashed constantly on the 512MB of RAM. Flashed the table to GB, and the experience got a whole lot better.
When these manufacturers make a new device, old devices are left to rot - no firmware updates.
Bottom Line:
Cheap tablets offer cool tricks if you can't afford the do-it-all Transformer Infinity's of the world.
But they come with no support from the manufacturer, no ability to roll your own distro, and are often oversold on their capability.
With name brand tablets being sold for a mere $200 these days, I would stick with the name brands.
The no name ones also pretty much always don't have working ics 2d gpu acceleration

Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.

Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

I'm looking forward to use a tablet for browsing the internet while I'm on the couch / bed and if possible watch a few episodes of my favorite TV shows while I'm traveling (train / airplane). I'm not much of a gamer and for music I've got my little iPod. That's pretty much it...
I have only one problem with mine. I can't put the damn thing down.

well....yes. I've decided to buy a smartphone (name is not relevant) once, and after only 10 days, I've regretted that decision already. I think after 4 weeks you can decide that already, don't you?
Yes I'm still happy with my purchase. I bought it on July 17 and since then I didn't use my iPad 3 yet. Same thing for my gnex... since I got jelly bean on it I've yet use my iPhone 4s. I understand why apple hates android now!

Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

I could see the Nexus tablet line having the following:
A cheap ($99 seems low, but okay) 7". A higher quality 7" ($200-$250?). High quality 10".
While I have little money for toys, and I like paying low prices as much as anyone, I don't necessarily want a Nexus device that's had every cost corner cut. Especially things like storage and ram, which the current Nexus 7 seems to have slow parts.
Perhaps Google is trying to entice the masses further by lowering the price of a decent device, but I hope they realize that you can't make money off being the cheapest on the market. You might sell more, but your margins are smaller and your support costs are way higher because of cut corners and the sheer amount of people owning one.
I just see a lot of people being disappointed with this new device as you know they will compare it with the first Gen n7. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better.

I can see why they would want to offer a cheaper N7-type device, but my biggest concern is supply chain issues. The current Nexus 7 is the only device that hasn't had any severe supply issues from the play store in the past few months.... but that's probably mostly because it's already been out for 6 months.
I'm happy enough for my current N7
We have more than enough cheap low-end tablets on the market nowadays..

That's one way to gain market share, N7 were practically sold out everywhere in town over the holidays - DH got herself an iPad2 X'mas 2011 and the iOS people are releasing #5 in March or Spring of 2013 ...

This reminds me of Samsung. They just made a half ass 4in budget phone to sell (S3 Mini). Their intent was to provide a phone for individuals who do not need a power house. The problem is the individuals who review phones like power houses. In many reviews Samsung was ridiculed for making the phone (even though it was meeting their intent). Hopefully Google is not treated the same way.
I can see the headline now, "iPad Mini ($349) dominates against new Google Nexus 7 ($99) .... Google stands no chance".

You're so right, I really like these Nexus phones (4 especially) and Galaxy S3, but the screen size puts me off - it's to big. Gimme a nice 4,2 inch with a decent resolution and I'm sold, but yes, such phones get lost in reviews because they don't stand a chance competing with 6" super triple HD 3D Gorilla Retina screen, 16core CPU and more RAM than my PC has.
I already have a decent tablet (N7), all I want is a decent dual, maybe cheap quad core, ~4" Nexus phone (once I got N7 I realized what android is really supposed to look like, because CM is not stable enough for me to run on my Xperia, so I kept it stock).
Of course Nexus line is only top notch, playing in the big league of S4 and iPhone6, so yes if they released a normal 4" nexus phone, headlines would say "where's your god now Android fans, always you have been bashing iPhones 'small' screen, now you're buying one yourself".
Nexus 7 is cheap enough as it is, we don't need another 800*480 7" tablet, that you can get in the Pharmacy (seriously, I saw some cheap tPads in local pharmacy), make a cheap Nexus phone!
Any news about it?
I'm on a low budget (about $150) and was hoping to get that cheap nexus 7 if it's released

I'm thinking of getting Nexus 7 16Gb wifi. It just got officially launched in India for 16000 INR I.E. 295 Canadian Dollar.
I have a android Phone soo I'm familiar with things..
My question is - Is it worth it to get it if you own an android device?
I'm into Movies ,Music and Gaming
I think it will be great..
Kindly guide me

For me personally Nexus 7 is awesome for reading books, browsing, gaming but maybe not so with listening to music unless you root it and instal some custom ROMs that have some music mods that will make your music sound ALOT better.
Its also ideal size so it fits almost in any pocket.
But there is also another option to save it because in May there will be the next gen of Nexus 7, but then you will have to wait another 2-3 months to get the hands on it.
The choice is yours. =)

My Nexus 7 is not main main Android device. I spend a lot more time on my Samsung S3 and my 10.1" Acer A500. The reason? Such limited memory.
However...
When I go somewhere that I want an e-reader or want to do internet-based things that benefit from a larger screen and my big tablet would be a pain to drag around, I bring along my Nexus 7. It's thin, light, has a great screen, and is very portable. If it only had a micro-sdxc slot, I'd use it a lot more, but for what it is and what it cost, it was a worthwhile investment.
Get it if you have the spare money to buy it. After getting the Nexus 7 I only use my Galaxy Nexus phone for calling and as car mounted GPS, everything else is done on the Nexus 7 because it perform so much smoother and on a bigger screen, while being 7inch still making it portable.
This tablet honestly saved me money because I don't even consider buying a Galaxy S4 or HTC One anymore since I won't be doing anything on a phone. (They're not Nexus devices anyway.)
You might consider the 32gb version, but it depends on your usage. Especially Google Music cloud feature isn't available in India. If you have a DLNA server in your house where you can stream movie off then probably 16gb is enough. Not everyone lug everything around with them.
PS. This tablet do not have HDMI out capability.

Those Tegra2 tablets still give me nightmares (I owned 5 different models; acer a100 a500 toshiba thrive Xoom asus transformer), Tegra2 performance was so bad is the reason why I got put off tablets til now. But the Acer A500 was the best of the lot).
