[Q] quick question about the whole ICS bricking debacle - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so ICS is being pushed to the AT&T Note as i type this. i realize there is a bricking issue with the official release of ICS for our international notes. is the bricking issue linked to the fact that we have Exynos processors, or something beyond that? I may have already answered my questions, but i've done so much searching tonight, that by brain is fried. thanks for the help.

You have not searched at all. It is not related to processor but eMMC firmware, kernel and recovery.

The most important thing to know is not to recovery data wipe, factory reset, and do a nandroid thing, while running on ics. Be on safe kernel like speemod, goku, and, gl kernel.

But is the eMMC, kernel, and recovery specific to the Exynos or could technically the bricking fiasco also apply to the at&t version also?

It's the eMMC firmware revision that allows a faulty command. It has nothing to do with processor. Read the link posted above, it explains it all very thoroughly.

eMMC issues from leaked kernals?

I've been seeing some posts about the leaked ics roms/kernals messing up the EMMC chip or something like that. Can anyone please explain what exactly this is all about?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Basically a faulty driver in the leaked Samsung ICS kernels can cause damage to your eMMC chip while flashing, wiping and handling large files. Just about any custom ICS rom currently released is based on the leaks so there is a chance you run into trouble when you're using one of them. It might be a very small chance, it could be the bug will never be triggered but it's a very nasty one if it does get triggered.
It basically means Your Galaxy Note turns into a Galaxy Not. You won't be able to use it and need a motherboard replacement to fix the problem if you're affected by the bug.
Here's the extended version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633938
My bad i didn't see that sticky
That's some nasty stuff.
Geez Samsung really needs to step up their game for releasing official 4.0 for us. It's already May

The cyanogen mod 9 experimental builds are safe and do not use a leaked kernel. Only safe if coming from gingerbread obviously. If on a ics leak then you MUST reflash gingerbread by PC Odin only! If I was on a leaked ics I would get flashing on PC Odin right now. Get outta there guys! Cm9 is awesome.

The first thing i did was install the brick bug app and it gave me the result saying my emmc chip is having the brick bug, even when im on stock kernel n FW.

Which GB kernel should i install so that im safe? I searched but was not able to find appropiate solution. which thread should i refer to?

I know that a wipe through cwm may cause the brick bug. But a simple factory reset to the phone can also cause it to occur?
I might be terribly wrong, but my understanding is that both cwm wipe and factory reset done from affected ICS ROMs may result in superbrick, GB is considered safe (does not contain the feral command affecting the emmc), that's why most threads on ICS update suggest changing ICS ROMs via GB

Yeah maybe they must be safe, but when i installed the superbrick app from chainfire it showed that my phone was prone to bricking.
Since im on stock gb,il root my device and install the PARANOIDANDROID rom to be on the safe side. will that work ?
gotbrick app shows if you have the affected hardware, it does not mean that any operation will result in brick, it means there is a probability that this may happen when you attempt to flash or wipe using ICS kernel (the thread I mentioned is here),
since you plan to go from GB to ICS, there is no direct risk, at least no related to known causes of superbrick,
anyway, to spare yourself unnecessary panic attacks in the middle of flashing - before you attempt to flash anything read instrutions until you feel comfortable

[Q] Upgrading to ICS Rom Question

After my fiasco with a bootleg http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742680, (thanks to everyone for your help in telling me I was "less then smart." ) I now have a genuine N7000. It currently is running Gingerbread, and I would like to flash it to ICS. I am not using it with a provider right now, so the "Software Update" in the "About Phone" section will not work. The question I have, is which ROM should I use. In the "About Phone" section, it states I am running Baseband N7000XXLA4. Any suggestions? Please let me know if you need any more information. Thank you all for your time!

If you want ICS look for android 4.03 and choose what country you want but any country will do. WARNING. If running on ics dont do a factory reset, recovery data wife, and nandroid ( back up &restore). If you want to be safe remained in gingerbread.
Check out dr ketans thread in the stickies of rom development section. It lists all the roms by region both for ics and gb. You can just select Tue newest one for your region.
There's also further information on rooting, but perhaps leave that for later.

Thanks for the reply! Currently my phone is unlocked running Gingerbread, if I update to ICS, will I have to unlock the phone? I bought an unlocked phone because I travel all over the world and got tired of having to get used to a new phone every time I am in a new country. I usually stay 2 months at a time, and it is easier and cheaper to use a carrier in country than using my cell phone from home.
Thanks for all the help and information!

Flashing won't affect unlock. Just make sure you upgrade to correct region and all connection settings and everything will be exactly the same.
If upgrading to ics, read the sticky about the superbrick bug also, basically don't perform any wipes on stock ics roms, danger of brick.

If you're only visiting Asia and have a us sim, or swap out for an Asian sim just for the trip, then stick with a us code rom. Also, if you flash a different region it will perform a full wipe of the device which is dangerous on current stock ics roms, so it probably safest to check your current code and flash the same.
We all start somewhere, I found android flashing quite complicated at first but it starts to make sense quite quickly. Hope it helps. Do ask if you need further help flashing.

Also, how do I find out what region it is currently from without having a simcard in it? I will be putting a sim card into it once I get to Japan in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all the information. Super Bricked My Galaxy Note (Binary Count =0)

I super bricked (no download mode or recovery mode) my Galaxy Note while restoring from CWM backup last night, I had LP8 installed, binary count is 0.
I have already sent it to the Samsung Service Center, question is: what should I expect??
FYI : My motherboard had been replaced 2 times already earlier due to emmc bug.

What on earth are you doing to consistently brick it? If you're under warranty then you should be ok - given that the emmc is a known issue which they're aware of..
On a side note, I'd suggest not being so flash happy and a little more reading before you mess around..
Good luck..

Good thing you have warranty, but still bricking it 3 times now, I wouldn't want my device on the service center it's inconvenient and really not worth wasting my time, I'd rather be very careful flashing than going to the service center for repairs. But anyways that's my opinion. It's your device and you can do whatever you want with it

My thoughts are that you followed instruction to a degree.. If you're on a Stock GB there's no fear of Brickbug at all...

Installation of custom rom for a begginer(help required)

Is it safe to install a custom rom on n7000, because of it's brickbug? (If yes, please help me how to install and which one to install)
I've never installed any custom ROM nor have i rooted till now. And mine has the 'brickbug'.
And i would also like to know what version OS i wil get on my device and whether the S-Pen feature remain intact ( S-note and
stuff). I just want my note to be smooth, fast and battery miser because i am now on official 4.1.2 it lags a lot and is battery hungary.
Looking forward for detailed help.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Yes it is safe to install all recent custom roms. Probably even safer than staying on stock.
Your s-pen will still work, with every rom i tried. however, if you do not go for a stock-based rom, Samsung apps(including S-note) will not.
Also, consider the age of your battery. Your poor battery life may be related to an old battery. (Still, flashing a different rom should improve it.)
1st you need to root your device safely:
Check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Then check this thread to find different ROMs

Flash philz kernel in recovery and you will be safe from brickbug, although only few cases of brickbug have been reported in JB, it is there on ICS for sure. So just flash philz kernel and reboot recovery before flashing anything from there, then read the instructions in the custom rom thread of your choice and follow.

I actually prefer this method of rooting, and installing a custom recovery, and "fixing" emmc brickbug all in one flash.
After that, follow the instructions in the first post of the rom you are flashing.
