Does anyone knows if such a thing exist: a small microUSB to microSD card reader ?
i.e. something like the tiny USB key that have a micro SD card reader, but with a micro-B USB interface (instead of a full USB) ...
I have been searching crazy lately, but nothing !!! (I can't believe that some manufacturer did not had this idea ?!)
Furthermore, micro USB card reader a very rare ! Any reason ?
As a result, I am about to DIY the thing inspired by the following example (but with micro-B usb and with direct connection):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1713914
Starting with something like:

and
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313271
The final goal would be to create a micro-usb to microSD adaptator as small as possible ...
Any better idea ? or product you know ?

If you don't mind using a usb memory stick, you won't need an adapter. It will be a lot cheaper & probably faster (depending on what class sd card you use).
I only found a Micro-USB card reader, but it had a giant box on a short cable so it totally sucked. I searched for OTG micro reader on ebay and found that one.

Yes, but all existing solutions are somewhat bulky ... which really contrast with the sleak devices!!
A tiny microUSB dongle that integrates seamlessly with the device would be marvelous (it could be not bigger than 1 x 1 x 0.5 cm) ... or an other approach would be to integrate the storage in the case (where there could be a heck of storage) ...
If I proceed to the DIY, I would post the pictures.
What you need to start is something like this:
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10425
And manage to swap out the connector.

I have been looking for exactly the same thing!
The nearest thing i found is this
Now if only someone made something like this with a micro SD and OTG i would buy one straight away
I was planning to use this with the smallest microSD card reader. Smallest method possible at the moment.
Amazon: SANOXY Micro Male Female Adapter
why the interest in a card reader? Just for the size? seems like a very tiny flash drive would be cheaper per/GB and more flexible.
yes, but even such a solution does not exist based only on micro USB (from what I have found)!
I was just thinking I should take an OTG and attach storage to it, then I saw this thread. So any1 try anything yet?

I have that one, It's basically the same exact one Kas206 posted but re branded. I wish I still had it to show you a pic of the microSD card glued in there but I lost it (lol down side of being tiny).

Be cautious about the adapter type, don't buy a mini USB when we need micros
What I'd love to see is a case that plugs into the usb port and has a built in microSD slot (or even a full SD slot, don't care which) and a port for charging.

Thanks for all your help mate... I guess we just need to wait and hope some manufacturer will come up with what we want.

Yes - I think they should design the upcoming XDA with mutiple memory slots (CF, SD, MMC, MS etc).. Good idea!
LOL... But that sucks if we need to wait for XDA/MDAIII to used different types of memory cards. It means we need to spent another thousand bucks(closed to) to have it.

well the backpack is not that expensive
of cause one can not always be sure that
using a converter like the backpack to get CF
to use a converter to get MS would work 100%
there will only be such a product as a ms to sd if there was a high enough demand for it
i doubt there is
is it not only sony who use ms ?
sd seem imho to become the std like CF was which is getting old and will prob be outfased in 2 years or something

I guess you're right CF will be faced out in a few years, SD might be the next standard BUT micro drive still using CF isn't it? So I guess there are still some debate on that huh!
I also read somewhere that mini-SD is also coming out soon. So I guess we'll just wait and see what happened in the few years.
Belive me - You don't want to have XDAIII with CF slot. Just look at Your precious XDA or XDAII close to Your face during a phone call and imagine it 20% biger and 50g havier. Even now it's way too big as a phone especially that summer is comming and I have totaly no idea how to carry it without all those winter clothes, deep ass hell pockets

Where I can find this item? I'm looking forward to buy it. Is there anyone who already has and working?
So what does this actually do?
What it does is allow you to put an SD card from your camera into one end and then connect the other end to the tab. This would allow you to move files back and forth, hence the name Camera Connection Kit.
BUT this product is vaporware because the tab is not a USB host. This thing will never exist and never did exist. It is something that the iPad has and perhaps a optimistic marketer either at Samsung or Expansys slapped a Samsung logo on a pic of the iPad dongle because they expected it to be released.
There are a few other solutions to getting pix from your camera to the tab, none are elegant and some are expensive.
1) Remove your MicroSD from your tab and insert it into a SD card adapter and then insert into your camera. This is cheap but is a pain and the microsd can get hosed if you do not carefully mount it and dismount it when reinserting or removing.
2) Root your tab, buy an Eye Fi X2 Pro card for your camera, install Android Tether for root users and use the card to wifi transfer to your tab, using Eye-Fi Server for Android OS or Fe-Fi or MoPhotos from the Android market
3) Root your phone, remove your microsd, use mobidapter (USB to microSD dongle) and then use root explorer to transfer pics to you internal SD card.
in other words, tab is not gadget to work with camera becaused of this connector issued
darn....... why does all this camera kits stuff have to be in SD Card Format???? My camera only supports CF cards..... and a lot of those mid to high end DSLR used CF.

Honestly... you probably don't want to use your tablet for DSLR photos anyway.
Besides the fact that RAW images are large files (~20-30MB) and huge resolutions (18 Megapixel) that no tablet can adequately handle... there is no way to calibrate the screens or make or convert RAWs on a tablet.
I would use a point-and-shoot camera with a microSD card inside a SD adapter.
Tablets are supposed to be about putting small size and mobility foremost over wide functionality or productivity.
would the current usb kit for the 10.1 work on the p1000?

How does the viewsonic gtab have usb host on 2.2¿
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Because Viewsonic customized the rom and added it in.
so it becomes a software problem?
i thought there are hacks to enable it on 2.2/2.3 too?
it was possible to inject 2.1 with host mode, many cheap tablets did it. However the p1000 is missing the host protocol on-chip so cannot do the required functions like power regulations etc. So tis more of a no hardware than a software problem.

my thoughts are the usb chip doesn't have ability to control unit to socket power, hence why anything that requires a fair number of volts wont work (memcard reader, mouse, thumbdrive etc)
And I have a few 2.1 tablets with USB host, and a 2.2 tablet with usb host (Scroll and some other weird make).
So not sure what is not correct here? If you have info that rebuts this please share?

I would very much like to be wrong on this, but all of my development and rough research along with the fact there are no volt dependent accessories for the tab7 lead me to conclude that it doesn't do it!
The reason I want to be wrong is that I have a few tabs here and want them to be the product of choice for a project I'm doing, the limiting factor is usb host, I would really want it for 2 hardware accessories, but I found only evidence that the chip that controls the in-socket and the onboard controller do not have ability to play with voltage to the socket thus can never accept any accessory that requires above the base voltage of the board.
Again I REALLY WANT TO BE WRONG here
Let me know if you have any info to say thats wrong please please please !
HI! i've found some pics of the nexus 7 motherboard and some connectors seems to be unused... If you look at the "con1" (the one used for micro usb connection) it has 22 pins 0_o. Maybe we can find a hardware hack =D

We could do a "simple" (dangerous) test: HDMI has a hot plug detection pin, the only way to check is provide one pin with +5v dc and check if any other pin sends a ddc query.... but how can we find the hotplug pin (if there's any)?

From the teardown it was pretty clear there was space for the rear camera as well as HDMI.
The IO presenters were using units with HDMI, so it was probably the same motherboard, populated.
You would have to be a hard-core hacker to want toi add your own HDMI. No idea what is missing beside header and connector. Probably not as bad as adding MHL
I am happy living without HDMI.
Maybe I will never use the hdmi connector but hacking electronical things when i have to hack biological ones every day is a nice way to spend the time xD

Can't back it up right now but will frantically google to find it.. But I remember reading that it had the hardware for mhl but currently not enable in software?
but just tested my jellybeaned gnex and that works fine with mhl so not sure how much truth there is to that.
I can vouch for the photo of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port, as well as a comment from a presenter that the special units they were using for presentations had HDMI.
No, I can not provide any links. That was thousands of pages ago...
I do not believe the Nexus 7 has the MHL chip, or any provision for it. Asus is not listed as a MHL provider.
Samsung (Nexus) is a MHL provider, so the hardware there would not be a surprise.
In that teardown review (where the OP got that image, I believe), they mistakenly said it supported HDMI out and included a picture of the HDMI cable from the nexus Q. They later retracted that comment.
That might be the source of the confusion.
There was at least one actual picture of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom.
I think a reviewer got their hands on a presenter's unit.
The image you're looking for is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736916
The internel dev versions (the ones used for presentations) had mini hdmi.
So, it does make sense that theres space on the board.
Thank you for that picture link! I searched everywhere for that...
At least that is one less reason to think I have lost my mind...
I'd love to be able to solder on an sdcard slot, if that's all that's needed. It's generally pretty easy to solder to headers if you're careful about it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
From the teardown, I don't recall seeing any space for an SD card.
Rear camera - yes, HDMI - yes, but not SD Card.
I could be mistaken...
Also, the external storage problem has been pretty much solved with a USB OTG cable and stickmount.
we could solder a slod for an additional sd card... there's enaught space to fit in a sd card without "external" access.

we're counting pins and waiting for more info =P
look here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/KjNsrjlvHZdFWEGF.huge
we have 14 free pins and an hdmi data connection requires only 12 wires + 5v + grnd.
i'm looking for someone who can do some simple tests on the unused pins.
when i will have the nexus 7 i'll do it by myself at uni but maybe someone who have the I/O version now could do something meantime.
Looks pretty interesting to me hope we cram a sd card In there somewhere.
Here's my first attempt at making a compact micro sd card reader. So excuse the overall finish. If doing it again, i would be a bit more precise with cutting and maybe use something other than superglue so it fills in the gaps neatly. This was just a one off to see if it works! Was tested with a spare 8GB i had lying around. WIll obviously be getting some class 10 cards!
Plan is to have a few 32GB cards then can just keep a load of storage in wallet etc. Got the idea from another member on here who did a micro usb to usb adapter.

Are you just using this for carrying media around with you or do you have it for file transfer on and off? I'm assuming your rooted so does StickMount work with this application to allow you transfer on and off of any file type?

Carrying media around. Can get a holder for micro SD cards that's credit card sized.
No I'm not rooted, I use nexus media importer
Cant believe there is not a patented form of something like this yet out.
People are sleeping at Lexar and such companies.

Here's my first attempt at making a compact micro sd card reader. So excuse the overall finish. If doing it again, i would be a bit more precise with cutting and maybe use something other than superglue so it fills in the gaps neatly.

I used a hot glue gun to fill in my adapter. Worked well to ensure a nice, tight fit, and you can easily cut away any excess that squeezes out between the cracks.
here is mine, it's a regular microsD reader + micro USB plug.. combined all together in a heatshrink
works great with stickmount
I've managed to modify and repackaged the stock 4.2.1 kernel which combined with my Vold.fstab gives me simple, auto mount, read write access to my stick without custom ROM.
It won't show up in storage devices (yet) cause I need a suitable apktool to modify the framework, but if anyone's interested and wants to stay stock as possible, I'd be happy to share it when I get home.

Hey guys here's the final recipe:
1) Get the Nano MIcroSD card reader kinda like this one;
2) Get the small and nice 32GB UHS-I MicroSD card itself, like this one;
3) Hook'em up with one of these bad boys, depending on the style you would like to get: usual flash drive , flexing and long , g-style flash drive
$5 + $2.5 + 25$ = $30 Real 32 gig gansta stick-it-on-the-fly OTG-USB-SD CARD Reader extension combo, dawg.

Nice job, however, for additional advantage of that UHS-1 card's speed, you should probably get a UHS compatible reader.
Hm, thanks. I'll check, I wonder if there even is one with the size we need here...(

I hope so, that would be really sweet, otherwise the nice high speed card is kind of wasted.

Does the drive show up in /proc/mounts? If so, my app Open Explorer Beta (I can't post links, but search for "OpenExplorer" in the Play store), should be able to see it. If not, I'd like to get it to show it. Let me know.

I've modified the ramdisk so it shows up in /storage/usbdisk and I've symlinked to /usbdisk
It shows up in all file manager managers and it shows up in /proc/mounts.
In /proc/mounts it shows as follows:
/dev/block/vold/8:1 /storage/usbdisk
I will check with your app now.
EDIT: It didn't show up by default in your app, but I changed external storage path and it showed then. See screenshot, attached.
EDIT2: I have posted the kernel in the Dev section now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35111006#post35111006

Hey guys,
So i got bored and decided I wanted to try expanding the storage capabilities of my N7. Using StickMount Pro, an OTG cable, a Western Digital 500GB HDD and some double sided tape, I mounted the HDD to a back case and viola... I now have a 516GB N7!!! In the near future I will attempt to add a 4-port USB hub... stay tuned!
UPDATE:
Well this started as a bored guy having fun and has evolved into an actual project.
I've decided to scale back somewhat in an attempt to be more power friendly.
On this attempt I scrapped the HDD (for obvious reasons). I modified the OTG cable and added a 4 port USB hub with a dongle for my mouse. The remaining 3 USB ports will be used for 2x mini USB card readers w/ 32GB micro SD cards and another dongle for my wireless keyboard.
BTW the flip case makes a great mouse pad.
UPDATE 12/29:
Now that some of my X-Mas goodies have arrived I've added 2x mini USB readers and 2x SanDisk Mobile Ultra 32GB Class 10 micro SD cards.
Stay tuned for more awesomeness as the rest of my goodies have yet to arrive...
UPDATE: 01/10/13:
This project has morphed a few times now but I finally have a configuration that works for me. I wanted to make this a project that anyone can do without all the soldering and modding that I see in other threads around the web. I originally wanted to make a case with the mods built in to it, but after some serious consideration, I decided that I wanted a much easier project ( I am quite lazy). The only real modification I made was to the USB OTG cable, but is not necessary to make this work.
So here's some pics:

Final Set-up:
4 Port USB hub
2x SanDisk Mobile Ultra 32GB Class 10 micro sd cards
2x SanDisk micro sd card readers
Wireless Mouse w/dongle
Wireless SixAxis game controller w/dongle
Bluetooth Keyboard / Case - yes the keyboard is actually a case as well
Auvio Expanding Bluetooth Speaker
kudos for trying to work on the storage problem..but i wouldnt really call duct taping a harddrive to a case a "mod"
velcro woulda been a smarter idea as thats what i plan on doing using otg cable and usb-to-mini adapter so no extra cable

As you can see I have too much time on my hands and don't take anything seriously. This was just a fun way to waste some time. As for battery life... I get about 2 hours if I'm lucky lol.
SSDs are getting cheaper and use less power, that might be a route to go for the next mod
loooooooooool
Off topic, but what is that shell case you're using, OP?
Though implementation was a little funny, this is an excellent idea!
SSD and some more creative work with cable shortening/plug modding would make a pretty sweet beast.
Thanks for sharing!
Not really a mod but I do like the concept...Imagine having a really thin SSD drive strapped to the back of your n7
Doesn't that affect portability? I've contemplated using a wi-drive, but wondered how much constant activity would deplete the battery
Why not a usb stick instead of ssd? Can pick up a 64gb one for less than £23..... Take the externals apart and make your own case for it?
Case
Hey,
If you don't mind me asking, what case is that?
Thanks, Chris.

here's the link to the one I purchased: http://www.ebay.com/itm/380474235920?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
not sure if it's still available but the name brand is Fosman.

I'm currently working on a few different versions. The one pictured, one using a SSD (which is much more portable and uses way less battery) and one using a 4 port USB hub and 4 x 128 GB Flash Drives. More pictures to come upon successful completion.

Don't waste your time using a HDD as battery life suffers greatly but my next attempts are going to be much improved and hilarious too
this is too funny

what about making a case for the hdd that it sits in and clips to the edges of the nexus 7 like a car mount but a hdd to the nexus type mount
