[HELP] Rooting and flashing with kernel LC2. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends, im on a quest to get ICS on my device, and I pretty much have a grasp of how things should go.
1) I root my note.
2) I flash a "safe" kernel.
3) I use CWM to get CM9 (or any other room) and Gapps.
The thing is, my note is kernel LC2, and there are no guides for that. Well, not really, this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 says:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When No Any other method works to Root your device, use this
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that, this will downgrade your ROM to KJ1, after that you can update it.
Download: https://rapidshare.com/files/3690281..._FACTORYFS.zip Thanx to Chainfire for making it.
(special thanx to schiwa for providing premium a/c to host file)
Mirror : http://d-h.st/HJM (Thnx to Dev host for providing premium ac to XDA recognise contributor)
- Make sure your SGN is NOT connected to your computer
- Reboot your SGN into "download mode" (Vol Down + Home + Power)
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select the "SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.tar" file
- Connect the SGN to your computer
- Make sure "repartition" is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot TWICE
- Done.
Now you have your device Rooted, Install Mobile Odin Pro n update your device to any new ROM with Mobile Odin.
So, I take it that that method would work, but im not entirely sure about the downgrade, is it relevant or can I just root using that way and then pick up installing CM9 from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1627854 from the "install a safe kernel" point?
Any help on this matter would be very, VERY appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

yes you can downgrade with above guide
Here is exactly full guide for which you are looking for

Thank you for quick reply. I started compiling the files need to flashing. So far, I could do following. Please advice me whether I am on the right path or not.
1. Rooted my tab with Z4root. Now I got root permission.
2. Downloaded Odin3 v1.7.exe and s1_odin_20100803.pit for flashing
3. Downloaded Roto-JMI-Full-v2.zip and Roto-JMI-Upgrade-v2.zip
Now, using Odin PDA button, I want to flash Roto-JMI-Full-v2.zip ?
Few questions:
a) Is this correct way of flashing or I am missing something?
b) Does above flash install Recovery also ?
c) which files need for PHONE and CSC files ?
d) Which firmware best suitable for Indian Tab ?
Thank you in advance for clarifying above.
I really appreciated reply for my questions as it would allow me to move forward. I will ensure a good documentation at the end of the process for benefit of other users.

Install Adfree or something which requires root acess for installation. Once rooted download something like root explorer from market which allows you to backup the modem.bin file. Or me or somebody else can just upload the file here.
Read the post/link in the thread where you downloaded Roto's JMI rom.
Use the .pit file from Roto's link not the thing which you posted...same place where you got the same ROM file. If you are flashing first time/from another rom then use the Full v2 zip file. Else use Update v2 when flashing from one of Roto's rom.
Connect the tab to your pc, reboot and go into download mode...press power+vol down button while rebooting...a yellow triangle icon with an android digging will come up...to get out of download mode, just keep the power button pressed till it rebooted normally.
Once in download mode, open up Odin and check that the yellow com box option is on. Check repartition option to ensure everything is wiped and you have a fresh install from scratch.
For PIT select the pit file downloaded from roto's link
For PDA select the Full.tar file
For PHONE select the modem.bin file
For CSC leave it blank...
Once done, recheck and hit start.
PLEASE CHECK ROTO'S JMI V2 THREAD IN THE DEVELOPEMENT SECTION...it has a link to howto which is old but gives some idea of how to proceed...for pit, pda, phone follow as I suggested and things will go fine...

I followed the steps after flashing 'full' tar, it rebooted tab, started the normally. After that, I verified that, all applications , phone (GSM) and wifi working fine.
Now my question is do I really need to flash *second* tar file ? what is it for ?
^^No. It is only for people upgrading from previous versions! You are good to go!
Now, I want to install CWM recovery. Please some one can confirm below steps:
1. Make sure to have Samsung Kies installed, and your tab at least connected once, to be sure the drivers are correct.
2. Your Tab must be Rooted.
3. If you wish to do a backup, now is the time.
4. You will need an SD Card with enough free space for the filesystem conversion, and to put the Overcome ROM on before we start. (An empty 4gb should be plenty, as long as it is empty, or close too)
5. Download and Extract the following file to your computer: http://www.apksmash.com/corodius/galaxytab.zip (Contains "Odin3 v.1.7.exe" "Overcome_Kernel_v1.0")
Now, we will Install the Kernel and perform the EXT4 filesystem conversion.
1. Turn off your Galaxy Tab.
2. Turn your Galaxy Tab on into DOWNLOAD mode (Press Volume DOWN and Power On at the same time).
3. Open Odin3 v1.7.exe on your PC.
4. Connect your Galaxy Tab to your PC via the USB cable.
5. Make Sure the ID:COM box is highlighted yellow (meaning it sees your tab).
6. Click on the PDA button and select the Overcome_Kernel_v1.0.tar file you downloaded earlier (make sure PDA is ticked after selecting the file).
7. The only boxes ticked should be:
A. Auto Reboot
B. F. Reset Time
C. The PDA tickbox
8. Click start and wait for PASS! to show highlighted green on Odin.
9. Your Galaxy Tab will Reboot, and get stuck on the Samsung Boot Screen. This is fine.
10. Turn your Galaxy Tab off by holding the power button for about 5 seconds.
11. Turn your Galaxy Tab on into RECOVERY mode (Press Volume UP and Power On at the same time).
12. The Galaxy Tab will now perform the EXT4 conversion.
13. Sit tight, depending on how much data you have, this can take quite a long time.
14. Once finished, click reboot system now (by pressing the power button).
At this point, You have installed the Overcome Kernel with CWM included and converted the Filesystem to EXT4. It has been reported that many stock ROMs will boot and run fine now, however some may not, but it just depends on your ROM etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11713685.
Would be there any problem ? or is there any easy way to install CWM Recovery.
I had bricked my tab while modding battery icon and it was not booting now. Now i want to flash with the custom rom available here. I am noob to flashing so just want to confirm the steps mentioned above applicable to the bricked tab. Can somebody guide me for bircked tab.
Please mentioned the good custom rom with Ext4 conversion at the time of install. I am using indian tab.
@OP:- Sorry for hijacking this thread but find some info here for my queries
Can you get into download mode? If yes then you should be able to flash...but I would suggest checking"I bricked my tab" threads in general or developement section...

k. am downgrading Firmware to KL3 , and i need procedure. but mainly it should not effect binary counter.
It's not possible to root LA4 directly at the moment, so you'll need to downgrade your device first:
- Download a firmware that's rootable from here.
- Download Odin from the link provided above
- Enter "Download Mode" on your device by shutting your Note completely off, then press and hold Volume Down + Home button + Power button
- Start Odin
- Unzip the firmware (the zip file you just downloaded), and you'll end up with a md5-file
- Go to Odin and click "PDA" and choose the md5-file
- Press "Start"
- Wait
- Done
Now you can root the device and get CWM, so go to this thread and do the "I Want ROOT + CWM" at the end of the first post.
- After you're rooted download LA4 again from the first link in this post
- Transfer it to your Note
- Open CWM on your Note
- Flash it
Done. You now have a rooted LA4.

No it won't.
Just make 1 thing clear. binary count raise only, If you flash any custom ROM/Kernel with PC Odin.
Follow LordManhattan's advise and still once refer Installation guide in detail in post #2 n 3 of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Just to add, Downgrade Firmware shud be direct rootable. (before KL7), N if particularly i specify, I can say Downgrade first to indian ROM KL1, I have flashed this ROM in at least 5 Notes.
That means Flashing Custom ROM using CWM doesn't effect Binary Count rite??
if you flash using CWM or mobile odin it wont if you do using oding from PC it will still not sure about official firmware

Hey,
Dr.Ketan, can you tell me please if there is a chance to root the original LA4 (never changed rom) if I don't have access to a Windows and only to a Mac?
I only want to root it for the basic tweaks and apps. Don't need a custom rom at the moment. I want to root it and use it as is while I wait for the official ICS.
Thanks.
There is no Queston of window or Mac,LA4 is non rootable, to get root, first u need to downgrade older rom.

Thanks. I got ahead of the events. I didn't meant that. I meant if I can do the procedure of downgrading and everything I might need to do in order to root or to install a custom rom or another stock using ONLY my Samsung Note and a Mac.
Q1: I can downgrade using a exclusively a Mac with Lion on it?
Q2: If the answer to Q1 is affirmative, can I root it after downgrade also using only Lion on Mac?
Thanks again!
I have never heard mac pc odin. Plz google for it. So without pc odin you cant downgrade.

Yes, I saw there was one root with mac solution, but works only if the Note is rootable. LA4 is not. So I must downgrade first. )))))
Nevermind, I'll try to do it with Windows, somehow. Thanks!
I am also new to this, and this thread is very clear. The bit I do not understand is what Kernal I should be running. Custom roms available can have a variety of kernals e.g LA3, LA4 etc. Do i have to choose a rom that has a kernal compatible with my phone? is there some rational to running one kernal vs another? I notice that it may be possible to flash a rom and keep a previous kernal e.g a CF kernal. is this advisable? your advice would be very welcome.
You don't need to flash a new kernel. Most of the custom ROMs includes a custom kernel that's good enough, but if you're interested in testing a few of them then you can do it without any problems.

Now is when I am lost. I did all the above (thanks, by the way) and I run KKA now. I had LA4 (Germany) when bought it, then downgraded to root.
Now I am rooted but when I try to update firmware with CWM, nothing happens. I have to put the ZIP in the Note or the MD5? I tried with the MD5 two times.
Is there something I do wrong? Is any other method apart from CWM? I mention that when I downgraded and first booted, CWM said something about "not being compatible and some functions were disabled".
Any ideas?
EDIT:
I couldn't work it out as expected and I went back to my original LA4 (Germany).

a) coming from a rooted GB-ROM:
- download Abyss Kernel 4.2 from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?c65mndvpk6ocbaa
- put zip-file on your USB-storage
- boot in Recovery
- Flash Abyss Kernel 4.2!!!
- boot back in recovery (you find this option under 'advanced')
- FullWipe
- Flash ROM
- reboot system
- ...you are done
==> there have been reported problems with a constantly rebooting system when doing installation coming from a GB-ROM as posted above! So the safe and 100% successful way is installing LPY Stock-ROM, root Stock ROM and then go on as described below under point b2). Do not ask for a tutorial on how to install and root LPY Stock ROM....it is describe enough here in Forum!

Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.
Problem is Vol Down + Power won't respond, and so is Vol Up + Power. :/
Sent from my HTC Desire S
make sure it is fully charged.
Power down.
Launch Odin.
Cable connected.
Vol-down + power.
If odin suddenly see your device, flash away.
Hope it will. Search here but seems almost all threads got no fix. :/
Damn why didn't I see that method above before.

Overcome method is quoted hundreds of time in this forum. Most reliable method to "restock" and install CWM recovery for P1000 device
I'm downloading the GB-Stock-Safe-v5.zip now. It sucks to have slow internet.
By the way, do I have to flash that Modem file too? I can see that it's a zip file but on the screenshot the only thing he flash is the "modem.bin", extracting the modem zip has some META-INF and updates folder.
Lastly, regarding "gt-p1000_mr.pit" - is this common file? I have downloaded this already earlier in the separate tutorial.
Okay, so I downloaded the zip file.. followed the instruction here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34690776/The Installation Guide The Overcome Experience.png and it's a success based on my attached screenshot but after completing step 5 I am stuck to here coz step 6 says that tab should reboot by itself but mine doesn't. It looks like it reboot but blank screen and the lights are on. It stays that way. No reboot. No image like that on step 6. :/
Even after disconnecting the device and turning it on it stays on blank screen w/ the lights on.
Someone can help me, please?
No idea who no reboot.
But try again the same thing.
Power down.
Vol down + power
flash again.
I'm no expert but does tabs also involve bootloader stuff? Like in HTC devices we have to unlock bootloader before we can root and change rom and stuff?
Sent from my HTC Desire S
it does, the Overcome guide mention that too.
Can you find an official froyo for your device?

No, I did not check my device info before flashing, I thought it will go smooth. :/
Is official FROYO rom's available here? Would it help if I flash it?
Thanks.
In sammobile firmware.
The locked boot loader should allow you to flash back the same firmware, I assume.

Okay I will check it out.
By the way, would it be possible that the cause of this is because I did not root first?
EDIT :
Sucks most of the files : This file does not exist, the access to the following file is limited or it has been removed due to infringement of copyright.
:/
No. When you flash with Odin, root is not required.

From the 1st post I never see you mention which gtab P1 variant you have, you only give the link from youtube that show how to upgrade gtab p1000 7 to gb.
so, can you specify which gtab p1 variant do you have?? so we can help you to unbrick your tab in the right path.
P1000? P1000L? P1000N? or???
It's P1000N (sh%#%#%t!!! I only know this now! I always thought I have the other model...) This is so careless of me.
I am downloading the Firmware www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=8&view=2712 now, should I still use the same PIT mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13682956&postcount=1 when flashing?

Just for the curious, this is the firmware I flashed : http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=8&view=2712
Thank You Very Much for helping me/replying here : priyana and qm4n76.
Phew. Lucky you.
So not a symptom of locked bootloader.

How To get Rid Of Froyo 2.2

my father has a stock samsung galaxy tab (p1) running the horrible android 2.2 with touchwiz all over it
he asked me to update the device so it can run ICS
i've done that with my SGS1 which was easy, but now i have a problem.
when reading the guide for installing cm9, its says "This guide applies to a Samsung Galaxy Tab (GSM) on the stock 2.3 release"
my sgs1 was already running 2.3.4, so i just followed the instruction and that was that, but my fathers tab is stuck on 2.2 and has never been rooted or anything
my question is can i simply just apply the steps or do i have to update the device to 2.3 and then follow the instruction
i cant afford to brick the device or i'll never hear the end of it, he love his tab as if it was his child or something
PS. I've learnt how to root the device using (superoneclick) and i've also found how to flash CWM on it, can i do that and then flash the CM9 Rom to it.
im sorry if missed a similar post somewhere but im still a noob at this and i really wanna do it (froyo + touchWiz is a recipe for a crappy device :silly: )
Use overcome method.
I am sure you have seen so many posts here with the same instruction
(many of them by me too)

Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread
But since you want ICS, continue reading the guide.
- download ICS (CM9 or AOKP) and gapps-ics and put in external sd card.
- boot to download mode
- you need to use Odin to flash Overcome kerner tar
- once flashed the tab reboots.
- ignore the robotic voice, just force the tab to off
- boot to CWM recover (press vol-up and power )
- flash ICS (CM9 or AOKP)
- after flashing the system will convert your tab to MTD partition, but it will probably bring you to recovery or stuck at boot.
- force reboot to recovery again
- flash ICS again
- immediate after complete, flash gapps
- reboot

thanks a bunch, i'll download the stuff and see how it goes
wish me luck
one last question
when flashing the GB rom, i cudnt see the checked options in ODIN, it seems to me that all three options (auto partition, re-partition and i cudnt even read the last one) should be checked
yes, F. Reset Time (Force Reset Time)
all three checked
thank you so much priyana, and im soo sorry for being such a noob and wasting your time but pls bare with me
everytime i try to root the device using superoneclick the damn thing gets stuck on step no.5 (waiting for devices) is there a workaround this thing or maybe a different program, i've tried rooting my friends device using the same version of the program (his device is gt-i9100G) and it worked perfectly, why this idiot tab is giving me sooo much trouble
No need to root.
Just flash using Odin. Just start from page 7.

can i downgrade from 4.0 to 2.3 by flashing the rom using odin, if its possible, what r the steps
ps im having some problems with the wifi in cm9
Hi, yes, same thing as before
use the guide, start from page 7 where the Odin screen shot is
GB-stock-safe, with pit file selected and "repartition" ticked.
But hang on, you are from middle east.
Do you have wifi cut out when a SIM card is inserted?
That is a known issue with middle eastern tab due to some wifi country code, that affects all Android 4.0
But I could be wrong, you may not have the issue.
Worth a try though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445766
i am
and i've never heard about this before, it used to work ok before
all the phones in the house works ok witth the sim inserted connected to wifi
i'll give it a try anyway
back to plan B
i've downloaded a rom for saudi arabia (arabic language support) but the downloaded files is .tar.md5
how can i flash this one
Do try the fix anyway.
