You can use ADB , if you know and have used it before, if not http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010

Thanks a lot man ! I have read it and i'm installing it.
Now my question is, which command shall i use in adb to do factory reset? As far as i've searched, is it 'adb shell wipe data' ?

you can try
adb shell
wipe all
or
adb shell
su
wipe system

You can go to CWM and make a full wipe + format SD. You just need volume keys and the home button, no touch

Guys, i've done the adb steps, but i am having a problem:
When i start the Windows XP assistant to install the driver, I choose the option "Don't search. I'll select the driver". So next step I click on the "Use disk" button, and i tried either with 'C:\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver' or 'C:\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver\android_winusb' and it pops up saying "There specified path doesn't have information about the hardware". What can i do?
If i choose the "Include this location in the search", then when i use adb, it appears "device not found"
I also tried downloading SDK 1.5 following this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3862962&postcount=89. But there is no "usb driver" location.
Hope you can help me with this,
Thanks again

I remember reading you need to uninstall other java components before installing the new one, but can't be certain on that

The problem is that when i select the location or the .inf, it tells me that is not compatible for the device. I don't understand why
EDIT: I could make it work, this is the last output of adb shell wipe all and system, is it ok? i see many times the 'error' word there haha
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/194/screen1es.jpg
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/201/screen2tn.jpg
EDIT2:
This is the last thing i did, is the job done with this?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/860/screen3vu.jpg/
Then i tried back the wipe commands but this started to show: /bin/sh: xxx not found
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell rm -r /system/sd/app
/bin/sh: rm: not found
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell rm -r /system/sd/appprivate
/bin/sh: rm: not found
Thanks again

Can anyone tell me if its clear my data with that?
I'd also like to ask how does that command left the phone. Once they repair the lcd they'll have to install a new rom?
Thanks

Don't panic, this is easy to fix..
Do a reset, cache erase from recovery mode (Volume up + Home + Turn on).
Root the device, install busybox and run it, install andoid terminal emulator the execute the followings in terminal emulator:
- su
- busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin
- reboot
That is it.
EXCELLENT!,
When you say wipe the cache is that option called "wipe cache partition" and where can I download busybox from etc? Im a bit of a noob with the fixing my screw ups business.

Yes "wipe cache partition".
Root using the program from here (if not rooted yet): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Busy box and emulator from the market. run busy box and click install and wait till it installs then run emulator. You must choose allow when prompted in both programs.
Hi, did all of this, it would not accept the reboot command so I turned the phone off and on. I dont know if the reboot command is integral to solving the problem but it has not worked. Is there something else I need to do?
it says
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
change the owner and/or group or each FILE to OWNER and/or GROUP
Options:
-R Recurse
-h affect symlinks instead of symlink targets
-L Traverse all symlinks to directories
-H Traverse symlinks on command line only
-P Dont traverse symlinks (default)
-c List changed files
-v List all files
-f hide errors
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What does this mean?
I don't think that you have executed the commands right, maybe because that I should have written them more clearly.
Execute in emulator:
su
(hit Enter)
Choose "Allow" and exit the program when done.
Start Emulator again and execute:
su
(hit Enter)
busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin
(hit Enter)
reboot
(hit Enter)
The phone will reboot and it will accept the card if the nv_data.bin staill intact. Try the steps above and I hope that every thing is right.
Unfortunately it has not worked. Have you got any more ideas? I appreciate your help with this.

Did the commands execute right, no errors?
If so then check the IMEI number: Click on Phone in the home screen as when you dial a number and dial *#06# see the number that comes off, is it your correct IMEI number?
There is no IMEI number there, which is slightly worrying haha
no errors either

in this case you might need to read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780509
It might be that the nv_data.bin file in your mobile is damaged, I'm only saying that it might be that, the only way to know for sure is to check the IMEI number in the phone under "Settings"--> "About phone" --> "Status" if there is no IMEI number then a reflash might correct that, if the IMEI number is like 000044...etc then the nv_data.bin file is damaged and can only be corrected if you have backed up the /efs folder. Please read in the linked thread to find out before doing anything.
I had this problem. I just reset my phone. When it rebooted it installed Sim Toolkit and now it works fine & reconises the Sim. Do you have Sim Toolkit installed?
I had this exact problem spent 2 hours trying fixes etc, I had my SIM card in the wrong way around, I was so used to putting it in like my old phone i did not notice the little picture saying the way to put it haha I had taken it out to flash a new ROM and assumed it was the ROMS fault cause it stopped working
no mate it doesn't. Just done a quick factory reset without success.

[Q] Terminal Emulator....Help??? Anyone???

I have wiped and restored more times tonight than I can count....HELP!!!! I have a very lean rom. So lean it that it has no file explorer and I don't want to install gapps. All I want to do is install Titanium Backup (the .apk file is on the root of my SD card) with the terminal emulator and I'll be all set. I have had all different error messages, and I'm more confused now then when I started this adventure, 6+ hours ago. Any help would be great.

Just download a file manager, (es fileexplorer, or root explorer) and install it that way. or if you have adb and all the drivers you need for it.
Put the .apk in the tools folder in the SDK
and go to it in a command prompt and type adb install titaniumbackup.apk..
Or whatever you apk is named.
if you need help, dont quote this, just send me a pm for help =]
(Posting this again for others reference all this is pulled from my previous post which you can find in my signature - "Terminal/adb shell commands")
Adb commands are completely different than terminal commands.
First enter "su" to get substitute user (the # sign)
Then enter "mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system" to make the root r/w
to copy files use "cp" command
to move files use "mv" command
to remove files use "rm" command
to change file/dir permissions use "chmod"
to change directories use "cd" - "cd .." will bring you back one directory - "cd //" brings you back to root
to list files in the dir use "ls"
to read/mod/combine a file use "cat"
to edit a value use "echo"
to see running processes use "top"
to kill a process use "kill -9 PID#HERE"
ex) cp /sdcard/download/myapplication.apk /data/app/myapplication.apk
If you know any linux commands then you should know your way around terminal emulator. If you want i can give you more examples just let me know. Hope this helped
To answer your question OP, just follow my example. Except in your case it'd be something like this:
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/TitaniumBackup.apk /data/app/TitaniumBackup.apk
replace "titaniumbackup.apk" with the actual file name of your apk file.

Yea they are. Besides, personally I'd do it the way you mentioned; either first using a filemanager (easiest imo) or via adb install
Only reason I replied was in case there was a specific reason he'd only want to use terminal emulator and not adb or a FileMan
Edit: Oh I see what I think you're referring to, the line:

Thank you everyone. I need to use Terminal Emulator, because I'm not allowed to install the ADB drivers on my work computer, the ROM I want to use did not have a file manager packed in it and I don't want to install gapps to download one from the market. I simply want to install Titanium, so I can add a file manager and a couple of other select apps so as not to clutter up the system. As soon as I flash back to that rom, I'll try it the above mentioned way.

Ah thats sucks bro, it come in handy now and then, Listen to this guy up here since he knows more about TE than I. Also a simple google "terminal emulator" command and it might add on to your comprehension.
And judt to get this outta of the way, in TE if you do type su <enter> you get #? if you dont #,you get acces denied; denied meaning youre not rooted. Meaning it cant find an su in the bin or xbin, rendering TE pointless. So make sure youre root

It's not an issue of compatibilty..... It's an issue of the IT people at work having our computers locked up so we can't install / uninstall anything from them. All I can do is transfer files from the pc to my sd. I don't have authorization to install the necessary drivers for my phone.

If you can transfer files from a computer to a device, then you should be able to take files from a USB drive and put them on the C drive of your computer.

To clarify.... Yes I can access my sd card from my computer. Yes I can transfer files between my sd card and my hard drive. However, when I try to install the ADB drivers to access the rom in my phone I get a little message that I'm not authorized to add / remove hardware or software from the computer....to please contact my IT administrator. Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, maybe it's not. If I can learn to use this emulator though, it doesn't really matter. I have ADB on my computer at home if I really need it, I'm just not inclined to turn the computer at home on very often. Thanks again to everyone for the help.

Sitll no good installing ADB at work, but I did get a good ADB workout at home this weekend rooting my son's Optimus......Wholy crap!!! Revert to old software, lose the lcd display, root with rage against the cage, push recovery to the phone, revert back to current version of software, lose root, and then re-root on current software with recovery already installed, what a process that was!!!! BTW.... Terminal Emulator commands worked perfect. Mistake I was making was trying to "push" from my SD card instead of "copy".

4X extremely slow after rooting/reboot

So, I followed the guide we all did here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818502
And before someone asks: I have deleted the Backup app (IS11LG_SystemBackupTest.signed.apk) we had to install during rooting after the phone was rooted.
The phone then happily ran, rooted. SUpersu was installed/updated, the phones root check said it's all perfect, I was a happy camper. But today I had to reboot it. I can't say if it was the first reboot after rooting, sadly. The phone boots up, arrives at the lockscreen (some colorful defaultthing, before I get to see my GO Locker screen after login), and then stops being responsive, it basically at first feels like it's not reacting at all. Some things are responsive, strngely ... I get accurate sounds when touching the screen for instance. If I then wait, I eventually get to the SIM Unlock ... which is also totally unresponsive, it will maybe show two digits, then freezes up. Strangely, I could type the remaining digits and hit OK and the SIM would unlock ... but the screen no longer showed what I typed. I then arrive at GO locker, can unlock it (sluggish and slow again) and finally am properly logged in, but still totally sluggish and slow. Needles to say it's a pseudobrick that way, unusable.
What's going on and what could I check?
Please try the following:

Remove the "SystemBackupTest" app, if you haven't already.
On your phone, go to "Settings -> Developer options" and make sure "USB debugging" is TICKED
Connect your phone via USB to your computer.
Open a command prompt (may need admin privelages, right click, run as administrator)
Type without quotes "cd C:\o4xr" and press enter.
Type without quotes "adb shell rm /data/local.prop" and press enter.
Type without quotes "adb reboot" and press enter.

Thanks, that fixed it! It's not easy to do, as the scrolling lists do not work, either, and you can't seem to get to the developer options, it won't scroll. Strangely enough "internally" it seems to do things ... if you re-enter the options, they're down to the end of the list, it looks like it doesn't update the screen properly (much like when I had to enter the SIM code).
Anyway, it's fast again, whew ... I was scared. What is the local.prop thing, if I may ask?

I'm not entirely sure, I just know it gives us temp root for the rest of the root script to run.
Hm, so its' not a systemwide ini file or so, that existed before ... it was created during the above rooting process and was an undesired leftover from it? I'm always a bit worried if I delete something with such an unspecific name in the OS

Its actually created by the SystemBackupTest app.
The script then removes it just before issuing a reboot.
The only way it can come back, is if you accidently open that app again before uninstalling it.

It looks like you have either plugged in more than one android device, or you have an android emulator (from the SDK I guess) running. Unplug all USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) and then try again. Good luck!
If you have an emulator running try "adb -d shell rm /data/local.prop"
Edit: To see all adb-devices type "adb devices". This will return a list of all adb-devices connected (emulators + usb devices)

The devices is detected and the command is executed, but the file does not exist. Make sure that there is a file "prop.local" at /data. If not, you may have a different problem.
Maybe you have an emulator running or Bluestacks installed... Uninstall Bluestacks...
I don't think that this is the case as the device shows up with a serial number in the "adb devices" list.
To be sure it is the correct phone you could compare the serial number shown in the list with the serial number of your phone (you might find this information in settings -> about phone).

An emulator is a program which emulates Android so you can execute Android-Apps on your PC. BlueStacks is an emulator. It may show up as an adb devices, but this is not the case here.
Back to your problem: Are you sure the rooting process worked?
Did you reboot your phone after rooting?
I didn't root my phone under ICS so I don't have any experience with this
no one raised this question to confirm or did this info was provided anywhere
What version of ROM? ICS V10x? JB V20x? User could had used the wrong guide.
Best way out is to do a reflash and retry rooting if all fails.

Looks like the path to your SD card is different to mine. Try replacing /mnt/sdcard/ in the original command with /sdcard/ , ie:
Code:
su
cat /sdcard/recovery-6028.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
Code:
su
cat /sdcard/unsecure-boot-mmcblk0p2.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p2
sync

ooops didn't look at all the screenshots. The last one shows your SD card path actually is indeed the same as mine. I'm all out of ideas then.

Did you do it in recovery mode from the start? When I did it it was when the phone was just switched on normally into the main OS.

Looks like the path to your SD card is different to mine. Try replacing /mnt/sdcard/ in the original command with /sdcard/ , ie:
Code:
su
cat /sdcard/recovery-6028.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
Code:
su
cat /sdcard/unsecure-boot-mmcblk0p2.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p2

Tutorial CWM
Dude forget what they say everyone tells different way, read here what i writeto you and make the steps like me.
1. Unlock Bootloader and get SU Permissions
2. Go to PlayStore download SuperSU and than start give permisions to it to update Binary , than go to Setting in SuperSU and install in System
3. Reboot Phone
4. Copy the 2 IMG data to root from SD and rename recovery-6028.img > recovery.img & unsecure-boot-mmcblk0p2.img > boot.img
this to IMG data must be unpacked from RAR(Zip) from Dexter.
5. make sure you have Unknow Sources and USB Debug Active , and also make sure that Superuser is replaced by SuperSU after reboot
6. Go to PlayStore and Download Android Terminal Emulator
and give in Terminal
Type "su" without quotes and than accept the permissions from SuperSU after that give in
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cat /mnt/sdcard/recovery.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
IF YOU USE UNSECURE BOOT tha use this
su
cat /mnt/sdcard/boot.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p2
sync
Hope it helps and youv got it run

It's in the system root for me, it's a symlink. Though it didn't work for me in the cat command, which is why I suggested using /storage/external_SD/ instead which did work for me. It looks like the OP has the files in the right places, and the hash in the command line screenshot implies that SU is working correctly, so I'm all out of ideas now.

GUIDE:
1. when you are running unlocked bootloader and is rooted goto step 2.
2. download attached zip files and extract content to internal sdcard location
3. use adb shell or terminal from market and execute the commands below
4. you are now running with native CWM recovery and unsecure boot, which enable adb root at boot instantly.
5. boot into recovery, by rebooting device and hold VOL-DOWN during bootup. (from power-off = keep holding vol-down during power on)
execute these 3 commands for recovery image install
Code:
su
cat /mnt/sdcard/recovery-6028.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
execute these 3 commands for unsecure boot image install
Code:
su
cat /mnt/sdcard/unsecure-boot-mmcblk0p2.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p2
sync
or see screenshot here
do this at your own risk, and do NOT try this on old 4.0.3, which is not with unlocked bootloader, and you are required to install KDZ again.
THANKS to:
skydev - for his continued effort in finding root and giving our device full freedom with boot/recovery.

You tried this? Only the path changes, but... I ran out of ideas.
Like I told you, be creative. Change /sdcard/ to /sdcard0/... don't know man...
"01. You must have Root access (https://mega.co.nz/#!0opzyBjS!DSoW-CaTRi49JcW58yvwCCEug4hz6VmnevdJ1prcdpE)
02. Extract both *.img files somewhere
03. Copy those files to your phone (no matter if internal or external storage, I used /sdcard/Unlocking/ so below commands will contains my directory)
04. Run terminal app on your phone or adb shell from PC while you have connected phone
05. Run those commands:
su
cat /sdcard/recovery-6028.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
sync
su
cat /sdcard/unsecure-boot-mmcblk0p2.img >/dev/block/mmcblk0p1

REMEMBER!
If your folder is different than /sdcard replace it in those commands above!

OH MY GOD I'm stupid, I copied files with ZERO byte.

[Fixed] Power button broken. Stuck in stock recovery mode.

Hello, I am very new to this forum. I searched everywhere but couldn't find an answer to my problem. I really appreciate it if you can help me as I am a total noob in android.
Previously my power button was a little buggy, it works on and off, and I solved it by wiping the partition cache in stock recovery <e3>.
My power button completely stopped working today for no reason that I know off.
Out of frustration, I tried what I did last time by booting into recovery mode (using quickboot this time) but then to realise that I can't choose anything/ get out of the recovery mode.
Nothing works by removing the battery. When the battery is reinserted, it boots back into recovery.
My phone is rooted, non CWM. Has a bad eMMC chip with a susceptible kernel. (latest update from KiES, no custom ROMs)
I got this phone as a prize, so there's no warranty that comes with it.
What can I do now? I have heard of this ADB thing but I have no idea how it works. Does it help? If so, how?
Thank you.
Edit: Service centre fixed it. Turns out its a pretty complex issue.

you could try adb.. you need to first install adb .. its included in the android SDK package. eg http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241935
once installed.. boot into recovery... connect phone to pc.. go to the adb folder and run command prompt in there.
then use command
adb devices
<the output should show a device connected> if yes then
adb reboot

Hello, thank YOU very much! I got it to reboot properly and working. And I learnt a lot in the meantime.
Words cannot express my gratitude right now.
I have another question though, is it possible for me to wipe partition cache thru adb?
yes using adb shell, you will get the access to file system.
for this adb should run as root.
adb root
adb shell > this should give a # and not $
mount /cache
ls > this should list the files. check for cache folder
rm -r cache
same way dalvik cache (if you want)
cd data
ls > lists dalvik cache
rm -r dalvik-cache
adb reboot

Okay, so I tried to do what you suggested, and got stuck at adb root. This is what I got in return:
"Adbd root cannot run as root in production builds"
So what I did was to skip to the second step,
"adb shell"
This is what I got in return:
[email protected]:/ $
I entered the command "su", granted su access on my phone using supersu (got a pop-up) and got this:
[email protected]:/ #
Moving on, I entered "cache /mount" and it repeatedly failed to mount.
I read up a bit of it and it seems like its because my bootloader is not unlocked.
But given the fact that my power button is malfunctioned, I cannot unlock it by normal means. I gave some thought onto PhilZ safe kernel but then the fact that my phone is susceptible to brick if I unlock the bootloader (there will be a data wipe right?) makes me stuck at where I am now.
What are your recommendations?
Additional info on eMMC:
[email protected]:/sys/class/block/mmcblk0/device # cat cid | cut -b 19,20
gives back: 19 (susceptible)
[email protected]:/sys/class/block/mmcblk0/device # cat name hwrev fwrev manfid oemid date type
gives:
Name: VYL00M
HwRev: 0x0
FwRev: 0x0 (not completely safe)
Manfid: 0x000015
Oemid: 0x0100
Date: 01/2012
Type: MMC
