Dialer force-close - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
i have stumbled upon the following issue and i cannot solve it.
The dialer is force-closing evry time i try to search for a number begginig with 02(or any other country code), because it adds a slash after it(resulting in 02/xx, in the showed case it was 02/35) which causes the following error:
Code:
E/DatabaseUtils( 2328): Writing exception to parcel

i have the international version of SGN n7000 with stock android 4.0.3 without root.
rom "version": XXLQ3
I have wiped the device several time, flashed it with differenet firmwares (all of them stock ICS with different CSC). Only worked with INU(india) (this did not add any slashes) but since i would love to stay on the stock (because of snote and spen) i would like to make it work on XSK as well. Did anyone else experience this issue? Can anyone help? Thx,
VoiD

first take manual backup of contacts by
contacts - import /export - export to USB (OR Sd card)
Try this
Setting - application - all - phone - clear data

Thx for the quick reply, but sadly, this did not help... Do you think that flashing gb, wiping and flashing ics would bring any results? Its not like i cannot use the phone with this bug, but it makes me angry

Wipe or reset must work, but as u r on ics, u need to go long as u said.

this didnt help either, the problem still persists.
i have: flashed the GB rom
wipe/factory reset/wipe cache
ICS flash,
still no results.
this is maddening :/

Use ex dialer from playstore.....

Have you try this trick
http://jjpda.blogspot.com/2012/07/android-404-contacts-force-close.html

This is really annoying! I've always used dialers with t9 (much easier when you have over 500 contacts). Strangely default Samsung dialer adds SLASH "/" after the first two taps as v0id_walker said and there is no setting to disable it. Thus the search stops on the second tap and leads to a large number of names that follow this combination and if you try to list them the phone app freezes/crashes. Haven't seen this bug(?) before ICS 4.0.4. I also use exDialer but that's not the point...
Does anyone on a ICS 4.0.4 ROM have his default T9 dialer working properly?
just flashed the update of the same ROM (Fusion 2.6) rebased from XXLRG to XXLRI with no theming of the dialer this time and everything is fine....
Tried CleaNote 4 withLRK modem - and the bug is back!

Sadly I have the same issue with stock 4.0.3 and 4.0.4. Very annoying bug.

Same here ,
Enter a couple of digits / letters - Hit the Drop down arrow to search matched contacts and Contacts hangs then FC every time...
Yup - It's a pain but I tend not to search my contacts too much so I don't get bothered by it too much..

Did you update using Kies or with Odin?
Btw if you manually delete the slash ("/"), the speed dial works and there is no crash when opening suggested contacts. Does anyone have any idea how we can fix this dialer issue?

I updated OTA.
I've not tried deleting but will test it, As I said it's not really a big issue for me..

I just tested on a Samsung Galaxy S III. It has the slash ("/") in the number the same way as it does on the Note, but this does not break the smart dial, e.g. the slash is omitted when performing smart dial search, which is how it should work on the Note too.

Modifying Contacts.apk

Alright, I'm trying to make a JPY ROM. Normally I'd put the Captivate Contacts.apk in the ROM instead so it doesn't say "Video Chat", etc. Of course the Stock Widget too.
However, on JPY it force closes.
So, I decided to try and edit the i9000 Contacts.apk directly.
I found these four files:
contact_call_row.xml
contact_call_row_land.xml
contact_detail_dialog_layout.xml (there's two of them)
And removed the line with "video_call" in it.
Putting the .apk on my phone, the Contacts app opens. When you click on a contact, it force closes.

You have a null pointer error. It's most probably a findViewById() in the code that does not find now the corresponding xml entry.
One way to solve it would be to make the entry very small and transparent, but IDK how it will mess up the rest of the layout.
Another option is to try an aosp contact. I'm assuming the source for the captivate contacts for eclair is not available. Right?

Worked better than before.
Now I need to figure out what governs the icons when you click on the Contact picture. The thing that lets you jump to MMS, Dialer, Gmail, Facebook, etc.
..
This is what I meant, that's what's left to erase:
Can you post the apk you've modded?

Doesn't need to be working. We could test something and avoid duplicate work.
There are three different quick_contact_videocall.png images. In drawable-hdpi, drawable-hdpi-finger and drawable-land-hdpi-finger. I would reduce to 1x1 each and see the effect of it.
Sorry, I should have clarified. I'm not looking for the finished apk. I just wanted to lend a hand and tear it apart to see if I can help.

I am sure you already know, but the Phone.apk and DialerTabActivity.apk from the telus rom work beautifully with JPY roms.
I'm not at my computer.
What I changed was the four .xml files in the original post. Only, instead of removing the line I changed the size of it to be practically nothing.

Neither of those is the problem. Contacts.apk is what won't play nice.

Yeah, i figured i would mention it.
Just a thought, rather than modifying this file why don't we look into why the 2.2 apk's with out video calling are force closing on JPY to begin with?
Do we have a log of what it happening in that situation? it may be easier...

Did that:
Inside QuickContactWindow.smali there is the following:
Code:
new-array v0, v0, [Ljava/lang/String;
const-string v1, "vnd.android.cursor.item/phone_v2"
aput-object v1, v0, v2
const-string v1, "vnd.android.cursor.item/vcall-address"
aput-object v1, v0, v3
const-string v1, "vnd.android.cursor.item/sms-address"
aput-object v1, v0, v4
const-string v1, "vnd.android.cursor.item/email_v2"
aput-object v1, v0, v5
const-string v1, "vnd.android.cursor.item/contact"
I imagine this is a good place to start.

OK, I'm rethinking this: the buttons in that bar are not fixed and will depend on the options that are possible in your phone and with that contact, i.e., if you have gtalk you'll have a button for chat, if the contact has an address you will have a maps icon.
That means that the list of icons are created at runtime based on some info. We need to figure out what is reading it and where the info is stored. Then, we should be able to remove the item very cleanly. I'm guessing is a list of intents somewhere. I'll dig a little bit tonight, but I don't know how much I will be able to understand those .smali files...

I wish there was a way to search through the .smali files the way Windows can search through .xml files or .txt files.

[Q] How can CM7's LatinIME & User Dictionary be used with Zeus 6.11 ROM?

Hi everyone,
I'm just trying the current Zeus ROM since CM 7.2 unfortunately has some major problems on the P970.
Because I was using CM all the time with my old phone, I really got used to some of its awesome features and one thing I just can't resign is the Keyboard. There are 2 reasons for that: It's the best keyboard imho and I'm really used to it AND I have lots of User Dictionary entries that I just don't want to lose.
Besides, I just don't understand why almost every ROM includes the HTC-ime?
So what I did was:
- Installed Zeus 6.11
- Extracted LatinIME.apk from the CM 7.2.0-RC1 package
- Installed LatinIME
- As soon as that keyboard is selected in the input method settings, I get random FC's. Seems the user dictionary included in Zeus is not compatible (check attached log).
So the question is: Is that really the problem and can the user dictionary included in CM7 installed?
When I try to install the UserDictionaryProvider.apk from the CM7 package, the installation fails and even if it worked, I assume that it requires a special native library, doesn't it?
Thanks in advance for any helpful comments on this!

App - Zattoo @NativeSD in JB ?

Hi all,
is someone using the App Zattoo on NativeSD Rom (e.g. Xylos Pacman 1.2a)?
I'm very interesting if this is running, because I can't get it working at the moment (app crashes after starting "zattoo wurde leider beendet").
Zattoo was running before for me, but as I can remember it was when my Rom was starting from SD-Card, but the old way. Running WindowsMobile in Nand an running Android via hared...
I think Zattoo is a very interesting App for watching TV on the HD2 - for me here in Germany.
If I get it running again, I will try to start it with an Switzerland-Proxy, because then also the private TV channels like RTL, SAT1, ... are avaible (already tested on PC)
Edit: Crashes also in Nand-Rom (tried NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.2 // NAND with DataOnEXT)
Hmm.., maybe the Android Version (JB) is the reason? I think it was running on ICS on SD (WinMo Nand) when I was able to use it in the past.
Edit2: I will try to test in EvoHD2v10 ICS 4.0.4-full HWA "Fastest ICS ever" with NativeSD method. => Doesn't run
Hmm.., what can it be?
Thanks a lot

Thanks for the answer.
But yes, exactly the Player Version I have installed. It is necessary when starting Zattoo from within Browser (by using a proxy for getting an switzerland IP adress and also all the german private channels . Starting Zattoo within Browser otherwise with german IP won't start because for german IP there is the App for using Zattoo.
But I can't start the Zattoo App anymore (also with Flash Player installed, but I think normally not needed for the app)
In the past last summer on holiday I used the App and it was very very good. Smooth playing the TV channels.
Can someone analyse something from the logcat when the Zattoo App is crashing?
Because of a Null pointer exception...

There is already a thread for this here

and I think there's another one somewhere beside that.
I tried hacking the API and changing API level 19 to API level 17, repackaging it with apktool. It loaded successfully on the Gear but I get this error.

There has to be a way to do this, hopefully without loosing the sync functions and camera support.
Same here
Short answer, without source, is no. Samsung has already said this won't be TW-based.

Google released some of the source code for android wear. This may help Devs get Android Wear on non-support devices.....maybe

Has anyone contacted f0mey (dev who created null_ ROM) regarding this? He would probably be able to help with some of the Gear-specific drivers, if not a lot more too...
