I will soon be opening up my phone (T-mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition) to replace the glass screen with a new one ordered online. I've never even opened the phone before and was wondering if someone has performed this operation before. I would really appreciate any pointers, tricks, cautions, pictures, etc.
Thanks.
lawrence... where did u get the replacement??
i wonder if they got replacement cases! i chiped mine
The company I bought the screen from was GetHighTech, Inc, in California. By coincidence, they are about an hour's drive away from my home.
They only sell the glass screen and high capacity battery replacements. The screen comes with absolutely no documentation or instructions. I just got it a few minutes ago.
just wanted to see if you had any luck with the changeout.
Screen replaced successfully: observations
It was a tricky operation, but I finally managed to replace my broken touch screen. And the patient is alive, and only a little worse off for the experience.
I was held back for a week until I could get the right size torx screwdrivers to remove the back cover. Once inside, it was a very very tricky process slicing off the broken screen with a razor blade. It was glued to the lcd display. This would have been hard even if the screen was not shattered. Definitely needed goggles to protect against flying splinters of glass. I used cotton swabs and 99% alcohol to clean the glass dust off the glue around the edges of the lcd, then I put the new screen on while that residual gum was still a bit tacky.
There was a very thin existing plastic cover over the lcd in between the glass touch screen and the rest of the lcd. Since it did not come off with the glass, I left it in place even though it had a couple of small scratches from contact with the broken glass. It seems like it was there to keep dust off the lcd or something like that.
This was my first time inside the phone. I noticed that replacing the whole LCD component would have been a trivial task by comparision to replacing the glass alone. And even easier would have been adding a new battery.
cracked lcd on xda
hi, does anybody know where i can get a replacement for the lcd screen on my xda... its totally mashed and i need to unlock it but the screen is bad...

regards, monika
I replaced my touchscreen a few weeks ago. Like Lawrence said it's a little tricky and you need to be patient.
I bought my touchscreen from www.pdasmart.com/pdaphone.htm for $75 and they gave great instructions.
thank you for your kind answer
hmmm, seems like it is nice to live in US ... where all the things for XDA are almost readily available

Protective Acryclic Cover over the Digitizer
I have an odd problem. I have an SX56 with a broken protective cover. The protective cover is the acrylic sheet that sits between the digitizer and the outside world. Everything else works fine including the digitizer. I have found every replacement part except that cover. I've even tried local plastic stores. They don't carry the proper thickness (0.125mm).
Any thoughts or sources besides sending it in for a $200 repair?
Dropped my streak the other day and the screen is bleeding in the corner, still works perfectly but is annoying to say the least is this all I need to replace screen, and is it difficult? anyone done it before?

That looks like it.
Here is another vendor.
Here is a tutorial on doing the install. The guide can be downloaded as a pdf and in the thread are links to larger versions of the pics.

Congrats!! Tempted to break my screen to see how easy that is. Won't do it though. May buy a broken Streak from ebay to play.
It honestly is really easy, thought it was going to be a nightmare putting it back together, but its all made so well that there isn't any other way it can fit together. Was a bit scary when one of the motherboard clips flew off when trying to get it off and I couldn't find it, but after few minutes scouring the carpet I found it. But to be perfectly honest I could have put it back together without one of the motherboard clips, it was pretty secure.
I got problem to take off gorilla glass cos is stick by glue i think... should I use hair dryier to unstick it? or any other method?
You don't need to take the gorilla glass off, the whole thing comes out together, just use the prying tool to gradually pull it away from the casing
Job done, I didnt have my new screen yet but everthing is in piece now hehe one more question guys cos after the accident the screen was broken and touch didnt work at all in mine steak did might be a motherboard fault or digitizer ? ps. dell wasnt droped... was a bit bend , dell boots normally
No really sure, but the you get a new touch screen so guessing it would sort out your problem. Mine still work even though it was broke, so not defo sure to be honest.
I just had to replace mine again. I couls see the screen but only a small part of the screen would accept touching. New screen and all is good now.
I think you will be fine.

guys need help..i got the same problem with the lcd.so fragile, dropped not even 1 foot, and there's a black spot in my lcd.when i buy the lcd and the digitizer, does it comes with the gorilla glass???or just ordinary glass?
I am not sure what kind of glass the new LCDs come with. I will say that it is super smooth and I have yet to break the new glass and it seems to be fairly scratch resistant.
Is it gorilla glass, I cannot say.
yay had broken screen all fixed now wow that was nail biteing lol
replaced mine twice - very easy once you do it the first time - follow the ifixit video and go step by step.....second time - i did not even bother with the videa - its that simple really
I dropped my streak from about 2ft and the glass didn't shatter but the LCD was a mess
Just waiting for my new lcd/digitizer/glass to be delivered from ebay. I've already stripped my streak down ready. Not sure what to use to re-stick the glass to the main frame though. Any suggestions?

The glass to the mainframe just goes and stays in place with their respective clips - I did not use any. just used normal stick glue for the side bezels - have had no issues so far.
Hey guy Please update another vender?
Hi guys,
So my mum dropped the Optimus Black that I bought her and it has cracked on the front - can someone on here please tell me how I would check whether it is only the front glass screen that needs replaced or the actual entire LCD? I'm very n00bish when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks all
Ok, I'm pretttty sure it's only the outer glass screen that's shattered and the actual LCD is fine.
Ordered a replacement part online, will update you all on how difficult it is to replace .
can you tell me where you ordered it ? I'm looking that too
Damn that sucks

if the screen is still running, I am pretty sure it is just the upper layer of the LCD screen.

I changed the digitizer of my previous phone, the Galaxy Spica, and the digitizer was glued to the outer rim of the LCD so i had to use force to get them apart.
Br,

My friend's p990 also had a scratch on his screen
seems this gorrilla is just a chimp
Pretty sure it's not "titanium glass", just hardened glass, so don't expect it to be invulnerable. Get a screen protector, don't put your phone in with keys, coins, or anything else with sharp edges, and don't drop your phone this should keep it nice and shiny for a long time.
I once cracked my screen of Desire HD... Before buying anything, be 100% sure whether the top glass is mounted onto the LCD below; or glued to it with some sort of special chemical.
When I broke my DHD screen; I bought only the upper glass part from Ebay. But turned it, the top glass part was glued to the LCD. So I had to buy the LCD and glass part together...

but the "advertisement" on u-thub says differently
does anyone has a how to for dissasembling the phone?
the screen is scratch resistant. personally tried and tested using a sharp knife. i still use a screen protector, though, because we can never tell! i guess gorilla glass is still glass. it's just scratch and impact resistant, as seen on youtube.
This happened to me too the other day. The phone slipped out of my hand and onto a rather soft vinyl floor. Screen is now cracked all over, but working.
As it seems no-one here has been able to replace the screen themselves with ebay replacement glass (probably plastic anyway), I'll just throw my OB in the trash, and gladly so, because of LG's broken promises to update the phone. Thinking back, I might even have had a smirk on my face when I realized what had happened. At least now I have an excuse to get the Galaxy Nexus or some other phone from a decent, self-respecting company, and finally be at peace with the phone I own. With the OB I could feel a bit of frustration every time I used it. Frustration (or pity really) is something I also felt when I checked this forum, since the mods kept closing all the GB-related threads for no apparent reason other than to demonstrate their power.
Without LG, life will indeed be good
"the screen is scratch resistant" - well i made a scratch by simply cleaning the screen with some textil made for cleaning glasses

The glass would need to be capacitive touchscreen capable I think?
Would be interesting/good if that is true.
Samsung service centre told me before that the original amoled screen, touch panel and glass comes as a single unit/ part.
Hope you are right.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The capacitive touch panel IS the glass. You cannot order any glass and place it on top of the screen. You need a touch panel, and yes, they come as an assy with the screen.
For 100% You will need a touch panel.
i still have the touch on the screen and am still able to use the phone i know its a oem screen from samsung as the screen was new when got it from shop ... funny how people jump the gun and think that somethink that (cant be done ) can be done im happy to go on fb ring txt and everything else on this phone with the glass OFF!!! and is 100% useable can even upload a video to youtube and will show you lot wrong hahaha whos larfing now ..... my ass you need to go out and buy the whole lot ... no you dont as i have showen you . the way i found out was i had a old samsung i9000 and it was busted to hell . so had a go at taking the screen away from the bk and saw that you have the screen then touch panel glued together then the touch to the glass so i fort with my working i9000 (with cracked glass only) i start tapping away from the front and there you have it . it started to work and then atm to stop me from scraching the touch sheet coz its not glass its like a soft plastic i am using a screen guard and its working a charm .... show me wrong people but im sat here with the glass off my phone and phone still working . i give this job a 9/10 on hardness tho so good luck
glass can be replaced pic shows touch still on screen
in this pic i have showen were the touch ribbon is still on to the touch screen as people still dont believe me that this can be done lmao

hi, if anyone is still interested. this is really pssible, ive separated the outer glass 5 min ago. used a thin sheet of plastic and the heat of a hair dryer. it took me an hour to do so
The glass would need to be capacitive touchscreen
Funny how people can't seem to be able to read.
He's PROVEN separate glass to be the case, it's not a question.
Now whether or not a new glass can be fitted onto the old capacitive layer just like that remains to be seen...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
i can CONFIRM, that the outer Gorilla glass is just a tempered glass thats glued to lcd/digitizer assebly with transparent silicone-like glue. the touchscreen works 100% fine without the gorilla glass. ive ordered the replacement for outer glass and will report back when i get it and if it works right with some video footage. unfortunately i wil have to wait for it for about 3 week, because its located in china
Did the new glass worked?
Hello there, since I recently got my glass look like a willow tree at the late autumn (dropped my Galaxy S and the glass is all cracked up) but the touchscreen is still intact and fully operational and working flawlessly I am interested on your progress to know if it's possible to fix just the glass and to get eventual information on how you did it if you succeeded with replacing just the glass, info on where you got a new glass and stuff would also be much appreciated in case your homemade repair worked. Thanks in advance.
Any news? The ten days should be over now....
Same problem
Any news? I have the same problem.

IT IS POSSIBLE... but i have failed
Last days i have finally try to change only the glass on my i9000. No success, but i was very close.
After i have clean the remaining glue from the glass that i buy i have follow the steps from the youtube video from post before. I mention that S3 glass seems to be more flexible and the glue a little more soft.
I have warm up the display surface but not to warm (after i remove the main-board and other).
After i have started to take the glass piece by piece with my swiss multi knife (big mistake)
I have proceed with careful until i have started to be more and more sure at me, and, as you can imagine i have make the big mistake - broke the display.
I don't know if in glass removing process or when i have try to remove the remaining glue with a microfiber tissue i have press a little to hard and i broke the display (a little rift).
I have failed but i am sure if you have patience and more appropriate tool you can succeed.
Please take in calculus that without the glue between the two parts the screen is more reflexive and the contrast is not like before. There is no electrical connection between the touch and the display.
Now the touch under the rift on the screen is not working anymore and the phone is almost useless. The top part of display is working perfect!
Sorry for my english and here is some pictures:
Nice
hii people i need some help here i have bought a samsung galaxy s with a broken screen glass thinking it would be cheap and easy to replace just the glass, and i have bought the glass from ebay and can tear down the phone but i dont know what to do when i get to the screen how do i seperate it and is their a touch layer under their or what and if anyone could suggest any good tutorials or pictures to help me understand then that would be great because it is not as easy as it seems lol :/ and please dont suggest that i buy a new screen all together because i do not have enough money and i might aswell buy a new phone for the price of an AMOLED lol thnx and plz feel free to PM me
You're wrong from the very beginning
The hardest part to separate in the Galaxy S is the AMOLED screen and the gorilla glass
because they are strongly attached together. It would be very hard if not impossible to separate them without damaging the AMOLED screen
i had this problem but there is help .. i for one done it the hard way and cracked the glass more on the screen very hard to do .. then picked it away with a very small metal pick . look at one of my posts its on here and trust me can be done and then it gets a bit harder putting new glass back on as one the touch dont work right but dw that can be sorted first buy a really thin screen protector then lay that on then lay the new glass over that and touch works fine .. hope this helps but there is a high level of one skill and to a real big risk of fakin up ur screen when picking away at it ..
thnx thats gave me allot more confidence and hope in doing this and succeeding thnx u have inspired me to actually attempt it and i myt aswell because if it works then iv done it the cheep option and if i dont try il never know if the cheap option is possible and achieveable and could uu post a link of your thread please so i can read it much thnx

I'm in your same situation, and the solution that daleford2k10 proposes sounds great.
But I have some questions to ask you:
1) Where did u get the glass replacement?
2) What about the touch buttons (menu and back)? Because as I have seen in some disassembling videos they are strong glued. It is possible to get out (or break) the glass above them?
3) Did u tried with a hair-dryer first?
Thanks for your help

iv not tried anything yet as the hair dryer is concerned i got my glass from ebay
www (dot) ebay (dot) co (dot) uk/itm/Front-Glass-Lens-LCD-and-touch-screen-not-included-Samsung-Galaxy-S-i9000-/170739151176?pt=UK_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item27c0d8b148#ht_2226wt_1270[/url]
but i dont know if you are a uk resident but you can get it from Hong Kong too and im taking it easy asin trying to get as much info as possible first to do this before i do it oh and i dont think the buttons will cause that much of a problem and anyway if they do break but the screen doesn't its still a win as the buttons would only cost abit and i have also seen some disassembly videos but none separating the glass if you have could you post a link thnx
Finally I got the glass from ebay (the same one as the guy of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21224865&postcount=238), but delivered from Hong Kong.
I haven't been able to find any videos of this neither... But as both jondale and devonblue4u say, I think it would be just a question of patience and being careful.
Good luck! As I think you will receive your glass first than me (it's going to take around 15 days according to the seller), please post some photos or videos once u do it.
success?
i am about to buy a SGS 1 smashed, but any of you two guys succeed in replacing the glass ONLY? i know i have just bought a dead thread back lol but sorry need to know. thanks
I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that it was done successfully once, but the person who did it had access to the glue used for sticking the screen to the glass, so he wasn't normal by any means. My suggestion? Suck it up and get both the screen and the display. The glass was not meant to be replaceable on its own.
I'm in the process of replacing mine. You can get the glass separated from the amoled using lots of patience,a heat gun, and very thin plastic of some sort. I used a variety of things including a business card, credit card and a very thin steel flat mrasuring tool. The key is heat and moving slowly. Lots of videos on youtube. when you are done there will be lots of glue on the screen, but it comes off by carefully rubbing it. Also, as crazy as it sounds wd40 gets rid of the rest. Saw this on youtube and was skeptical, but tried it and it worked. Cleaned the amoled with rubbing alcohol afterwards. I'm currently using my S with just the amoled while I wait for the new glass too arrive. Also, with the new glass, you won't put glue on the amoled, but around the outsides - again, youtube is yourfriend.
