First to check if you have root, you can use the root validator application.
1. If no then you can check this thread for rooting procedures and requirements.
2. CF root is a close to stock kernel with minimal requirements for superuser.
3. Still we have not got the emmc bug removed in stock so a stock ICS kernel is definitely not safe. All CM9 kernels and Kernels like SpeedMod, Notecore have the bug disabled, so they are SAFE.
I don't know chinese related things so i guess i won't be able to give you an answer for your last question.

You do not need to root or unroot the device to update the firmware.
Please ensure that KIES is closed and not running in the system tray! Kies doesn't like Odin, it's like the big brother who's always jealous that his little brother is getting to flash all the phones so he starts to flash block.
Regarding change logs. Samsung thinks firmware should be like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get and that all a big part of the surprise user experience program so they don't publish any change logs.
Odin is a tool unofficial,.
The installation of an original firmware via odin does not invalidate the warranty.
The installation of a firmware via odin does not entail the loss of the data inside the phone.
It is recommended in every case to make backups.
Get Odin v3.04 from here: Download here ; https://androidfirmwares.net/Tools/Download/8
Just extract the Odin folder.
You will also need to install the Samsung USB drivers for the device if you haven't installed KIES. Get them from here: https://androidfirmwares.net/Tools/Download/9
Just install like any Windows program.....
Root permissions or root privileges are obtained by performing a process called routing and grant the user the ability to take advantage of specific parts of the operating system, in our case of Android, which would not otherwise be accessible.
Thanks to this process so we can use applications that leverage, more profoundly, the operating system and offer customizations and features in more than a telephone that does not have enabled root permissions. Superuser is an application that is usually included in mod ROM (for example CyanogenMod) is basically manages root permissions by opening a pop-up whenever a application request is made, in such a way as to decide if grants or less allowed to, and lists all the applications for which we have given access to root permissions.
The recovery of an Android phone is a particular feature that you can activate before the boot (i.e. , before the start) of the operating system and allows you to perform a number of specific operations, including: hard reset and firmware upgrade. Let's start by saying that the root is not a "thing" as the jailbreak and not a task to perform. On linux platform is the root administrator user who has the highest privileges in the system (such as the Windows Administrator user to understand each other). The root then you do not get, but instead get its permissions. The root permissions allow you to do anything with your system. Limited only by your imagination. We can access the system files, delete them, edit them, replace them.(root explorer), Change the frequency of the processor , Back up applications (including system) even with their data. Or remove the applications already installed, on the device.(titanium backup), partialroot that is permitted without the recovery and icon superuser with root explorer can not to heave reading/writing in to system / app .
The recovery of an Android phone is a particular feature that you can activate before the boot (i.e. , before the start) of the operating system and allows you to perform a number of specific operations, including: hard reset and firmware upgrade.
The original recovery or stock recovery is the one which is pre-installed on our Android phone at the time of purchase.
The custom recovery is a particular feature that in addition to the operations of the recovery original, allows you to install custom rom firmware (modified) as the CyanogenMod and install various hacks.
READ THIS GUIDE FOR ROOT AND RECOVERY; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You can flash a stock pre-rooted ROM using PC-ODIN from here . This will give you root as well as CWM-recovery.

eh..jusst download Odin, use those 4.0.3 n im done?
You are currently running Gingerbread so you cannot use the ICS files for root.
You have two options
1. Flash a directly rootable stock firmware from here and use this to root the phone.
2. Or flash the pre-rooted one from here.

What would be in your idea (your suggestions) for keeping HTC One M7 updated with the latest OTAs? while keeping it rooted?
I do not change ROMs or else. I just require root to be able to run some apps (e.g. droidwall). I like to keep my phone updated regularly with the OTA updates. What would be the best strategy to do so?
for example:
a) getting a stock recovery for the phone.
unlocking bootloader, custom recovery, rooting, (s-on).
then whenever an OTA is announced, backing up phone with adb,
flashing with stock recovery,
updating OTA
restore app and data backup
b) unlocking bootloader, custom recovery, rooting, (s-on).
then whenever an OTA is announced, waiting for some time, so that OTA will be available for download as zip file from forums.
when the OTA zip file is available for download, back up phone with adb,
Install update from OTA file (how?)
restore app and data backup
c) ??
Please let us know what you think. what are your solutions. if a or b are feasible? how? any better strategy?

Best strategy is to ignore carrier updates completely
your at XDA we have releases sometimes months before the carrier gets around to it. Just pick a custom rom you like and follow it. MaximusHD / ARHD / Insertcoin / ViperOne are always far ahead of any OTA package and already rooted / with numerous tweaks
migrating to custom ROM

My previous android was not very popular so there was very few ROMs for it. and all of them had silly problems with camera, screen etc. I guess you can say I had bad experience with custom ROMs.
So these custom ROMs you mentioned, would have all of the original apps and functions as well (not bloatapp of course, but apps like HTC Sense, and blink feed option, zoe camera, and animated photos. etc) ?
CanI backup my apps and data from current stock rom, and after flashing a custom ROM I restore them there? or it won't work?
What I should use to back up? adb backup command from usb debugging mode, or titanium backup app?
what are the most popular custom ROMS most affine to stock ROM and most stable (I know it is subjective, just asking to know your opinions).
thanks

my backup strategy when using custom roms is
copy sdcard to PC (everything)
I use HTC Backup ..it saves my contacts / messages / app settings and folder / desktop layout.
The roms I listed above are the only ones I use, their all mostly stock, Sense based roms

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
It has been over a year since I last flashed a S4A phone, so refreshing my notes and hoping someone can confirm the bits below are correct.
In case another, shorter way to accomplish same exists, kindly suggest it.
Background first.
Phone is SG4 Active, running Android 4.4.2. Baseband I537UCUCNH3, model is Samsung SGH I537, Build KOT49H.I537UCUCNH3
Phone is unlocked and was flashed with Odin one year ago to 4.3 and then ATT updated automatically to current version.
Status today.
When ATT offers download and install the 900 plus MB 5.0.1 update, it fails at 27 percent, reboots phone, repeatedly.
Phone has about 8 GB free space on internal memory and about 10 GB on SD card. As far as I can determine, no special mods have been done to phone and I have uninstalled all user installed apps so it has only ATT, Samsung and Google apps.
Proposed solution.
Found the original I537UCUBML2 bundle *2gb* (Android 4.3) with BL,AP,CSC,CP and I think that since Bootloader already installed, it should be possible to run Odin again and just flash AP,CSC and CP.
Once flashed the system will be back to 4.3 and the OTA updates should work, first to 4.4 and later to 5.0.1.
Can not recall right now just how to do the Odin flash but will use search to figure it out but is my thinking correct or am I missing something important ? For example, don't remember if I have to reboot phone first or if Odin handles it all once the USB cable is connected.
Thank you.

ML2 won't help you. If you give me about 5-10 minutes I'll link you to the file you need (I'm slow because I'm on mobile and it's a tiny screen for my fat fingers lol)
---------- Post added at 02:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:37 PM ----------
OK here is the file you need. Download and save it to your EXTERNAL SD card (internal storage won't work) and flash the file in stock recovery. You can boot to recovery by shutting the phone off, then holding down power and vol+simultaneously
If you want to be rooted, don't do this, I can point you to a different method
Ok, downloading. Now, in case this "manual method" also fails at 27 percent and just reboots with Install failed, what then ? That was the original reason I proposed to use Odin re-flash the SG4A back to some semblance of original state. Thank you.

Use Odin to restore NE3 kit kat instead of ML2. I can link to that too if you need
NE3 kit kat
You have to extract all 4 tar files and flash all 4 with Odin simultaneously

The reason your install is failing is because you've modified the stock firmware. When you try to install an AT&T update, manually or automatically there is a script in that update that checks all the files on your phone to ensure that they are the original, unmodified files. If any single one of them is not original or modified, then the update will fail as you have experienced. So if you root your phone you are modifying system files. Even if you unroot, the system files were still modified at one point and the update will fail. I suspect you've done something like this.
The only way you can update to stock OC6 (5.0.1) is to flash your phone back to stock firmware and in your case it should be NE3. As has been explained you will need to flash the NE3 Odin package, but beware this will completely wipe your phone so backup anything you don't want to lose. There is a method for updating your phone without flashing back to stock described in this thread. Also, if you're ever looking for information on rooting and updating your phone it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the links in the i537 Firmware Guide.
Use Odin to restore NE3 kit kat instead of ML2.

Got it. Downloading (as suspected, the update.zip failed) and will hook up cable and run Odin 3.09 with all 4 files
All important data is backed up to Google so unless I lose some ATT settings, such as the IMEI code or similar, all should be well
Does the phone have to be in recovery mode before starting Odin ? Can't remember now and all Youtube videos show only AP being applied, not all 4 files simultaneously.
Edit, read http://www.samsungodindownload.com/odin-tutorial/
Thank you

I decided to create a Thread because there were to many people asking how to Install a Custom ROM using the engineered bootloader and not tripping knox. (I Will not provide links to the Bootloader i already provided the MD5 number to compare so search on google)
I used to have Rapture 2.0 that is based on COF8(I UPDATED to Rapture 2.1 Have wificalling but didn't have time to UPLOAD pictures because i changed to XtreStolite 2.2) and i still have this method. KNOX 0x000.
I don't own any of this files, i just recompiled from the forum. All thanks to the developers and their respective work. (Aou's, g.lewarne and iB4STiD and Others). I REPEAT i don't own any of the files so don't ask for files if they get removed.
Flash it at your own Risk, I am not responsible if you damage your phone or don't follow instructions. Just tested on 920T and 925T tmobile variant and it works. YOU MUST use the engineer bootloader or you will trip knox. Fingerprint and Miracast not working.

I used this Method:
DOWNLOAD These first:
Download ODIN3 3.10.6 from Here
Download Samsung USB Drivers from HERE
IF you are on 5.0.2 AOCG you must first UPDATE to COF6 from here and not FULL COF8 so you can get back to COF6 if needed. COF8 have more benefits but you still don't know.
STEPS:
1. OPEN ODIN and select AP and choose the 5.1.1 COF6 mentioned before.(Make sure RE-Partition is not selected in options. ONLY Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time) Wait until it verify.
2. Click on START and wait until your PHONE reboot(Never turn it off before it finishes)
3. After phone reboot continue bellow.
Before you do this make sure to ENABLE OEM Unlocking ON, on the Developer Options. (To enable Developer Options, go to Settings/About Device and After tapping the build number 7+ times, you will be notified you are a developer and the option will be there Settings/Developer Options)
1. Flash sboot.bin for you model. (Odin Select BL) Search on Google
S6 920T MD5: 6F8D0372CDF94A5B95B8034B7641E132
S6 925T MD5: 528F23A8138BF6570D1BAE0857B916E4
2. Flash Latest Unikernel from here (AP Odin , To give SE permisive) (Thanks to g.lewarne) Have the In Audio call fixed.
3. Odin-flashable TWRP recovery that Aou's put together (AP Odin) (Original Thread Here) (Thanks to Aou's)
4. Make a full Backup on TWRP just in Case. (Beware Touch screen will be Inverted on TWRP)(Right is left and left is right)
5. Go to REBOOT on TWRP and select DOWNLOAD , Open ODIN Select CP and Flash the G920T_UVU2COF8_BASEBAND.tar.md5. (Original Thread here) (Thanks to iB4STiD)
6. Go into TWRP WIPE/Advance WIPE and select dalvik cache, cache, data, system r/w (DON'T Select Internal Storage) Swipe to wipe.
7. Install Rapture 2.1 from Here. (Original Thread here) (Thanks to iB4STiD)
8. WIPE, Swipe Factory Reset
9. Wait 5-10 minutes first boot.
10. MAKE SURE to ENABLE AGAIN OEM Unlocking like you did the first time before you started the process so you don't have a problem later on with FRP LOCK.
11. ENJOY !!
It is recommended to Charge your phone to 100% and use a Battery Calibration, Restart your phone wait until it boots and remove the charger. Let it discharge until it turns off. Charge it again without interruption up to 100% and remove the charger and use it normally so the battery and system adapts.
In case of any problems you can Wipe and Restore from TWRP or ODIN STOCK 5.1.1 COF8 from HERE to fix any problems.
If you are on firmware COF6 with ONLY COF8 MODEM use the COF6 Odin from here.

Did you flashed the Unikernel or Unistock latest? If not that is the audio problem.Yes it works with any released Custom rom. Currently i am using latest XtreStoLite Deo-Mod Edition 2.2 [478MB ○ BOGG](Thanks to edgarf18) and if you care for wifi calling xtrestolie doesnt have it. But you can install talkatone(example) can be any app that give you a US number and call fowarding to it when you dont have signal and have wifi and works the same.
Remember sboot or engi bootloader is for 920t or 925t.

Nop there is no way. I am currently making a hybrid custom rom sometimes it works and sometime cratches... The problem lies in the bootloader invoking it a little diferent because its a 5.0.2 bootloader.
[MY SCREEN IS OPPOSITE] I may have installed something for the Edge variant, although I got lost in trying to get back to stock, which I currently am back at. (5.1.1)
So.... hoping this gets seen, I might xpost over to another thread, but here it goes.....
Notes: 5.1.1
920T model
Ultimately I am trying to get Alliance on my S6 (920T), and no I don't care if the know counter gets tripped (*spoiler* already done)
I started trying to get root for alliance ROM, and got the samsung splash lock after using odin to root. After re-loading the 5.1.1 firmware everything was working again, so I tried this *example* thread on how to install alliance again. After following things around and now have bizzaro phone, to where the opposite sides of the screen need to be pressed for the corresponding action, I am looking for help.....
What about aroma installer roms, can I flash them using this method without tripping the Knox counter?
So I'm all good running a custom ROM with Knox untripped, if I want to flash a different ROM I can just flash normally in twrp and it won't trip Knox?

If you need call audio or fingerprint scanner working just flash back to the stock F8 bootloader. You can always reflash to the engineering bootloader to flash more things down the line.
Edit: My mistake, seems this is not possible without tripping it.

Just to make sure i am understanding right - after step 11, i can flash back a stock COF6/8 bootloader, and retain everything (root, custom ROM, etc) without tripping knox, so long as i dont try to flash anything further? I value my fingerprint scanner, and would love to not lose it and knox if at all possible. For future flashing, go back to the eng bootloader, flash, and then reflash the stock again?
If u flash Stock bootloader it will trip knox.
For the screen problem make sure you have unikernel v6.0001. If it doesnt work maybe you have the Aou twrp. Find the Twrp that is for 920t variant. If not fixed try *#2663# and select TSP FW UPDATE AND IT WILL get fixed.
Call audio gets fixed with unikernel... v6.0001
It will work for unified and 920/5t custom roms. I have tried them all and knox still 0x000 never flash stock bootloader with anything that is custom
... or u will trip knox.
Well, thats a bummer, but i figured as much; if it was as simple as flashing back, i figured people would have been doing it.
Still, thank you for the excellent guide. Followed it on my rooted 5.0.2, and everything worked as advertised. Have root, knox, and only fingerprint reader of course is busted (no huge loss)..
is this verified to work with COH8 without tripping KNOX?

Might be worth tagging title with Windows, save those of us not using redmonds OS.
I'm not responsible for any damage on your phone. Do it at your own risk. Don't come angry or get mad at me, because I'll totally ignore them. I'm just trying to help, if you think this is dangerous for your phone or not worth it, please do back down.
If my thread here is a duplicate, then please feel free to report it so it would be brought down.
I don't own this device, It was my friends device, and I just messed around with it because he bootlooped the phone by doing things without understanding'em. After getting frustrated over and over, suddenly an idea dawned inside my head to do 'what you're about to do' to your phone. This thread here is just to help other ZE500KG users that are as frustrated as I am (was). I didn't find any guide to unlock the ZE500KG here so I decided to do one. If anyone wants to redo this guide, feel free to do it! I'm just here to help even if with very limited knowledge and resources.
First of all, before reading or doing this guide, I'd like to give you a small note, I WON'T BE GIVING LINKS OF THE FILES ITSELF, please search them yourself, you've got google and the threads here (another reason why I'm not giving you links of the files is because my external HDD got corrupted and I lost nearly every file there is for the Z00RD). Plus I did this unlocking like 8-6 months ago, in frustration, so I've forgotten lots of things about the Z00RD.
Now I'd like to explain whats about to happen:
As you guys might know, the only official bootloader unlocking is only available for the Z00ED. What you are about to do is tricking the Z00RD as if it was Z00ED by flashing the Z00ED's stock recovery and flashing stock rom of Z00ED to Z00RD (I hope some users can automatically get the idea of what to do after reading this). After it boots just download the official unlock tool for Z00ED and unlock it. How is this possible? Currently Z00RD (ZE500KG) & Z00ED (ZE500KL) are siblings. They're using the same hardware inside, the only difference is in the camera and modem. So theoretically we can flash ROMs of Z00ED to Z00RD.
Prerequisites:
First of all, please download the respective stock recoveries of Z00ED as per current OS version. Search for them. There is a link somewhere in the forums, just try searching for it. If you're on Lollipop, download the LP stock recovery of Z00ED (ZE500KL) and if you're on Marshmallow download the MM stock recovery Z00ED. Technically this it's just upgrading to latest stock MM ROM.
Download the final stock rom for Z00ED in ASUS's Official Website
Download the official unlock tool for Z00ED that is in the ASUS Official Website too
Optional:
Download stock recovery and stock ROM of ZE500KG and after the unlocking process is finished try reverting back to stock ROM with stock recovery of ZE500KG <- Just incase you are afraid something will go wrong and don't know how to edit build.prop-s to change your device type.
MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT YOU UNDERSTAND & KNOW HOW TO USE ADB & FASTBOOT COMMANDS! I won't be helping you with this, because I'm pretty sure if you're here on XDA, it means you've done some research and pretty much have the knowledge to use the commands.
Okay lets get started:
Move the downloaded stock rom of Z00ED to your phone (I forgot if it has to be renamed and forgot if it has to be in internal or can be put to external) or you could just skip this and later on uise ADB commands to sideload the file.
Boot to fastboot mode / bootloader
Flash the stock recovery via fastboot
Boot to stock recovery that can be done via fastboot command 'fastboot boot' or manually doing it (I forgot the combinations, I'm pretty sure you guys have this covered)
Once it boots to recovery, install the stock rom of Z00ED that has been downloaded (I'd prefer using adb sideload, but it's up to you guys)
You don't have to wipe data, because if you're on MM the data will stay, if you came from LP, it'll be migrated.
Reboot the device and after it wait until it finishes booting (If you're lucky nothing would go wrong in this step)
After it finishes booting, just install the official unlock bootloader app that you've downloaded, open the app and follow the instructions.
Voila device will reboot and you've (somehow) officially unlocked the bootloader of ZE500KG! You're free to flash custom recoveries, custom roms and blablabla without any restriction!
This last step is optional:
If you're planning on sticking with stock ROM, I suggest you to revert back to ZE500KG stock ROM. I don't know if this is a must or optional, but for safety measures I did this to my friends phone.
Notes:
If you've tried rooting this phone via hotbooting a custom kernel (boot.img) that you've found in the threads here (Sorry if I'm not mentioning any names here) and have the fastboot error in every reboot, this will fix it, but if you plan on sticking with stock rom, you won't be able to flash SuperSU in it, because the su binaries will be occupied. On the other hand, MagiskSU works flawlessly.
If somehow this guide doesn't work for you, Try to do other things, or flash other stock recoveries of different stock rom releases of Z00ED. At least you've got the idea on how it works.
If nothing works for you, maybe you're just unlucky, because as usual, ASUS ships different variants of it's phone that may prove to be incompatible with my guide.
There you go! Happy unlocking! Sorry if my post was semi "TL : DR" or I don't reply your posts ASAP, I'm not always online on XDA. Just try your luck and give it a shot! Trial and error is bound to happen when you're dealing with Android phones. Good luck!
Lucky enough my friend sent me some screenies. If this isn't enough, I'll ask him to make a video to see his unlocked status and device type.
