I was wondering if rooting your tablet using Z4root is the same as rooting using odin? Also if rooting this way is fine, what steps can I take to flash from my crappy froyo to a custom ics rom and which in youre opinion goes well with this tablet? Thanks fellas!

Restock to overcome.
There are plenty of threads where I responded to T849 (I own one)
Just search.
Edit: here you go

BTW: rooting isnt equal installing custom ROM. In fact they are mutually exclusive.
And to install custom rom you will likely need CWM Recovery, and the easiest and sure method to do is by following Overcome method.

I read and reread the overcome step by step on flashing to gingerbread.
I am curious if instead of proceeding to flash the overcome rom I decide to try out the stock gingerbread first.
If I get to the step after flashing the stock gb (step 7 in the overcome step by step) wherein I wipe/factory reset will I get a usable tab, gingerbread problems notwithstanding? That is the step where the setup screen.
Yes you can flash the stock rom without flashing the overcome rom.

Thanks... I was about to ask the same question.

Edit : nevermind what I said. I saw that you can flash the euro rom on a p1000t.

Thanks for the warning. I also just got an email from a friend in Oz with exactly same model as me. He said it flashed no problem with euro stock gingerbread. He also reports that everything is working & it generally seems much more responsive.

Thanks for your reply. Tried the stock rom, seems ok but then what the heck I
flashed the overcome rom (rc1)i. I am enjoyin the new overcome now~!
I have just aquired an sgs i9000 (£259.95 from uk carephone warehouse) and am finding things a little different after using an htc desire for the last year.
After poking around the forum, i have managed to install I9000XXJVP 2.3.4 gingerbread using odin.
My question is, is it possible for me to now install speedmod-kernel-k15h-t12-300hz using odin to gain root access or have i misread the situation?
Sorry if this sounds a bit noobish but, if the above is correct, will i lose all of my apps and settings if doing so?
Advice would be much appreciated.
If you flash a kernel you won't loose any data.

Thanks for your reply.
So can i simply flash the kernel that i mentioned on my stock 2.3.4 or is there something else to do first and if yes, does this automatically give me root?
Sorry to be a noob, but i am new to these procedures and it all seems too simple to me!
It will give you root, yes.
But I'm not quite sure if this kernel fits for JVP...

speedmod's kernel won't automatically root your phone but you can root it once you've flashed it via the option in recovery mode.
but i agree you should check that it is compatible with JVH; i'm on KC1 so not too sure.
i mean JVP!
There should be a CF-Root version for JVP too, thod kernel is as stock as possible but gives you root.

Hi all,
I own a Galaxy Tab P1000 bought in UK and not sim locked.
I bought it in Carphone Warehouse.
Now I wonder if I can install ICS on my Tab.
I know nothing about kernels in general so please do not come up with install this kernel, that kernel.
I have a stock 2.3.3 ROM updated via Kies and I rooted it.
I just want to keep all my features working on my Tab (camera, data, voice and so on) after the upgrade so I am not interested if some stuff is not working.
If these requirements are met I wish you could come up with an upgrade procedure for dummies with the link to all files needed.
Again I know nothing about kernels so please try to explain what I am gonna do.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Federico.
Well, too bad.
Samsung won't make ICS for this tab, so no L
kies update for you.
And yeah, we all will tell you to install a kernel+cwm to flash it.
And no spoon feeding either...
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.
Links are easy to find in their individual thread.
Come back here after you have overcome rom, come back here and I am willing to guide you further.

The 2 roms you are talking about have all features working?

Camera, data, voice call
Yes, both cm9 and AOKP can do that.

I am reading some information. It looks like there are stability problems with custom roms. Endless loops with one. Wifi disconnecting on the other. When I was using a sony ericsson x10 I used to install custom roms. Just all had bugs and I always went back to stock. Thing is that the tab is more complicated and I am not willing to brick it either.

P.S. Cwm is already installed on my tab. Just not the kernel.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
You need cwm 5.x to be successful I think.
Btw, gtab is quite hard to brick, as long as you didn't screw up the boot loader.

Steps should be to:
- Install GB-stock-safe-v5.zip (Odin) (I have 1.85 is that ok?)
- Install Overcome 4.0.0 Kernel (Odin) (I have 1.85 is that ok?)
- Install Overcome 4.1 ROM wipe (via CWM, should I use wipe or no wipe?)
Once I am done with that I can use CWM to install an ICS ROM if I wish.
I think I got this correctly didn't I?
Ok, I am now lost about which specific ROM to try. CM seems more stable but is there any specific release (more stable) that I should be looking for? Could anyone please link a post to a stable ICS CM release for my tab?
first of all thanks to all xda has always helped me
my captivate had installed CM 10 something happened and I had to flash with odin and return to a 2.3.3 rom now I want to go back to CM but I need help, I honestly do not know which I have bootloaders (sorry if this is a dumb question) is not as back to have CM on my phone please someone to tell me the link to a guide or tell me the steps.
If you were on CM10 before then you should already have the correct boot loaders. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 this is a good tutorial that has all the steps needed.

You flashed Gingerbread, therefore you must have gingerbread bootloaders.

Hi,
I am new to rooting and rooted my t-mobile tab sgh-t849 today using superoneclick. I am still at Android 2.2 and want to flash a an upgraded rom. Can I flash any ROM which is available for tab in this forum? If not, suggest me some roms. Also, let me know how to flash a rom. I have downloaded ODIN but don't know how to use it.
Yes you can flash any ROM that is for P1000.
You may want to start with overcome method put custom recovery into your tab. All custom roms are flashed from cwm recovery.
