Ive noticed great battery life also. seems like this thing never wants to die out. the Wifi signal is great yet it barely drains battery.
Tegra 3 in this thing rules. Smooth as butter and great battery.

I think its because theres no data connection. low data signal is a battery killer. where as we dont have this problem on the nexus 7..........well you guys dont. i dont have mine yet.
I was thinking the same thing...battery life is awesome

Can you please tell us what did you do for that 9 hours?
Web browsing mostly?
Music for how long?
Video as well?
And how about other settings like nfc, bluetooth, gps, are they on?
What about auto sync account and email?
Weather sync?
Widget?
Please tell us, that is certainly awesome

9 hours screen on was mostly Kindle app, bit of browsing, facebook, some youtube.
Bluetooth off, gps on when required (used Maps a couple of times)
Gmail push notifications
Android Pro Widgets (calendar, twitter, facebook) sync'ing every hour.
Contact Sync (for facebook contact sync'ing) every few hours.
I have to agree - battery life on this thing is phenominal. I use it all day at work for note taking and project management (whoa, using it for productivity, who would've thought?! haha) and keep it on auto brightness with bluetooth tethering to my phone. By the time I get home (well, the past two days at least) I've been above 55% battery life still. The only thing I've been able to do to absolutely kill the battery life is play 3D games, but even those can go on for many hours without a problem.

Ah. I have killed mine in like 5 hours but I played dead trigger, shadowgun, gta3 all while listening to my music in the cloud. I did underclock to 1.0ghz to keep the heat under control (don't blame the nexus the room I was in was 80+ degrees).

I don't use task killers but thanks for the tip. I kill them in multitask and settings > apps > running.
Interesting... I'm not finding standby life on mine to be all that great. I'm running at about 1.5-2.0%/hour on standby (with wifi on), compared to the .5%/hour or so I got with my Transformer Prime. And, just sitting there playing music I was burning somewhere between 5-10%/hour.
Not sure what's going on, but I wouldn't characterize battery life on mine as "awesome" so far...

Killing them in multitask is like a task killer but the second one is the way to go and if rooted use rom toolbox or auto starts manager to stop processes from running in the background.

This is a good device. I'm coming from iOS, so Android is new for me but the Nexus 7 is awesome. I only waited this long because pre-ICS I was afraid of fragmentation and went to the 'more stable' iPad 2. Now, I kind of regret that!
I have noticed a couple of things that trouble me, but it could just be me. Today I was running on the battery for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. I had played Dark Meadow, Duke Nukem 3D, Hanging with Friends, and setting up widgets on my home screen (I still haven't gotten used to what widgets on what home screen)..but it was already at 75% discharging (the wording seems odd but basically 25% of the battery already been used). I have the screen brightness down; and I do stream TWiT.tv through an app..and I get about 3-5 hours of battery life doing that. Is that normal?
BUT playing audio podcasts with screen locked, wifi off when it sleeps, etc i get 13 hours (yes, last night it clocked in at 13 hours 1 minute before battery died.)
I'm wondering this is normal. I do love the device though; so it may just be me being odd and worrying too much as i am new to Android
Overall, after selling my iPad 2, I'd give the Nexus 7 a 9/10. There needs to be more games I love (like hero academy, um..there were a couple I really loved on iOS that I loved but can't remember the names at all!) and at first I was having a hard time getting epub and pdf books onto the device, even using FBreader but I converted them to mobi and that's not a problem anymore.
Seriously, I love the device despite what Ithe issues I had--and they are my issues, not Google.
Some of those games you installed probably have some background service for ads or something, think of open feint and the like. Those services if not optimized for JB will drain your battery.
Auto brightness fr me and my battery is avg 8 hours with gaming, reading, Skype/googketalk video chatting.
Try to see if the games you have also have tegra versions usually marked by a THD in he title, they will wok better on this device.

I deleted most of the games if I don't like them, but I do make sure that they're THD 99.99% of the time. I also turned down my screen brightness. To give an idea. I just turned on F-Con's TWiT.tv app, with the brightness down..and it's at 68% discharging (I really wish they would have said 68% left or something) and it's been running for an 1 hour 45 minutes on the battery.
I'm really starting to think, and I posted this on G+, that I can't do ANYTHING with my device unless it's audio only and it's a little frustrating, but like I said, it's also probably just me being an idiot somewhere somehow. I really don't know what else to do to keep it from draining so fast (at least it feels fast) unless I keep it plugged into the charger when I'm streaming video. I know when I play games I like to go relax and lay down so I'm comfortable and I only stream video when I'm at my desk..so maybe just keeping it plugged in when doing that would be the best option.
It say "discharging" because that's exactly what it's doing. When plugged in, it says "charging".

Good point! I've tried not to charge it unless it's going dead.
I think my main problems
-I stream twit.tv while on battery (maybe I should plug it in?)
-I've watched video podcasts while on battery (Maybe I should plug it in or switch to audio?)
-I have the brightness turned up (I've tried turning it down but it gets too dark for my bad eye sight)
I mean the list of stuff I do is:
-Play casual games
-Try more 'intense' games like dead trigger, duke nukem 3d
-send an email/text message via the voice typing
-Use Google Now/Voice Activities
-tweet, facebook, g+
-Use Google Drive or Evernote because I'm a writer.
-watch twit.tv
The most intense thing I do are the games and twit.tv. But I can still get 6-7 hours even doing those two things. So the battery isn't horrible, it's just me being hypersensitive I'd imagine.

Thank you! I would never bash it because it's not iOS. They were, at one point, two different beasts. Now, they're starting to become..well not the same as they are very different but they are starting to do more of the same. Personally, I just got tired of that walled garden of Apple. With the nexus 7, I've already downloaded stuff from Amazon's app store, the play store, etc. the only thing I haven't done is gone to a developer directly and installed something.
Overall, I love the nexus 7. it's the perfect size for reading a book and for playing many games. Google Now is nice because I can check the Pirates or Steelers score or the score of their rivals.
I really do love this.
Got my N7 last night. Full charge overnight. Today I was on it constantly. I had almost 9 hours with almost 6 hours screen on time. This was playing FPse and xda and a few other games.
Facebook SUCKS on android. Their app has background crap that chews through the battery. Delete that crap and either use a Widget (Android Pro Widgets) or a 3rd party app or just use the browser. Not only will these alternatives work better, you'll also see tons of extra battery life.

I actually got, so far, doing everything that I would even with the streaming of the TWiT Network..I got 9 hours 48 minutes 18 seconds. Almost 10 hours doing what I normally do (play games, emails, txt, streaming video, etc) So I think the battery's starting to normalize to what I do (is that even possible? lol!)
Still 6+ hours doing all of that stuff, to me, is pretty dang good. I used to get about 4-5 hours on my iPad 2 doing all of that stuff.

Gaming drains the battery a good bit, it's as simple as that.
I've had no problem with the battery life, it isn't super long but it's more than sufficient... (I have the brightness jacked way up.)
Under Settings -> Accounts and Sync, be sure to disable Instant Upload. (Along with anything else that you don't need, but I've found Instant Upload to be a major battery culprit.)
If you root, you can get BetterBatteryStats for a more thorough analysis.

Except I'm not gaming 24/7, I'll play for 5 minutes, maybe 10 (only sometimes longer)
Like I said I'm checking email, playing say Hanging with Friends, Tiny Tower, etc. then sending a text message, or a tweet or a facebook update, or a google plus update then I'm watching a twt.tv video or the livestream when a show is on.
It can't be just the gaming. and like I said, it could just be me. Today, for example, even though I streamed twit.tv, played a couple of games and all the rest..I still got 10 hours.
I've turned off wifi when alseep, as an example. I turned off instant upload. stuff like that. I still average abotu 10 hours a day, it was just that one day I got about 5-6 hours. I'll give it a try Monday or Tuesday again. I'll do nothing but stream off of the app I have for TWiT and see if I can reproduce it but it looks like 10 hours is about average for me.
As I said, and I know I'm repeating myself, it could just be me being hypersensitive about a new device and a new OS.

I think that is why many of us expect a huge battery improvement after updating to JB ,perhaps the newer system wont be so power hungry.
these screenshots are fun and all but they are totaly irrelevant.
hoe much USE time are people gettng is whats interesting.
so screen on time.
as the goal is no drain with screen off and as long as possible screen on time (this is when you use apps and so on).
my phone can be on for 2 days and still hve 95% juice left but thats kinda irrelevant if i dont touch it.
when i use it non stop my use time averages on 4 hours and 15 minutes so far.
all the people having problems with battery drain must have either bad apps installed of verry poor wifi/3g connections.
as in a good serup with no bad apps and good signal wifi should not drain battery at all if your not using it.
i would so like all people with issue to lend me there phones for 3 days to see if in my stable envourement they have the same issues.
im fairly sure that all these problems are signal and user related and that it has nothing to do with the hardware.
My phone would only give me 2 hours max if the mobile data is on with sync off facebook sync set to 1 hour and hotmail sync set to 1 hours. But if wifi is on throughout the day i would get around 3 hours 15 min average with sync on hotmail set to push and facebook sync set to 1 hour. The battery is really poor as i only use it generally for txting whatsapp and just a bit browsing thats all nothing else. When i watch videos my phone consumes less battery, than normal usage which i do everyday. The highest screen time i have ever got was 4 hours 15 mins thatd because i watched a video for almost like 3 hours thats why. But the battery is still really poor

My android system also consumes a lot of power, its always on top no matter what. I am running on V_10H I disabled some stock apps using titanium backup and used fast demorcacy but the only difference I could see was android wakeups had been much lower thats all and so less power consumption when phone on standby thats all.

this is totally relevant information for regular users.
many people complain about battery drain and that a custom rom is the cause or custom kernel when its available, but what shows that it is not, is when you can place your handheld mobile or tablet alone with wifi set to instant off and you got 3g disabled and it lives for days without loss of battery, you know that it is stable.
when you suddenly lose battery in hours and previous tests showed it was lasting days, you can be sure you got battery infected apps trying to activate your cpu all the time.
i'd like to buy this phone but i'm a bit afaid of the battery drain. people who says it last 2 days with normal use other says that with gaming and browsing lasts 10-15h but a lot says that the battery lasts just 6 h with normal use... can someone who owns this phone and he use it with a middle-intense use (texting, browsing, gaming some time) tell me how much lasts the battery please??

Well, my usage pattern is kinda light, but still...
- took it off the charger at 7:15 am
- 3g data permanently on while I'm not at home (from 7:20 til 18:00 or 19:00)
- wifi on when I'm at home (during the night too, I never switch the phone off)
- sync always on (gmail, whatsapp)
- received a couple short phone calls, let's say 5-6 mins
- received a bunch of emails, say about 15 or something
- some messaging (on whatsapp and gtalk, I don't use sms)
- some facebook, let's say 15 minutes (through mobile website 'cause FB app sucks big time, always had and most probably always will)
- some net browsing looking for a few stuff, let's say 5-10 minutes
- checked a couple forums on tapatalk a couple times
- updated 3 or 4 apps on wifi
- downloaded a 50mb game on wifi and played it for like 10-15 minutes
- ebook reading on moon+ for 1 hour and 30 minutes (maybe even longer, didn't check the exact time)
I connected it to the charger when it reached 12% battery at about midnight THE NEXT DAY (yes, that is around 41 hours without recharging it)
Overall, I can say I'm satisfied, at least for my standard usage...
- Stock v10h firmware, no root (yet).
- Nova launcher since 5 minutes after buying it
- I usually keep brightness quite low unless I'm out in the open under the sun, good thing about this phone's screen is that it's usually very well visible even with only a 20% brightness. If I need to use it in full sunlight, I conveniently placed a full brightness widget on my homescreen, and then back to 20% with one click when I'm done. No autobrightness 'cause I don't like much how it's set to work on this phone (was kinda better on my old i9000, but oh well, 1 click widget and I'm good to go, no sweat)
- Disabled 3 or 4 stock apps (through app settings, no titanium or other stuff)
I noticed that battery usage was kinda higher before disabling those stock apps, I guess one of them was a powermonster of sorts (I suspect the meteo one, but I'm not sure)
- No facebook notifications of course, not for battery-related reasons but just 'cause I simply hate them... but I guess that's nice on the battery too
Guys is your battery life like mine? I'm impressed

Must admit I found a huge leap in battery life by disabling location services.
For instance Facebook app instantly tries to find a GPS signal even if it's disabled in the apps settings. GPS just gets overly used in my opinion by a lot of apps.
I feel I lose too much functionality by disabling GPS with things such as Google Now so I keep mine on.
Still I find on the whole the Nexus 4 battery life is at least on par with the iPhone 5 in terms of my average daily activity.
you may also enable developer options then disable the animations ^_^

One of many things that the Facebook app does poorly. Why does it want my location when I open the app. At least 50% of the time, I'm only looking at my news feed. If I want to post my location or check in, look for the location at that point. At the very least give me an option in the settings to turn this off!
I find battery life pretty good even with location services on. It'll go a full day without problems which is all I expect of a modern smartphone. I can do the things I want and unless I play a lot of games one day, I won't need to charge until night time.
Please use the battery impression thread. Finding it will be an exercise left to the OP

I dont do 3x a day but battery life is TERRIBLE compared to my SGS3 9300.
I charged it last night while watching a movie, and unplugged before going to bed when it was 100%
9h 45 mins later, the power was down to 2%
By far the main cause was 89% MEDIA:
media storage
Downloads
Drm protected content storage
Download manager
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
UNBELIEVABLY BAD!!!!
I am not sure why this is happening. I have conditioned by my battery by charging fully, letting it run flat 3x, then charging fully again and resetting battery stats in recovery mode.
I did have sync photos to Picasa ON, and the only other syncs were mail, calendar, contacts, facebook, g+ (not photos)
You guys who are only using 70% in a day, what syncing settings / homescreen widgets do you have?
I was on Stock ROM, Now on rXTREME v2.1, but Stock was just as bad.
tx
Mark.
battery life is short, but time to charge battery from 0 to 100 is terrible long (about 5 hours)!
You guys must have the Telstra One app installed, that thing wakes up your device like crazy
Seriously though install BetterBatteryStats and see what's doing the damage, after a day, 8 hours of which I'm in the passenger seat of a car listening to music, Facebook etc I have a good 48% left at 1am

I dont understand how anyone can charge their phone 3 times a day....
I get a good 16-17 hours with 2.5 hours of screen time..
I'm at 92% with 45 minutes of screen on time: on Facebook & SnapChat

Push notifications on for: messages, gmail, appygeek & SPlanner
Syncing: Set to "Only on WiFi" - Firefox, samy account, dropbox, google account
I have on auto-brightness turned down all the way
I stay on GSM 70% of the day. I also freeze things like BetterBatteryStats when I have no intent on using it & the facebook services

Hey there,
Tx for the info.
Im also on Pandoriam, but 4.5 at the moment.
I think the main cause of my battery use was a corrupt microSD because media was using 89% of the juice. Ive removed it and things seem better. Ive also removed HD Widgets from the home screen, I think they are particularly hungry too. Also removed Samsung Allshare from my PC as that kept on trying to connect to my phone, so that could have been an issue.
Holding thumbs I will be ok all day... now THAT will be a nice xmas present!
Cheers,
Mark

I read that some microSD cards are ridiculously hungry and I can say that Allshare destroyed my battery too so best of luck!
Have a merry Christmas Mark
I have a 64 gb class 10 also I charge every night once and I use the phone quite abit

Hey guys,
I have used lots of ROMs to see If they are related with battery life, but I am tired of poor battery.
As you can see below pic, is it normal to see draining from 100% > 9% within 21 hours while screen was ON for only 2.35 hours

Can you show us the 'Alarms' page?
The battery life for this is not very good, I was quite disappointed, I don't recommend this.
Hi I have recently purchased a 32gb nexus 7 and I have been having some issues with the battery since the 4.2.1 update, before this update I would get around a day on the battery no problem now I can't seem to get more than 16 hours at the most. My usage includes facebook at night for roughly 2 hours, moderate gaming during the day, and some web browsing in my spare time. All this was never a problem on 4.1 but in 4.2, the battery just seems redundant. I would like to hear your thoughts on your battery life on your nexus 7's thank you.

How much gaming is moderate?
I noticed my governor was on interactive tonight, which was maxing the CPU even just by touching the screen, I thought my battery life seemed quite good though.
Anyway, I changed my governor to ondemand, and noticed that simply touching the screen only moves the CPU freq to 3-500mhz.. Which is fine for browsing etc... I have also played games, and I haven't noticed any lags... yet... But if there is a really hungry game that I do start to notice a lag in, I'll just put it back to interactive for that game, and meantime I should have better battery life.
Like I said, I only just changed this, so I'm yet to see how much better my battery does, but just from looking at CPU freqs I'd say there's gotta be a decent difference.
There's an idea for an app for some dev... Per app governer setting...

I always had excellent battery life, no matter which android version.....
Do you use Google Currents? If not, stop the service and disable it completely.
Furthermore, please post a screenshot of your battery usage.

That's pretty damn impressive. How much screen on time is that?
On my second charge I got ~2.5d with about 4-5 hours of screen on (stock). More than satisfactory!

Looks like 0 screen on to me, device is sitting idle. Mine would last weeks from what I've seen in standby, but yeah, I use my Nexus 7...

Default governor is intended to max the CPU when you touch the screen, in fact it's an advertised feature for the Nexus 7. There could perhaps be a step up to a higher CPU then higher yet if needed, but the problem with that is you get jumpiness if you switch CPU speeds around when things are going on, like launcher swipes, games, etc.
Per-app governor is already easily done today in Tasker.
Aw man

Hell naw, just set it to only sink on charge
That means I update my articles in the morning and evening only, and whenever else I plug it in.

Thanks for that, I'll check it out. There is no performance loss when web browsing or similar tasks with the on demand, so I'll just use interactive for intensive games, and extend my battery a bit in that case.

Well, I'm now a happy guy.
Downloaded tasker. I now have my pad set on ondemand for browsing and light duties only with a 1ghz cap which I cannot tell any difference from stock clock,, and then when I launch any intensive games I have tasker automatically overclocking to 1.5Ghz, changing governor to interactive and closing some stuff letting my pad concentrate on the job in hand without me having to do a single thing. Then when I exit my game, tasker automatically clocks back down again and puts the governor back to ondemand.
I also have it automatically only use Sync if the battery is above 40%. I'm liking tasker, and these are only very simple uses for it, some of the example ones are really cool. @khaytsus Thanks again for telling me about it, wouldn't have known otherwise. Now I want to get more into it and seeing what it can really do using the variables etc, and the appmaker.
Another thing about battery. I got my n7 as a US import to the UK, and just noticed today that the charger they supplied me was 700mA instead of 2A,, so I went and bought a UK to US adaptor so I could use the ASUS OEM one, and its charging loads faster, should be nearly 3 times and so far it does seem it. If I was playing a game while charging, say Vice City, before I was able to actually make my N7 lose charge. Not now. So anyone with the slow charge problem please just double check your charger, just in case,, there's probably someone else out there like me that just didn't bother looking and is using a 700mA one.

Nice. I'm assuming there wasn't much gaming in your 8hrs of screen time. Still great battery life though. As long as I can do anything I like in the space of a day and be sure that I'm not going to run out then I'm happy.
I am still thinking of investing in one of those 10 or 12,000mAh battery packs though, just for times where I have to leave the house and haven't had the time to give it a full charge.
