Hi,
I've just connected a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo to my Nexus 7, it works great apart from the lack of a keyboard layout for English (UK). the only English layouts are US and US Dvorak style. Does anyone know of a way to get the keyboard to use a UK layout? The built-in Android keyboard has one and works fine.
Paul.
I'm going to second this question. The US layout is usable but when you have to use the " key to get an @ it starts to get annoying.
Workaround that works!
I had the same problem, having just bought a UK layout bluetooth keyboard from Amazon.
There is a workaround - "External Keyboard Helper Pro" in Google Play. It costs a couple of quid.
You can try out "External Keyboard Helper Demo" first, to show that it works - this is free to try out.
A word of warning - it took me a while to get this to work - it was quite fiddly, but it DOES eventually work!
A hint:
In Language & Input, these are the settings that work for me:
Default: External Keyboard Helper Pro
SELECTED: Android Keyboard: English (UK)
SELECTED: External Keyboard Helper Pro
Under choose input method, select:
Hardware Physical Keyboard OFF
English (UK) Android keyboard - NOT SELECTED
External Keyboard Helper Pro - SELECTED
By SELECTED I mean ticked in the above.
I found that choosing the English (Dvorak) layout in External Keyboard Helper Pro and having "Sound on keypress" on helped my work out when the app was intercepting the bluetooth keyboard input and remapping correctly. Once that you know it is working, switch off the sound and select "English (GB)" as the layout in External Keyboard Helper Pro.
I tried this solution and it works (though I have no idea why).
The problem is that you seem to have to go through the suggested routine every time you connect the keyboard.
Has anyone found a way of setting it up so that it automatically sets it self up with the English layout when you connect the keyboard and then reverts to the on-screen keyboard when you disconnect?

I have managed to connect a USB keyboard to my danish Advantage. What I cannot figure out is, how to change the keyboard layout. It seems that the phone has one setting for the software keyboard and one for the built-in keyboard, but there must be a separate setting for the USB keyboard.
My danish settings are not revealed in the registry, the settings says US layout (0409) but the built-in one is danish. Has anybody figured out the relation between these three keyboards?

Hello all !
I bought a Bluetooth keyboard (pics here).
Bluetooth pairing is ok, the keyboard works very good but it's in QWERTY...
Have you got any idea to switch the layout on AZERTY ? With an app or with files ?
I tried to put Generic.kcm and Generic.kl into /system/usr/keychars/ and /system/usr/keylayout/ like in the guide for xoom but, not working
Thanks !
have you tried going into Settings -> Language and Keyboard Settings -> Select Language and changing this to French
This should configure your phone to use an Azerty Keyboard layout. Unfortunately all of your menus etc will be in French
Hi all,
is it possible to stop the onscreen keyboard being displayed when you are using a BT or USB keyboard?
It just wastes half of the screen when you don't need to see the onscreen keyboard.
thanks,
Rich
Try disabling the keyboards from language and inputs.
but I presume on of them is system persistent. But just try and let us know.
There is a Null Keyboard app that just does nothing. I installed that and select it when I use an external keyboard.

Thanks Null Keyboard is what I need. Shame there isn't an option to do it through the system. It seems pretty obvious that if you have an external keyboard connected, you aren't going to need the onscreen keyboard.
It is actually quite easy, all you have to do is tap the return (back) button and the keyboard will sink in. I use a BT keyboard with both Samsung's QWERTY and Google's Japanese input (Beta) and in both cases I can get rid of the onscreen keyboard without a hitch.
What I'm really curious to know thugh if there is a good tutorial for keys you can use to edit while writing, selecting, copying, pasting, making bold or cursive, that kind of thing.
Hi! I bought physical keyboard and connected it to phone, but I can't switch between languages. "Ctrl+Shift" and other shortcuts don't work, tried on Microsoft SwiftKey and Google GBoard, but with no result.
The cause probably is I can't add more that one language in Settings -> Language & Input -> Physical keyboard. This is MIUI problem.
Any solution or a workaround?
Hi, try it (play.google.c?m/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper). This is work for me like a charm
Hello,
is it possible to change keyboard layout while using external (hardware) keyboard in EMUI desktop mode? I am planning to buy NexDock 2 and connect my P30 Pro to it. However, they only have US keyboard layout available.
Is it somehow possible to change the layout of the external keyboard (like on Windows) so you can type foreign language characters, for example German letters like ä, ö, ü...?
SOLVED
You can change the keyboard layout using External Keyboard Helper app. You are able to set a certain keyboard combination in order to quickly switch languages. For example, you can set Alt+Space or Shift+Space combinations to instantly change external keyboard language. Alternatively, changing the keyboard language on your phone using the keyboard app also changes the layout of your external keyboard. However, using External Keyboard Helper app seems like a better solution because you can change languages quickly with shortcuts without touching your phone.
