Change 3G Frequency Band from 900/2100 to 850/1900 - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have an S5830 (Baseband version S5830XWKT3). This phone operates on 900/2100 for 3G. Is there a way to change the frequency band to 850/1900?
I read somewhere it might be possible by flashing the modem. Can somebody confirm this? What modem should I try? As far as I can tell all modems listed on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289830 operate on 900/2100.

Depends, the frecuency for 3g is limited by Hardware. Flashing modems is mostly to keep your Hardware defined frecuencies with correct configuration:
A Latin model ace (5830L) might not catch the correct latin frecuencies when flashed with European firmwares, so you Flash a Latin modem to make it work. But the phone won't catch European frecuencies even with European modem/firmware because of Hardware limitations. This also goes the other way around.
Most European phones have Hardware support for different European frecuencies, just flash your region's modem (which can be extracted from fiemware, just open it with 7zip or something)
Hope this answers your question.

You'll just need to install a Latin American Modem

which modem to flash
Good day gents and ladies,
What I would like to know about modems and firmware is basically which modem Should I flash if I want to change my frecuency from 900Mhz to 850 and vice versa. For example I have a Samsung galaxy ace 2 gt-i8160 with a 900 MHz frequency GSM, HSDPA, UMTS. But in order to get mobile internet in 3G I need to have the modem firmware that corresponds to my telephone model and frequency of 850 MHz.
I know I can extract it with 7zip and flash with Odin but where do I find the correct firmware so I can do this? Can anyone please help? I've read and looked everywhere for possible solutions but nothing. Also, is it possible to flash a Latin modem on my phone without bricking it? I know if I flash all the firmware with, let's say, an i8160L on my i8160 galaxy ace 2 I'll brick it... But what will just one part of it do?
Thanks an advance for your time and help!!!

So its JPP modem compatible with the USA or not? I keep reading different info

Hi!
On one thread I read the JPP is only European then on the other it says European and US so has anyone used JPP on the USA without issues? It was rated highest in the thread that listed it as USA so I am hoping it works.

depends on the service coverage in your area. if your area is mostly all 1900, then you shouldnt have any problems with it
Jpp will work but you have to follow certain steps that noone can fully explain why it works.
Flash to stock
Flash jg8 modem
Flash jpp or jpm
These modems have support for 850 but for wherever reason it is only enabled by flashing the magical jg8 modem first.
Prior to the latest modems, this is what we had to do in order to use i9000 roms when 850 was needed.
After flashing the jg8 modem, allow the phone to boot and obtain a signal, them put the jpp modem in the rom zip in place of the modem.bin that is present. All these modems can be found in the modem thread which I am sure you know of.
Yeah I recall that process before. It seems that at home I dont use 850 but if I am at work I need it. So I cannot just flash JG8 with my current ROM and then JPP I need to go to stock? What stock is this cause stock would be Eclair so not quite sure here
Noone knows why this works but it is the only method that is proven. I don't believe flashing the modem over your current setup will work but you can give it a shot.

[Q] Why so many modems?

Sorry for this-I am just new to GT/Android.
In using phones as long as you have the correct frequency you can always use your phone anywhere in the world, using the sim card for that particular place. No need to hack or flash the modem.
The Galaxy tab is supposed to be also a phone. Why do I have to flash the modem? Is there no universal type of modem for android?
I assume that there is different firmware at least for the CDMA and GSM versions, and that on top of that there are incremental updates to the modem firmware.
If anyone else has any more/other info I'd also be interested to hear it.
E.g. Is the modem firmware provider dependent too?
The modem is a binary file to operate the radio, and with each rom upgrade, there is a modem tweak too.
The samsung galaxy s line of tabs and phones have a few radios in common, for example the vibrant, i9000, and tab use the same radio chipset.
US t-mobile tabs should:
get 2g+voice using a vibrant modem, and the stock radio for 3g data only, and you have to install the modem switch software by Rotohammer.
North American at&t tabs should:
get voice and 3g data using the JK3 modem from the i9000.
These guidelines assume you use a compatible sim, at&t sim in at&t tab, t-mo or simple mobile sim in t-mo tab.

Help! SGS i9000m poor GSM 900 signal

Hello, i live in Balkans(Europe), my SGS can connect only in cities and not in rural areas( it has no signal outside cities)
When i type *#0011# it is saying that it was connected to GSM 1800 and my country uses GSM 900, there are probably some antennas in main cities that work on GSM 1800. I tried to set it in GSM900 mode but then i cant get any signal.
I am having very difficulties when traveling.
Is it maybe a problem with internal antenna or is it software related.
The problem started when I flashed to gingerbread 2.3.3 (darky - ficeto or something)
now i have this:
PDA: I9000XWJVH
PHONE: I9000XXJVO
CSC: I9000XEEJVH
Try flashing just a modem for your area (or a different modem) in CWM or Odin. That should help. No need to change anything else.

+1.....have a look around for the best modem for your country, or ask in modem thread....make sure you get the right thread as modems for samsung and cm7 are different

?? about modem for captivate galaxy s

I rooted and installed serendipity rom and wanted to flash modem ....Is it safe to flash any modem spicifically this modem_cwm3_ugjl2 just making sure before I do and I don't want to mess anything up thanks
I checked this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 but Am really not sure which modem is safe?? for my galaxy s captivate atat phone
LOL trying to get to 10 posts so I can post in the modem forum LOL
for that rom, since it is i9000 based, you can safely flash that modem, assuming you have CWM 3 installed and not 2
You can safely flash any modem, there is absolutely 0 chance of permanently damaging anything.
The only issue you could have is if you are on an based I9000 rom and flash an i897 modem, or vice versa, there will be sound quality issues.
So as long as its I9k to I9k, and I897 to I897 it's fine.
I would like to enable WCDMA 900 Mhz (and no longer use 850 Mhz). The Infineon baseband IC is capable of 850 or 900, but not simultaneously, however I can't determine if a "modem" can actually re-program the IC for 900 Mhz?
If anyone has any advice or pointers I'd be most appreciative.
I could install any ROM/modem combination in order to enable WCDMA 900 Mhz.
I am currently running Paragon RC6, a 2.2.1 custom ROM, with I9000UGJK4, which has 850/1900/2100.

[Q] A question of modems & hardware

I have a question I'm hoping an expert can answer. I pretty new to the Android world so I'm trying to wrap my head around a few things..
So I bought a (prepaid/locked) S5830T from a store over here, and proceeded to unlock and upgrade to the latest
stock Gingerbread firmware (2.3.6). So now when I boot up, instead of S5830T, I get S5830. All good.
Now the phone runs fine, but I have an issue with 3G data in particular.
The "T" suffix appears to relate to the 'Telstra network' (which the phone was originally locked to).
According to this link - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
Telstra operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 850hz / 2100hz for 3G.
The carrier I am on (Optus) operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 900hz / 2100hz for 3G.
So I've flash the modem file from the Optus firmware package (Modem_S5830_XWKT3) hoping that that would enable
the 3G band that is currently not working.
(What happens ins 2G/"H" works fine, but when the phone switches to "3G" I lose all data connections)
But Alas, I still have the same problem..
So I'm wondering is there hardware in the phone that is preventing connection to the network, or do I need to find a more
appropriate Modem file that operates on the frequencies above?
Many Thanks!

Can you find the original Telstra firmware, extract the modem from that and flash it?
Can you get hold of a Telstra SIM and see if you still have the same issues?
The T doesn't necessarily signify Telstra but just a slightly different version of the S5830
It's the same with SGS2 there is a GT-i9100 and GT-i9100T (I have the T version purchased in Thailand so nothing to do with Telstra)
Because I have used this phone in Australia also, I've noticed that T modems perform better on my SGS2 than non-T versions.
I've found Optus coverage (in Melbourne) to be pathetic so I always have to ensure I'm using a T modem when I'm there.

Hey, Thanks for the reply ApriliaM3.
Yeah I know the T doesn't necessarily mean Telstra, but was pretty sure it meant there was a different modem to stock (as with your SGS2).
Which is why I reverted back to stock. I thought that may have been more accommodating of all frequencies..
That's very interesting what you say regarding your T modem.
I believe I can extract the modem from my base backup, so will give that a try.
As for the Telstra sim, that might be a little harder, but I'll try the modem first and then try to get a sim.
Thanks for the info!

I get the impression that my requirement for a T modem when I'm in Melbourne has more to do with Optus and their pathetic coverage than it has to do with the modem. When I'm in Thailand, it doesn't seem to matter what modem I use... they all get good signals and I have no problem with data either. I'm also a member on Whirlpool but I rarely go there any more... still it's quite a handy and informative site for many things
