Nice device but the drop down menu is nasty and the stock keyboard leaves something to be desired The stock launcher is also driving me nuts (no landscape). Rooting the thing was also a nightmare but I suspect 2 of my 3 my PCs were the culprit. I finally rooted and tested the N7 against my Tf101 Transformer and a little disappointed that FF7 plays identical on the new Tegra3. Perhaps FPse isn't taking advantage of the new cores. Meh.
I bought the tablet last night on a whim. I walked into staples and they had a bunch. Overall the build quality is great. Feels like a stout little tablet. I'm just not sold on the Phablet mode. I already have a GalaxyNexus and it kinda just feels like a large version of that.
I definitely am going to try tablet mode and a new keyboard (thumb keyboard was my choice on the 10"). I also recommend just unlocking ASAP just so you don't lose everything if you decide to root in the future.
Overall the device is a good buy for the $$ but just a heads up for new owners with prior tablet experience that it feels a little off from other tablets IMO. This doesn't have to be a bad thing.
I was pretty impressed with the battery even for through the night. I picked it up at 5pm and was pretty much constantly on it testing and rooting and testing until 3am. I gave it a good charge over night so well see how today goes.
Now if the awesome devs here can somehow get HDMI out working, I'd be set.

WOW, rooting was hard?
If that was really the case, you really shouldn't bother. Some people shouldn't have root.

Easy, guys. OP said his PCs were the reasons for the rooting nightmare. Probably ADB drivers or something.
And OP is just telling the community a few observations. I hardly think this is a complaint thread.
Drivers exactly... plus Windows 8. And for the record rooting has never been the problem... just driver issues. Plus if you look at my signature, you'd tell I've been around.
Anyway that said, the thread was just posting my initial thoughts and woes for new owners. Windows 8 is the future and its driver protection crap is horrible. If you guys actually found the steps for installing the drivers on windows 8, you'd know it wasn't an easy process. You basically have to reboot the Pc in a special mode that disables this security feature and really hack around with it. The Galaxy Nexus drivers went in without s hitch so it boils down to infancy drivers that aren't signed properly.
It IS an issue, just not for you guys apparently.
Overall once the drivers were locked in, yea ADB commands are cake... or use the 1 click app that's available.
Anyway, after replacing the stock keyboard to my fav Thumbs Keyboard and some heavy gaming, I got over 9 hours with almost 6 screen on time. The 7" form factor fits in my cargo pocket of my shorts and very easy to tote. Very nice tablet.
Missing HDMI out. And the screens whites have a red tint compared to my Transformer. Both, hopefully can be resolved by some custom kernels.
Thanks for the unneeded ball busting comments

Don't Initial thoughts typically happen within the first day... right? Isn't that the topic of this thread? Initial Impressions...
I currently own a Nook Tablet, Asus Transformer, Samsung Galaxy 7, Galaxy Nexus, and a Nexus 7. I think I am more then experienced in Android devices to make educated comparisons between units. Nothing is really negative anyway. Battery life is stellar, even for the first day. I got over 6 hours while gaming. I'm liking the N7... alot.
This thread is about me sharing my experience with others. I don't understand why everyone is negative Nancy in here.

My first three days with the device I didn't think it was a big deal, what's the fuss all about. But I haven't put it down since. I just love to pick it up and use it.
At first I thought it was just basically a big Galaxy Nexus (it really is) but that extra screen space sure is nice. Anyway dude, give it some time and if your anything like me you will get a lot of use out of it.
Really?! It's like everyone's getting upset because you basically said the N7 isn't 100% perfect. I just ordered a Nexus 7 a few hours ago, so I appreciate the post. I'll be the first to NOT bust your balls ( leave that to the old lady right? )
I'm glad you mentioned the sorta phone UI...every time I look at the home screen I cringe, and I was wondering what was up with it. I didn't really plan on running the stock launcher much, but I had no idea it was portrait only ( wtf? ) now I KNOW I'll never use it. Thanks for thoughts.

im saying goodbye to the droid 3 community. It has always been friendly and has really gotten me into android. I am going to miss this community BUT i may be back just to give you GB lovers a nice little surprise ;] im not going to say what it is yet [no its not a ROM lol] but im sure youll love it. also not saying becuase there are no promises, this is sort of a summer project for me between college but if i get caught up in the nexus i may not complete it. But i hoping i dont get too caught up, you guys deserve the best. Thanks hashcode, jonpry, sparkyman and all others for their continued suppor tiwht our device. Ill have this device for the next (5days max) but after i will be onto the Galaxy Nexus.
For these next five days i will be working extensivley isntead of being my usual lazy self to provide you guys with your little mini surprise. If i get alot done, i will release an alpha of it, by alpha i mean even half of what it brings wont be done
I'm right there with you. The droid 3 community is stellar. I also frequent the Galaxy Tab 2 community as well as a few others and to be honest, everywhere else is just full of assholes. I will be buying some unlocked galaxy s2 phone on Amazon as my upgrade is not until August 2013 and I need a phone for <300, haven't decided which one yet though. I am currently weening myself off my keyboard, but it's tough haha.
Anyways, good luck with your future endeavors!

Gee, this is tougher that I expected. I made the mistake of reading the other posts. Boohoo. Sooo, My first "smartphone" was the Verizon XV6700 with Windows OS. I hated it so much. I went to an LG with the phycial keys and was happy. It had the little dinky screen. Good for txt which is why I got it. Then the D1 hit !! it was everything+ that I wanted the XV6700 to be. By this time I'm "on" nightlies. Then D2 nah, D X nah, nah, nah. D3 ! Yeah!! I thought it would be the second coming. HashCode and all the D3 dev made it so promising. I have 80 GB of memory on it. I am (was) prepared for the future! I didn't know it then, but it kinda all ended with HC's post of the true bleakness of this phone, the D3. I have hung on since reading that post. I am ready to move on. 3 days ago I opened another line so I could get the GNex. I missed the days when I had a 1250 kernel on my D1 and it would be zipping along so fast it would trip over itself..I missed putting roms on my phone developed by devs with a passion to get it right. So, I will check back and see if GB for the D3 is perfected, or, just check in to see hows it going.
In closing I'd like to say that Hard work works, “The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.”

Very glad to see I'm not the only one.
Your guys thoughts on it? What should I expect, and how easy is it to unlock? I have past experience in unlocking and flashing stuff, as I'm coming from the Xperia Play.
EDIT - Didn't think of this when posting it, but how about some unlocked ROMs too. Preferably running at the latest Android version and is nice and fast but good battery life.
Its a nexus. Very easy to unlock, root, and install loads of custom roms and kernels.
However its rumored that there might be a new model announced soon. Something is happening June 10th. I'd advise to wait till then at least.
Otherwise the current N7 is awesome.

I was also coming from the Xperia PLAY when i bought this tablet, i think about 2 months ago.
It was agood choice!
You get always the latest updates and there are a lot of great mods on the forum!
If you're coming from the Xperia Play than it's almost similar. With the Nexus 7 you can go into fastboot without your Windows/Mac/Linux. Just press the power button and the volume down button and you're into fastboot. The best tool to unlock/root/recovery is Wug's Nexus toolkit. And i've you're searchin' for an awesome experience then go for Paranoid Android and Franco.Kernel!
Yea man, it's a nexus, all new android content will either originate here or immediately be ported to us. It's incredible for the price. I might be jaded though, seeing as I'm coming from a Motorola DROID X2 as my only android device.
Thanks for the opinion guys! As soon as I get another $60, I'm gonna be buying this bad boy. Also, I was in the OG Android Dev section, and I noticed a nice ROM called XenonHD. It looked pretty nice. How's that compared to PAC? And on my X-Play I have SlimBean, and I did notice there was a SlimBean ROM for the N7.

There is some virtue in patience when it comes to technology, but the game changes so fast in 6 months there'll be a new thing that's better anyway so why worry? Also, I don't put stock in rumors. A new Nexus 7 might come before the end of the year, I think but maybe it'll be a 2 year stay like the Xoom was. I'm considering this current Nexus 7 to replace my aging A500. It looks super smooth even on 4.2.2 so I think I'd be happy with it.

You won't regret buying it! I think you can get the drivers from Wugs but be very very careful using kits to unlock and root. Read the directions at least 3 times before doing anything. I've seen many posts about problems after using rooting kits. If you look it up its actually easier using adb to unlock and root.

Wug's toolkit is the best. You won't be needing anything else, really. Just read the instructions carefully.
OK I have a birthday tomorrow and as a present I am moving on to the Galaxy SII (yes, it's FINALLY my turn to say that!). $199 was too good to refuse, especially with 4 flexpays of $50. Two years of battling the Exhibit are enough, wouldn't you say? Anyway I will miss the forum around here a bit, even though we've had a number of departures over the past year. If it wasn't for the good folks in this community the Exhibit would have been retired LONG ago for me. Frankly without a custom ROM/kernel it is a POS device. No other way to put it! At least we have one or two new guys on the block to carry on for those who still have this phone or just got it. I wish them luck. As for myself I can't wait to try all the things that are available on XDA for this device. Hope I don't flash more ROMs than I did for the Exhibit or I will have no life left, LOL.
Anyway for those who are interested, go here for the deal: http://www.hsn.com/products/samsung-galaxy-sii-no-contract-smartphone-t-mobile/7334966
A couple months they ran out and just now got these phones back in stock. At that price I bet they don't have them for long.

Thanks man. Unfortunately HSN just raised the price back up to $249, same as they have it on Amazon. Man glad I didn't procrastinate anymore like I always do. Funny thing is I watched the video presentation they did on TV and I'm thinking how many more they could sell if they promoted the fact you can root & get the latest ROMs out there. Of course if they did that people would know they can get rid of that bloatware! Just think of the poor sheep who will just keep stock ICS on it.

I think that rooting is beyond the scope of most people's interest. As it also voids any warranty, the manufacturer would be slightly against HSN promoting the practice, is my guess.

They said 4.0 on the commercial and on the website. A friend of mine has one and it has ICS on it. No matter because it will be rooted and updated when I get it. Question will be whether or not to go with a 4.2.2 rom or KitKat. So many apps need to catch up to ART and the whole 4.4 OS system.

BTW if I forgot somebody it wasn't on purpose. Now on to the hard work of rooting and finding a ROM for the new phone. Hopefully I will settle on one or two but if my experience with the Exhibit showed anything it was a penchant for being a fairweather ROM user! I may stop by here every now and then too, afterall I haven't given the Exhibit away to anybody yet.
Lastly if it was one thing I got out of using this phone, it was to appreciate a really good phone once I got it.

hah hah! Congrats sir on the new phone.
I went ahead and plunked some coin for a Nexus 5. It has some sound bugs (some sound is fine with some apps and not others) and the vibration isn't as strong on key presses (but in other areas is fine and a tester app I found shows the vibration motor is fine). Meh, the speed just kicks butt! Also, having 2G of RAM is ..... awesome. The quad core ... anyway .. you get the idea.
I am still thinking of which ROM to put on ... I had cyanogenmod on my other phone and I loved it ... but they're not quite ready.
Take care and thanks for writing man!

But still i look back to this phone and still think this is probably the best phone ive owned. All day battery, great size and build quality, stock android. Yes development was always a minus, but still.
How is everyone doing?
PS: thinking of getting my sister an HTC First, its a pretty solid device hardware wise and she doesnt care much about software, she is using an old ipod touch and an ipad, shes tired of ios
Good to see someone else converting to the Android master race > lol. I agree with the fact that the battery generally lasted all day, but the lack of speed is what caused me to want to get something better. But yeah it was a good device when I came from a MyTouch 3G and then 3 Windows Phones.
Off topic here, are you seeing any drop in battery life on the official Lollipop update on your N5 compared to an AOSP version from a few days ago?

Haha I've converted to android since 2011 and my sister never likes apple anyways.
Miss this community so much, looks like everyone has left like Abraham and loir.
Um at first battery life was more like battery death but after a reboot and full charge I did manage to get my minimum of 4 hours screen on time. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get 5 hours.
I was thinking moto g, vs the HTC first, but I haven't found anything in it that is better than in the First. Especially for my sis who has really small hands surprisingly (she's 5 years younger but as big as me and I'm 19...)
still using my First and still hoping to get at least KitKat so that i can pair with android wear...
but looks like no luck and i have to change my phone soon.
:crying:
but seriously between first and Moto G, i'll get the moto G
at least you get official Lollipop support. 5 hrs SOT.
The 1st gen Moto G size is not that much bigger than the 1st

Yes you get software support..but this isn't for me. Its for my sister and plus I'd like to get back into hacking and stuff cause with a nexus you don't really want to tinker much

Yeah Lloir is no longer here since he bricked his First so he just upgraded to something else. Jmz is no longer here, and I'm not sure if sun_dream is here either. I know someone was working on a CM11 port but he told me that he needed to learn more before it was going to work well enough for daily use.

I just hate to see such a good device "go to waste".
I also wish i could port cm11, atleast learn some how, but my only computer is my desktop at home, and internet at 700kbps is not enough to do anything except browse the web. But if internet wasnt a problem id definitely try even though i have no idea how.
CM puts so much effort into mainstream devices that will get updates anyways and never focus on forgotten devices.

Yeah and it's sad because it didn't use to be like that. It's gonna be even worse when CM12 is released because they said that if a device 1) is not owned by maintainers or 2) can't cooperate with the new security measures then they won't support it at all.

Yeah probably. The best part is though that the GS3 Mini and Motorola Defy have both gotten 5.0 ports.

I'm gonna try to contact carbon ROM and see if they could take up development here. Better than nothing.

I've never heard of Carbon ROM. Is it AOSP with added features?

Its like a more stable version of CM with more features brought over from other Roms but its not as crazy as paranoid android or aokp
I dont want to upgrade also, I know i'll miss the design of the First if I sell it
I agree, First is a great phone, stylish, great design and ergonomics, i will keep this phone no matter what. My daily driver is Moto X, 2013 model. I like to use my phone in one hand, never liked anything over 4.7-in screen size, have had Samsung S3, original Note, Note 2 and Note 3, traded them all, although i really liked S3 the most, couldn't live with the Notes. Htc First has become my backup phone. Previously, i used a Palm Pre Plus as my backup, but i finally traded it in.

Yeah totally agree. I have a nexus 5 right now and it's quite great for one handed use. But looking for a first for my mom

Not that I know of. It's strange considering getting drivers for this chip set should be a piece of cake...
