Flashing Custom ROM on my devices - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I currently own a SGS II I9100 and a SGNote N7000. The I9100 is on stock GB(rooted) and N7000 is on stock ICS(not rooted). I want to have CM9 on both my devices. Both my devices are in the faulty hardware list that ICS brickbug can affect. So decided to downgrade the N7000 to GB before flashing CM9. Went through a lot of threads here, and one in particular was by Dr.Ketan which lists all the stock firmwares. A bit unsure whether my understanding of the steps are correct or not!
Download the stock firmware files of GB
use PC Odin to flash GB(as per steps in Dr.Ketan's guide)
after flash wipe and do factory reset(any corrections?)
Flash CWM Recovery(or need to root before this?)
Install CM9
My concern is that the N7000 is already on ICS. Won't a direct downgrade to GB via PC odin brick it?(Please don't castigate me if this question enrages you! I am dumbfounded here.)
Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
NOTE: I did ask this question by mistake in the SGS II section(since i'm going to flash CM9 to both my devices). But all i got was a sarcastic reply and a link to the CM9 Nightlies Discussion thread(because i used N7000 as an example!). I did go through many threads before posting this question, so please tell me whether the steps according to my understanding are correct are not and also if i'm missing something here. This is my first attempt at flashing ROMs. Once i get the hang of it, i wouldn't ask such questions. Thanks.

To be precise From GB kernel you can flash as much as you want. There is no risk. Follow Dr. Ketans Guide for the same. But for your N7000 as u r on ICS you need to be first on a safe kernel like Abyss 4.2. Since yiu do not wipe for the Kernel change it is safe as wiping or factory reset from an ICS kernel triggers the brickbug. So as the thread link above will say DO NOT WIPE WHEN IN ICS.

Yes i do understand that wiping from ICS will wipe the life off my device as well :silly: I wanted to go back to GB and then flash CM9. Let me re-phrase my question then. Is going back to GB from ICS as simple as downloading stock ROM from Dr. Ketan's page, Flash it via PC Odin and after flash, wipe and do factory reset? Do i have to re-partition or something? Because in the thread that you've pointed me to, the OP has posted saying going back to GB by repartitioning and flashing via PC Odin! I'm truly in the dark here. Kindly advice!
This is what i have now:
Directly rootable KL1 stock rom from Dr. Ketan's Page
Odin 1.85
CyanogenMod9 RC2 for N7000
So do i have to Flash GB, root it, flash CWM Recovery and get into recovery mode, and flash from the CM9 zip? These steps are the ones that are confusing me.

Yep, the steps you've outlined are correct, simple pc Odin flash of gb, no need to repartition. Then from there you can root and cwm, then flash cm9 zips through cwm.

(Q) Quick Guide on CM9 installation process

sup xda!?
I was trying to ask for this in the General Thread for CM9 but only found trouble..
After looking through the thread for over an hour, I still couldn't find a comprehensive guide on how to install CM9 on my device..
I know that you need PC-Odin for it, you need gapps and of course the zip of the ROM, but I just can't figure out what to flash, what Kernel to flash and how to..
As I saw many people asking about this, I think it would be greatly appreciated if one of you pros could spare the -minutes- it takes to give us noobs some info..
I am currently on the latest Stunner build and on the LP6-Kernel..
thanks for any help! peace
EDIT:
ok, copperdawgnc sent me to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
and told me:
"This will show you how to use PC ODIN & has GB roms to download"
so it seems that we need to use PC-Odin, as expected, and install a GB Rom first..
I know how to use Odin a bit but I still don't know what to install..
what Kernel, which ROM, any ROM? and do I really have to flash an unrooted stock and re-root..? why is that necessary?

so, it should go like this:
1 get ODEX PRE ROOTED N7000XXLC1 (Europe) or ODEX PRE ROOTED N7000DXLC2 (Malaysia)
2 install via PC-Odin
2.1 get PIT file and choose the 3 (?) files mentioned in the screenshot
3 after it's done: download Mobile ODIN
2. download CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LC1-v5.3-CWM5.zip
3. load CF-Root kernel using Mobile Odin
4. get back into recovery
5. wipe data
6. install cm9 and gapps
7. wipe
8. done?
seriously?
wouldn't it work if we only install the CF-Root-Kernel LC1 (?) and flash CM9 from there through Odin?
LC1 or some other Kernel?
thx
Thanks for posting this question, MrKancho. I can't help, but have the exact same situation myself, with imilka's CM9 rom. Just want to confirm that the installation method you outlined works without any problems before trying it myself.
Thx

You want to flash CM9 through Odin?
And how do you propose to flash a zip file using Odin?
You flash CM9 and Gapps using CWMR.

How to safely upgrade to ICS

Hi guys
Just wondering how I should upgrade my note to ICS?
I am currently on the stock AUS GB rom with Hardcore's speedmod kernel k2 12 I have been waiting a while to do the upgrade as I'm a little scared to flash since I heard of the bricking bug. I have downloaded the got brick bug app from chainfire post and i do have the bricking bug hardware in my gnote
I have also put off the upgrade as I haven't found a stock AUS ICS rom that is available from sam firmwares or the stock rom post by dr ketan.
I phoned Vodafone today to ask if they have released ICS for the samsung galaxy note and they told me that they have, so any ideas on what I should do?

download your preferred ics rom, (I prefer kingdroid 4.4 with speedmod k3-7 kernel combo)
put the rom and the kernel to your sd card.
So you are on gb rom with speedmod. go to recovery, flash jbdroid kernel cleaning script after that do a factry reset ( you do no need to wipecaceh and dalvik coz' jbdroid kernel cleaning scrip does it )
afeter facory reset install the rom, install jbdroid kernel cleaning script and install the preferred ics kernel and reboot.
while you are on ics and want to wipe I HIGHLY prefer to you flash abyss 4.2 touch recovery and wipe there!!!
Flash your ics rom from PC Odin and never ever wipe data /factory reset
If u follow the instructions right then u face no problems

hi danteoo7 I also read the same information on another thread about never wiping data which a reason why I posted this :|. So why should I download the ICS rom and use pc odin over a recovery or mobile odin?
Refer to this thread
Refer to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763151
Because Samsung stock rom kernel have emmc brick bug problem which can brick your mobile and its a hard brick not recoverable by jig ...
And PC Odin is always safer than mobile Odin ..

ahh this is cranky.rooted but read warning for kernel bug do what now?

i am form india and i have just updated my note to ics through odin.
now i have rooted it with dr ketan guide but havent flash cwm?this is different from ohter phone?then i read that bug kernel that can permenantly make my phone dead so what should i do to get cwm???
my kernel version is 3.0.15-n7000DDLPA-CL711285.
what will be the next step?is it must for me to change kernel and how will i get cwm?i read read and reread that post but little confused.
Install Mobile Odin and flash your kernel of choice through there - I did the same yesterday, Updated to 4.0.4, rooted with Dr. K's Temp CWM to inject SUperSU and then used mobile Odin to Flash SpeedMod K3-11..
Just remember DO NOT WIPE / FACTORY RESET on STOCK ICS Otherwise you will brick your phone..

And also never do any nandroid restore on unsafe kernel.
If you scare about the hardbrick issue, just follow dr.ketan method to unroot the phone.
If you wanna more secure, download any stock ics rom from sammobile.com and flash it thru pc odin. It wont give you any binary count increase and yellow triangle.

Some Kernels are "Safe" to wipe on (SpeedMod/NoteCore etc) - I personally always downgraded to GB to do wipes / factory resets.
I believe there's a Mobile Odin Lite on this forum - you can grab it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899

There are other methods, but if you have the time this is the safest way for me still..
But - there are usually full instructions on the ROM threads so as long as you follow those you should be ok

go back in gingerbread

Hello everybody, My galaxy note running on MUIU Ice cream sandwish with a dangerous kernel and i want to go back on stock official gingerbread and I wondering if i can flash a stock rom via odin and if it's was dangerous for the phone , because i don't want to use the kernel abysal method.
Thank in advance

Well the odin way, is the safest way in my opinion.
Flash a safe kernell and then Flash the gb rom you wish via odin.
Search in the forums and you will find the exact safe steps

I wondering why flash a safe kernel before?
I can just flash the full stock rom via odin on a dangerous kernel right?
Straigh way flash any stock GB ROM with PC Odin.
Very likely you will face force closes after flashing GB stock ROM, nothing to worry, just reboot to recovery and wipe cache and data, everything will be fine. Remember wiping should only perform on GB ROM.
So thank you very much everybody
so i flash the rom via odin , so the flash pass, aftert i get a bootloop on samsung logo so i shutdown my device, and
press home and power button and volume up and select wipe data and wipe cache
reboot the device and everythings is fine

As long as you flash with odin, no need to flash safe kernel as odin does not uses recovery, but it is not advised to flash stock ICS as you may have to wipe immediately after flash. And wiping on stock ics can brick your Note.

Most of the times we may have to wipe in stock recovery after flashing stock rom using odin (specially if flashing over custom roms or flashing GB over ICS), and we all know that Samsung ICS kernels are not safe to wipe, it may brick your device if you have to wipe in ICS stock recovery.
Best is to first flash GB, wipe and then flash ICS using odin.

[Q] Restoring the phone after using CWM.zip and SU-Busybox-installer.zip

My apologies for the noob situation (new to Android tho a veteran iphone jailbreaker) but I did try my best reading lots of threads to seek the exact info I need:
Things I've done:
1) I got my N7000 with stock ICS 4.0.4 (Kernel: ZSLPM) yesterday
2) I followed some online resources in my local language forums and used both CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip to "root" the phone
3) I then started researching for ways to flash to JB rom but found out info regarding possible bricking hazard with stock ICS kernel and CWM.zip
appreciate if anyone could point me the safe way to :
either
1) Remove the CMW.zip and Su-Busybox-installer.zip to unroot the device and make it back to virgin state? so I can start everything over again and follow Dr. Ketan guides for rooting with safe kernel (I read we could flash the unstaller but that also need to put me back to Recovery, safe to do this under CWM.zip?)
OR
2) how could I flash my current setup (rooted already with CWM.zip) with a safe kernel ?
Thanks very much for any guidance.
Regards,
Anthony

So you mean after I root my N7000 with CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip I have actually already flashed my kernel and rom in the phone already? I thought I have only rooted it but the kernel and rom are still untouched? please advise and thanks for responding.

You can go to Settongs>>About Phone & under "Kernel version" you will be able to see which kernel you are using (for ex: my Note shows HydraCore_v5.34 which is a custom kernel).
So, if you are still on Stock (i.e., un-safe kernel), use PC Odin & flash custom kernel (use Dr. Ketan's guide). Make sure *NOT* to wipe/factory reset when you are on stock kernel. In case if you want to unroot, then also you have Dr. Ketan's guide in the same post.
Start using thanks button rather than posting thanks.
Even if u r on stock rom and stock kernal to unroot flash them back using odin

CWM.zip is a tenp recovery.. it doesnot stay in the system after reboot. thou su-busybox stays... but if the phone has booted up that means u have root access now...
just install the philz kernel from here for ur rom. this is a safe kernel and u will be able to do wipes. this kernel can be flashed from stock recovery.
