Simple solution for wiping issues - Motorola Droid 3

I've noticed people having a lot of issues due to lack of wiping. I've found a very simple solution.
Before flashing any rom, go to mounts and storage:
"Format cache"
"Format system"
"Format data"
Problems solved
Sent from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app

I never understood why you need to flash /cache because wiping/factory reset already formats /cache.
Also, flashing the rom will format /system.
I've flashed roms about 10x now and everytime I wipe/factory reset then install rom and it worked fine everytime

+1. Also, anybody who tells you to wipe multiple times is pulling your leg. Is there really something that wiping data or wiping dalvik misses the first time that it might wipe a second or a third time? Ridiculous.

Ya I always just flash the zip, factory reset and reboot. Never had a problem

Same here, I've never had one problem but evidently other people have, so i figure formatting everything will solve any problems anyone may have.

Very true, tibu is good for user apps but that's about it.

Spewing the ignorance. If a Dev suggests to wipe first then wipe 3 times more maybe there is a reason? Try asking the Dev before spewing hearsay. Not everyone's phone is the same. Try and think about what you post and the possible consequences. You wouldn't want to be pulling someone's leg now would you?

If a format procedure is the same each time you run it there really are no advantages to multiple uses. That used to be the case with hard drives (DoD wipes, etc), but I don't see its application with todays Flash modules. Simply writing something (0 or 1) to each sector should get the job done in one shot. Still, if devs are suggesting it and people are seeing need for it, perhaps the format procedure is slightly different for each run?
Sent from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app

I said this on droidforums in the team haters topic but almost got my ass kicked by the devs for saying it

What, exactly, is wiped a second time, or a third time, that is not wiped the first time? Does each data wipe/factory reset only wipe a part of data, or a part of cache? Are you suggesting instead that there is a problem with ClockworkMod Recovery or Safestrap that does not wipe data correctly?

You can always wipe with Android Recovery. But either way, one wipe has never been enough for me... Not until I found this!

Sorry, sorry. I can't be the only one who got a chuckle from the thread title. But seriously, I've wiped before and after an install AT MOST. Usually before since a factory reset wipes out the /data and /cache partitions and flashing a new /system (part of a ROM install) will overwrite whatever was previously written to /system.

Hahaha!
Sent from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app

If a wipe was a wipe and there was no need for a second wipe cause the first wipe was "perfect" then I submit there should be world peace. There is static and dynamic in all things that move. Or as my teacher at SMCC said throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks. Some 1s or 0s are wipe resistant. Takes a couple two tree passes to kill some.

Sadly that's not always true. I have seed cases where binaries from my old rom stayed in the /system partition after flashing another. I always format /system now when flashing, it avoids this problem.
The "wipe 3X" thing is pure superstition tho.

Update:[CM7] ICS Statusbar layout mod for Epic 4G[1.0]

This is all the work of ZduneX25, so all credit for this interesting mod goes to him.
I've done nothing but decompile and modify our framework-res and SystemUI apks, recompile and resign them as well as inserted them within an update.zip for people who aren't up to go and do the edits(It's tedious and a lot more than I thought it was haha). I hope it's of some help to you all.
Original Thread for information on how to do the modifications on your own or change the bottom carrier text: Original Thread Layout ICS Statusbar
Current bug if you'd consider it one:
Is the carrier at the bottom of the pulldown fades after it's fully pulled back up but as that is fixed or if it is I'll update alongside it.

I'll try my best to update this as current as I can to match the pace of work that Zdune is doing. But if any questions are to be asked I would suggest to go into the original thread and ask them as I'm not the creator of this mod.
But I'd gladly be able to attempt to help in any way so you can ask questions here as well.
Important Information:
Before flashing this in CWM you should wipe dalvik cache to guarantee no issues arise.
As always make a nandroid before flashing in case on the off chance something goes wrong you can always completely revert.
Zips updated with auto-wipe for cache and dalvik cache upon flash with the help of ugothakd.
Changelog
Fixes Ghost Carrier at bottom of Statusbar, still some remaining issues with it.
Adds Data and replaces custom carrier text.
New and current version: 1.0
Statusbar Mod 1.0
Statusbar Mod Revert
Past versions:
ICS Statusbar Mod 0.9

Hmmmm, that's odd, was it hanging on the CM7 Android Skating? Because it stays there for a bit before booting into the system. Flash the revert zip and give it some time and let me know if it boots, if it's not too much of a hassle? If so, try the mod zip again and it should boot as well.
I've been flashing them multiple times to be sure they work but I'll update the scripts to auto clear.

I was looking at the XML its likely to be possible in some instances we have more lines, they may begin to blur because they're similar right beneath each other. But also we aren't able to swipe notifications unless that may be possible to bring along as well as well.

Sorry typo....thanks for correcting
Sounds interesting, I look forward new developments
FYI,
Coming from Epinter's cm10 11/5, I factory wiped data and cache, followed by wiping the system and dalvic cache as well. Then I flashed webtop first followed by this ROM at 1:20am est using TWRP 2.2.2.0 which resulted in my phone stating there was no operating system installed when I attempted to reboot. I then flashed cwm 5.0.2.7, rebooted recovery, wiped all again and installed web top and this ROM, which gave the same results. I tried wiping all files again and flashing my backup zip made with ROM factory but this was unsuccessful as well. I noticed during the install of the rom, it stated a script was running during the installation process and that same message was appearing during the flash of the backup I made. I had to flash Epinters cm 10 from scratch to recover.

Well, as you can see, I can't install any apps using market, it just says: (Translated from swedish) Could not download [Kik messenger]. There isn't enough space on the unit.
But as you see at another pic, I have formated the internal memory so I have almost the full space.
What can I do?
Found a similar thread but not exactly the same so I made a new, sorry If I made the wrong choice.

Thanx for the answer
This happens when you have a cache partitions that's ether to small. Or come from a rom that have symlinked the cache partition. And now have flashed some thing else that don't but still have config files left.
Best and easiest way is normally to do a full wipe and reflash the rom. Use Nvflash or Smartflash and flash the stock firmware and then later the rom you want.
If not you can always symlink the cache partition to a new location your self with a terminal editor on the phone. And make that a script if it the rom support init.d .
Its a rom problem that nt supporting Google play .you can install ur backed up app bt from store u can't ....

Low memory on CM9

Hi all,
My phone just started to show that I have a "low memory" I cannot for example install GNow for ICS (this one e.g. says I have only 3 megabytes available in my /sys/ directory).
does anyone know what the problem is? I didn't have such a problem before on a stock rom even with twice as much applications installed.
The problem is more interesting that I have more than 1,5GB of space available on both memories.
Thanks in advance

A friend of mine had the same issue. I figured out it went away if I went to Settings->Applications->GPS or google maps (can't remember)->clear data.
Eventally it always came back though.

Thank you for the suggestion. Will try.
That is very annoying because the phone has a lot of free space to use and now the ROM just downgrades your otherwise high specs phone to a low-end model without any memory.
The annoying thing is that this was a very popular problem with many solutions but you didn't search.

No unfortunately. One of the cons of flashing.

What about using titanium backup?

It can restore data but can result in issues from configurations and compatibility. You can nandroid your stock img and try. If it's crashing, you can always revert to stock with your backup.

What exactly do you mean by custom? If you are on stock, I wouldn't flash CM12.1 without a full data wipe. However, if you are on on stock and use one of ComputerFreak274's builds, you should be able to unlock your bootloader and install with just wiping Dalvik/Cache. I've done it with mofo a bunch of times and never lost my user data. Heck, I am flashing his 1.2 right now and it's optimizing app 235 of 279, so it looks like it is all still there!
Define data? Pictures mp3s ... The sdcard stuff? Yeah that won't leave unless you tell it to. Your angry birds and bike race data? That's going away.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I've always been able to back up my data, plus my internal storage (pics, music, downloads) has never been wiped when flashing ROMs.
I've also never had any issues. I've backed apps up using titanium, and have been able to save stuff like playlists, game saves, and bookmarks.
You may have an issue with one or two apps, but overall, you should be able to save all of that data between ROMs.

Yeah, if you mean your STORAGE DATA (pictures, downloads), you can keep that. If you mean your app data, Yahoo user name and password that will get wiped clean. Although you can install Titanium Backup to restore those apps with data.
In TWRP, you want "factory reset" which wipes data partition, cache, dalvik but leaves storage alone.

Others purposefully do wipe everything, but they are doing it for a reason. That's not what most people need or want.

...unless you flash a ROM based on stock and don't wipe data. Just flash and then wipe dalvik and cache. All you apps will be there, all their data (or saves for games) will be intact.
