usb2go with usb hub question - Nexus 7 Accessories

I'm leaving the country soon and I've been toying with ideas on how to charge my device and play movies from an sd card at the same time. My friend mentioned plugging in a usb hub into the nexus with a usb2go adapter. Could I then plug in an sdcard with movies into one usb slot on the hub and a battery pack on another to charge? Or are there limitations I'm not aware of that would stop this from working.

the nexus 7 requires a specific connection to receive power to charge the battery, not every usb power supply will work.

OTG w/ charging

like most MHL cables that include the charging port (where you just plug in from wall), is there anything like this for OTG??
tried finding and searching but nothing.....
If you're looking for power going to the USB device, then you can use this.
If you want to charge your Note while using the OTG feature, then I've not yet come across anything like that.
Just wondering if it is possible to charge the Note 2 while using the OTG yet? I'm in my car all the time and use an external SD card. My 64gig internal card is already full.

How about a scenario where I have External Battery charger and OTG adapter with usb stick. I want to watch the movie on usb stick while also have External battery connected charging the phone. I guess it's the same problem as not being able to charge up phone from any external source while using another device connected to OTG?

You could make your own micro USB OTG cable. I still haven't seen one for sale anywhere.

Oh, I don't have issues with OTG cables. I have adapter and cables, and modified cables before: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2107985
I just want to figure out how I can watch movie from usb-stick while charging my phone at the same time. There seems to be no solution for that yet? Or are you suggesting there is a way to make a custom cable to do that? I think once you attach OTG cable to connect a peripheral device, you turn Note 2 into host and it will not accept charging from micro-usb port. No way around it

Oh, I understand what you mean now. In that case, you are correct. You cannot charge your phone and use an external thumb drive at the same time through the usb port. When you plug in an external drive, your phone switches the USB power cables to send the juice instead of receive it.
The only ways I know around that are to use a wireless charge stand or the desk dock.

Isn't this exactly what sammys smartdock does? Charge and otg simultaneously?

Yep. Not possible with just a cable. It needs a microprocessor to regulate the current in and out. Devices plugged into the dock are powered by the dock's power, not the phone's.

I hear what your saying, but looking at threads in the S3 section like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061 got me thinking... I'm just trying to make an audio cable for my car that charges and has 3.5mm out to my radio. And I need it to work with every 4.1.X kernel and above, especially stock.

If you get a pinout for the s3, might be able to modify a cable to do both.

Powering external HDD OR Nexus 10+other USB device with external battery...?

This might be a bit of a tricky question...
I have this thing:
http://www.amazon.com/EasyAcc-12000...e=UTF8&qid=1371758929&sr=8-1&keywords=easyacc
And I would like to connect my 2.5" hdd to my Nexus 10. But even if I'll be able to connect it, I'm fairly certain it'll drain the battery veeery fast. Could I power either the hdd with a cable like this
http://www.amazon.com/OEM-UTStarcom...?ie=UTF8&qid=1371759016&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+y
or charge the nexus 10 while using the hdd if I connect both the external battery and the hdd to a usb hub like this http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...e=UTF8&qid=1371759098&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+hub and then obviously connecting the usb hub to the Nexus...
? I don't want to use an externally powered usb hub because I won't have access to a power outlet all the time.
Has anyone ever tried this? Can I ruin my device by playing around with plugging different things at once into it's usb port or is that safe?
Device is rooted if that matters.
I know this is primally not useful but try posting on reedit as well? Sorry but I don't have much knowledge in this area

JUICED SYSTEMS 5 IN 1 MHL Connection Kit

I found this product and was absolutely amazed with the quality and ease of use. It has hdmi, usb, sdcard, and micro sd card slots. You can find it here http://www.juicedsystems.com/product/juiced-systems-5-in-1-mhl-adapter/
Also the customer service is great if u have any problems, its warranty is amazing as well, if there is any defective product , contact juiced systems and they will replace it.
If u have 1 of these already then here is an instruction manual to help u better understand your product.

Hi,
Thanks for the manual, very helpful. That is really a pity that no information is provided along with the adapter, neither in the box, nor on their web site. Where did you get it ? From Juice System support ?
I have got that connection kit. Everything works with my Galaxy note 2, but with the following strange behaviour:
The kit was delivered with a 11pin to 5pin adapter. Since S3 and GN2 have 11pin connector, I assumed first I had to use it, but nothing happened with my USB dongle or with any other USB device. Then I found out how to make that work:
For USB device, or SD / micro SD card, the adapter must be removed. The connection kit is power supplied directly by the phone. However, the phone can be charged if we connect the wall charger. The LED indicator and the button behave as described in the manual.
But HDMI output does not work at all.
To connect a HDMI cable, the 11 to 5 pins adapter must be used, and the wall charger must be connected. Then the connection kit is powered only by the wall charger. That seems that I get a normal 1080p signal with a 44khz 5.1 PCM audio stream (that is at least what my AV receiver says). But if I disconnect the HDMI cable and the wall charger, then USB, SD card are not recognized and nothing happens.
Do you have the same behaviour ?
After further investigation, the behaviour I described seems "normal".
That adapter was designed for GS2, which as a 5 pin MHL connector. So the data lines are switched in USB mode or MHL mode by the connection kit.
But the GS3 and GN2 have 11pin connector, with independent USB and MHL data lines.
So without the 11 to 5 adapter, only the USB pins are routed to the connection kit.
With the 11 to 5 adapter, only the MHL pins are routed to the connection kit.

Is there a real way to power off the Chromecast?

The only way for me to turn off my Chromecast, is to pull out the usb cable that came with the chromecast. My TV doesn't have it's own usb port so I use the adapter that came with the Chromecast. It feels like I;m going to break my Chromecast if I keep pulling out the usb cable. I know theres a button on the Chromecast next to the micro usb port, but it's for resetting the chromecast?
So is there a way to turn off the Chromecast? Or I have to unplug it?

I don't see why you'd be concerned that it could break the Chromecast to unplug the micro USB power. However if it makes you feel better, you could unplug the other end (from the AC socket) instead.
You can also reboot Chromecast using the Android app. Once it finds your Chromecast you tap it, and then in the next screen press the menu dots to get the reboot option.
Who really cares? Leave it plugged in! It's going to sip the juice when when not streaming and may even go into some type of standby when there is no HDMI detected.
I am also concerned about that mainly because my chromecast heats up if its connected all the time to the ac adapter.

yeah that's why. It's like burning hot. Worries me. Also there was a guy that messed up his Chromecast by unplugging it.
I noticed my chromecast got hot after only 10 minutes of usage. Got to remember unplugging it after each use. I guess this is another one of those things where google wants you to be online 24/7 so they can data mine you, your battery life/electricity usage be damned.

Maybe get one of these for $16USD:
Measy U2C-D All-in-1 USB + HDMI + SD / MMC Card Slot Holder Dock Stand for Google TV Player - White
It is a docking station for HDMI sticks, and it has a power switch which works for Chromecast. Doubtful if any of the other features work with Chromecast, e.g. USB hub, SD Card, etc..
But you can swap in an Android Stick computer and use all the other features.
It turns off for me when the TV is turned off, but I have it plugged into my TV via USB for power.
Honestly I leave mine plugged in and on 24\7. Can't say I'm worried about the heat it produces, it's a constant heat. It'll be interesting to see if someone could build roms for this device to include sleeping and waking functions. It would also be cool if the home screen could have informative widgets that have weather, simple news and other notifications
If rooted, I'd imagine that you can telnet into the chromecast and then gracefully shutdown the Linux operating system before powering it off.

[Q] Xperia V: usb otg while charging with dock pins

Hi, before I start, yes I've seen y cables and moded usb hubs but,
I need to know before I vandalize my charging dock... If I have a charger connected to the pins on the outside of the phone, would it interfere with the usb otg? Has anyone tried this before?
Long story, I need to mount my phone and use it as a dashcam, I have 2 apps for this(one for road use, recording to sd card, don't need otg, short trips that gets deleted after a day or so) the other(for off road use, usually recording for hours at a time, so this will go to usb storage, but recording several hours does get power hungry) and therefore I need a charging dock with access to usb otg and the camera. Can it be done?
Another problem with this phone is the hdmi that also uses the same port, but I'll keep that till later.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
P.s. Accessories are hard to find for this phone where I live(the shops only keep for Samsung) so I'll build mostly myself.
