Abyss Red Recovery doesn't show downloaded ROMs. .. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

.. Alright I am wearing luck on my sleeves ... I wanted to try staxx hybrid ROM every thing was ready I followed the time tested procedure of installation
1. Reboot to recovery
2. flash abyss red touch recovery and again reboot to recovery, all red red and touch touch!!
3. wipe data/factory reset
4. The other two wipes.
5 Went in to install menu on abyss
Now fun begins! The ROMs , Kernel that I had stored on my external sd card where not to be seen , they just vanished. I searched every where and nothing, it just can't be seen. I had earlier did a back up CWM or nandroid back up or what ever that was, after trying for some time and failing miserably to get the glimpse of the ROMs i downloaded I lost all hope, and decided to restore the back up . I restored the back up and my phone is back .
6. Again I rebooted into recovery , this time it was CWM recovery ,obviously, I could see my downloaded ROMs and Kernels.
7. I could see my downloaded ROMs and kernels through File manager.
My question is 1) Why i didn't see my ROMs on Abyss 4.2 Red touch recovery kernel? and how do I resolve this?
2) I used my back up and restored it. Do i have to back up again? or this back up will work again, & again. Assuming, of course, I don't want the post back up
changes to be reflected once i restore again.
I wil be grateful if anybody can help me with answers. Have fun and Happy Flashing!

Not sure why you couldn't see it. DId you put ROM in root of Internal SD? Try putting it in Root of both Internal and Exernal.
Don't backup again. Do 1-4 and you should see your ROM when you choose install ZIP from INternal or External.
And not knowing about your ROM is it a CWM ROM- maybe you need Mobile ODIN?

Your kernel and rom is in tar files so it did not register.
Or put your custom rom and kernel in internal and external sd i think you will not miss it.

I was on criskelo v9, CF 5.6 LRG kernel. All the files were in zip format so perfectly flashable on abyss. I was trying to flash Staxx paranoid hybrid Rom. I just saved it on my external SD card not in a folder on a extsd card. Can that be the reason? Very weird problem,Albeit very dangerous imagine you wiped all and ready to install the ROM and there is no ROM what will you do. Luckily I had a backup what if I didn't had a backup I would have struck on abyss recovery! !

I think that is your answer - save on both internal and external just in case. HTH

Hi, what ever you had in ext sd card will be there only. i think you are not correctly accessing your ext sd card.

No dude.... I checked it 10 times, in fact I had no other option other then looking for them! finally I gave up, and was wondering what to do then it struck to me to restore back up and I did that and rest as they say is history
I did get few answers like
1. Abyss is a GB kernel and I flashed it on ICS things went wrong.
2.I didn't put them in a folder.
Not sure what exactly the issue was.... Now I won't flash abyss but still I am not sure which are safe ICS kernel to perform wipe data?

Custom kernels are safe to wipe like speedmod, cm9 etc
Stock ics roms are unsafe.

Only booting a ICS ROM with a GB kernel will cause havoc. But then you can install Abyss kernel for wiping data safely. Your procedure is also correct. My hunch is that at some place super-user permissions must have hindered the process.

If I have to check again what went wrong I have to flash abyss, wipe all 3 and then if I could not find the ROM again I will have to restore the back up. I want to do it but... Wondering is it worth the risk!

Today I checked it again when I was moving from criskelo to liquid black. I flashed abyss and I realized that it doesn't show external sd card. So ext sd card mount problem I guess but not sure why ? And now I am on Franco r3 kernel this kernel should be safe to move to cm10 in future or should I go back to GB all together .

Franco kernel has the emmc bug disabled so all together it is safe. Guess you can start working safely.

My Abyss Red reverses the two SD cards, so the Internal appears External and vice versa. This is well documented.
I've had no trouble using Abyss, so I think you just need to do a little more homework.

[Q] Flashing ROMs

Do I really need to flash to stock before I flash a ROM everytime? IT GETS SOO ANOYING.
I do, its not that big a deal. Place CWM update.zip in the root of your SD card, place desired ROM somewhere on the card. Odin to stock allow to fully boot, then restart into recovery. Flash CWM, then flash ROM from CWM. You don't need to root or use ROM manager.

I don't I have had my captivate since august and have only used odin three times. There are a lot of reasons why flashing stock is neccesary, but just switching from one rom to another is kind of a waste. One reason is 3e recovery. It is easier to flash stock 2.1 not 2.2 and then flash a new rom as the above post says just put the update.zip and newrom.zip on the root and install. Once you are on a custom rom with a custom kernal you can use the options in recovery to flash another rom. I just factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, and flash, if you really want to wipe everything you can go into mounts and storage and wipe everything, but the boot again. Then go to mount usb and copy over the rom from the computer, and then flash. The update script included in the new rom will wipe everything once again. If you have problems, like you got a bad flash, try flashing the same rom over again. Its kind of rare to get a bad flash. In short just flash over if you have problems then use odin.

When switching kernels
I typically flash back to stock when I'm going from one kernel to another. If the ROM I'm on and the ROM I'm going to use the same kernel (or at least the same line, i.e. two different versions of SuckerPunch), I usually skip the back-to-stock step.
Some say that it is only worth doing if you run into problems with the Rom. I do it everyrime to avoid anything that might happen. Plus old habits die hard from my WM days where flashing stock was needed

I do it everytime. It hardly takes 10 mins and I don't mind spending that 10 here than spend debugging later

About as annoying as seeing this question asked dozens of times when it can easily be answered by doing a search or just scanning the forum titles for a similar thread.
It is easy to do, but no real reason to do so unless on a 2.3.3 rom

Back up in CMW stuck at "bb"

Hi guys,
Last week I rooted my phone and flashed the Rocketrom v10 flashing the Abysskernel first, just to be 100% sure there couldn't happen anything, and then flashed the rom. Everything works with fine with it and I'm very happy that I begin to understand how flashing and so is on a Samsung device (with the emmc brickbug and stuff).
Now: I want to flash the CM10 ROM but I prefer to do a backup of this rom before I flash any rom again. I tried once and got into clockworkmod recovery (via Volume up, power and menu button pressed all at once) and tried backing up my rom there. That didn't seem to be a problem untill the whole progress bar had reached to almost 100% and there was written "bb" and got stuck on that screen for ages..
What could that be?
I thought I could try to make a backup using ROMmanager but there they ask me to flash clockworkmod recovery, and I don't know if that's a good idea, because the rom already has a CWM recovery in itself?
thank you very much!
If you are interested inflashing CM10,here is the detailed guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801686
when you were doing the back up you were probably on Notecore kernel right ?
Yes, thats right. Is that the problem? Because I thought it was a safe kernel from what I can back up and wipe without problem..?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
That kernel seems to be laggy on cwn... Try speedmod k3 13.. Has fast cwm... Or hydracore which has the latest.
Also make sure u have enof space in ur storage

I have not been able to get the rom manager to work on my n7000:
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
So I could download hydracore or another safe kernel and immediate after that make a backup in cwm. Afterwards I'd have to do a fullwipe and after that I could flash for instance the paranoid android ROM? I dont need to installs another kernel to do these things right...just a safe kernel like hydracore?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
I have a problem.
I tried flashing the hydracorekernel and it worked, than I tried backing upthe rom but it warned me I hadn't anough space, probably, and it continued the action and got stuck on system backup at "email.apk". So i pulled the battery to get the phone rebootedand free the sdcard space. But there it wentwrong: on the recovery CMW recovery that came with the hydracore kernel nothing happened when clicking 'reboot system now' to reboot the phone. It just showed me a screen with the rommanager logo and the version number of the cmw recovery, all the option (like choose zip from sd) dissapeared when clicking reboot but the phone didnt reboot.
What should I do now?
i dont have a backup on my phone yet, because I flashed hydracore to be able to backup my phone... I have these zipfiles onmy sdcard:
- abyskernel (I had it to be able to flash rocketrom)
- rocketrom zip
- paranoid android zip
- googleapps zip
- hydracore kernel zip
What should I do know?! My phone wontboot anymore, just because I wanted to back my rom up (and therefore flashed hydracore correctly)
as a rule you should never ever try flashing a kernel using CWM... that would tantamount bricking your phone.
If you can boot up still in Download Mode, You may need to downgrade back to stock GB first. Once your phone is in stock GB. Flash AbyssNote kernel to root your phone. By the way Abyss kernel is ONLY USE ON STOCK GB and NOT on any ICS ROM.
Once you have your phone rooted and in stock GB... follow the instructions on flashing back your RocketRom kernel (from the instructions in flashing on RocketRom's thread)
P.S. Not that I am against Hydra/NoteCore... but I am more confident in flashing SpeedMod on any custom ICS ROM. Not that it matters to you though, but I'm just saying it.

like I've said.. you can try whichever kernel you like.. but my personal preference is SpeedMod...I have nothing against HydraCore itself as I have tried it myself... and Yes SpeedMod doesn't have those 'magical elves and wizardry' that Hydra delivers... but what it can deliver is stability and peace of mind (at least on my part). You can gain confidence on a kernel when there's less (to none) issues it can bring.
Hmmm agree

[Q] Can't restart after installing Cyanogenmod 10

Hello everyone,
I downloaded CM10 alpha 5 from ivendor and put it on my internal sd card.
In the post it said flash the update.zip and gapps.zip files, but I only had the whole cm10 zip file.
I installed that but it didn't work and now I'm stuck in the clockworkmod.
I think I didn't read well enough, so can you tell me what I did wrong?
I guess I should try another ROM, but is it even possible to put one on your sd card when the phone doesn't start?
Thanks alot,
Bob
You made a backup before you flashed it?
If you did, restore it and reboot your phone, i think you did something wrong, if you downloaded the good file you just flash update it and it will reboot normally, be sure its a .Zip file

So for some reason, some phones naturally bootloop in recovery when trying to install CM10.
Did it say installing, then stop, reboot and bootloop in recovery?
If it did, DO NOT PANIC. Everything is fine. Sometimes the phone needs to do that to install an updated recovery. If that did happen, just take out the battery and reinsert it, reboot into recovery. Flash the same CM10 again, then Gapps.
But just as a failsafe, if you want to flash back to 2.3.6 (I'm sorry, I don't know what it is for the I9001) through odin with dbsdata.rfs (due to data partition differences between stock and CM10). Just in case you want to start completely over.

hi it say to flash the "update.zip", do u think u should of flashed the cm10 file u downloaded instead?
i am only new to experimenting with my phone myself and nearly made that mistake. have u got any further with this problem anyway?
you Just have to do a wipe factory / flash upgrade.zip / flash gapps / reboot
if you do a wipe factory, you will lose your data. but this is a safe method to move from a old rom to a new one

[Q] camera not working galaxy note

Yes I know I am a NOOB at 46 but I still can't resist messin with **** that isn't broken. Loved the NOOB video.
The probem is I think I flashed a dodgey ROM app and got scared half way through and tried to reset the phone to factory.
This is my Galaxy Note GT n7000. I have done a factory reset 3 times and believe I am well on my way to bricking my phone if I do this again.
All is good so far except the CAMERA.
I have downloaded the necessary HOTFILE STOCK ROM for NZ from your site but am now scared ****less to flash it.
Should I just give it back to the manufacturer and say DUH I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED and let them fix it
I also have GINGER BREAD 2.3.6 ROM Should I just flash this and hope for a fix
I also have ICS 4.0.4 XXLRG Should I Flash this after 2.3.6
Just need a little help and direction, as this is all quite new to me. Yes I'm sure this has all been done before and as I yell at my kids for doin stupid **** you deserve the same latitude.
Cheers ****
flash gb first.. after flashing the gb do a factory reset and then check your camera if it's working or not.. if you got lucky and got it working then flash a ics otherwise take it to manufacturer for repair.. don't mess up when you don't know what you are doing

Thanks for your reply, but if you look at the other reply it says to flash ics and NOT to do a FACTORY reset and you say to do the factory reset what is the risk of doing the factory reset
Not to sure which version of PHILZ modified Kernel to use Can you help with this
If you choose GB, it's safe. But ICS kernels have a bug which can brick the phone if a factory wipe is made. What abhinav said was to do a wipe in GB. Which is safe. What I told you was you can directly install the ICS rom but refrain from wiping till you install a safe kernel.
Go to OAD forum of note and you will see Philz thread. Download any ICS kernel like DDLRB and place on external SD. Then boot in to recovery and choose "apply update from external storage". Choose the zip file you downloaded. Once done boot into recovery again. Yubwill have Cwm. Now you have a safe kernel. You can do a factory wipe.

You have an ICS rom. You can use any ICS kernel by Philz. Use xxlrt or ddlrb
Flashing via odin will increase the counter and yellow triangle at boot. Best is to flash via recovery. Place the zip version of the kernel on ext sd card and boot into recovery

Do I need and unzip app? If I install this update will I have root access to run apps like Titanium Backup?
Or should I use the tar file in ODIN?
I do appreciate all your time and effort
What option did you select in recovery?
This is what you need to follow
1. Download the signed zip version of the kernel and place in external sd.
2. Boot into recovery and choose "apply update from external storage".
3. Choose the file you downloaded.
4. It will do the magic.
This will give you root access and yes apps like TB can be used. Also you will get CWM and it's a safe kernel too.
Dude he has done everything correct i know.. The v.3.99 of ics kernels are not built correctly when you flash them in stock ics recovery they always give a verification failed error.. But the older versions are ok to be flashed in stock ics recovery

Use the tar method only if u are confident enough
And yes you will be able to run applications like titanium backup
And for the flash counter just use triangle away
Search Google for it
All is well that ends well

It is just name of the ROM, and the developer writes you clearly in the first blue field, in the first text line:
Android Base CM10.1.3. RC1 JellyBean
JellyBean is not ICS (ICS is 4.0.x) so you need Gapps for CM10.1x / Android 4.2.x

Not sure whether to start a new thread or not so for the sake of making xda a little less cluttered i will first post my query here:
It refers to the RemICS ROM thread already mentioned

This looks like a great ROM and i would like to do a one time flash using Odin
Are there any install methods using Odin. I see there is a full download on the page but it appears to be for a I9003. Have searched all over and not seen anything as yet

This isn't meant to be flashed via Odin.
Download the rom + addons + gapps + CM9 (you don't need CM9 gapps). You can download the rom + addons from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075058
1.) Backup everything you need to- call logs, SMS, bookmarks, etc with Titanium or other methods of your choice
2.) Reboot into recovery. Perform the three wipe combo (data, cache, Dalvik)
3.) Flash CM9. You'll probably have to flash it twice- once for the kernel, another time for the rom. Let it boot.
4.) Once CM9 has booted, check that you still have reception.
5.) Reboot into recovery again and do the wipe combo. This time choose to flash the base rom. You'll need to flash it three times- once due to the incompatible partition (first flash overcomes this), another time for the kernel, a third time for the rom.
6.) Once the base rom's finished flashing, reboot. Check you still have your IMEI- you'll know if you still have reception.
7.) Reboot to recovery, flash addons (flash Addons then Addons_V1)
8.) Reboot
9.) Back to recovery (AGAIN), flash gapps.
Unfortunately a one-time flash with Odin isn't possible. But the endless flashes you have to do for RemICS V6 is well worth it

thx for reply
thx for your reply and apologies for getting back to you late.
If only i could do it the way you suggested but for some reason (me) i have messed the phone so that it now no longer is able to mount the external SDCard so putting the relevent zip files on the ext card is useless because in recovery mode using CWM these files fail to show.
I note that via CWM it shows the card as unmounted. If i try and do a mount it fails.
any ideas?
thx

What about your internal storage?

Here is where my noob-ness kicks in.
What internal storage is available by default on the Note1? Is it just the internal sdcard?
what puzzled me when I last flashed with odin (repeated it a number of times as I was trying to get the device to recognise ext sd card) to get the current Darky Extreme rom on (which is working fine no problem at all) is that there was still some relic directory structure left over. These were all empty folders visible when navigating within CWM. Didn't matter what type of formatting I did they wouldn't go. To summarise: much confusion and something got twisted.
So questions arising are:
-How to nuke the internal disk/card properly so there are no remnants prior to me doing another darky reinstall?
-Then, how to copy a zip file to internal card but still have it remain after the format and wipes that would precede a zip install?
-How to fix the device to mount the ext sdcard? FYI other sdcards can't be mounted either. I have tried 4 different ones. And here's the kicker-once booted I go to file manager and there I can see and access all the files/folders on the external card!!! So it's definitely a phone problem as opposed to a sdcard problem. Something got flagged along the line.
