Hi, I just wanted to share my (so far) great experience of returning my Nexus 7 for anyone thinking of doing so in the UK.
I have a 16GB with the screen lifting issue so I emailed support on July 20th explaining the issue and that I would like a replacement.
I wasn't expecting a reply any time soon, especially since they stopped taking new orders, but was hopeful that maybe they did this in preparation for all the replacements needed.
On the 23rd I received an email with details on how to return my tablet, with a link to a personal cart where my replacement order was already set up. This went smoothly and I got my order confirmation straight away. It was explained that once the replacement arrives, I would have 21 days to return the original and so an authorisation charge was placed on my card for the amount of the new unit, in case I didn't return it.
Again I was thinking it's not going to be here any time soon, but I was fine with waiting as long as I got my replacement.
Today (the 24th) I received an email confirming that my order has been shipped, complete with a tracking number from TNT!
Hopefully it will arrive in the next few days and I will be sure to post an update when it does.

Go to the Play Store website and click on "My Orders & Settings" at the bottom, then find your Nexus 7 and click "Help Center", then "Questions about my order", then select your country and "Returns and refunds".
I've heard nothing from the play store after asking for a return. That was nearly a week ago. Google are absolutely useless and I will never buy a device off the play store again. Ever.

Just had my replacement device despatched too (6pm).
Phoned google about it when it arrived last Thur, had email straight away, recieved RMA email Monday morning, placed order immediately, then recieved shipping info today.
Could be because mine was screwed ... dead touchscreen.

strange im on pc on chrome
I think the time of day you call has a bearing. I took no more than 5 mins to get through to both Asus UK and Google but I rang just after 8:00 on Saturday morning. I got the acknowledgement email within an hour (or so) and the promised 'within 24-48 hours' RMA email this morning.
While I think their communications during the order/pre-delivery stage left a fair bit to be desired I really cannot fault the support so far in trying to get me a replacement N7 that is fit for purpose. I feel for those who have taken ages to get through as I'd have been serious p'd off if it had been me. Waiting and waiting for the emails would also have been hugely frustrating.
Just my £0.02 worth
Please update us on what the replacement is like as I'm thinking of returning mine due to screen lift, but I don't want another the same.

I will do, I really hope the one I receive doesn't have the same problem or even worse something else wrong. Hopefully ASUS identified the problem and fixed it for new units.
Hi,
I received mine last Wednesday 17th (so that's almost 7 days in my possession), I have the screen lifting issue, but am yet to decide if it is bad enough to warrant asking for a replacement. I have yet to really test the cpu/gpu of this so will play games as a stress test. I think the lifting gets worse with the heat produced. btw Nvidia's Glowball App is good demo to quickly make someone go ooh.
Questions:
1) How bad was your lifting? How easy was it to decide from "meh, good enough" to " no way, this is going back pronto".
2) How confident are you of receiving a replacement that has no screen lifting issues?
If the returns seems as easy as you make out, it is making my decision easier. BTW do you have to return everything or do you get spare cable and charger out of this?

The lifting wasn't so bad at first, I probably wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't known to look for it. However it does seem to have gotten worse over time, I often get a creaking noise when I'm not purposefully pressing the bezel. For me it's a big annoyance because I know it's always there and even for £200 I want my device to be exactly as it was meant to be.
As for the replacement, I'm not too sure. Hopefully the speed at which they accepted my request and shipped a replacement out means that they know this is a common problem and have made sure it won't happen again. If I get another unit with the same problem I will be very disappointed in both Google and ASUS.
I'm assuming that I will receive a completely new package as they told me to return the old one in the original packaging.

Take care to avoid hoop jumping. In this case of 'defective goods' we have a right for refund or exchange with the seller (Google Play, Tesco, Currys).
This is different to a return "because I don't like it", which we have no legal right to. Of course most companies offer RMA because its standard practice and customer service.
Distance selling regulations is also disapplied once you open it (you can only do things that are reasonable as if you were physically inspecting goods in a real shop before committing purchase).
If they have none left for a replacement, I am somewhat content for a refund. I've had a taste of the tablet, I can always buy it again later, when I am confident issues have been fixed. But this is the worst case annoying option.
support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&answer=2411741&topic=2453057&ctx=topic#GB for info.
Its here!
Wow, its here already! That makes it just 5 days since I requested a replacement to me actually getting it delivered. Its looking good so far, no problems that I can see just from looking; definitely no screen lift at the moment (see the attached pics for comparison).
The only problem is I didn't receive a shipping label to use to send my old device back... I'll be contacting support about this soon.
1st, hope u to get the new one ASAP, then, u really give me encouragement to buy something.
Whilst you have both, are there any clues in serial numbers, or batch numbers on boxes or 'about tablet' that it is a different manufacturing batch or lot?
I'm assuming good manufacturing practice such as iso 9001 that products have traceability...
Take care to remain anon on forum.
Even if replacement has defects we still have the same statutory rights

Today is exactly 4 weeks since i lost my Nexus 7 16gb in the seatback pocket of a United airlines flight. I honestly thought it was lost forever and that i would never see it again. Spent the 1st 2 weeks checking lookout and trying to locate the device, but it had never connected to it since i lost it. United contacted me last week (3 weeks lost) asking for a description again and address. Well 2 days later they sent me a tracking number without ever calling or confirming it was my N7. I had no idea if they were sending me my tablet, someone elses, or just any tablet at all since they never confirmed anything, especially since they said it was found in Texas. I am glad to say my flawless N7 arrived today and it is in fact my exact N7. The cheap sleeve seem to hold up (was worried it would arrive with a cracked screen).

you know i considered that since my phone has all the same apps, but none of the passwords are displayed in the apps. All the passwords are asteriks, if you wanted to change it, i would of got a email. Granted the device was logged into both e-mail accounts, but i never got pushed any email for password resets. Well, judging by his handle, he probably is bipolar and has a serious lack of emotional regulation skills and, likely has a co-morbid personality disorder as well...going purely off the content and tone of his posts, I would make an educated guess it is borderline personality disorder which would explain the piss poor relational skills. Poor guy needs professional help.

I was disappointed to find the Play store broken and then the Nexus 4 sold out when it reappeared on the day of it's "launch".
Probably not as disappointed as the people who did place an order and then didn't get their phone and are still waiting though.
With no idea of when it's coming back into stock and the busiest shopping day of the year in the US tomorrow, the Nexus 4 is going to lose the traction in the media and minds of the public that it had.
If the rumors about no stock until December are true, a lot of people will buy something else. As it is, there are already new handsets appearing (like the HTC Droid DNA) and if we see similar shortages and a similar clusterf*** on the sales and fulfillment side of things, getting phones before Xmas could well be doubtful, certainly getting a defective phone could mean no chance of a return/replacement if being purchase for a Christmas present.
I had to laugh when many of the Android blogs are leading with a story about the official N4 bumper case... and the comments to those articles are full of anger from Google customers still waiting for the phone, never mind the case.
When do you call this "launch" more of a failure to launch?
As far as I am concerned, it's a FAIL.
I guess it depends on who's looking at it,right?

Yep. Point of view is key. Phone sold out in under an hour due to massive demand? People so eager to get their hands on it they resort to overpriced Ebay and store sales. That's a marketing department's wet dream.

It's easy to sell anything out if you only have a tiny number of them
And with no system for taking orders, no information of when new stock is arriving and in some cases no shipping date for people who did manage to order, I'd say a lot of that demand could trickle away.
They are certainly making Apple look good.
Another useless thread.... It is what it is. Starting another thread isn't going to fix anything.
As far as I'm concerned, this has already been a fail for Google. It is their second time they've failed miserably with the selling of a Nexus device. They just can't seem to learn...

If you can let us know how many Google had for sale that would be nice, as I take it you have the exact stock numbers to back that statement up.
The Nexus 4 is a marketing win for Google and the Android brand. Whether we get to use or like the phone is besides the point. Reviews of the glass sealed phone have been written and published. Done. On to the next Nexus phone for Google.

Why would I need the exact stock numbers? I just stated that when you introduce very few devices into the channel, it's easy to sell out and create the impression of big sales.
Apple have been doing this for years.
Did it take Google by surprise? That a phone they've been pushing... sorry... leaking, for 2 months and got blanket press coverage - which was then sold at an abnormally low price - sold out quickly.
Man, that is such a surprise! And after the Nexus 7 as well!
The big surprise is that 10 days later they still haven't got any more stock and are about to enter the run up to Christmas, with, yes, you guessed it, no stock and no word on when they will have stock.
I recommended the Nexus 4 to three friends, one of whom dropped their iPhone 4 into water at the end of last month and was looking for a replacement. They won't wait for ever and that guy went out and bought an iPhone 4S yesterday.

I have my N4 and the failure began on the 13th when Google didn't ship on a first come basis.
The failure continued with Google's refusal to acknowledge customer's complaints and did not relay correct information to support.
I understand how a big launch works and I understand **** happens, but Google's ignoring of the issues and leaving support to fend for themselves by lying does nothing but harm the reputation of the company and hurts the consumer.
I know I will think twice about ordering from the Play store again, I didn't learn my lesson with the N7.
Love this phone !!!
Only ones that are calling it a fail are ones that didn't get one,and tell the truth ID prob be right there pissed off 2 if i didn't get mine , but as soon as they become available agn those people will be first ones right there buying one . Google didn't fail Google did it exactly like they wanted to , its Google they do what they want

I would be, because as I mentioned above, I recommended this phone to other people.
Almost normal people.
You know - the kind of people who don't sit next to their browser hitting the refresh button 20 times a minute.
It's quite normal to sell out of a new device at launch. It's less normal to then have no stock for 10 days and no information.
(Although I grant you, it's quite normal for Google to not give information).
Sold out. Good phone. Therefore not a failure imo.
I though I'd make this page for all of us lucky winners so we can share updates on delivery etc. here instead of the main UK thread.

There was a tweet 2 hours ago which received a reply so I'd say your chances are good. you have to make sure you get it in-store and on a pay monthly contract to qualify!
Online and telephone orders don't qualify and I've seen that the tweets are ignored.

Had a look on eBay and there isn't any for sale, so I'm not sure how easy it's gonna be to resell, but I'll give it a go anyway. I've got a good TV anyway, so I'm purely involved just to get some cash back on the inflated price for the contract.
My missus got declined a TV. Done everything exactly like me but for some reason the morons said sorry not on this occasion. Bloody knobheads! She promptly returned the N4 to the nearest O2 shop.

the 10% ebay fees is really annoying so I don't think I would sell on ebay. I'm still on the fence on whether to sell it or keep the TV, my current TV is not as good but no one in my family really watches TV except my mum and I know she doesn't care for smart TV lol.

Link her tweet please? I remember seeing someones tweet who got it in-store on the £13.50 contract but only received a reply with a link to the T&C - have they changed again?

Bah.. caved and though might as well look at the O2 deal, and it finishes on 1st Dec. The chances that I could order a phone on the website and have it in my hand by then seem remote.

Should be pretty straightforward to sell it, it's a fantastic TV after all.
Winner here too
Well that sucks, because none of the local stores have any stock, or, as far as I could ascertain (the staff hadn't heard of the N4 and had to look it up) ever have.
That condition isn't in the T&C..
I had recieved a text explaining that the nexus 4 was finally available for purchase after being out of stock, this happened the day before yesterday. However, upon trying to order the device, it tells me that it will take 6-7 weeks to ship?!
this is garbage
I assume eventually that we will just be able to log in and order without them taking our money and holding it hostage for 2 months. This whole thing really left a bad taste in my mouth.
We are still not able to order the phone and it is ridiculous, 6-9 weeks
Lol.

Well they did say it was going back on stock noon on the 27th, and even if you ordered sometime later that day towards the night even, estimated shipping would have been 2-3 weeks. You're just a bit late. However the 8-9 might just be an overapproximation so I wish you luck.
EDIT: Oh, and also, I guess nothing Google does will ever be good for people. Making more phones than needed/ having unsold phones in the warehouse is the worst thing ever, while having just enough is good, and running out too soon is bad, but not as bad as having more phones than needed. From Google's or any company's standpoint, that is.
With the initial launch, they tried to meet demand (which they obviously didn't) and they made a lot of mistakes which everyone very strongly expressed. Mistakes such as the fact that there was no real preorder option, and that we never knew what time that the phones were going to be sold, and the fact that the entire stock sold out in one hour without anyone else being able to do anything afterwards, and the fact that we wouldn't even know when the second batch would be out.
When they brought out the second batch, they actually ended up listening to everything and taking into consideration (which is very unusual for most companies). They told us when it was coming out, the time exactly, the country, the phones didn't sell out in one hour as they came in with a bigger batch, and in a weird way, they implemented the pre-order system for people who missed out initially. And of course, now people aren't happy that there is the pre-order system and prefer that it just show "Not In Stock." Google's been somewhat remarkable through this. Yes, they messed up a lot, but they did listen and try their best to fix the situation. And all for a phone they're barely profiting off of. Coming from a Samsung phone and a Lenovo tablet, both companies have been treating their customers with the devices in the opposite manner and my respect for Google only grows (and that of their customers, slightly diminishes.)
Count yourself lucky. The rest of the world can't even place orders yet.
You snooze you lose.
Email Google Play Customer Support to get the MORE REALISTIC time period. The thing on that page is s#it. It will automatically increase as the number of people will pre-order.
Here's what i got from Play support -
Orders are shipped based on the estimate in your order confirmation email. Once an order has been processed you'll receive a second ship confirmation email with your tracking number. It may take 24 hours for the package tracking to return any information for your tracking number.
If you have not received a package tracking number after the time quoted in your order confirmation email, please let us know.
According to our records, your order should ship by the evening of December 19.
Neuxs 4 backorders: Please note that the above date is based on typical shipment processing and does not apply to Nexus 4 backorders. Nexus 4 backorders are being delivered based on the order in which they were received. If you receive a shipping confirmation email, then you will be able to track your delivery.

When I order on the 27th, 9 minute after they open for order. The shipping time was at 1-2 weeks. I got a shipping confirmation on the 30th, so you might received your early.
It's called a pre-order. If you don't want to wait then don't buy it?

What was the shipping time in the order confirmation email ? 2-3 weeks ?
I cant get my head round why people are moaning. This is a $600 device going for half price. Of course demand is going to outstrip supply. I wanted mine NOW so I went and paid £150 more than Google Play's RRP! These phones are available, if you really want it, go out and pay the prevailing market rates and not moan and wait on Google subsidised ones.

I'm going to simply present a few facts and see if I am the only one reaching the same conclusion.
1. On 14 April 2016 I ordered the first of 2 "Live Cases" for the Nexus 6P, and the order was sent to Google's factory.

2. On 16 April 2016 I received an alert from my bank (which never happens) asking me to review suspicious transactions:
These were the transactions, all in the city of "Shenzhen", China, including a hotel stay costing me $1,892:
Plotting the locations on a map shows where the fraudster traveled between:
3. On 18 April 2016 I received a tracking update from Google revealing the order had shipped from "Shenzhen", China. In addition, the tracking website displayed a map of the pick-up location (presumably the Google factory). Note the proximity of the pick-up pushpin to the fraudulent purchases above:
Obviously setting up my new card everywhere has been hugely inconvenient, not to mention nearly being defrauded by some $2000.
I do not believe Google share the credit card info with the factory. But it is not impossible that there may be some vulnerability in the order system whereby a factory order processing worker may have been able to access the info. Or the info may have unintentionally been included on a docket, etc. Plenty of possibilities, including coincidence.
I have notified the Google Store team and await their response. I will update this thread if anything of substance comes back from them.

Or, or maybe just maybe your WiFi connection wasn't protected. Or, someone stole your card number whilst shopping some places else and this was just a major coincidence...

First response from Google which I've challenged:
I am really sorry about this, but we couldn't detect any unauthorized charges from our end. I would request you to get in touch with your bank immediately or the financial institution the card is associated with and check the status. It would be great if they could help you with a transaction ID for the specific charges and provide more information regarding the same.

Seems like you been scanned or getting your credit card info stolen.
This can be due to
1. Open WiFi
2. Bad applications installed.
3. Really bad luck?
4. Hijacked session?
Sorry to hear that too, we should wait and see if someone has the same issues.
Maybe the site was hijacked? Idk

One major question.
Why would Google send your credit card information to a manufacturer? That makes no sense. You pay Google, Google pays the manufacturer some of the money, you get your case made. The manufacturer doesn't get the whole $35, Google gets it, then pays a rate per order probably at the end of the month/quarter, never should the factory see your credit card number.

You did, with one sentence. I'm not sure why it would be on a docket slip, since the CC info would not be useful, that would be a major screw up, one that would cost a few people their jobs. Also it could be a vulnerability in the order processing, but same with any order you placed online, so it would not necessarily be from ordering at Google. It just seems highly unlikely that your card would be stolen by Google or leaked by Google, much more likely it was a coincidence.
I once had my credit card info stolen, was used to by pizza in Richmond VA which is on the other side of the US. I assumed an ATM skimmer or some other technique was used, for my ~$60 back and had to input my new info for s month or so when I paid bills. I didn't assume some company with a tie to Richmond stole it.
Also, almost everything you buy is manufactured in shenzen China.

Thank you for reporting the unauthorized charges on your credit card, and for providing the location where the charges were incurred. You are correct that Google does not share full payment info with merchants so this incident is unusual. We take this type of feedback very seriously and our team is investigating your case.
We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Final response from Google:
Thank you for your patience while we looked into this issue.
A few different teams at Google have independently investigated the incident, and have verified that there has been no information security leak of payments credentials to the manufacturer through the purchase of your Live Case. Though very odd that this happened in the same province as where the phone was manufactured, we are not able to find a link with Google.
Thank you again for taking the time to report this issue.
