DODOcase HARDcover for Nexus 7 (Smart Cover) - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hey guys my coworker showed me this case today and wanted to share it with you all!
It's the DODOcase HARDcover for the Nexus 7. It's almost like the treegloo cases but I like this one a little bit better. It looks nice and I like the fact that there isn't an entire wooden frame surrounding the device but instead it's held up by an adhesive. Very nice and slim as well.
It also has smart cover functionality.
Check it out at:

Very nice, but it might be too late for me to cancel treegloo

Hmmm...$35 for the shell of a book and an adhesive? That seems really steep for something that wouldn't have much protection.
I got a treegloo for the same price and it comes with the wood frame, not to mention there were a crazy number of colors. I wonder if it's worth emailing them to see if they could make something like this...

Lol!! My thoughts exactly. It doesn't have enough coverage around the tablet and if that's the highest it can go as a landscape stand, try again..

Ehhh, there is no protection for the N7 with this case. The idea of using a reusable adhesive doesn't appeal to me at all, I really don't want to have to wipe my case down with water so that it can keep getting sticky. Nor do I like the lack of customzation. I do however, really like the matching elastic band and liner.

This and a tpu case together would work but sadly I see them becoming extinct fairly soon.

Anyone tried ordering the Potenzo version of this case for the Nexus 7 yet? It has the full features as on the iPad versions.
http://shop.portenzo.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=bookcase-for-nexus

Can't justify this kinda of money for a case that offers little to no protection. Just because you can customize it doesn't make it worth $40-$50.

They have the patent on rectangle, they could always use it.
Now they just need to get the patents on, gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, magnetic field, orientation, linear acceleration, ambient light, gravity and any of the other sensors in the Nexus 7...
As I see it, I understand why 55% of the manufacturers have agreed to pay Microsoft some sort of "licensing" fee..
It's like a block of merchants in the mall, that are being threatened by one of the larger anchor stores (apple) because they sell similar products and take potential customers away from them. Then comes in the local gang (microsoft) offering "protection" in exchange for extortion monies..
Allowing them in a sense to be protected by a larger portfolio of patents and deeper unified pockets.
Slide to unlock, voice actions, really?!

This case looks dope.

Asus has been doing this for a while. My Asus Transformer has a magnet under the screen that turns it off and on. The Samsung Galaxy 10.1" had the same thing. Samsung even had a straight Smart Cover rip off and everything... and they DID get sued (the 3rd party company).
Laptops have been doing this for a long time now... and even Blackberry phones. Apple has nothing on this "tech" except maybe for the design (held on by magnets).

Probably one of the better looking cases that I've seen so far. Really tempted on purchased it. Just a little weary about the adhesive that is being used.
Hmm..just thought about this. Since there isn't a wood housing like the treeglo case. It can be repurposed for future 7" tablets.

They were not the first ones to offer this functionality
BlackBerry had this with their holsters for years before iPhones or iPads every walked the face of the planet
Let's hope that reason and sensibility prevails

Check out Portenzo. Better than DODO and treegloo from what I read so far. Started a thread about it already.

Does anyone have this case? I really like the design, I am just a bit concerned with the adhesive grip. Although I guess the elastic strap would help keep it in place while closed

I went ahead and ordered this case, I will post a little review once it comes in. If anyone is interested, they can use this code for 10% off: C120726-Q3XNPH7

Caved in and purchased one too. Hopefully it comes soon.
Also 10% discount code: C120726-DGNH4LK

Was going to purchase a dodo but decided I'm going with portenzo.

There are three strips of a tape of sorts inside. It holds really well, I can tug on the tablet, shake the case, no problem.

Build your own case for the nexus7, choose the colours etc.. amazing....
oh, and every case is built with a magnet in the lid for smart screen!
I went all black with Manhattan Blue line colour... looks very nexus7
Yeah, we have discussed this case in several other threads.
I went with the Red + white elastic and purple cloth interior
+1 I spoke with them since Sunday regards to the kinetic clip/stand and smart cover which will be included. A bit pricey but I think worth the pennies I earn to have a unique, one-of-a-kind case (well to me lol).

Man you're advertising this everywhere lol. I preordered mine a few days ago. Can't wait.
Black outside, natural wood, yellow cloth inside and kinetic latch!!
Can't wait. I asked how long it'll take she said ships july 30, probably take 2 days to get to Cali.
It does definitely looks nice. I think I will order one for my nexus 7. Black covering, ebony wood trim, gray lining with a white elastic band closure strap.
just ordered mine. black exterior, ebony wood, apocalypse blue inside and kinect latch
Ooo i don't know, it looks great but also looks like a lot of extra bulk
Mad Midnight case, Ebony Frame, Knight Gray Cloth, and Black elastic.
I thought about the kinetic latch but with all the other tablets I have had, the cases that stand up were never really used.
Man, I am really tempted. Bit pricey, but I love the moleskin style and these seem like top quality. Hmm ....

Yeah I figure this is my "warranty" seems pretty protective and it looks really nice. Their customer service seems really good too, received a email reply the next day and they are active on their G+ and Twitter.
Edit: From their G+ in response to a question about the speaker and mics
"
We're so glad someone asked this, because we put a lot of R&D into it. We will be posting updated photos of the Nexus 7 case design very soon.
The speaker aligns with the bottom ledge of the frame, which helps direct the sound toward the user through the bottom port. It actually sounds better in the frame than when it's sitting on its own.
Regarding the mics, this really has to do with how we engineer our frames from the beginning. The rubber corners and accents allow for airspace around the device itself where the mics are located. This airspace is exposed to the wood, which helps capture sound.
"
They answered my query regarding magnetic lid very fast as well, wanted to make sure it was include regardless of latch/elastic strap, it is.
I did a bit of research about them and the general feel was bad quality for their ipad cases, but that was a few years ago. People had issue with the corners being quite blocky and the ipads falling out, but looking at the images online and on their facebook it seems a lot has changed since then
I did some research before making my order and I couldn't find anything from 2012 it seems. Which I think is ok since most posts are usually complaints. Some things I found were about shipping delays which I think they have fixed. But I did find posts where they did try to fix issues and I think they have been redesigning to make sure any past issues have been addressed.
Those do look like excellent cases, but man, $50 for a case for a tablet that cost $250. I'll have to ponder this one a bit.
Saw some of the shipping mentions too, but as stated they were older. I will be having to exchange my device in the near future, so really considering it ... this is where I'd like to see some user feedback / photos.

I couldn't bring myself to spend this much on a case, especially when I'm holding out for the docks to be released. I would dislike taking it out of the case to put it on the dock, as well as the added thickness and weight.
I hope i don't break my nexus 7 before the case comes..

I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on an epic black exterior, ebony wood, Old World Atlas interior print, and a Kinetic latch. Damned nice looking, even for the quoted 64.95.
i've found the same as everyone above. I would like to mention there are quite a few similar cases to this, not sure how many are making nexus 7 cases, but I did just email pen and quill. I also saw beaconcase.com and portenzo, but they are all about $50-$60....i'd go as high as $40 I think, but 50 and 60 is really getting up there, it would have to be a really good quality for me to pay 1/5 of the price of the tablet.....
Update from Portenzo:
We are so thankful to have customers who demand a well thought out, high quality product over instant gratification. We are looking into it. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates.
Thanks!

OFF TOPIC:
You talk about price, now I have started using vaja cases from my days of the PDA Sony Clie days and I still have this case this very day. Argentinian leather and top notch craftsmanship for protection. Its EXPENSIVE, but the leather and product I can def vouch for. They take about 3-4 weeks for custom orders which is awesome IMO and coming from Argentina, is pretty cool. Here's a pic below of an example of what they can do. I have posted a question on their G+ account about making cases for us. (well more begging lol).
This is an example of one of their more expensive cases for the ipad2. I personally don't like the texture and I am not a pink/fusia person, but some do (reminds me of the Soul headphone pads in the Ludicrous lines lol)

The Good:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Totally customizable
- Holds case firmly
- Elastic Strap holds firm
- Internal pocket for storage
- Buttons mostly accessible
The Bad:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Adds a surprising bit of bulk (far less than the Blurex, but more than the Belkin)
- The Design Process vs. final product (more on that in a bit)
- Not a smart cover
The Unknown:
- Durability
Review:
I love the XDA forums around the time of a device launch. Yeah, you get an influx of short term users and forum complaints, but the place overall reflects the unadulterated joy of geek-fanboy-ism in a primarily positive way. Moreso than most of the internet.
As we all watched accessories roll in, I decided this would be the "pricier" case I decided to take the plunge on in hopes it would be my "final" case. I am an obsessive customizer/tinkerer, so it was a pretty easy decision. I decided on a pretty simple design that I thought would compliment my overall device theme (at least for the time being).
This is largely where my biggest complaint comes in, which I think is demonstrated by the screenshot below:
It is important to note that I chose to have the order altered to incorporate the black strap (as opposed to the white), however the overall base color is simply not similar. I didn't agonize over the design, and used stock background as opposed to a provided image file, so I definitely did not take full advantage of the customization - but still feel the colors don't match up particularly well.
That said, the print is high quality (especially given that all the imagery I provided had a fair degree of transparency to it, I wasn't sure it would turn out the greatest), the sturdy feeling recycled neoprene has a nice worn texture to it, and in general I still think it is an incredibly attractive case.
The fill seems to be some sort of either recycled cardboard, pressboard, or plastic. It does flex easily, but doesn't feel bent easily (if that makes sense). Overall, this is an area where only time will tell, but I'd say I'm leaning on the optimistic side. It certainly does not feel as though it's about to fall apart, and the stitching on the neoprene is absolutely top of the line. Incredibly well done.
The lack of smart cover functionality is a bit disappointing, however, I had no expectation it would have one when I ordered it. There was no mention of it on the site, anywhere, and I did not choose to clarify. I had purchased the Blurex smart case immediately on ordering my N7, and when I ordered this case decided if necessary, I would do a bit of surgery with an exacto knife to extract the magnet. I will update this thread with my success to this end, but it is certainly encouraging to have the pocket sewn inside already, as I'm fairly certain it will be simple to stitch the magnet into this case.
tl;dr aka Final Thoughts:
At $40, this was not necessarily a cheap case, but in my opinion very reasonably priced. Turnaround time was definitely satisfactory, and my interactions with their customer service department were very prompt and courteous. It holds very comfortably in the hand.
While it would be foolish to estimate how it will wear over time, I feel like it's going to hold up just fine for my use.
Looks nice! For $40 that didn't sport a smart cover/magnet option....kinda suXors IMO
But I do like the look and it doesn't look very bulky at all. I'd be on the fence on this one but because of the lack of the smart cover, that would be a pass on my book. But I know some who don't like the smart cover option, this may appeal to them.

In reality, it's not that bulky - I just feel like adding any bulk to sleeker devices like this kind of ruins the form factor - so it's not just this case, I struggle with almost all of them.
The smart cover will likely be a deal breaker for a lot of people. My advice to anyone considering ordering one of these is simply to contact them and see if they have any plans on implementing the magnet in future designs. They replied to my email within 24 hours, were very courteous, and I imagine it's something they more than likely do plan on implementing. I'm just an early adopter
And I don't mind hacking my own together. We've got a sewing machine, fabric, and a magnet already - why not?

True, that's an option, but I prefer the reliability of a hardware solution, particularly when I already have the hardware.
I know someone who used to work at Caseable. I got a free custom Touchpad case (technically iPad case, but it fits the same) because of it. Never used it though. As much as I liked my custom design, it wasn't really a 'case'. Just a book-like cover, and a strap in each corner to secure it. I'd rather have something that snaps onto the back of the device like most cases.
I am waiting for mine to arrive, I thought the corners were rounded? It looks nothing like in the pictures on their site!

Yeah it does there... When I ordered mine there were different pictures in that spot, showing a blue and orange one, as well as the pink colorful one I ordered, and those looked narrower across and with more rounded corners, the way it does in the image where you choose the pattern. I still can't wait to get mine though, I'm sure ill still like it (and will add my own magnet of course)

Definitely a bit different, and way different than the design app makes it look for sure.
On playing with it throughout the day, though, I definitely think I am pretty happy. My gripes are largely superficial to this point.

First of all, I feel like I got ripped off, this case is nothing but annoying, the flappy door always get in the way even when its flipped around to the back,
you think they would atleast have put a magnet on the door so it has another purpose as a smart cover, I feel like they rushed it, and it's barely worth 10$, let alone 19.99$+Shipping. I would rather have a 10$ leather or tpu case from ebay.
I wanted to state my opinion and get the forums opinion, how do you feel about it?

Not trying to be, but when you spend almost 30$ on something that is worth 7.99$, and is nothing but a bother, yea, im a tad bit mad, but not too much, just got annoyed and decided to make a rage thread about the case.
Not saying its trash but certainly isn't worth the price (prob worth like $15 shipped? Maybe $10 and $15-20 if it had a sleep function)
i saw a video review of it on Youtube a couple weeks ago and it looked cheap. Reminded me of a TPU case with a flap.
I'd buy it off you for $15 shipped.
Overall I like it, EXCEPT for one really annoying flaw: The hinge is WAY too stiff and it keeps trying to close itself if you fold it behind the device.

Hm, make it 19$, and ill ship it to you, and thats me loosing like 8-9$ in a day.
I'm surprised anyone bought it. The first time I looked at the Nexus 7 I quickly looked for accessories for it on the Google Play website, looked at the cover ... said NO, looked at the extra power adapter, said NO for the second time.
Everyone knows there would be a flood of covers and other things for the device in a short while.
It's a pos ripoff. Much better out there at half the price.

Maybe I should put some Elmers glue on mine, and sprinkle some glitter on it, or put some crazy eyes on it.
In hindsight (being what it is), Asus admitted that more of these sold than expected. The price reflects a premium on brand, and it was very plain what these were going to be like from the pictures. They looked like basic silicone with no added features, and they are. Asus said nothing about the sleep feature of the Nexus 7. There was no reason to believe that their cover would take advantage of it.
Had I bought one of these, I also would feel ripped off. Not by Asus or Google, but by my inability to hang on to my $20 based on the facts at hand.

Actually I kind of liked how it looked from the pictures - what the pictures don't show is how badly it handles trying to put the flap behind the device.

The look is nice, but what you bring up is what I immediately thought when I saw it for the first time. There's nothing to hold the cover back and it's not hinged in any way. Asus even had pictures of it splayed out on a flat surface. A video would have made it apparent for sure, and like I say... I could have been wrong at the time. I simply put my bet on the other color.
Did you watch the numerous video reviews on this forum that said the cover sucked balls before you bought it?

I agree and am not arguing with you, but I'm just wondering if you can name any hazardous material that isn't lead.
most if not all these low tech gadget accessories are made from similar materials at more or less crappy working environments by workers that are not so well compensated, that's just business, no sense of over compensating someone when you get get the same for less
point being that you could have paid 20 bucks for a case yet you will never know for sure if they mistreat their worker or used materials that are otherwise harmful to your body
while i see your point, i guess the false sense of getting better quality when paying extra or by buying brand name is something that i disagree with
by the way, it is just a tablet case, not a baby feeding bottle or health supplement, even if they did use something that can possibly be harmful to our body, i doubt it will have any significant health effects before the case or tablet become obsolete
my 2 cents

with this case thats false it does not do that. i have the case and love it. and the smell everyone is talking about is due to the fact its fake leather fyi and its in a tight package. ive had mine for a while now the odor smell went away after a day being out of the package.

Seems nice. Thx for heads up.
Nice. I always wanted something like this but with a flap for the front.
I want more reassurance that the magnets will have no ill effects. Otherwise an awesome idea.

We researched extensively in magnets (magnet size, thickness, pull force, finish, vendors, performance relationship affected by distance) and optimized the best magnets to achieve the performance that we required. We've tested our Nexus 7 tablets extensively with various magnets in the prototype cases for almost three months, and have definitely concluded that there are no adverse side-effects.

Encouraging.
Is that stand a separated piece?... (Never mind... I just saw the video) I like the case, but I'd want a built-in kickstand... Very promising minimalistic approach. I'd be happy with a skeleton case like the one shown with a built-in kickstand and separated invisible screen shield.
EDIT: Short of having a built-in plastic kickstand... can a separated (detachable) stand be made mostly of plastic with metal where it needs to be attached to the back of the case. Also if the stand was fold-able or made with a hinge so that it can be easily placed in a pocket or attached magnetically (flat) to the back of the case.

There is absolutely NO components inside the Nexus that could be affected, other than the compass chip, which in itself is non-ferrous, so it won't be damaged even by the most powerfull magnet you could come up with. The only ferrous parts in the Nexus is the shielding cans and the mounts for the USB connector.
So you can place whatever magnets on the Nexus without any chance of damage.
// Per.
The Kickstarter funding has failed, a shame really.

I agree. I ended up going with something that protects a bit better. Cool idea, and I probably would have bought one. Maybe someday they will get the startup.
Make something similar with a flap for the front so you can use wake on open. This design failed because it didnt have that.

And a couple posts back someone basically said the deal breaker for them was no built in kickstand. There is no one reason it failed other than we didn't help enough with the startup.
We all have our own reasons we didn't give them money to help them start this up. I wonder how far they were from getting off the ground?

Hi, one of the founders of Less Case.
Hey guys. Just googling about the less case and saw this thread come up . Longtime lurker, first time poster (android user since the G1 days).
The project moving forward was contingent upon the kickstarter campaign succeeding (obviously), so unfortunately we're not pursuing this product anymore.
Just to talk about some of the things being brought up in this thread...
Me and my 2 buddies that were making this really debated about the kickstand integration. There were many reasons why we decided to leave it out of the design, at least for the "version 1". Primarily, the case was initially designed to be as thin but durable as possible. Adding a kickstand to the Less case would have required considerable amount of redesign and re-prototyping. I know it sounds trivial "just add a kickstand"....Problem was, if it was plastic, we'd have to add extra thickness to the entire case to make the rest of it uniform thickness to where the stand folded back into the case. We could solve the rigidity issue of the kickstand by making it metal, but then our manufacturer was solely a plastics maker, and the logistics of sourcing a metal manufacturer, then adding post assembly would have taken it to a cost and timeline we weren't comfortable with. I'm sure we could have come up with the solution, but it was a matter of time and money management.
At the end of the day, the primary idea was to be able to slap this thing on any metal surface, so the ROI of adding a kickstand didn't add up. Double the project time, more cost, to accommodate what's essentially a "secondary" feature. I know a lot of people would disagree, but we had to weigh the pros and cons, and it just eeked towards "no kickstand" a bit more.
Also, for those talking about a cover, we had that planned. It was contingent upon the success of the initial case, and Kickstarter doesn't allow us to show anything that hasn't been already made. So we couldn't include the idea in our campaign. For me, the cover we had planned was the best part, so it was unfortunate we couldn't share it to potential kickstarters.
Here's some early mockups we did of how the cover would work...
(See attachments) If thats not working, just go to lesscase.com/pics and click on the files. Can't post images yet
Basically the thin plastic arm would connect magnetically to the back, and since the Nexus 7 is primarily a "portrait" device, we figured it would be good to have the cover be vertical, almost like a journalists notepad (which by the way we were going to make it look like that, kind of retro'ish). The plan was to input weak flat magnets inside the cover to activate the Nexus 7 sleep/wake functions which we tested, and worked.
The beauty of the case was that it's just like the iPad case, in the sense that it can stay on all day when you need it, but if you want to use the tablet sans-cover, you can easily snap it on and off w/ magnets. The fact that you could do this allowed you to re-purpose the tablet quickly and easily depending on how you wanted to use it. Take the case off, then car mount it, put the case back on, etc.
Anyways... it was fun to work on while it lasted. We had big plans, but they didn't flesh out . Thanks for the conversation!
Welcome to the forum, wussyib, and thanks for sharing some insider's info.
A real shame the campaign didn't succeed.
