Hi Guys,
I am currently running the CM7 ROM (7.1.0.6 Milestone-KANG) on my Milestone. While the ROM is much better and faster than the stock ROM it still gets slow and laggy sometimes (Overclocked to 800 MHz).
Please let me know which the are fastest Gingerbread based ROMs out there and is there anything else that can be done to increase the responsiveness of the device.

Try HO!NO 7.1.1. It is build from kabaldan source, Android 2.3.7 and I love it

Ultimate Milestone (formerly Ice and Fire) is the fastest ROM i've used.
i used ultimate mod (ice and fire) but switchted to HO!NO! then.
i had trouble with minfree settings (check thread) that it killed my apps...
HO!NO! is even faster, more beautiful (i love this ICS design and transitions) and reliable (not killing any app). i only had to adjust permissions in OR once.

OK it looks nice but the phone is slow and lags a lot.
Stock froyo ROM with setcpu works faster, you must admit it.
I flashed my milestone with HO!NO! after reading this thread but i`m dissapointed.
I think I`ll give a try with a vanilla cyanogenmod

where i find vanilla cm rom to milestone?
Ultimate Milestone (formerly Ice and Fire), is my best. Only complaint was camera (as with any CM7 based), then downloaded MIUI Camera and I'm done!
If you are open to something else.... the FASTEST rom out there is by far TelusLite (eclair and no longer developed) but if you want brute speed... that is the way to go.

i used CM6 from milaq 6.3.x - 6.3.4).... very fast and "low" RAM usage
then switched to CM7... it works well too but i feel the RAM usage when opening apps like MAPS to navigate or want to play some games. navigation browser and apps may close without warning...
then tried again milaqs CM6 (6.3.6)... it was ok but RAM usage is not good as the versions before...
i recommend milaqs 6.3.3 or 6.3.4... these two are ok, fast and you can use the most apps withouts errors.... and with supercharger you can get 60-70MB free RAM
IMHO, HO!NO! is the fastest ROM with moderate amount of RAM. I've tried all other ROMs like CM7, Ultimate Milestone, CM6, Cronos, MIUI... but they couldn't meet my need as HO!NO! does.
Ok it was like 2.3 works pretty smooth on the outside but gets really lag when you actully use any apps. 2.2 roms are much better but there's always a hard choice on which 2.2 is better since now most developers are focusing on 2.3

I am currently using CM9 RC0 (built from source myself) and must say, despite the very early status I like it even better than the excellent CM7.1! It still has a few issues (e.g. keyboard backlight and camera don't work, though I think there is a fix for the former), however, overall, it feels much smoother to me. As always with our old Milestones, the biggest issue is memory... When limiting background apps to two, I have very little issues with that anymore.
Keep in mind though that this ROM is not intended for daily use, so you need to be as crazy as I am (remember, no camera)

i recommend HO!NO! for milestone.. it works smooth and fast.. of course it comes with a great battery life

Not unless he's made a Droid version as well. Milestone and Droid ROMS are not interchangeable.

Thanks a lot guys for your suggestions. i tried most of the ROMs but found Ho! No! to be the fastest. Even at 600 MHz the ROM is quite fast and smooth.
In fact I have been having a small problem with Ho! No! ROM. I am in India on AIRTEL 3G. Whenever I switch to 2G Network I tend to loose signal and after sometime the signal gets completely lost. If I remain in 3G only everything works fine but battery usage is obviously more. Moreover, recently after HO! NO! CM 7.1.3 I am not getting 3G speeds while internet browsing while being on 3G network.
Do I need to change my radio according to India (where to find the same and how to do it?)
I didn't have any such problems on CM 7!!!
Hi Folks, I'm currently running JW4 on Semaphore 2.7.4bmfr, bloatware removed, custom theme, UOT icons and effects, various hacks. This Rom is very fast (no lags), fast accurate GPS, I can multitask due to lots of free memory, everything simply works, it never, ever has SOD's or FC's. It looks good and has great battery life.
I'm been considering upgrading to ICS and have been reviewing all of the ROM's. I've discovered that all ICS Roms all seem to have many issues, and to get to this hassled state, requires lots of flashing, wipes and rewipes.
Hmmmm, my (genuine) question is, why should I upgrade to ICS? What does ICS provide over my current fast, stable, long lasting ROM?
It has to be something more than the way it looks (I mean the OS only exists to run your applications) Guess you might say, just try it and you'll see (which means you have no solid reply, it also means I have to spend hours and hours flashing one or more ICS Rom's before deciding, Damn! I need to go back to JW4 as ICS is too slow/buggy/dodgy battery etc. Hence the reason for this question.
Very good question, i've been wondering the same myself as i'm still running cm7.

You should stay on GB . To be honest, I only stay on ICS, because my titanium backups don't work on GB. But I think the difference isn't big.

totally agree.ICS can beat gingerbread in many ways
Face recognizition (i know gingerbread have this but its better on ics)
better UI speed (because of Ui now can use GPU)
and many things i cant remember now.
and about free ram..236 mb free..
now which is better?only better way of gingerbread is multitasking.and ics can beat in several ways.

with regards to speed, i would have to say that ICS has the edge; I have never had such a smooth experince while browsing and multitasking on GB as I do on ICS. I am currently using DK3 with Devil2 0.71 sio w/ ondemand gov w/ sampling down step @ 5.

I get at least 24 hours usage with ICS. Switching isn't too much hassle, backup with titanium, do a nandroid in CWM, wipe, install ics rom, boot, restore titanium backups.
If anything goes wrong or you want to go back: flash stock JW5, flash kernel with recovery, restore nandroid.
Ics has some features that take your device to a next level.The only think that I don't like is the battery drain.

Im comparing Slim ICS with Darky 10.4.2
With ICS you get better UI experiences.. Smooth and fast..
Browsing is much, much better..
Easy customizable toggles
Easy screenshot
What I dont like:
Camera sucks(less features), cant silent
Battery drains faster
1 lockscreen
Cant join contacts
When ppl call in, picture gets truncated
Default Gallery cant play my AVI files
I will try other ICS roms and decide whether to stick with ICS..
Sure you can join contacts use contapps! I find it the best to sync and join contacts.
+ it has free sms to other contapps users

You don't know what you are saying.
I already used several releases of ICS (AOKP, AOSP, DK, MIUI) and the camera is great and you can silent. About drains, it happen, but depend the type of use. Why you need a different lockscreen? You can join contacts, i already done that. About contact pic, there is another method to override that, it calls HaxSync, by default google don't store high-res pic in contacts.
I'll stay on stock XXJW4.. Satisfies my needs and camera is awesome xD. And I can play several HD games that won't run on ICS

Both have qualities and lacks... with GB and its roms come a superb battery-life, ICS lets you reach evening with a (not much) strong use, but nothing more.
I upgraded to ICS for curiosity, and the only thing i miss is ofc that feature. Wouldn't ever return to GB though: the rest is better on ICS, from UI to browsing
I could never think of going back to a GB rom...
First, with ICS, I finally have that feeling of maturity that the OS wasn't able to provide with previous release.
Second, hardware acceleration alone is worth the switch IMHO.
Third, RFS on Samsung's roms... can't stand it's performance degradation over time and lagfixes are just like Band-aid on an open fracture.
Fourth, kernel devs have pretty much all moved to developping ICS versions of their kernel leaving GB versions to lag behind.
Yes there are a few glitches here and there, but nothing that can prevent me from doing whatever I used to do on Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread.
The biggest issue with ICS is with deep idle and that's only if you use your phone to listen to music... which is not my case. But then again, if you take some time to read carefully, it is possible to make work quite easilly.
As for the camera thing... you need to compare apples to apples!
As far as I can tell, the camera app used in each and every ICS builds out there is the AOSP camera whereas the camera app in Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread roms is the one developped by Samsung... not the AOSP one.
Finally, with respect to battery life, i'm using team ICSSGS RC4.2 with Semaphore 1.0.0s kernel and, really, I can't really see any difference. I get the usual 24-30h of battery life I always had before.
There is a lot of truth in many of the posts for and against GB/ICS. I was extremely happy with Darky's ROM, but after seeing the amount of devs playing with ICS I finally took the plunge. ICS I have to say has not been smooth. Many things work well as has been mentioned already e.g. smooth UI etc. But for me few of the many ICS variants work 100% compared to the stabilty of DRom 10.4.2 or JW4 with Semaphore.
My vote for the best ICS variants are Slim ICS as it is stripped down and works and EXTRAOrdinary ICS which is an AOSP. However even with these, the battery life is not as good I have found with GB. Also using a bluetooth car receiver somehow keeps on FC ICS.
I believe the Semaphore Kernel is still the best although I am now trying Icy Glitch.

hl note core is adapted speedmod so use same versions of speedmod when doing so

I've used both, and prefer glnotecore (have beenn off speedmod about 3 wks). On my note, it is smoother, more stable, and faster. I also get great batt life for this level of performance. Of course, we're finding that there are some fairly significant variances note-to-note, so you really need to test both on your phone to know what works best for you, but I can attest to notecore's overall performance. Fwiw, I'm using same dev's latest rom (cleannote) along with latest kernel (6.1, which is not speedmod-based). If you're using a rom with lots of scripts and tweaks, then notecore isn't for you as it is optimized without such items (read thread to learn more about why). It may also not be for you if you're looking for lots of mods... dev is focused on performance and stability without trendy bells and whistles. Hope this is helpful to you.
Think of them like this:
SpeedMod = original Samsung Kernel but "safe"
NOTECORE = customized Samsung Kernel and "safe"
If you're going to use the Stock TouchWizz ROM with minimal changes, go for SpeedMod, it should be more stable.
If you want to customize your NOTE with a TouchWizz-based ROM, go for Notecore, you can underclock the min frequency (save battery), then overclock max freq (faster), then undervolt it slightly (save even more battery). Then use a more effecient governor like InteractiveX or Ondemand (save battery without losing performance). Then you can overclock the gpu, and get smooth performance with the ChainFire3D plugin.
Then again, if you really want ultimate customization... you'll need AOSP ROM + Kernel.
Examples:
A) SpeedMod K3-9 + (Samsung) LRG ROM = Samsung Experience
B) NOTECORE + m3dd0g's LiquidSmooth v3.0 = Custom Experience
C) ANiKernel + AOKP build 41 (milestone 6) = Deep Custom Experience
I'd say it depends on how you use your device,
If your not addicted to flashing & you want a stable smooth phone with minimum issues, use SpeedMod
However, if you like to tinker & don't mind a few bugs go with notecore.
At the moment notecore is hit & miss, a new version (sometimes 2) everyday tells you its not there YET.
I started with v1 through to v5, whilst at its best notecore is the fastest kernel for our note, for me there was always the occasional freeze that didn't happen with SpeedMod or funky, or even with earlier versions of the same kernel.
PS. This is not a criticism of the dev, I donated to him for his work on the kernel & a few years ago for his superb windows mobile (cleanex) roms
I feel the need to mention this to avoid any potential flame wars igniting as some folks get a little 'Apple' when you speak objectively.
Chances are notecore will get there, but for me right now, SpeedMod whilst lacking the outright speed of NC, its just as smooth but more reliable.

NoteCore is all speed. SpeedMod is stable, smooth and reliable.
I had corrupt sd-card on NoteCore, don't remember which version but I never tried it again. Things have gotten better and I might give V7 a try.
As for people getting apples - welcome to Internet there are E-Rambo-Hulks everywhere.:silly:

Haha, E-Rambo-Hulks, not heard that 1 before.
Also had issues with the sd card unmounting & apps uninstalled on reboot.
Just tried v7 so far the freezing has gone, especially with dead trigger.
will give it a few hours/days.
Edit: freezing still happening, back to speedmod.
ive never had an issue with either kernel but for me notecore out performs speedmod hands down.
There are 2 versions of notecore, Standard and extreme, Extreme does not work for everyone (strange but true) But it works for me
No issues, No FC's, No lags, No battery drain.
I play dead trigger A LOT and i have the tegra 3 graphics enabled and it is buttery smooth. Awesome game if i must say so.
But the only way to know which one is right for you is to try them both and heavily test them
What works for one person doesnt mean it will work for another.

Completely agree with you. Anyone that feels speedmod is just as smooth but more stable must not use their phones for gaming or other CPU intensive apps because the difference is HUGE if you are comparing the OCed version with the regular speedmod.
Of course, it all depends on what the person needs it for and nothing beats testing for yourself since it takes little time to flash back and forth.

i said it was just as smooth & more reliable, i gave my opinion based on my experience,
please accept my apologies if english isnt your 1st language so you dont understand what you're typing, but for you to assume how another person uses their phone based on your experience, makes no sense.
notecore is fast, no question, but for me, with fifa12, dead trigger, nova3, gt racing... all play just as smooth with both kernels, where i notice the speed difference is on things like launcher transitions or opening solid explorer NC is a fraction quicker, not Huge, we're talking milliseconds quicker.

In my personal experience I find both of them good in their own ways. Note core is a full performance kernel while speedmod Is a balanced kernel. I keep coming back to Note core because of it's brilliant performance, thanks to Gavin .

Look mate... I understood what you said perfectly so no idea what your language comment was about.... And I would like to see a video of Nova 3 on both kernels on your phone because I test every rom and kernel pretty much and I know that the performance is not the same... I hope English is your first language so you can understand that 'talk is cheap' ....

Theoretically you are right.
In practice, you may not be.
SpeedMod = stability oriented.
NOTECORE= speed oriented.
AOSP kernel = speed and feature oriented.
Nova 3 could run fullspeed on Stock Samsung, SpeedMod, Notecore and AOSP. Or Nova 3 running fullspeed only on AOSP. Or only on Notecore and AOSP.
Obviously, it depends on how good the device (they're not created equal) and rom is, as well as the user (different apps installed, different forms of usage).
The only way to decide is to test them personally and see what works for you.
I'm using and testing also both, and all versions...... If you compare it with cars, or car builder, then Hardcore is more the "settled" one, like Mercedes, that is a kernel, that is solid, stable and do what it should do..... Speedmod is good, if you want to have a kernel with good performance, but you don't want to Overclock or something...... And I think, here speedmod is very good....... For Users, they don't want to screw on setups, just having a kernel, that is installed and good!
Gavin is more like a tuning builder, like amg that takes the Mercedes and try to get out more performance on every little part of the engine....... But also get stable enough to win the 24hours race in LeMans
My favourite is Notecore, cause I'm also a screwing fan...... To get as much performance as can out of my note, and here is Notecore definitely on Pole Position....... Since V4 performance is so good, that I get the first time really satisfied......... All runs very fast, apps open like rockets..... Game performance is awesome (gaming Dead Trigger with full effects and tegra effects also triggered on, runs smooth as butter), and also on heavy apps like Photoshop touch, there is enough power to render effects on high resolution pics from Cameras like the CV-5 with 4096x2048 px in png nearly uncompressed......
But Notecore is a performance Kernel, if you are a bit sensible, and you get a heart attack, if your phone gets a little bit warm.... Than better use a kernel that is a bit more conservative.....

Really not fussed enough to flash both kernels make a video just to prove a point (I'm yawning at the thought), I have no reason to lie about the smoothness, simply want what most people want, great performance with stability, still it's just a phone, I don't fret about getting 5 more fps.
If you're getting that with NC then I'm happy for you. I'm not, but I'll say again, it's only a matter of time before the dev gets it spot on. Until then speedmod works great for me.

From classic rom. Has tried note std v7 for 3 days. Very smooth and battery drain performance was superb as well. But having same issue with other user. UI sometimes will hang for few second without any respond. But still able to pull down notification bar.
Tried speedmod k3-9 yesterday till now, stable, battery performance not bad at all, smooth and no single hang.
Battery performance is very subjective things, u must try it and compare by your self.

I am using the latest official CM10.1 Nightly build and play around it for 3 days. It is really great. Compare it with Stock LG 20B JB. I found

1, The speed and response of UI, open up apps, web browsing and etc. improved a lot!!!
2, Less heat is generated
3, A lot better battery life.
4, A lot more control on everything.
5, Officially support FB home and it runs perfectly (You can even download it from the Play store)
6, seems it has better multi-tasking, at least it won't kill too many of the background apps (I have VLC direct running on background, I will always get killed on stock LG rom, but on CM10.1, it will still running while I am doing something else)
7, Better and more pretty UI.
The cons-
1, MHL output is not working correctly. (and it seems it will never work)
2, No custom ringer and notification sound.
3, All volume seems less loud than the stock
4, Media won't scan again while you unplug and plug the SD card back on.
5, Camera has less control and lower performance (HDR run slower that it really wait and take 3 slow shot to compose, no way to shut down the shutter sound, no ISO control and only +/-1 exposure control)
6, Too many option and control on setting, you might not have an idea what it really do....(maybe it is a pros for some ppls, haha)
It is just my opinion during these 3 days. Maybe some of them is just a bug or I just too new to this. Hope you guys don't mind. Even there is a lot of Cons, I think this ROM is very nice. Thanks. =)

Well I'm currently in the process of reverting to v10a. Call me crazy but if you're a gamer it's the fastest rom with 99% of games working great. Since then LG became obsessed with overheating and slowly degraded its performance. Now that I'm unlocked I'm going to see if it's possible to use proper clockworkmod on this rom, if it works maybe someone can port some custom kernel features. JB and cm10.1 are still great though and I plan to continue experimenting with them as more stuff is developed

I have also switched a lot in this last month or so but just in between Stock, CM10,1 and Werewolf Rom.
1. For me stock has the best battery results almost used phone for 40 hours or so still with some battery left and had absolute no problems at all with the baseband issue ( I hope xtribas and others who do have it get over it as soon as possible with the help of good development).
2. CM10.1 is great work and a build of devotion from its developers almost everyday comes a new nightly with some features and tweaks. Runs very smooth and till now have had not many bugs I would say some problem with baseband wakelocks here but not in Stock which I cannot explain why.
3. Werewolf's Rom one of my fellow Countrymen is Fantastic I really appreciate his work, time and efforts. It's an awsome Rom fast, stable almost reliable like stock. It will be best Rom after Stock I guess.
I am not a Gamer so sorry to all Gamers I don't know how is the Gaming Life on this Phone (with all due respect to @non4 and others, I hope you guys get best out of this phone with the help of our Clever Developing Team.) In between I do play games but on my Laptop ( Acer Aspire V3-771G, intel i7-3610QM 2,3 GHz, 16GB RAM, 1,2 TB HDD, NVIDIA Geforce GT 650M )

I'm using CM and change kernel from time to time between the werewolf and iodak.
Update: flashing clockworkmod on ICS gives the notorious security error, for it to work the ROM would have to be repacked to a flashable format like zaiben. And the eternity project kernel just got updated, based on feedback I may have to go back to JB already

Wifi still doesn't works on Ethernity Kernel for CM..?
i use rom stock v20c with ph85 kernel, really stable and really good performance

After next time you revert to v10a (you seem to switch back and forth a lot ), would you mind packing up and uploading the files in /system/lib? I need them, but really would like to avoid having to flash back to v10a/h at the moment. It seems that LG's ICS builds are currently the only builds with properly working MHL and it is likely it has to do with the included tegra libraries.
I am even more interested in these files for v10h (although the relevant files may be the same), if anyone has easy access to them.

Hi there @non4 can you please explain some main differences between some of the Roms and Kernels you have tried so far, which is good and in which way like battery life, usage, and which is not so good and needs to be looked at? I ask you because I think you have switched around a lot (sorry if I am wrong) and have tested directly from some of the Great Develeopers around.

v20a stock: Better than v10h, but not as fast as v10a
v20a with iodak kernel: Good battery, close to v10a performance
v20a with kholks kernel: Fastest experience but currently too buggy
CM10.1: Faster in some games, but slower in others, battery OK and some nice features
CM10.1 with werewolf kernel: Solves some of the lags at cost of battery
PACMAN: Not a gamers ROM but fun to play around wit
ZAIBEN: Just like stock without the bloat

Have you tried the latest CM10.1 nightly? I just flashed it last night and I had no issues with Deep Sleep, Runs very Smooth and Battery Life is Good. Last night I unpluged it at round about 10:30 PM and today Morning at 9 I just lost 2% of battery so I think its not bad 0.2% overnight.
I guess I will try this:

and I am gonna try
Iodaks Kernel with CM10.1
and lets see what comes out. I have a long weekend to play with because Monday is Holiday here in Germany

When I see some optimization to the I/O speed which will hopefully fix the remaining stutters then I will try, I CBA with moving my stuff to the right folders and restoring all my apps . Try its a good combo! Nice core usage and performs like kholks old 3.1.10 alpha

I have flashed the iodak's kernel with latest CM 10.1 Nightly and I must say it's a great Combination from Developers and Battery life is nice as well. Have a look.

I think best kernel for now is the stock kernel because the custom aren't ready 100%

I have used nightly and iodak's combination for couple of weeks and I am very happy with the using experience. Battery life is much better than stock and gaming is no laggish. Currently I am using Arararagi's unoffical version so I can still use LG's quicknote and Memo which are only things I want to use from the stock. thanks for Arararagi, make me love CM more. Werewolf kernel also great but I found iodak's better for me. Any way you won't regret to move to CM.
Official jb rom and ioak kernel at the moment. I like lg keyboard and the battery drain is less than cm.

Hi all guys, I want to ask everyone to help me understanding why I my device is a bit laggy. Ok, I don't have a nexus, but I have an amazing quad core processor, a tegra 3 chipset!!
And even if flash custom ROMs I have this lag feeling, and not only feeling sometimes. I will be more accurate.
1) When I install apps or uninstall apps, I have some lags, now OK the phone is doing a big task but it is a bit too laggy.
2) Switching between apps can be laggy some times, and not just with big apps.
3) I have noticed that even having not much apps working background, the phone give me this impression of lagness, I have 1gb ram and a quad core, I get angry if it start to run slowly only for some apps working background, I mean the hardware is powerfully enough.
After all I must say that I have tryed these ROMs.
Carbon, slimbean, liquid smooth, and CyanogenMod (that is a bit better on performance).
My favourite is slimbean because I feel it stable.
And I have tryed most of the kernels, like werewolf, optimous prime, and iodak at last, and I like this last one.
Can someone help me understand this? Thank you guys!

I always felt that too, until I flashed kit kat and mokee kernel. You can try it out

I have no idea, I don't play any games on phone ^^
I have tried kitkat and it is nice, but it's not much stable so I have chosen to return to stock (zaiben rom) with iodak kernel and I'm impressed, it is fast and smooth with this kernel.
Anyway I think that all Roms that we have are unstable in their way, so I prefer stock where all works.

If you're on a stock based ROM, I suggest you still check for that MLT apk
