S-OFF/ROM update advice needed - HTC Incredible S

I am trying to work out whether to OTA update to ICS or go S-OFF, unlock and load a custom ROM.
I'm currently running locked BL, S-ON, Stock 2.3.5 (Sense 3.0) ROM.
I have read up on downgrading HBOOT to get S-OFF via revolutionary but I got HBOOT 2.01.0001 and haven't been able to find any thread saying whether tacoexploit works. I know if I OTA upgrade to ICS, and HBOOT 2.02.0000, I will only be able to unlock BL via HTCDEV and will not able to get full S-OFF until someone comes up with a method.
I have unlocked and flashed custom recovery/ROMs/Radios etc. on ZTE Blade, ZTE Skate, Motorola Atrix and HTC Desire (damn, I love 4Ext) without any problems but still consider myself a noob because, well you know, if you don't build your own ROMs...
I still have about a year or so on the warranty and custom ROMs always seem to have some kind of problem. So I just can't make my mind up as to what would be the right move.
Please, any info, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

you can always try run this downgrader here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705913 i would s off now because there might not be another exploit found for a very long time. you can always install a stock rooted rom through recovery. theres a thread on the development thread. thats if you still want stock rom.

The script and tacoroot exploit still work with HBOOT 2.01.0001, so you should be good to go.

Yeah, that is my fear, it may be a long time before an exploit is found for the latest HBOOT. I also figure that there will never be an official JB ROM update from HTC for the beloved Inc S. While I have maintain my warranty for as long as I have, it does feel like the right time to fully unlock. My Inc S has never given me any trouble at all, so I'm not worried about losing the warranty. I just love the phone and want to keep it working well for as long a possible. ROM-wise, I think ARHD looks stock enough to be super stable and tweaked enough to be nice and slick.

[Q] Will it be safe to update to ICS with root after it comes out?

1. Hi guys i looked at tpblake's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435136 but was wondering if the same answers would apply when ICS came out?
2.Also in this question in tpblake's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435136
"Q: My IncS was shipped with HBOOT 2.00.0000 but Revolutionary does not support this version. How can I downgrade the HBOOT in order to run Revolutionary and get S-OFF?
A: Community member nonverbose has written a tool and guide for getting S-OFF with HBOOT 1.16.0000 and this tool and guide has been confirmed to also work with HBOOT 2.00.0000 when the bootloader is in an UNLOCKED state."
In his answer it said ''when the bootloader is in an UNLOCKED state" does that mean you should unlock your bootloader through htcdev.com before running noverbose's tool?
3. How do i set my signature? I looked around someone stated 5 - 8 posts but i have done that but still cant set my signature! not that im spamming or anything
Sorry for being a complete noob but yeh '-'
If your question is 'can I run a ruu or ota with root/s off/ unlocked bootloader', then your answer is no.
However Nik said that once the official ics comes out, he will provide us with a rooted stock rom
If your question is 'should I root it now with revolutionary or wait till ics and root then', I would downgrade and s off now, as s off is better than HTCdev unlock, and we dont know if there will be s off or a downgrade method from the ics update
You don't have to HTCdev unlock with nonverbose's tool
I think you need 10 posts, and its under user cp at the top of the page with you are logged in.

OTA won't work if you have unocked (s-off) your hBoot. But if you are S-off, you can always flash an ICS ROM by Nikhil, or ARHD, and I'm sure both will release a tweaked, rooted version of the stock ICS that will be pushed as OTAupgrade . OTA is for all lesser mortals who are stuck with locked phones.

I'd say its best just to use ROMs that get developed as they will also be updated to be the latest android etc.
Also if you read the forums you will see a lot of people have bricked there phones from unrooting and then updating. Roms like ARHD etc will always get updated.
So do not worry just wait for ROMS to be designed

[Q] HTC Incredible S reverting back to stock

Hello Guys,
I got my New Incredible S two days ago but I am unaware of the rooting/unlocking process.
Here are my questions:
1. I am now on Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 ROM. Is there anyway that I can root my device without having to unlock it.
2. If I do root the device then will I be able to unroot it and revert back to stock (Any risks)
3. If I choose to unlock the device, can I revert back and re-lock it.
4. What is the difference between S-ON and S-OFF (I dont understand the terms in the first place)
5. Difference between the rooting and unlocking process.
Please guys, i will be greatfull if any of you can help me out with my queries. I am new to HTC. I was previously using a Galaxy S and it was too simple for me to install custom roms. Came to HTC only for the Sense UI.
Thank you.

Welcome to HTC. I suggest you search and read the sticky posts in the forum. It will provide you with knowledge and answer your questions. On the HTC S-OFF provides you with a true unlocked system which makes it very easy to mod.
The official HTC unlock method does not really provide you with a flly unlocked system, so there are some mods that aren't as easy or impossible to perform.

Yes the Revolutionary S-OFF can be undone and reverted back to S-ON. Yes if you S-OFF and keep your stock ROM, then you should get the ICS OTA notification, but you will have to revert back to stock in order to apply it.

No the OTA update will fail because the S-OFF process write protects the bootloader and prevents anything from overwritng it to preserve S-OFF. The OTA will have a new version of the bootloader and since it will not be able to replace and update the S-OFF bootloader, you will end up with a phone that will not boot.

[Q] Info before I root and install custom rom

All,
I decided that I do not want to wait for HTC to roll out the 4.2.2 update on my HTC One Dev and install a custom rom. I really tried to stick with stock because I was sick and tired of constant flashing and just want something that is stable and for work. But my itch is coming back and would just like to get a stable stock like rom ie Android Revolution HD 12. (Opinions for stable and stocklike?)
Anyways, since I have the Dev Edition, just want to make sure I'm doing this right, and have a couple of questions:
Since I'm bootloader unlocked, all I need to do is root, install a custom recovery ie CWM or TWRP, and flash a rom?
What do I do with firmware and radios? I know I should flash these seperately, but can anyone give me advise on which to flash? Again, I have the Dev Edition on At&T network.
Thank you all for any advice you can give me.

There's no real reason to flash either firmware or radio. but Install a recovery, which will root the phone for you, make a nandroid backup and flash to your heart's content.

@vomer posted a detailed guide to achieve Firmware upgrade, S-OFF and other stuff. If you want to go with stock experience, then go with ARHD 12.1.
You need S-OFF to upgrade the firmware (which is recommended). If you have 1.54 HBOOT, you will not gonna be able to flash a custom firmware and you will have to use the full firmware package which I'm not sure if Vomer included in his guide, but you can always look for Mike's firmware compilation topic

This is a little off.
If you have 1.54 hboot, you are already on the most recent firmware. But because of that, you can't s-off and flash future firmware updates. You're limited to flashing custom roms at the moment.
How can I tell what version of hboot I'm on?

You're on 1.44 because your phone is still stock on 4.1.2. So you're okay.

To know this, all you need to do is go to the bootloader. As your bootloader is already unlocked, I will assume you know how to get here...
Anyway, you can just reboot the device while keeping the Vol Down key pressed and you will enter bootloader.

Pre-Updated HTC One Question

So, I received my replacement HTC One from HTC today and it's pre-updated to 4.4.2 Android and Sense 6.0. From what I've read, that is a problem when it comes to wanting S-Off in the future.
My question is, what do I do from here to get back to being Unlocked, Rooted, SuperCID, S-Off, etc. I want my phone fully up to date to the best of it's capabilities with all of this. (I never updated firmwares, radios, etc when I had my phone before and I'm not sure if that held me back any).
It's been over a year now since I've done any of this stuff and all of my confidence is gone due to the absence. Where do I start nowadays? Any particular order so I don't have to re-lock my bootloader to S-Off or to install a firmware update or blah blah.
What order of things do I do and what do I do from here? Fully stock at the moment with Hboot 1.57
Note:
I'm not a huge fan of Sense roms, so my goal is to probably use ARHD 6.1 (GPE) for my stable rom and use CM11 for my unstable AOSP rom. I want to be able to freely switch between the two without issues if possible, like I was able to before.

You can try firewater s-off before you unlock bootloader, if that doesn't work you can go the conventional route by HTCDev unlock first, then custom recovery and root then firewater s-off. If you can not get s-off with firewater, then you might be able to get it with Sunshine. Which ever way you go before flashing a custom ROM, do a nandroid backup and save it to your PC.

So I use Firewater and that makes me S-Off even though my bootloader isn't unlocked and I don't have root? I know it says it uses a "temp" root option but if I use this, will I not have a rom anymore or does it just do it in the background until I unlock the bootloader and stuff?

The second method will using a temporary root get you S-OFF with an UNLOCKED bootloader. You will still have to flash a custom rom and gain root. It should not effect your rom, in fact it works best on stock roms. As it says in the OP it doesn't work on all phones. You may have to use the first method. It is an option, it is your choice.

Okay, so I should be able to follow all of those steps in the second option with TempRoot and my phone will still function and behave like it does right now? Reason I ask is I need my phone for work and I plan to sleep in 2 hours. I have enough time to do the bootloader unlocking + S-off, but not the rooting/custom rom right now.
If I can do this in bits and pieces, it'll be very helpful. I just need to make sure my rom will be working after

Yeah, I suppose. I just feel so...messy with this stock ROM. I'm so used to using a ROM completely based off of what I want installed on it that doesn't use Sense at all. Oh well.
I'll get Nova launcher on there and clean it up a little bit.

[Q] S-off with rooted HTC One M7 - HBOOT 1.57 S-on

Hello!
I've decided I want to turn my HTC One (International version) into a Google Play edition. I've watched a bunch of videos, and went for it. Everything went fine until the step where I should get S-off. I've tried quite a few tools, but just get an error that my version is not going to get S-off.
I have seen people been able to work around using CM11, but from what I've understood, you need S-off to write anything to /boot, which is where I presume CM11 would be flashed. So, am I missing anything important? Is there a workaround if my phone has HBOOT 1.57, and not S-off already? I hope someone can help me!
TL;DR: My phone is unlocked and rooted, but I can't get S-off using any of the most popular tools. My HBOOT is version 1.57.
I hope someone smarter than me is able to help me! If you need more information, please leave a reply and I'll get all the information I'm able to.
In advance, thanks!
Kcdyb
No, you can flash cm11 with s-on. You have to have a custom recovery with which to do it, though. I don't know which tutorial you're using, but it should have a section where you flash the recovery after the bootloader is unlocked. If your bootloader is still locked, then... Are you rooted?
I'm pretty new to HTC, I just came off of samsung, and they seem straightforward and simple by comparison, but with s-off, it seems like there's more room for customization with HTC phones...
Anyway, I found that TWRP won't flash cm11, but Philz_touch will. If you're rooted, grab rashr off the play store and you can flash both of these recoveries right from your phone. I'd go with TWRP 2.6.3.0, though, since the latest didn't like my backups.
Then once those are installed, you boot into bootloader and volume down to Recovery and it'll pop up in a few seconds where you can take backups (<--DO THIS!) and flash new roms and kernels and such.

Have you tried Sunshine S-OFF, it will cost $25 but it is worth it. Once you get S-OFF you can change your CID & MID then flash the GPe RUU or ROM.
Thanks a lot for your replies!
I have actively tried figuring this out alongside reading for my exam today, and recently found and interesting option to work around S-on. My total goal is getting GPE Lollipop on my HTC, and I just now found a thread discussing using a backup from OPs phone. According to many users in the thread, they have been able to recover this backup and successfully run Lollipop with S-on. I did consider buying Sunshine, but due to finding the backup-option, I wanna try the free alternatives first. My goal is like I said running GPE, and I will most likely not install other roms on my phone.
My phone has an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery CWM v6.0.4.8, and my phone is rooted with SuperSU v2.37 at the moment. This might change some since I'm trying to recover a specific backup as my current tactic.
Your replies have definitely added to my understanding of the workarounds, and are much appreciated. If the backup-method don't work, I will try your methods!
PS: I posted in the backup-thread asking some questions. I'm posting my link here to string them both together in case someone else looks for an solution to the same problem I had.
