Hello, i have some questions about the inbuilt apps in a rom.
1. There are always tons of useless apps in the roms, are there roms without apps? i mean why the hell is someone preinstalling facebook, twitter, google+ apps for me??? If i need them i can install them... :/
2. Can i remove the normal "browser" or will the phone get buggy then, couse who needs 2 browsers?
3. Why are so much Rom builders are using this ES filebrowser? I never saw a bad app like that.. it can't even tell me how much free space my sd card has..

1. you can just uninstall them by rooting your phone and use titanium backup to remove those useless application, there are no rom without any application installed if there is the phone will not work on how it supposedly work
2. yes you can use titanium backup but do nandroid backup just to be sure that you can back to phone normal state if there is a problem exist
3. for this i really don't know just wait and there's someone surely answer your questions more intelligently
Ah okay.. yeah well sure an android phone need apps to work, but its just that i had to remove them all again
about the browser... i also can freeze them - if i freeze an app it won't use any ram memory right? so i could just freeze the browser.. Apps that are not system relevant i really delete.. speak memo, twitter, google+, googlemail and so
I made a backup of my CM7 with titanbackup - how can i get some data out of the backup? like phone numbers that aren't synched with google - or whatsapp messages? The first time i did recover the whole CM7 was recovered
And is there a way to "cook" the rom myself? i hope its the same word like it was for nokia roms there you had a rom browser and could delete apps or add apps you wanted to install with the rom and that was called cooking.. So if i get a rom i would check what apps are in and could remove the .apk

Yes you can free ram if your browser keep running but you can force stop the browser in "manage application"
In backup i think you can extract it? Not so sure so we should wait for answer for this
I think the right word is compiling in android terms? Yes you can compile your own rom there's a some tutorial in development section

Ah okay.. i found the folder "apps" in the .zip with "system" apps - maybe the system apps that are not removeable without root and the normal.. can i just remove them and add others?

Added to the list. More welcome.
What is cyon.apk?
And why is it "safe" to fremover the og launcher? At least you should put your launcher of choice in system/app first....

What if you just remove the above apps without backup of them.
Do you brick the phone if hard reset is done ?

Okay so when we remove the apk program files we don°t actually remove the programs from the Rom ??

Nothing will happen, you just will miss apps.
When you hard reset your phone it wiil just delete user data and cache partition.
Any changes to system folder means you make changes to rom and cannot be undone without reflashing or restore backup.
Be careful with deleting of apps! If something goes wrong and the phone is not booting we don't have any global rom and flashing tool for now.

Just freez them with Titanium backup if you want the free mem.... space wise deleting them is not really nessecary.... or pull them out with adb first.
Some Insight
Let's work top down guys, no panic, no alarm.
There are "system apps" and there are "system apps"
Most people refer to any app that's installed on the system partition as a "system app" but the real definition of a "system app" is one that is signed with a root or platform key. This key allows the app to interact with the OS at the lowest level, manipulating resources and other apps.
It's safe to remove either
You can remove either types of these apps but some may be dependencies for other apps and removing these can cause Force Closes.
A Factory Reset does not touch the system partition
As stated above, any modifications you make to the system partition (/system/*) will withstand a Factory Reset. This is why root still works after a Factory Reset.
Safe-to-remove apps
I personally provided the list above and can confirm that these apps are safe to remove but you need to be aware:
Some apps are required (like a Launcher), if you remove it, make sure you have an alternative installed.
Some apps are not available on the Market, you may not be able to substitute them.
Make a backup before you delete any apps!
Note: For critical apps, like a Launcher you *must* have one on your system partition! Do *not* remove your only Launcher from the system partition!
Additional Apps
A lot more can be safely removed from the system partition but they do not consume real-time resources and therefore there is no substantial benefit in removing them. I will post a full schedule of these apps later if somebody doesn't beat me to it.
Enjoy.
More safe to remove: All widgets (loads of them), livewallpaper, protips, maps, lg memo
instead of making backup of the APK files with ADB... can't i just use root explorer to copy the APK files to a folder on my internal sd or computer ??

Yes, you can. But I would recommend backing up to pc for redundancy.

Errug bedankt ! Nice overview.
Since space isn't an issue just freezing them with Titanium Backup should free up the memory as well right?
I'll be waiting for a conclusive list of "freezable" apps. ( And patiently await a custom booloader so we can get some really good custom roms.)
@Xmoo
Haven't see inside the ROM but I assume googlefeedback.apk is in there.
Wouldn't hurt killing that to.
I wish I've red this thread before tinkering around witgh my phone. Seem to have kinda bricked it after owning it for 3 days.
I was playing around with it trying to get rid of the facebook, twitter & myspace for LG apps but I couldn't figure out what they were called in the Titanium Backup Pro list så i backed up LG Home (or was it just called LG) and naively thought the worst thing that could happen was that I would have to do a hard factory reset if anyting went wrong.
But as the android n00b that I am (first android phone) I should have known that LG Home is the launcher! So know I have a phone I can check emails on but if I go past the startup guide it crasches and im stuck at the startup LG logo until I do another hard factoryreset.
Anyone know if the default image/ROM is soon to be released or should I take a shot and send my phone in for repair hoping that they never pick up on what I did?
Sorry of this is offtopic.
There are a couple of threads with similar problems, so search a bit and you should find a way to fix it

Have someone send you the lg home apk via email and install, or perhaps another launcher if you want. You'll get the "Install ?" question when you open the mail.. do so and you have a launcher again.

Check this thread out:

When I check out my Active Services I can see the following programs: Whatsapp services (2), Twitter (1), Sim-toolkit (1), Google Services Framework (2), Media (without anything beneath it), Music (2), com.lge.omadmclient (1), Bluetooth Share (2) weird cause bluetooth is OFF! , Wheather & clock update (1), On-Screen phone (1), DRM Service (1), Maps (1), LG PC Suite ObexManager (1), and the Gingerbread Keyboard (1).
Big list in comparison to my G1 and I guess there can be SOME things deleted. Altough I don't know which ones. A guess:
1. Media (what does this do?)
2. Music (I disabled the music bar, and don't want that service running all the time!)
3. com.lge.omadmclient (what's this?)
4. Bluetooth Share... weird thing because I have my bluetooth OFF all the time... how to get rid of these?
5. Wheather & clock updater. I don't use that widget so...?
6. On-Screen phone, what does it do?
7. DRM Service
8. LG PC Suite ObexManager?
Can somebody please tell me if I can get rid of (some) of these services, and if so, which programs to freeze Thanks!
Good day everyone, I have a small question which might sound odd to some of you, please note that I am aware of nandroid and titanium backup etc... as i have purchased titanium backup and find it extremely useful i know exactly what it does.
My question is pretty simple, is there an app that one can download and use, which makes a list of all apps installed and can backup that list either online or on the phone or in whatever way possible, and if one has to restore a phone or install a new rom etc.. can restore that list and the app would RE-DOWNLOAD all apps from market. I DON'T WANT TO RESTORE the apps from a backup, i just want an automated system to re-download and install the apps from the market directly. I know this might not make any sense to some/most of you, but the reason is quite simple, I've used titanium backup to make backups of my apps, but once restored some apps FC, and i can't be bothered to go through all apps one by one to check which are good and which need to be re-installed after every recovery I do. I know appbrain can show you what apps are installed, but i couldn't figure out a way to create a shopping list which i can use to re-install all the apps from the market after i do a rom isntall.
Thank you.
Rodi
erm..... as for apps i think there is only Titanium what can do batch restore.
re-downloading all your apps would really take a long time.
CM7 (ROM) does this, but do you really wanna swap ROMs for this reason, i doubt it.
can i just ask, when you use Titanium, are you restoring system data too ?? because this is the reason what causes FC's , i have suffered this before.
when using Titanium, its best to restore app + app data ONLY, system data is data kept from the previous ROM, therefor it causes issues (FC's) with the new ROM.
Yes, appbrain and the fast web installer does that.

For the time it takes, i don't mind, i'll set it on wifi and let it do it's thing, as for the question about app data and system data, well I don't backup system data, and when i restore i only restore apps only not even apps data, then on a 4-5 apps i restore app data.
markdj57: thx for the answer, can you give me a quick rundown on how to do it through appbrain? as i couldn't find a way to make it download the list of apps
Thank you fellas,
Rodi
AppBrain i download and frequently save the apps list .
Click on app and check install likewise on phone open AppBrain and install/Update .
Its not an automated process.
jje
Go to appbrain website and login using your google account.
Install appbrain and fast web installer from android market.
Sync with appbrain website using app.
On new firmware, do a sync. Appbrain detects new firmware so go to website and you will see 2 lists of apps. Copy all apps to new list and delete old list (optional) be careful you don't delete wrong list.
Enable fast web installer app.
Sync appbrain app. Hit the install button and all your apps will install. Sometimes takes a few times if all apps aren't available in market.
For a few days, some of my paid apps were not visible in the market but it sorted itself out eventually.
Hope this helps
Mark

Im currently using froyo by laszlo... and it has its own default system apps...
i want to replace it with some off my own prefer things...
to be direct...
i want to replace the launcher contacts dialer and messaging apps...
i want it to have go launcher, go contacts, go dialer, go messaging
would it be just like unzipping then remove the apps i dont want, put in the apps that i want sign the apks, then zip and sign?
1. im pretty sure you can just put the apk's in system/app folder... but since they're apps from market they might need to go into data/app folder.. not sure
2. you dont need to sign the apk's if your signing the rom.zip...
I would suggest just installing the apps you want and pretending the others aren't there.
Removing important system apps can break stuff pretty badly. There is a page on the cyanogenmod wiki about what can and can't be removed. Read that then remove what you want. Also since the apps you want are market apps I would recommend installing them from there so you don't have to redo everything every time one of them updates
this is true^^^
So I am wondering roms and apks.
So I'll just ask you few questions...
1.Do you keep emergency flashable Rom on your sd card?
2.if yes...what Rom?
3.what application instaler you keep on sd card? So you don't have to download them from net/playstore.
Hope you understand my questions.
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda app-developers app
I always keep the Stock Rom Backup in my SD card. im currently using(testing) JellyBam but have N00by's pure repack of V30B on the sd.
I guess everyone has some apks in their sd to avoid downloading them every time they flash a ROM.
I have Whatsapp, Swype keyboard, Dropbox (where i have more apks), ES File Explorer, Rom Manager, BetterBatteryStats, ChrometoPhone (since i cant download it from the Store cause im from Argentina)... and some other like games..or emulators.
i always have a backed up zeus which i keep(its already configured)
apps...i keep titanium backup and its backed up apps such as sms back up and restore, gmote, flashlight app, xda, skype, facebook
You can even make a flashable zip with the apps you like to push in system. I use my own gapps (stuff removed and maps, streetview, books), a zip with zeam, gingerbreadkeyboard and dictionary and one with titanium, root explorer, betterbatterystats, etc...
I didn't found awswer to this anywere so here it goes.
A couple of weeks ago i was playing cut the rope, then the phone frezze reboted itself and half of my apps had disapeared (market, gmapps, gmail, file expert, youtube, zdbox, launcher pro, etc) but others like google sky, titanium backup, some games, mixzing stayed there.
1st of all i can't understand the logic behind this but thats not why i am here but if someone explains it i would be greatful.
Then i restored some with titanium backup and the market app i had to install the apk with appinstaller because i couldn't with titanium.
Now my problem is when i try to install file expert and other that i didn't had a backup, because when i try to install them throught market i get an error saying that its not possible to install the app in the predefined directory or something like that. The error message is in Portuguese so i'm translating the best i can.
I'm also afraid that these apps are occupying space even though they don't appear anywhere on the phone.
So can anyone please explain what is going on and how i fix this?
My phone is rooted, obviously and i don't remember the name of the rom since its a vanilla rom very similar to the original one.
Thx in advance
