New Bionic Coming... - Motorola Droid Bionic

So I've got my 4th Bionic en route due to pesky data connection issues and no GPS. I'm wondering if I should flash the .232 ICS build. A couple questions arise if I may:
- Is it easily rootable? Running .905 stock root presently...
- Does taking a leaked version make OTA'ing to the official build more difficult? I can just root the new one with .905 and wait if it's simpler.
Answers to the above would make my night! I love these forums as they minimize the knowledge gap between people like me and experts

232 is extremely easy to install. Rooting it is just as easy. Here is a simple and complete method. I am on an iPod so you gotta find the downloads on your own.
Ensure you are on 905
Download 232 and put it on your sdcard. Just on the first level (root) folder
Turn your bionic off
Press power and both volume buttons at the same time
Hold them until it powers on and just wait a moment
Sometimes I can speed up getting to the recovery by pressing both volume buttons again
Once you see blue letters in recovery. stock recovery. Select install zip. Choose Zip
Then let it install. Once it is done restart I it doesn't automatically. Can't remember.
Rooting. Use razers edge
For that, turn your phone on in ics
Enable debugging mode on your phone
Unzip the razersedge zip into a folder on your desktop
Then plug your phone into a USB port
Let your phone connect (I am assuming you have the Motorola drivers installed. If not. Do that
Open the folder on your desktop and run the program called run
Hit a button on your computer when told to and wait for it to say done
There you go
Just that easy.
Probably takes less than 20 minutes

So does installing a leaked version make it any more difficult to install the official version at its release? I'm thinking it would be a good opportunity to work bugs out of installed apps and familiarize myself with the new version.
Thanks again for the previous reply. And should I not root the .905 before flashing the ICS? Does that matter? I'm thinking it'd be lost anyways on the flash up. And root of the external SD I'm assuming?

I honestly have never tried to load a leak while rooted in 905. I am pretty sure people were looking for the method to root the leak because it didn't carry over. I can't be for sure on that. Either way, rooting is a cake walk.
As for taking an official OTA update, there have been guys on here talking about it, but if you are aiming to be rooted, get titanium back up, once you have made a full back up your can copy that to an external car or to your computer or where ever you go. Then, for sure, the very worst it possibly can be is FXZ to 902,which is a little scary the first time, but works very very well and is pretty easy too. Then ota up all the way and root and restore from time backup. Probably can get away with doing apps and data as the restore.
If you are comfortable and want a bit more of a challenge, you can go through the fxz with no data loss thing. I am too lazy for that and time backup gets my data back just fine for me.

So you are looking into ICS leaks. If you currently running. 905 rooted and completely stock, I mean all apps that came with the stock moto rom and nothing frozen or deleted, and then easy breeze. Download OTA root keeper from app store and backup root with that app. Download the ICS. 232 leak onto your external sd storage., the one that you can take out. Go in and backup everything you need to keep off of the internal storage, you will need to format it using the phone's settings. If you use safe strap make sure you uninstall it using the app. Disable root with the OTA root keeper app then power off and reboot into stock recovery and install leak. After leak has booted and you are done setting up use the OTA root keeper app to regain root and enjoy ICS goodness..
Once the ICS official is out all you would need to do is fxz back to. 905 using this method http://www.droidforums.net/forum/mo...wngrade-902-no-app-data-loss.html#post2173723
Then apply official update.

.901 without root

Anyway to flash this. 901 update with out root? ?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I don't think so. I am rather new here so I could be wrong but from all my reading it seems that .901 was only leaked. Whether officially or unofficially its only been pushed to a limited number of devices and so some kind soul has uploaded a copy of it for us to update are devices with sadly for some only through rooting. I have however read that if you don't do the 43v3r root thing and use the path saver 1 click root might not stick. So rooting and than updating to .901 might undo the root, But I don't know if you would be interested in that or not.
Hope this helps a bit.
Even for those who are rooted, this has to be flashed using stock recovery so I believe this would mean that you do NOT have to be rooted to flash it. I know that you used to have to rename it to "update.zip" in order to flash it via stock recovery, but I think this might have been changed.
Dude, just throw it on your SD CARD and let us know if it worked.
Most people on here want to be rooted if for no other reason to create a quality backup.
If it doesn't work, it won't hurt anything and you've answered your own question FOR EVERYBODY.
Yup...
Yeah, I had stock 893 or whatever it was, the last update pushed by verizon...
I grabbed the 901 update, and either left it the way it was, or changed the name to update.zip and put it on my sdcard. Booted into recovery mode (This is the normal bionic recovery since your not rooted), and ran the update. Installed fine.

1. Hold both volume buttons and power button at start up.
2. When phone boots there will be letters on top of the Motorola splash screen,.. scroll down to android recovery.
3. Select with power button.
4. Once in recovery you will get the andy with the triangle hold both volume buttons and you will enter stock recovery.
5. Scroll down to / install zip from sd/ card.
From there just select your zip file and let the phone work when finished it will need to be rebooted it might take a little longer then normal but that is fine.
That's it your updated.

I am on 901 and I don't have root, can someone point me toward a rooting method that will work. I searched and tried several methods, but didn't find anything that would work with 901. Preferably with a mac option, but if i have to use windows I will.
Thanks

As of now there is no way to root 901. You have to revert back to 893 or 866, then root and upgrade to 901 again. The easiest way that I know of to go back is to use p3droid's one click method that can be found on my droid world. If you are going back from 901 there is an extra step where you have to flash a seperate cdt.bin file. The one click method will also allow you to root.

Im a little confused because of my self proclaimed noob staus with motorola, htc and samsung is where im best suited.
In any case, im running stock 901 rooted, can I just flash this to get back to complete stock or is there something Im missing.
Yes I left as zip as it is a signed zip it installs fine doesnt even wipe whitch I thought I would

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)

It says that. Ignore it. It is .904 mine said the same.
and no. you have to be on stock .902 bloated, odexed, root is okay, but you will lose it. If not on stock .902 you have to FXZ back, then go in to stock recovery (holding both volume buttons and powering up, and pressing down once and up to open it) then one the fancy logo appears press both volume buttons, the apply update. Navigate to it and select it. Then once its done you'll be .904 stock, unrooted. So run the motofail root script. Then enjoy.

I have a question. I don't own a bionic, but my brother in law has one (great phone), I rooted it with motofail, installed safestrap. He is on.902 currently. once I had him ripped, I immediately switched to the safe side. It made a backup before it switched to safe. I put eclipse 2.2 on it. Now. I am waiting for 904 to go official. When I switch back to unsafe, will I be back on stock right away? or do I have to do a restore of that backup once I am back on unsafe side?
Now, once back to stock, rooted 902, can he get an ota? I would think he could. I know in my thunderbolt, if you are stock and rooted, you can get an ota. Sorry for all the questions, just want to be sure what to do. Moto is much different than htc is in this respect. Thanks, Daniel

Once the official release hits probably. First you would revert back to your "unsafe" system through the safestrap boot menu which should still be running stock 902 (or whatever version he has) Once that is loaded you reboot and it will boot your stock system.
Once your up and running in the stock system the phone will update its apps(Since the stock system has not been run since you rooted/rom'd I'm assuming). I recommend being on WiFi if possible unless he has unlimited data. After that completes you will need to Hit the button to the left of the home button (the 4 blocks with one colored in) > Settings > About Phone > System Updates.
It will look for the update and download it OTA if available. It will wipe out your root so you will need to motofail again after that and probably reinstall SafeStrap(I had to)

Stuck waiting, just like ICS
It's pretty pathetic that they can't even get minor updates out the door. It doesn't bode well for us getting ICS before this phone outlives its usefulness. Sorry to be so cynical, but, VZW and updates has just been horrible. (And not just for the Bionic....right, anyone waiting for an official ICS build for a 4G Xoom? All 2 of you that haven't rooted it and gone to a ROM...) Uh, anyway, let's hope they get this update rolled out soon so we can resume the wait for ICS.

I don't want to seem like an A-hole. But before the phone out lives its usefulness? Almost any smart phone on the market will be useful for years. It's only the american greed wanting the newest baddest phones. How many people actually wait the full 2 years before upgrading? I know I don't. Cell phones have came a long ways, and my wifes DROID OG is still being used as a back up phone being 3 years old. So use a different argument. We will get it, just be patient

I guess you completely missed my point. What I don't want to see happen, and is very POSSIBLE, is that we get ICS after Jelly Bean is released. You're going to tell me that would make you happy? If I had waited a couple more months from when I bought the Bionic in the first place, i.e. having the patience you're telling me I need now, I could have simply bought a phone that CAME with ICS rather than having to wait months for it...

It wouldnt make me happy, nor would it upset me. I buy my phones according to the hardware and the specs that I think will fit me the best. The operating system is just an added bonus. Of course I want ICS, and then Jelly Beam, but I'm not going to complain about the speed I receive the update. Some are faster, some are slower. Just the way of life. Id rather wait.an extra 4 months for a build that isn't super glitchy, as to have it as soon as it's released and it not function properly. Just my opion

Depends on how adventurous you're feeling
If the .905 release isn't the final, then you will be off the upgrade path. Getting back onto it isn't impossible, but it certainly is a pita.
At this point, it's been so long since the soak testers posted about their invite, I'd wonder if they will push another version out. Most everyone thought that .904 would be the next stable release, and now .905 seems less likely too.
Wish we had more info on what was going on behind the curtain with moto and vzw, but alas we do not.

I would very much like to upgrade to the ota 905 JUST so I can put the Eclipse V3.0 ROM on my Bionic. I am just not certain of what to do. I think I need to use RSD Lite woth the 902 "rollback". Then update to 905, root again with motofail, then install the ROM??
I have confidence in doing this onc I have all the right pieces. It's not like I havent done this before (HP Touchpa, Motorola Xoom, Toshiba Thrive). I just need to make sure I have all that I need and have the correct install instructions....
I have a rooted bionic with version 902 currently on it. Will upgrading OTA to 905 cause my phone to brick or should i just wait for a rooted version to come out?

I just received the .905 update and it broke my root. All I had to do to get it back was run motofail and I was up and running again.
I only use Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, and Rootdim as my root apps for now though.
I ran the update also. Didn't break root but destroyed 4g connectivity. Back to 902

I'm on 905 as a base and CM9 as a daily driver, runs like a dream so far, no connectivity issues as of yet.

I've been on Nitro33's Bionic-905deodexed-nitro33.zip for 2 days without a glitch. I upgraded from a stock 902 that I rooted. Had to get rid of safeboot and go with ClockWork mod recovery since the locked bootloader didn't like the file signature, but I put safeboot back on after the install, did my backup, and I've been runinig without a glitch since. I didn't even wipe data.

How did it ruin your 4g?

I tried to update to 905 from 902 and it keeps failing. Could that be happening because I had soft bricked my phone a while ago but was able to save it by finding the stock online?
I safe strapped back to my unsafe side. Waited a day to see if the update dropped. Nothing. So i downloaded it off phandroid's article about it. Flashed it after removing safe strap. No issues. Kept root. Flashed safe strap again. 4G radio is great now. I'm using Droid Theory's Axiom ROM and data connects immediately now. Used to take a minute or two after a boot. Loving this.

What does it say when it fails? If you can get it OTA, extract it out of your /Cache/ folder and Place the file on your SD card, like actual Micro SD. Power off. Hold both volume buttons and press the power button. You are in fastboot. Press volume down to highlight Recovery, then tap volume up to select it. Now do the option for update with zip. Choose the file. Watch it as it installs. When it fails it should state what was wrong.

I downloaded the update OTA but now I can't find it in the /Cache folder....could it be somewhere else?
On howardforums, the claim was the OTA was withdrawn due to 4g problems.

it will only be there when it is first downloaded. Once you try to flash it it is wiped from the cache. So you would download it when prompted. Then when it finishes and asks to reboot, choose you'll reboot and install later, now you can extract it from the Cache folder.

Bionic ICS Leak v 6.7.2233 (Android 4.0.4) [download link]

This is a leak for the 6.7.2233 update (Android 4.0.4) for the Bionic.
You must be on stock .905 to use this.
You must flash from STOCK RECOVERY.
Use of Safestrap is NOT recommended.
You may need to FXZ to .902, take the OTA update to .905 and then flash from STOCK RECOVERY.

installed ICS
Installed 6.7.2233 and it was pretty flawless. I flashed back to .902 and did an OTA update to .905. I haven't rooted yet but I hear there is a way to do it.
Couple of things I noticed
On stock launcher, when plugging in webtop it doesn't work. I got ADW and it works fine now.
Bluetooth seems to work better, wifi is WAY faster (I know this by doing speed tests a lot before and after). I can't speak for 4G yet but will report back when I know for sure how it's doing.
CPU is now running at 1200MHz vice 1000 and it doesn't seem that it auto adjusts to lower speeds like previous versions did so we will see how battery life does. Battery life seems fine so far though.
Any pics or video? Please post!
can someone please tell me how to update to this ? i have already unrooted with voodoo and when i go into recovery to install update it tells me it cant verify signature. i am on 905

I have been running this for 24 hours. In that past 24 hours, the data connection works worlds better than the cm9 of gummy roms I have tried in the pas 2 weeks. In those pas 2 weeks, whenever I hit a 4g zone, no data at all. Today I drove through different zones and was switching between the 2 without issue! Hopefully this update will help solve problems some of us have been having with a data connection.
are we supposed to used rsd to install this ics file?

I have tried several times but it keeps saying it can't verify signature. Do I rename it to update.zip?
Has anyone found a way to root after applying the update? My attempt at keeping root didn't work.

It's surprisingly easy, but I can understand the daunting task if you've never done any playing with the guts
Download the link at the front page to your computer.
Connect your phone to your computer and click on the "Mass Storage" Setting when the USB options come up.
Copy the downloaded .zip file to your external SD card. Don't worry about unzipping it or anything.
Once it's down, turn your phone off, then turn the phone back on while holding both the up and down arrows. This will boot your phone into what's called "Stock Recovery". To navigate Stock, you click down to move through the options, then up to select a choice.
Click down once (iirc) until your highlight Recovery, then click up to select
This will place you in Recovery mode, if there is nothing on your phone but an icon of android and an exclamation point, hold both of the volume buttons again.
From here, you will use the volume buttons to navigate, and the power button to select items.
Go to, Install update from external storage.
Highlight the .zip file you put there earlier
Wait 5-10 minutes.
Enjoy your ice creamy goodness 2-3 weeks before everyone else. Once you start it up it will "optimize the apps" for a bit, this is natural ICS behavior.
Now that you've flashed your own rom in custom mode, you can start looking at rooting and flashing custom roms. Personally I'd hold out until the developers have time to parse out ICS and update their roms. I believe even the current unofficial "ICS" roms are based on Gingerbread kernels that has been heavily modified.
Here you go folks. I put it up on my server which is much faster.
http://playeraffinity.com/files/Blur_Version.5.9.905.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip
I was going to put it on a download page and all that jazz, but I know you all want to get right to downloading it so all i ask is if you have any free time, check out the site my server is for, Player Affinity. There's a lot of interesting articles on there and you might find something worth sharing.
Once ICS is official on the bionic, I'll get cracking at an Affinity ROM for it.
