Official Google Case Causes Screen Input - Nexus 7 Accessories

A friend of mine just received his official N7 case from Google and promptly realized that it's made of conductive material that creates screen input if you close it with the screen turned on. Has anyone else experienced this?

Video 2:

I literally got my case from UPS 10 minutes after I posted this, and I can recreate the problem too. Here's another thread with some others experiencing the same thing:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...n7-case-play-store-causing-screen-freeze.html

Did you know that if I unlock my phone and put it in my pocket.... My pocket starts pushing buttons.. Its like a little gnome lives in my pocket and is trying to text Tokyo.
Tapping the power button seems to solve the problem.
I would suggest doing the same if you plan on using this case.

and here I thought this case couldn't get any worse

Thanks for your valuable input.
Your phone acts the way you explain because your pocket isn't thick enough to keep your leg from activating the screen. The cover on this case is quite thick, and it causes screen input regardless of whether your hand/finger/whatever is on the other side. You can take it completely out of the case, then touch the screen with the cover and replicate the problem. The case itself appears to be conductive - not something you really want on a touchscreen device.

I don't have the problem because I added a magnet to trigger the sleep and wake functions as I close the cover.

Then what would people ***** about? Seriously useless thread is useless, I've got the official case and other that being too much money is fine. Turn the tablet off before you close it, or don't press on the lid until it turns off, simple solution is well simple...case closed.

Hi sway40,
I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much for your unsolicited opinion of my post (I even clicked the little "Thanks" button!). I hope it didn't take too much of your time, considering I only asked if anyone else was seeing the problem, and not for your personal thoughts on whether or not it was a good post or subject. I also hope that you're not too upset; the last thing I want to do is make people on the Internet angry by asking what I think are legitimate questions. Going forward, before posting any accessory-related questions in the accessories forum, I'll be certain to post a separate question first, asking if it's okay for me to post my real question. Should I PM you first too?
Thanks again!

Thanks for the info...will wait for a third party cover that includes a magnet!

Kaiser turns off when in pocket bag

Hello,
I do not know what happened to my phone, but I think it has to do something with the pocket that came with the phone.
I put the phone into the pocket, and when I need it again, I usually wake it from sleep, but then I realize that the phone has been off!!!
Some weeks ago I flashed an original win mobile 6.1 rom in english language, while before it was a German rom.
Can someone help me please?
Thank you very much in advance!!!
Yours,
Carter

Does your bag have a magnet in it?
yes, there is a magnet
The screen rotation takes place via 2 magnets in the device, this has happened to mer were i use some cheap case and the magnet affects the screen rotation sensor. I have noticed situations like phone turning off, screen sideways, in standby mode...
Try using a diffrent case for a few days and see if that eliminates your situation. Try a case without a magnet.
SOS!

The case I use is a case that has come with my phone, it is a htc brand. Strange that the have not thought about this.
But I have encountered a more severe problem! While I am holding a call, the phone goes off out of sudden, sometimes it even takes time till it reacts on the power button!
I am very desperate.
Yeh magnets and electronics do not go good together.. I have a card holder that has a magnet and I have to make sure my phones in a pocket in my purse and not with the card holder. You might want to go have someone look at it.

hi,
I flashed back to my original rom and bootloader, and until now, my phone stays on, even in the pocket. Let us hope it stays like this.
May not be your problem, but i had all kinds of issue wish my phone shutting off when i was using an after market battery, and the issue was that unlike the stock battery, the after market battery didn't fit in completely snug, and so the battery would giggle around ever so slightly and restart itself periodically. I fixed the issue by using material to wedge the battery in there more securely. Just thought i'd share since others might find this suggestion helpful.

thanks for sharing, I have thought myself that it could be a battery issue, but I am using a stock battery.
HATE THE HTC SUPPORT!
First they just tell me to do a soft reset! This has not helped! So I told them! But they do not answer any more! How do they dare to loose a customer that paid sooo much for his phone?!
So they leave me with still one year guaranty left alone with my problems.
Anybody knows what to do?

Lockscreen bug with smartcover and battery drain

Hello everyone,
I bought on ebay this smartcover since I saw that lots of people were talking great about it (like being the best cover for Nexus 7). After some days of use, I found out that my lockscreen bugs quite a lot and I'm not always able to unlock my device if it's in the smartcover, and yesterday I found out a strange use of the system, like it drained my whole battery without using it.
Anyone is experiencing same issue? Shall I go for another cover?
Thanks everyone,
Tiwiz

I actually can't believe you just posted this, I've had this case for a couple of months and literally last night started putting the battery issue down to the fact that the case/cover may be waking the tablet when it shouldnt.
Also I've noticed that maybe like 50% of the time, when you open the cover it doesn't unlock, other half of the time it does?
Same issues?!

Seems were in the same boat here, as I went through 3 cases until I found this.
Loved it but these issues are doing my head in.
From what I can see, if you close the case, then turn it to its front, the front of the case is still raised.
This could cause the sensor to think its not closed sometimes?
I dno, just pondering.
But do it and tell me if your case does this, like if you look at it from the front and top, theres a gap between the case and screen.
I hope you understand what I'm saying there

Thats what I believe it is, due to the front part of the cover not actually touching the screen EVER, I'm just thinking that every so often, the Nexus just thinks its not there, wakes up and then the cover is activated again and then goes back to sleep, then back into deepsleep.
Thats my theory, but I'm still keeping the case, its great

I have another case shown with another problem, used to get random screen offs, then it become more worse over time, to the point whilst I was actively using the tablet the screen would go off constantly, i now use it it out of the case until now to take a photo.....guess what? I couldn't type in my pin number.
Makes me think that with my problems and the OP problems, may I know why the official cases from Asus don't have a magnet inside.
Just a thought.

I have more or less the same cover (mine has a leather piece that covers the bezel... which doesn't bother me). It does work well and it looks great. And I've had no issues with the smart lock (but my N7 is set to go into airplane mode whenever the cover closes, so that may have something to do with it). I would recommend it.

To be clear, I was talking about the one you posted, not the one from the original poster.
As I said, mine is a bit different than that one... http://www.hipstreet.com/hipstreet-asus-google-nexus-7-rotating-case/
The rotating is the best part of the cover. I know people who have smart covers that fold back and the magnets turn off the screen from behind. I can just rotate mine and avoid that problem. Also, as shown in the promo pictures, the rotating is good for standing the pad up in both portrait and landscape. When it's closed it looks like a moleskine notebook, so I can carry it to work and meetings and look professional.
That said, it did fall of the top of my counter onto a tile floor and landed on its side with no damage. No guarantees, but I was happy.
(And I got it cheaper than the MSRP from Staples Canada... $29 as I recall.)
I have the same case as the OP and I have issues with it locking itself when its open but that may be the magnet triggering the lock from the back side of the device. I've also noticed some battery drain with the cover closed, almost as if its being locked/unlocked throughout the day.

Nexus 7 Wakes Up When Picked Up

There was a thread about this somewhere but the user was ridiculed.
Now the same thing is happening to my Nexus 7.
I pick it up and it wakes up. Automagically.
The first few times I thought I'd touched the power button but no, it's doing it by itself.
Not every time but often enough to it appear like it's a feature not a fault/freak/haunted.
Anyone else experience the same thing?
EEK Now it's switching off when I put it down!
Define wakes up.
Powers on, or just the screen turns on?
Screen turning on is typically controlled by a magnetic field, like a cover with a magnet.
Or a game, watching the accelerometer...
Well I could delete the thread but I'll give you a laugh ..
The Nexus 7 is in a TPU case but it's resting on top of my leather case .... which has magnets in it.

wake up button misplaced
sériously i had this 2 or 3 times in 3 months, I have no case and I have no screen lock because I am at home.
But This could be a very good feature I would pay for it because it is very painful and boring to find and activate the wake up button when in the dark.
Most of the time it is opposite your available finger.

I'm really starting to hate the power switch

I'm forever fumbling around to find it.
I fumble and fumble, then think I must have the phone upside down and fumble some more only to realize I've now turned it up side down.
I thought I'd get used to it.
Not to mention I seem to be getting bits of pocket crap in between the button and the phone.
On my HTC EVO LTE the phone used to come on if I stooped down (I keep it in my fron jeans pocket) and I made little guards for the button to stop it.
Now think I'll have to glue on a bump on to the button or something.
It would be nice if they put a dimple or raised it slightly. So you could positively find it by feel every time.

I have same problem as OP. I have an Incipio case that has a cut out for the power/IR blaster. It also has a cut out on the bottom for the micro usb charger, which is almost the same exact size. I too have flipped the phone over several times. I may have to get the Mophie just for the simple fact that it has a raised power button.

Not sure if I understand right but you could do what I do and stop using the power button. What I do is rooted with bulletproof kernel I use the double tap the bottom of the screen to turn it on and then I can either swipe the back+home button to turn the phone off or use a widget called screen off on my desktop (usually do this since its more convenient). This works perfectly and is much easier than the akward power button

A good design everyone WILL naturally get used to. A poor design won't.
If my car pulls to the left and I can't get used to it, does that make it my fault !!! That's what your saying.
Looks like I'm not the only one having issue with it, so it is a the "Phones Fault".
Like I said a tiny dimple on the power button or similar so you can find it with frozen fingers in the dark. Would go a long way.
Small cues that help you have the phone oriented correctly would go a long way.
Weight, Texture, Dimples make the difference.
Maybe this app would help out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227516

IF your car was designed to pull to the left it wouldnt be the cars fault.
The recessed power button is a design, no fault of the phone itself.
I, and I'm sure countless others here have no issues with the power button.

I, for one, love the power button. Never once thought the button was hard to find or hard to press. I also love the tactile feel of this power button after having used a GNex, which I hated the power button placement - too easy to press accidentally.

magnet cover question

Hi all, quick question. If I root my nook hd, will my magnet case stop working? And by that I mean how it turns on when I open and off when I shut the case. Thanks!
It will still work fine with just a root. If you install a CM Rom then it will still work with a little hitch: sometimes opening the cover won't turn the screen on, so close it and open it again and it will then come on. It's a bug in every CM and CM based Rom. Not a big deal, really.

It is extremely annoying though and the fact that no one in a year cared to do anything about it is a bit frustrating. Sorry, open cover twice is not a "workaround".

Then fix it, you make it sound so easy like nobody has tried.
Really, double lifting the cover isn't some monstrous task that takes an aeon to do or burn 3,000 calories. Just lift drop lift. . It's literally 1.2 seconds.

I'm pretty sure no one actually did as I never seen any real attempt to fix it, answer to every complaint about issue was "open it twice and shut up".

You simply don't get it. It's usability and quality issue, not a question of energy.

It's not a usability issue though, is annoying at most sometimes but it never amounts to a feeling that I can never enjoy my tablet or feel as if a case with a cover is the worst creation for this device. You make it seem like this tiny, miniscule, insignificant bug is the crippling kegstone factor in using a magnetic case OR a CM Rom and you can't have both.

Well, it is only one annoyance in a long list, but the one I had to deal with every few hours for almost year now. Thanks but no thanks.

I have lost over 20 lbs just from lifting my Nook HD cover 2 times every time I want to use it. My just think if I lifted 4 times each time.
Just kidding, it would be nice if it was that easy.
I just bought a magnetic cover & using CM 10.2 and I don't seem to have that minor issue about having to open & close the cover.
Ok if I may ask a very simple & probably stupid question, how does the magnet make the tablet go into sleep mode or whatever it does?
Thank you,
Mark :silly:
I can't say I've had the problem of the device not waking up when I open the cover (Poetic slimline). If this would happen I just put my thumb on "n" or a finger on the power button, as I would if I didn't have a magnetic cover or when it shuts down with the cover opened.
If that's an annoyance, just go back to stock and problem is solved!

The n button and power button won't work. You have to close and reopen. I have the problem as well but while slightly annoying I can live with it.

That's odd! Wonder why it works for me. Could it be the builds? I always use Succulent's builds (or builds he present on his Iamafanof site)..
Do you have a link to his site?

It may be worth checking if your magnet is actually present and "strong enough."
For my Nook HD+, I have a third party cover which has a working magnet.
I recently bought an official B&N cover for the HD+ and it doesn't work at all (stock ROM).
Check ebay, i found genuine b&n magnetic case for 7 bucks there. New and in box, free shipping. There were several sellers had them and many cheap. Got mine auction on third try only bidder... There were so many listed it was quite easy to snag one.
And i am on cm 10.2 and it works just fine.
