my options for saving note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
I need a simple tips to avoid getting a bricked note
(already done my search & reading)
A fugitive from iPhone prison
My note is 1 month old
came with stock GB
Then upgraded to stock ICS 4.0.3 OTA
Then I root it without increasing counter
after that I used Titanium Backup to remove samy bloatwares
**I used uninstall instead of freeze**
no custom kernel is installed
Now I want to start fresh with stock 4.0.4 OTA
(complete Install of 4.0.4 and wipe everything)
(I even uninstalled the OTA update program)
My device has the eMMC bug
I didnt take a nandroid backup
What would you do to get clean full stock 4.0.4 on this note?
[Reminder: I searched and read alot]
Details are really appreciated

Read here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659768

Already read that thread and still uncertain about the best procedure
If this matter had no bricking risk involved i would try & error with a smile
But i can not take such a risk

There are many threads for this really..
- Backup your data that you want to keep to your PC
- Downgrade to STOCK GB via PC ODIN
- Wipes / Factory reset when on GB
- Upgrade via OTA / KIES

Rooting A Stock UK Note - Risks, Removal of Apps and ICS Update Questions

I have a UK Galaxy Note and have a couple of questions:
a) Is 'rooting' as simple as running Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0? (I have come from flashing a HTC HD2 which took a lot more work than simply clicking on one .exe)
b) Are the risks of 'rooting' as big as 'flashing' a new ROM in that the phone could become bricked (memory corrupted)?
c) For now, I only want to root my phone to remove the pre-installed apps. Would uninstalling any of the apps cause any problems with any part of the stock ROM?
d) Will a rooted phone with uninstalled apps prevent an official ICS update?
Hi there,
Before flashing a new rom get to know a few things first... Go through the thread of the developer who has uploaded the rom, you should know about installation procedure (which is very important) so that you don't end up with a costly paper weight and the features which are available/not working on the new rom. Then you may proceed with flashing a new rom. In your case, I suggest you go through this thread.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025....Here you will find a collection of stock roms with root so that you won't lose the original look of the rom, after which you can remove preinstalled apps with root unistaller etc etc(But be sure you don't touch the system apps which may crash the rom)... In case you want to revert back to the stock rom then you may find this thread handy....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025.....After you flash a rom with root your phone can't get any firmware upgrades and the only option is to revert back to stock rom....Hope you got answers to your questions....
Could someone else please answer my questions specifically?

A)Yeah.Rooting is simple.Just flash a pre-rooted rom(Development section) and flash cf-root kernel via mobile odin. But remember donot use pc-odin to flash any rom other than stockrom and the pre-rooted stock rom.
B)Yeah rooting is as risky as flashing because of involvement of kernel which need to be flashed.
C)Yeah Some apps might .A soft brick at the extreme. So do a nandroid backup and start experimenting with the apps.If it causes problem restore nandroid and you will return to the working state.
D)Nope.Removing system apps doesnot prevent ICS update. But it is not recommended to update whn rooted thru OTA or kies. Its safer to flash stock ICS through PC ODIN.
Finally confirm if your phone is N-7000 because I have not seen a uk-note till now...
A few questions
Hi Guys
I have a few questions to add if that's OK.
I just got my new note.. Sim free and in Ireland I had a Galaxy Nexus before and only had it two weeks, It was already rooted and flashed with another rom when I got it..
I'm not pushed on flashing a rom as i want to get used to the phone first.
I do want to root it to allow me to install apps I have downloaded on a nas drive that I have that I can access from anywhere.
My Model Number is GT-N7000
Android 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
I'm new to android so if anyone can point me to the easiest way to root and the full benefits that would be great..
Should I Root before I install apps? Or will a root not remove things I have installed? Apps? Pics? Messages ect..
Can I use Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0?
Thanks In Advance

Thanks for this . Would you think that an official OTA (or kies) ICS update would get ride of some of the pre-installed samsung apps and offer a cleaner stock android? If so, I might hold out for this.

Not sure of using ota or kies because Both are just crap and have never used for ages!!!!ODIN the best way to flash any stock rom.So through odin,Your old samsung apps are replaced with new ones but not user apps as far as this new ICS goes. But it is all good to do a factory reset after flashing any rom to avoid any problems later. But by doing this, you lose all your user apps

[Q] How to upgrade and downgrade from GB to ICS ?

Dear All
I have 2.3.6 GB stock rom with root and Franco #10 Kernel, and want to upgrade to ICS
the update is not available to my region, so I downloaded the German one (Europe region)
I made a full nand backup to use it just in case of any failure , and did a complete apps and data backup by Titanium Pro for all my apps and data
I read in several threads that I can do the upgrade via Odin PC ore Odin Mobile Pro (I have both and used both in previous upgrades)
My questions are the following:
1- I read that the ICS rom is non wipe, so which wipes should I do to keep my apps and settings and have in same time a no problems upgrade?
2- If I flash this another region rom, and later on my region ICS stock rom is there, can I FOTA update my G Note with my original region rom over the non-region rom?
3- I read also that Iam going to lose my root and I should use another file to root the ICS, so which file should I use? I must have root for some needed apps.
4- If I did not like the new ICS (for any reason) can I use my nand backup to go back to my GB rom (downgrade)? would it be as any restore I did before? If I do this restore should I find my root and my Franco kernel back or should I flash them back?
Thank you and best regards
Any reply

First of all use mobile odin to flash with ever root option... Then ul have ics stock with root... If it gets stuck at boot then u may have to do wipe.... If it boots up without any problem then ul have all the apps...
Regarding the ota... When u have root u wont be able to upgrade... And if u r not rooted then ul receive update to the firmqare to qhich u flashed... I mean if u flash a rom of india then ul receive updates of india only...
Regarding the ics to gb i too have no idea... But as far as i know... Bootloadera of gb and ics are different so dont mess with it.. Ul end up in bricking ur dwvice

[Q] A few questions about flashing stock GB

I'm currently on a LA6 2.3.6 gingerbread, stock, non rooted, and I'm growing quite inpatient with the ICS release dates, which won't happen anytime soon for my CSC, obviously.
If I flash one of the open stock GB roms (want to change my CSC to DBT or similar), will I get the orange triangle, and will my phone get recognized by Kies in case I decide to go for a pre-rooted one? Also, will data and calls work properly with a CSC different from my phone's original one(MSR)?
I just want my Note fully functional, yet be able to use it as if it was unmodified, if possible
I am sorry for the possible stupid questions, I just couldn't find any complete explanations/answers for these!

Backup efs if you havent already done so. See my thread regarding q backups its got a link to how to do that.
Now just flashing stock gb wont increase counters. I havent found any malfunction myself, but reading postst in this forum has tought me the outcome can be different for anyone wtf.
So I suggest make cwm backup of current rom.
Download stock dbt rom gb, flash thought pc odin. Mind you better flash pre december rom so you can root it with root only method. Mind update ics throught kies you need to be unrooted. So if root is not important, flash latest version ics dbt right away. Then change csc it will wipe data. Then you have a possible, not gauranteed ota rom.
Just dont do wipe or factory reset in ics or cwm on ics.
Make sure you have a way back for warrantee, i.e your current rom download it somewhere next to nandroid backup lol

[Q] ICS rooted - OTA/KIES JB update

Hi
The wife's Note is presently on stock rooted ICS running a custom kernel (can't remember which one of the top of my head). I want to update it to JB, but want to go down the path of least resistance (i.e. avoiding having to reinstall all the apps, etc).
I guess the first question is, can I update via OTA or KIES?
I presume if I update via OTA or KIES (I have an updated rom notification on OTA) I will loose root (even if I use OTA Rootkeeper?) and the custom kernel (reverting back to stock kernel).
FYI - not really fussed about re-rooting as wife doesn't really need to seem to need a rooted phone.
Thanks in advance!
If rooted with a custom kernel the OTA updates won't work.
Make a complete backup in recovery of the note
and
download one of the no-wipe, rooted Custom Roms and install it.
Thanks. I think I may do a total unrooted of stock JB.

Not really necessary. I repeat. Make a backup and use a no-wipe JB Custom Rom (like my own) and try with this.
Hi
Just a quick follow up, can I flash stock JB via Odin rather than Kies and avoid a wipe?
Thinking Odin, as am having problems with Kies recognising the phone (MTP error).
Flash the JB with PC Odin.

Pre-rooted GB with CWM no wipe?

Is the pre-rooted sgn_xx_oxa_kj1_factoryfs.zip mentioned in the rooting guide a no wipe rom? I found several pre-rooted no wipe GB roms without CWM, but it can be easily flashed too. I'm asking because i would like to do a backup right after rooting. At that time my data shouldn't be wiped already.

You can back up a rom if u have clockwork mod recovery.
I think this pre-rooted GB rom from dr. Ketan thread have cwm pre-installed. If u want u can take a nandroid back up as its having cwm.
And this GB roms are safe to wipe too. Actually i dont understand what u want. Can u explain.
if u want root+cwm in ur N7000, on ics or JB just flash Philz Kernel in stock recovery

I don't want to lose any data while rooting. That's why i want to know if the mentioned pre-rooted rom is no-wipe. I wouldn't be too happy about a backup of a wiped phone.
My GB is not directly rootable nor exynos exploitable.
When checking for updates i just get ICS offered. I never updated to that because of brickbug, no tethering and overall bad reviews. Also nobody could say for sure if that update wipes data or not. I don't know if once updated, i would be able to update to JB OTA, but won't go that way anyway.
I guess flashing a kernel wouldn't require any wipes. In that case i might would like to flash an exynos exploitable kernel and root it.
Look the ROM you mentioned should not be a root with wipe. And secondly, if you update to the ICS, there won't be any data wipe that's for sure. So if u want to root your phone on GB then do according to dr.Ketan's thread or else update to ICS and the root procedure is very easy and won't wipe any data for sure.
I just rooted my phone by flashing the pre-rooted rom and didn't lose any data.
As my phone rebooted already a few times while browsing the play store, i want to flash jellybean soon. I already did a (nandroid?) backup in CWM. Can i use that to restore my stuff on a freshly flash 'n wiped JB custom rom or do i need titanium for that?
Yes you can restore a nandroid backup which will restore your phone as it was when u backed it up. Titanium can be used to restore the apps from the backup too. Don't panic, you can try some custom ROMs too, check them out under the Android development forum for the note. You sure wanna give it a try!
I'm on ultimate JB now. Used a titanium backup to restore apps, data and my previous android ID. As my contacts haven't been restored, i used BackUpYourMobile which brought them back.
On GB my external sd was accessible via 'external_sd\', now it's not anymore, but via 'storage\extSdCard\'. I wonder if i can delete that folder now. Also some paths changed due that. Is there a tool to detect and fix those old paths?
