Download speeds - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I`ve only had my N1 for a little over a week and I'm loving playing with it. I've noticed however that the download speeds are pretty bad in general, particularly on WiFi where on my GNex I get very fast speeds. I'm wondering if there's something that's limiting the speed and if so, it is fixable? Perhaps flash a new radio? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks in advance!

Flashing a new radio won't help with the downloading speeds and, keep in mind, that the JB ROM for N1 is still in pre-alpha so don't compare it with the lastest GNex. The N1 is over 2 yrs old!!!

Oh yeah, I don't expect the same performance at all! I was just surprised at the striking difference in download speeds in particular. I had an Evo 4G and my roommate had a Backflip (both released relatively near each other) and WiFi speeds were faster=/ I've noticed it on my N1 using CM7.2, two ICS ROMs, and Evervolv's JB...so I suspected it wasn't a ROM issue, rather a hardware one. The only thing I could think to tweak is the baseband/radio firmware.

odex the build, only drawback is that you cant theme it after that.
that and a light overclock are both pretty good
Thanks for the reply! I am really new here. Can you point me towards an odexing guide??

i do have a theme for hero you and myn would be proud of though
Speeding up Android
If you free up some memory your vogue will be faster. I suggest uninstalling all the apps you don't use / can do without. You can also try the Fat Free build of android. I hear that it is faster.

it is mostly since it uses all the principles covered here its odex'd it has the fat cleaved from it, and via rogue tools you can overclock it
Yeah, I tried the Fat-Free build and its super fast..! DZO Fresh Froyo is already amazing, and Fat-Free froyo makes it even faster. The life that is put into this phone is unbelievable, and the support too! I remember when I used to use my vogue with wm-6.1 !

im not dissing the vogue as i owned a few of them but yeah if you get the hero you will notice a huge speed increase. even more so with a evo or epic. i know people want to keep their cheap legacy plans but sooner or later you will have no choice but to upgrade and pay more. 4g will be standard someday.

My phone is pretty snappy and stable considering it's a bit long in the tooth. I recommend the latest .32 kernel, Scooter's CM rls4c, and a mild overclock to 490 mhz. I don't keep a bunch of crapware apps and widgets on my phone and I recently trimmed down to three desktop screens.
It is my sincere hope that my carrier offers me a decent plan when I do bite the bullet and upgrade to a new android device. It's going to cost me an additional $20-30/mo to get a plan comparable to what I currently have and I really wanted a decent device with a hardware keyboard. Either the Epic or the EVO Shift will be in my pocket next...

yea keyboards are nice but htc phones with keyboards always suffer from poor design flaws, like the touch pro and the high failure rate of that (i even had problems with mine before i sold it), the G2 and it basicly falling open when turned upside down, i love htc to death but i dont trust anything they have with a keyboard at all

Anyone mess with the the mobile access point feature yet?

So this may be a legally touchy subject, but I'm sure it's possible to unlock the personal hotspot feature on the captivate without shelling out $20 a month to "the providers". A jailbroken iPhone can do it so I'm pretty sure my android is capable of the same thing.
Let me know of it's out there and I just haven't researched deep enough.

All of the custom roms have mobile AP for free.
Try searching next time. PLENTY of threads on this. Install titanium backup and figure it out from there. As it being not legal I'm not saying exactly how its done, but I will say its easy.

The last post hinted at the solution when you are on stock Froyo. If you flash to a custom rom, they all have the mobile hotspot feature, functional and free. I am volunteering in a place with no internet access, and I have used the phone for a couple months to give us spot access to download files and check email and do light surfing. I upped my plan to 2 GB while I was doing that, just to be safe, and have had no issues either with the phone or with AT&T.
poor poor att peeps...
Still gonna need some help with this. I wasn't looking to flash a custom rom. Just wanted access and i'm not finding any posts pertaining to such. I don't know why I'm so nervous about custom roms (maybe because there are do many I can't tell the difference between them). Can anyone point me towards the right post?

Sorry to bug you guys again. Is all wifi tether this slow or is it the process I used (titanium backup freeze)? I have my daughters iPod air hooked to my 3g, and updating the apps is taking forever. I'm opening up to the idea of roms if I can enhance the performance. I want some bragging rights!
My ears (or eyes) are open to your best suggestions for custom roms. Or another update to what I am apparently clueless about... wifi tethering.

I don't understand what you're talking about. However, I do know that the official Android MobileAP app is found in all custom ROMs on this forum and it's BLAZING fast if you get 3g/H signal where you live.
You should really try a custom ROM. A really refined one is Cezar's v4 Continuum. You'll have to do some reading, but it's not so bad. Use MyBackup Root to save/restore your apps, it's free and works just as well as Titanium Backup.
Hdspa is only noticeable faster for uploads in my experience. With tethering my speed is never great its usable but not at a level I would want to do much work through.you might see some improvement with a custom rom but nothing mind blowing

I guess we've had varied experience. I can load several webpages and be syncing my dropbox and I do not notice the slightest bit of lag.
Make sure you're using a very fast modem like XXJVK. Shoman has a great test of the speed of various modems here.

[Q] Planning on getting Optimus; just a few questions!

Now i know the sgs2 is supposed to be the best, but its also the most expensive. whereas the LG has a way better price point. so i was wondering a couple things; it would surely lead my to getting the Optimus.
anyway a couple questions;
1. is it true that there are models with 850/1900 3g bands? i've read around but nothing solid.
2. how hard is it to root? read it up on the dev threads and 1-click works fine?
3. when you use cyanogenmod, does it lag and FC like the stock firmware?
4. how's the camera quality using the 1080p 30fps mod? does it skip frames/double frames?
5. how is your battery life? please give 3g and screen on details.
sorry if these questions are really redundant and have been posted before, just getting to wits end as my N1 died and i can't decide this whole duel core debacle.
thanks to those who answer!

1.) No clue sorry :|
2.) One Clicks Work fine It's easy to root it with SuperOneClick for example
3) I wouldnt recomment CM7 roms, but rather Froyo optimized Modaco Roms.
I'm using the Fr17 Vanilla edition and all i can say is, its the most stable thing ive ever seen on a mobile phone. I didnt even have lag on stock either, it depends on how new your phone is.
4.) Working great, no skipping or smearing
5.) Fr 17 Vanilla Edition, Using stock baseband. Im using the phone on a daily basis, a few calls, lotsa Whatsapp, 10-15 sms a day, 2 hours of browsing when im on the train, my battery lasts 2 days. Pretty good if you ask me, especially considering its a dual core phone.
Dont expect a long battery life when playing Tegra 2 optimized HD games though, but thats self-explanatory

why would you say not to use CM7 roms?
thanks for the rest of the info!
In my opinion, CM7 builds arent really stable, just see the comments in the specific rom threads.
I don't want to badmouth all of them though, some people have issues with them, some dont. I can only speak for myself and im more than happy with modaco roms
For me is a lot more stable de CyanogenMod rc7.1.0 then the stock LG roms ... with officila rom, I got randoms reboots and freexes almost daily and now with the cyanogen, since the 27 that is was published i haven't had a single reboot or freeze!!! ... also the phone is faster.
According to my box it says WCDMA 900/1900/2100 GSM 850/900/1800/1900
So 1 is a yes? Or is there some way i can check?

another question. really important... does the optimus 2x (specifically) work on AT&T(aka Rogers) 3g bands? cause i know for sure the g2x doesn't... but the optimus has that 1900 band. so just want to know if it works for any of you on AT&T/Rogers.
THANKS IN ADVANCE
There is a confusing model of Optimus 2X, that supports the frequencies you want.
It's still an Optimus 2X, but it is apparently a P990h, not a P990, so be careful what you flash on it.
Also, CM7 is brilliant compared to stock.

Just start downloading them and trying them, giving them about 2 days before you decide if you like it. Several factors to consider are call quality, signal strength, battery life, and GPS reception. Since your using ICS roms, you must use the modems packaged as CM7/MIUI. You try using something else and it won't flash.
Look >>HERE<< for all the modems you would ever want to try. (FWIW, I like BVJWW2)
Like mrhaley said, there are a variety of things that affect it. JK4 worked great for me when I was in Florida, so I would start there. JW2 is nice also, but it seems like people can't hear me as well with it.

JK4 FTW! I've stayed with it since Eclair and it still works great now I'm on THS ICS. Great starting point to try out.

Hello guys, a few days back I flashed teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Captivate (BUILD 17) on my wife's phone, but she has told me that her apps are not syncing outside of a wifi connection.
I'm thinking it might be something related to the modem.
So I'm looking for any advice on which moden should I load, considering we live in Venezuela? Any tips?

Someone listed the "UGKC1" modem in use in Panama. You might consider UGJL2 or UGKG3 also, near by. Search "soggy cashew captivate modem" and check the map. Update your own listing if you find something that works.

Thanks for the info guys, had to flash elite v. 10.1 rom, this was the only rom that would enable data service.
Tried:
AOKP-captivatemtd-build-35
F1-galaxynexus-galaxys-20120502-beta2
Nostalgia-b31-v5.4
Team ICSSGS
CM9-20120510-nightly
CNA-1.5.5
Dark Knight v5.5
Elite v.10.1 was the only rom that connected data service.
The good things is that my wife likes it as is right now, which makes it easy on me. Hehehe.

[Q] What stable ROM would you recommend?

I recently purchased this 8.9 tablet and extremely surprised how lacking the developer community is, i come from the desire hd and im updating my phone weekly sometimes even faster, but i came here and aokp/cm are apparently buggy and the threads are outdated with some even months old!
Im used to seeing pages go into 1000 pages, but here theres not even 6!
Anyway.... its a surprising change and im skeptical if its worth even rooting at all! Any recommendations?
All the ICS Roms pretty much have the same bugs and will, until the Official Update. I've tried all of them and they're definitely faster and more customizable than stock obviously but if you're looking for a 'fully functional' Rom, either try Overcome (which is a really good HC Rom) or stick with stock for another month or two. I went back to stock, rooted, removed the bloatware and apps that I wouldn't use and I'm pretty happy with that setup until something more stable comes along.

+1 instead of complaining be thankfull of what you have if you cant contribute to anything then just keep that to yourself because that wont help. .
Yes, definitely be thankful. Check out the gtab 7 plus community. Now that's lacking!
Anyhow I'll suggest kallt kaffe's cm9 june 8 build. The latest build I've read has some issues with the device powering itself off. All in all, I've been very impressed by kallt kaffe's cm9 build/ports!
Stock ROM is ok until ICS update. Just flash the motley's kernel, overclock it to 1.4-1.5 ghz and you will be very surprised by the speed of it. Also benchmark scores will increase significantly and touchwiz will be smooth.

Agreed. But instead of stock, I recommend Overcome 3.2.
Used HC stock rom for 2 days and it was very laggy. Went straight to the ICS ROMS which are much better. Didn't test Overcome 3.2 though. Performance between AOKP and CM9 are pretty much the same but CM9 has MUCH better batterylife. Would definitely go for CM9 which is official so you can flash nightlies all week long
