SD CARD problems - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Okay so at random times, I will get an error that says I have taken out the SD card when we all know I couldn't have as I would need to take off battery.
I have tried formatting the SD card, but it still does not work. I have also tried moving it from side-to-side and front-to-back while my phone is running (battery door taken off) and it wouldn't present the error. So I am thinking that it can't be the SD card reader of my phone.
It also had a trend once when I am using the camera and it tried to access my gallery and error came up. Also, when I installed Ol File browser and I tried browsing through ext_sd and error occurred.
I am not rooted or anything as I just got this phone the other night.
What can this be?

Try a different card and see if the problem continues. If it does, the phone is defective. If it doesn't, the card is. And yes, it could be the card reader.
Gallery is known for causing problems, I don't use it at all. Most folks I know use QuickPic, which is a much faster and more stable app. OTOH, a bad card reader would cause all of those problems.

[Q] Having to format SD card constantly

I've been getting the "Blank External SD card. SD card blank or has unsupported file system." message every time I restart my phone since the day I purchased it. The only way for me to get the message to go away is by letting my phone format the external SD card, but even after doing this I am unable to create any folders on my external. It gives me the "creation failed" error message. My current SD card is a 4gig HC SD card. I used it in my HTC Tilt2 before I bought my captivate and never had an issue. (I actually ended up losing everything I had on it when I put it in my captivate because of this issue) Does anyone know how I can fix this so that my external sd card will actually work and stop requiring me to format it?
I had tried searching the forum for anything on this but only found items relating to 3rd party roms.

Have you ever formatted it on your PC? i know that it can cause problems if you choose the incorrect format type.
No, I've only ever had it in my tilt 2 or my captivate.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Have you tried a different SD card? Sounds like you have a faulty one. There are no settings in the Captivate that require a reformat for anything. I know this sucks, but I can't think of anything else.
Unfortunately I don't have another card to try though I haven't tried it again in my tilt 2..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Try it again in your Tilt. I am willing to bet it will not work. If true, stick it in your PC, format with the NTFS file system and use it as a ready boost tool. That way it is not a complete waste.
Ready boost with a micro SD is not advisable. It will be the same as nothing..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Would you rather have a wasted 4 gig SD or use the 4 gig towards ready boost? I never said it was going to do much, but to some people a little is a lot.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So I tried another sd card and my phone didn't even recognize it, even after a reboot. I'm guessing it's time to call up at&t?

Try to transfer data thoruhg a card reader. Especially if it is a large amount like 3-5g of music. Moving data through the phone is fine in short bursts but I always founf it to be cleaner and faster through a card reader.

Speaking of memory cards, how did you fix your 32gb Woodrube? I have 3 sd cards failing on me and not sure why. They work for a bit then fail again.

Man it sucked big time for so long but I was able to find a corrupted file on there and had to use File Assassin from Malwarebytes.org to delete it. Even then, it didn't want to go. I reformated it full fat and used the "slow" process that filled in 1's and 0's. It happened when I went to CM6.1 the first time.
Think I may have borked it myself during an bad install and then it would never work correctly. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard (I don't like GParted b/c you lose all your data. With MTPW, your FAT data is still there when you want to resize yout ext/swap) to set my partitions and once that was done, I would try to reinstall that same file. Wasn't until I figured out that it was causing so many problems, but it was the only ROM that would boot up. If I used it and then wanted to go to Wanhu or HM's ROMs (this was a few months ago), when I would restore those, it would break the partition and would never boot up. Wouldn't loop in the traditional sense where the animation would run then disappear and the run again, it would just continually run.
Not saying it is CM6 or anything like that, I just think I got a bad download or operator error and a corrupt file hit my card. I just reformatted to full Fat and no partitions and it works fine (for now). It was only the partitions that would not work. I would run MZor sd-ext test and it was horrible with all the errors it showed. I had been deciding to format full fat anyways and stay away from partitioning (I don't and never have used swap), and I have to say I think it is really better that way. I only have about 50+/-apps so my Dalvik isn't even close to filling up and half of them I don't even use.
OK thanks buddy! Looks like thats what I might have to do. So what would be the best method to move Apps over then with just fat32? If you have any advice for me I sure would appreciate it

On my wife's XT, i am just using the native Froyo app2sd (settings>manage apps>select app>move to sd [there is also an app in the market called Move2sd enabler that will move "non-movable" apps to the SD card]). Don't move any widgets to SD card though. On my Vibrant, I have't moved a single one over to the SD yet and have 1.5g left on internal.
FYI if you get an error when downloading an app from the market and it says,
"App not installed
Unknown Error-18"
Don't freak out, it is a known Froyo bug. All you have to do is plug your phone into your computer and look in the .Androidsecure folder (make sure you have show hidden folders checked on your PC) and delete this file.
smdl2tmp1.asec
You can do it through terminal on your phone too but sometimes it repopulates if you do it this way
su
rm mnt/secure/asec/smdl2tmp1.asec
Sorry for the thread hijack but it is kind of a fix for some SD problems.
the original microSD that came with the phone is kinda shady
mine had some problems, had to format it twice to get it working right
a friend of mine even worse, after a few use it died completely

6th SD card corrupted by my phone?!

Hey guys. I'm having major problems with my nexus. I'm on cm7.1 and my phone keeps telling me my SD card is an unsupported system file or something. This is the 6th time this has happened and it keeps happening on different roms. Miui, sense, cm7, oxygen, cm7, hell it happened on a stock rom with no mods what so ever. I am going absolutely f**king crazy as it has made me lose countless photos that can't be replaced. This happened on a top of the range 32gb SD card TWICE, So it can't be ****ty SD cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It won't help you fix the phone but have you tried putting the card in a card reader and checking if it still recognizes the card and it's content?
Do you "eject" your phone from your PC before you unmount?

[Q] Anyone else having and issues with the sd card with the new update?

Just upgraded my vivid to 4.0 and loving it. completely stock and everything (problem with a driver on my computer and can't connect). After it all got done doing its thing it gave me a notification that my sd card was removed. so i turned it off and removed the battery to find that my sd card was still tightly in the slot. so i removed it and placed it firmly back in and turned on my phone. after a few minutes it did it again and now in the storage settings it says the sd card is unavailable. I'm kind of annoyed because that's where all my music and what not is but it still plays the music stored on there through the music player. I don't know whats going on and i just wanted to see if it was just me or others had the same issue
thanks for your time!!

ive seen this before with the infuse...
the only thing i can think of is get one of those sd card adapters and check it with your comp...if you dont find a problem with it connecting with the comp..i would make a back up and format and see if that works. thats how i fixed it for my buddy on his infuse. or maybe try another sd card to see if your phone is the culprit...good luck
Gotta be your sdcard, I've connected mine to pc and had no issues. Remove it and put it again, or find an adapter for it and try again.
Otherwise pretty impressed with the new ics update!

I had a similar issue. After the ICS update, I was flipping through my home screens to see what was different and noticed that my Photo Album widget was not displaying my photos. Come to find out, it couldn't read the SD card. I looked in SETTINGS/STORAGE and noticed that the SD card was not mounted. I mounted it and VIOLA, all of my photos were there again. I have rebooted several times and the SD card has remounted like normal.
Thanks for the help I just backed up my sd card and erased it and now it recognises it

Thanks for the tip to mount the SD card. It pays to search the forum.
I think there is a problem with ICS and the external SD card. Twice recently, my SD card would not show up. I took some pictures, not realizing they were being stored on the internal storage rather than the SD card.
Mounting the drive from Settings works, but it should not be necessary.

SD card read failure

Every so often I get an error saying the sd card is corrupt or not working or something, and photos or music on the card will not open. After a hard reset, it works fine. Is this common? The card is basically brand new but I suppose it could be that.
So I am having a lot of things acting weird. Apps not working, sd card failure... I need to do a hard reset about once a day now. It is becoming a little frustrating. Any suggestions?
So I opened up the sd and sim tray, took out the cards and put them back in. Seemed to fix the problem for a number of days. This morning I had the failure again and I opened the tray and I noticed that the SD was a little off... does anyone else have this problem? Of the card moving around? Any idea how to fix it?
I may just have a bad sd card, now that I think about it.
Thank you because now i know i am not the only one with this problem!

Hey actually I got a new sd card and it has ZERO problems now. Taking the card in and out was only a temperary fix. i think the real problem was a bad chip. I had the PNY 128gb one ($30) and now I am using the SanDisk 128gb one ($40). I would only buy SanDisk from now on.

Unlucky many people have the same problem and no, your sd card is good... there is something wrong with the hardware or software of the huwawei..
I'm having the same problem with my Huawei P9 lite, both the phone and the SD card Kingston32GB are new, i even bought another SD card because i thought the first one was bad, but the problem persist. I haven't found a solution yet.
I have the same problem. I do not think it is specific to the card. I think the card is dislodged and moves around in the card tray and thus gives the issues.
I wanted to but a new card as well, but think this will not solve the issues. I will try sticking the card in the slot somehow to see if that solves things....
I've had my P9 Lite for a month now, and I've only started getting the SD Card corrupt error since last night. Unmounting, and mounting it again fixed it briefly, but then I got the error again while trying to take a photo about an hour ago. I've just formatted the SD card to see if it will fix the problem. I'm hoping for the best.
Have any of you fixed the issue successfully?
I get this when I copy a large files to the microSD card, movies for example (1080P FLAC 4GB each or something). It still works fine though.

Just an update: My SD card gave in completely last night! :crying: It worked fine after formatting, without any errors, until it just stopped working, so I lost a few days of pictures. Anyway, the SD card isn't even being read in my laptop, so it's definitely a goner. I'm currently using a different memory card, to make sure that the same doesn't happen to that one, to make sure it's not my device corrupting the cards.

Sounds a lot like my issues.
After having the phone P9 lite for about half a year, i'm on my second sd card.
2 weeks ago, i had the message it was bad once or twice, but now my phone is acting weird. A few apps (Twitter, netflix, pokemon go) will just start and close instantly sometimes. Apps will just crash. And everytime i reboot my phone, all that has happened after the 6th of July is nowhere to be found on my SD card.
It took me a few days to realize I might have some problems.
But reading this thread i might invest in a new sd card before doing a factory reset.
Problem is from bad quality sd card not from the phone, exactly like u are connect usb flash to your computer,if sometimes u have problem with the usb flash ,u should blame the usb flash not your computer.your phone is just a reader, try to buy good quality sd card

Did the same thing happen to your first SD card? I actually only started getting the issue when I updated to Nougat. I noticed that when I reboot my phone, just before it switches off, I see the notification that the SD card was removed abruptly, so I think it could have something to do with the software that doesn't safely eject the SD card before the device restarts or shuts down. I might be wrong though, but it's just a theory. I don't restart my device too often, but when I sometimes insert my SD card into my card reader, I get a prompt to say my SD has errors, and needs to be scanned.

I had a Kingston one, something i consider good quality.
But you make a valid point and i'm currently looking around for a new one.
It seems that for now my problems are solved by an old one i had lying around.
Saw SanDisk being promoted.

No, it behaved quite differently. That escalated from one of two error messages in a week to multiple errors daily.
And it was really corrupted, couldn't format it on the pc or anything.
But how is your current card behaving? All is well?

I had a 32GB (Class 4) Kingston SD card as well, which is one of the brands Huawei recommends to do software updates with. I had that card for 4 years, if I remember correctly, and I've used it with 3 devices, including my P9 Lite, which was the only device it gave problems in (only after updating to Nougat).
At the moment it's still behaving. I got a 32GB Class 10 Sandisk a week or two after my previous post, and so far it's fine. Like I said earlier, when I put my SD card into my card reader, I get an error message to scan my SD card, which means my device doesn't eject my card correctly, before rebooting. I still believe it is either an issue with Nougat, or EMUI 5.0. Again, this is my theory, according to my personal experience.

For me the problem also seems to be solved in the mean time with a new sd card.
Don't know if i like your theory though, since it would mean it is just a matter of time.
On the other hand, google does not show that many complaints......
Time will tell I guess.

I don't like my theory either, lol, but today when I was taking photos, I tried viewing the photos within the camera app, but it took a while to load them, and my gallery app stopped responding. I'm hoping it doesn't have anything to do with the SD card though, but I can't help being sceptical.

I changed from Samsung to Sandisk, yesterday after os update same thing. Took out the card, apps default to internal storage and works. Reseller is no help say it's virus. I am sorry I gave up my Samsung edge. May be should have bought iPhone if only working wit internal storage.
I have an expensive SanDisk card and it's worked fine for over a year, just started happening to me too now though...
