Hello people of xda
I am really lost here, about mtd roms and non mtd roms
so I know that mtd is a partion scheme which is used in ics roms.
but my question is : I am running overcome with overcome kernel but lately I have been thinking to upgrade to ics(aokp rom) or JB(cm10) so can i upgrade without having to restock and if i upgraded to ics can upgrade to JB without restocking??
and if i do a restock would i lose the unlocked bootloader ??
p.s: i got the tab from my friend and he told me that he already installed cm9 but before that he did a restock then he installed overcome
THx for help
Yes, you can upgrade to ics without restocking.
Yes, from ics you can upgrade to JB without restocking.
No, from GB onward no locked boot loader. That us froyo issue.
Edit: he is right.
To return to GB you need restocking.

and thx for helping
sorry i am a noob
u can go for jb directly over aokp bt for overcome now u need to restock.

Perhaps we didn't make it clear. Overcome is GB based.
And all GB rom are non-mtd.
From mtd to non-mtd , always requires restock with repartition in Odin.

Don't know what you are talking about as "above problem".
CM9 RC1 has no update.zip, it is as it is and I heard of no issue.
now. MTD and BML (samsung's partition scheme aka NON-MTD) are partition tables.
That is a specs of how a piece of disk should be sliced up and how to describe the slices.
You only need to know that CM9 and AOKP ROM uses MTD partition while all Gingerbread ROM for our device uses BML (NON-MTD).
When you flash ICS the first time, your partition will be converted to MTD.
To convert back to BML you need to use Odin/Heimdall with stock ROM that has pit file and you need to select to repartition the device.
Overcome ROM is a famous GB ROM modded by Team Overcome.
http://www.teamovercome.net
"Overcome method" of restocking refers to the set of downloads and guide that Team Overcome recommends to people to correctly restock their device.
It is, in my opinion, the best way to ensure you have no problem install ICS.
I am now recommending you to do that and see if you have problem in CM9
So
http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.

missing files at
http://tabfirmware.com/2012/01/romk...e-7-series-v4-1-0-♫-overcome-kernel-v4-0-0-♫/
Please note:
- you want to restock using GB-stock-safe and the Odin included in the package
- you then flash overcome kernel 4.0 tar using Odin
- you don't need to wait for the robotic voice to complete the ext4 conversion, just force reboot to recovery and use the recovery to flash ICS from sdcard.
- you need to flash ICS twice because round one converts to MTD and reboot
- you need to flash gapps after you flash ICS
Thanks for all the pain u have taken replying me. I faced problems like camera doesn't work at all.force closes. couldn't find external micro SD card So. My question is that if I want to flash any ice from can I directly do it through CWM ie by clearing caches and instlalling from zip.
And can u plz give me the link of cm9rc1 from link which u said u didn't have any prob...and to apply this or any other ics based rom or jb rom what's the procedure.
PS: I donot want to come back to GB (restock) but just wanted a stable ics.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
I am not using CM9 RC1, so no, actually I said "I heard of no issue".
About restocking. I still recommend it.
You already come this far and manage to install CM9 RC1.
Others has no problem but you have.
Maybe restocking will clear the problem.
So u want me to come back to gb..OK I have seen that procedure, but what if wanted to flash other ics roms like aokp. Should I restock and then flash???
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
actually, frankly speaking there should be no need to restock.
I just don't know why you face so much issue with CM9.
Yeah, try AOKP by Stimpz0r. I am using it myself.
Place the aokp build #40 and gapps in external sd.
Do the three wipes, (data, cache, dalvik).
Then flash aokp, then gapps.
Good luck.
So how ur experience
Btw can u give me the link??? Of aokp stable build

hello guys,
I am looking for someone who is able to flash my friends Samsung galaxy s i9000. It has still the Froyo software on it. I successfully flashed my to ics but I am not able to do this with the other device. It has a strange basebuild no. I'm not sure how to do this.
Can anyone help me? I would be really thankful.

Is no one able to help me?
The baseband is the modem. Should make no difference to which rom you flash. Is it on eclair, froyo or gingerbread?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Sorry, just noticed you've said froyo. You just need to flash stock gb rom, then the semaphore kernel to match for cwm and root, then you're good to go for any custom rom you wish.

This smartphone has JM1 installed. Sorry but I am an absolutly newbie. I only was able to flash my one with a step by step guidance.
I haven't found anything about JM1 How to flash etc.
I am a little bit desperate now ....
Search for a stock gb rom (jvu/jw1 are recent) with gb bootloaders and follow the flashing instructions using odin.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Sorry, where do I find something like this? After flashing with Odin I will be able to put ICS from teamhacksung on it?
See perka's jvu thread in dev section, there is an odin flashable download.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Once flashed, boot up, turn off, then flash cf-root kernel for jvu - use the search function to find thread or go to read first couple of pages of perka's thread for a link.
Once you're rooted, you'll be good to go.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Is it this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 ?? You mean JVU is compatible with JM1?
Thank you for your help!
If you're friend needs a rom i'd start by either flashing Darky's ROM 10.2 RE with full instructions including a vid tutorial on that thread
or
Flash Jetpack v8.2 with instructions and a vid tutorial in that thread.
The reason why i recommend those two ROMS, is they're particularly easy to flash and have good support.
I'd start with Darky's ROM and then move to other ROMS from there if you want, because it's a fast, very stable rom with a brilliant community for support. Plus you dont need much expertise to flash it, and it comes packaged with root and clockwork mod recovery installed, so you dont need to do anything to prepare your phone for flashing. This ROM does it all. If you wanna move off from there, well then you're all set. But if you're friend just wants a fast stable ROM, then he's all set with Darky. If he wants a bit extra speed, then move to Jetpack V8.2 it's stable and no bugs and its very fast and features thunderbolt! tweaks preinstalled, which are custom tweaks written by a guy called pikachu01 and they improve the SGS very well. They dont require too much expertise to install, but this saves you hassle and gives you all those added benefits from thunderbolt!.
If you're really keen on this teamhacksung ICS build then go to the darky rom and then from there install teamhacksungs build. Just make sure you read carefully to know what you're doing.

Flash a stock gingerbread rom. Then flash a custom kernel like semaphore. After that you can install ics.

Hi guys,
I was a bit confused about flashing and many questions stormed my mind.
Ok my current situation is like this --> I have a rooted galaxy note.
I am on stock ICS 4.0.4
I have kingdroid v3.0 and cynogenmod 9 with me.
I know basics of flashing and will be able to flash them.
My question is that,
Is kingdroid rom safe from the emmc chip bug?
Which method is safer- flashing through ext storage or through odin?
If kingdroid is unsafe, then is it really worth flashing CM9?
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Kingdroid is based on CM/AOSP right ?
In order to flash that you need to be on GingerBread, GB is safe from the emmc bug so you wont have any issues.
flashing through CWM or ODIN are at the same safe / risk level, Theres a chance you can brick your phone using either.
However, You will only get the brickbug if you are on a Stock ICS kernel, You shouldnt encounter this as you will be flashing from GB.
Just follow the instructions on the ROM thread and you will be fine.

I agree with the azzle.
Steps:
-Dowgrade to GB
-Flash the abyss kernel [which will also "install" CWM]
-Wipe and flash a rom...

I dont know anything bout this Kingstuff, but CM9 is great, or paranoid rom if you want the tablet/hybrid mode stuff.

Im just stating here that I will generally know what you are talking about, im not a noob when it comes to android modding/roms/rooting, however i have always been worried with my note because ive seen lots of threads on devices being bricked.
basically i want to root my note, get CWM recovery onto it, and then flash whatever ROM/s i choose, without getting my phone bricked in the process.
i want someone to advise me on the best way to go about this whole thing, thankyou!
my device:
Samsung galaxy note (not sure if international or not, i bought from kogan.com.au, i live in australia, and have a telstra sim in it, however i think kogan ships the intl model)
android version: 4.0.3 ICS (stock)
baseband: N7000XXLPT
KERNEL VERSION: 3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
BUILD NUMBER: IML74K.XXLPY
carrier: telstra (prepaid, and phone is unlocked)
the main confusion i have here is finding the correct threads for my kernel version, however i couldnt find what i wanted, and was unsure of which was safest, so thanks all for helping me out!

Hello Good Dr. I am about to try rooting via method 1.Rooting with stock recovery. After this am i correct in saying I should flash notecore kernel ? I would be using Mobile Odin to do this as I dont have Windows PC.
What would be safest method to get to ParanoidAndroid JB or CM10 JB from there ? After the Kernel is flashed. Would I have to downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom first then flash ParanoidAndroid ? So your method 1 > flash kernel > downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom > ParanoidAndroid ?
Kind Thanks.
If you want to downgrade to prerooted rom then no need to get root, except you have no option to use pc. In this condition just root n use mobile odin to flash prerooted rom. After successful flashing wipe cache n data and flash cusyom ROM.

So please just to clarify Dr.ketan. If I follow your method 1 to root my ICS Note and then I flash safe notecore kernel via Mobile Odin then I could flash ANY custom rom ? No need to flash a pre-rooted GB rom ? If this is correct would I need to wipe cache and data before flashing custom rom ? Please could you clarify which cache I should wipe ?
Thank you very much.
[Resolved via DM. Thanks Dr.Katan]
After flashing note core.you can.flash custom rom if that is ics based.
Otherwise i recommend to flash preroored gb rom first and wipe all (cache, data and delvic cache)

Mobile odin can't flash zip.recovery.files. You can flash tar file, and prerooted gb rom is in tar. You can use mobile odin for that

I have read a lot but I'm still a bit confused...
Hello dear friends,
I'm just a newbie here, so please be patient ...
1) I'm planning to root+CWM my n7000 and also (and finally) want to flash CM9.1 (stable) on it. Right now I'm on GB 2.3.6 (not directly rootable) it's ZSLA2... for what I understand from Dr. Ketan's rooting guide is that I have to first downgrade the device flashing a pre-rooted+CWM'ed GB ROM from Chainfire..... ok, no problem.... but, my main question is: once I already have this pre-rooted gingerbread rom, can I (must I) do a hard reset/wipe prior to flash a custom rom?... and, can I FINALLY and DIRECTLY flash the CM9.1 + Gapps files from that chainfire's gingerbread rom version/kernel?... or do I have to upgrade again to a new GB ROM and then flash the CM?.... or even further: do I have to upgrade to a newer GB ROM then to an ICS ROM and only then I would can flash the CM file??....
2) The obligated dumb question: Once I finally flash CM9.1 ROM, it's a must (or a recommended practice) to flash a safe kernel like Franco, Speedmod, Notecore (for safety and/or performance)??
Thank you for your time! cheers

1. always advisable to do all three wipes ( data , cache, dalvik) in CWM if you are on GB and planning to flash another rom from there.
--- yes, you can directly go from pre-rooted Gb to CM 9.1 with g apps
--- when you are on CM and want to go to a custom ics then best to follow the method specified in opening post of the rom thread by developer. all CM kernels are safe to wipe and flash from generally...
2 . Franco , notecore, speedmod are all Touchwiz kernels. a CM rom will not boot with it, its not compatible.there are other CM kernels available that you can use with it, refer kernel repository by Chasmodo

TW and Cm roms have varied/different and many simillar features
you must read through the rom threads for identifying them and choose your rom accordingly
I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but I couldn't find it by searching.
I'm running 4.0.4 rooted, and would like to unroot it since I have to take my Note to be fixed on warranty. I rooted with temporary CWM and because it's considered to be dangerous now, can I run the Unroot_SuperUser-Busybox-Uninstaller-Update2-signed.zip from Dr. Ketan's root/unroot thread from stock recovery ?
Just wanted to make sure before I do anything stupid. And yes, I know I could flash to stock GB, wipe and flash to stock ICS but if I could unroot straight from recovery it would be a lot easier. Thanks in advance.
Yes you can, but remember if you have flashed custim kernel then first replace with stock. As well if you have update supersu from market, then first uninstall that from setting -appl -all

first of all, I searched and found a lot of confusing information and I'm hoping someone can help me directly like this...
I have a rooted P1000 running froyo:
baseband P1000XXJPZ
kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected]#1
build FROYO.XWJMK
I downloaded the SGT bootloader patch app found on xda and it says:
device: GT-P1000 european/international/unbranded
bootloaders - signed!
signed: PBL, SBL, kernel
not signed: SBL_backup
assessment: can only flash signed firmwares
and it gives me the option to patch bootloaders
if I understand correctly, I can flash cf-root kernel via odin and get cwm and then flash any rom?
if so, what about the bootloaders and the right cf-root to download?
most of all, my goal is to upgrade my tab...the tv out function is a must for me so the ics and jb are out, right? if I understand right, the tv out feature doesn't work with them?
what about gingerbread and honeycomb?
what to do?

do you know is it safe considering the bootloaders and froyo on my tab?
in your other thread you read about using overcome method.
The GB stock safe v5 rom files contains GB bootloader.
By flashing that you shall have GB bootloader and from then on you are good.
It is still best to upgrade to GB before installing CWM by any means you choose (although overcome kernel on top of GB stock safe v5 is the safest and sure way).
And please don't run the bootloader patcher once you are on GB based.

You should be able to flash gb without patching.
Because the package is a stock gb Rom jq1 ( Italian).
You may want to go all the way to overcome Rom 4.1 by following the complete guide to the end.
That will be a modified Rom and tv out working.

you can, but you probably want to forget about those rooting(which makes no difference) and putting custom recovery on it.
That path is fraught with failures.
The reason is, recovery is part of a kernel in this tab. If you find a custom kernel that has custom recovery, likely it is not a suitable kernel for your android.
Just follow my signature to use Overcome method.
Follow the guide from page 7 or 8 onward.
It guides you on flashing a Samsung GB stock rom that works with overcome kernel.
From there you can use overcome's CWM recovery and flash the Paranoid ROM.
Okay so stock rom with an overcome kernal/recovery and from there I can go into the recovery like any other CWM and flash the paranoid rom? Btw my tab is still in Froyo lol
