Is Cyanogenmod the only Froyo option for the CDMA Hero? I'm thinking of upgrading from the Sprint 2.1 firmware. I have several questions:
Really Important:
Can I downgrade to the original Sprint 2.1 firmware without breaking anything? I really don't want an expensive phone-shaped paperweight if anything goes wrong.
Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done.
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod?
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off?
Do I have to root my phone?
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea?
Is giving root on a per-request basis?
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?

Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done? the Froyo rom yo usaw is the wildfire port and its in major alpha form right now. There is no fully operational Froyo sense rom for the hero yet
Somewhat Important:
Can I install the wifi tethering app on 2.2 Cyanogenmod? YES im using it right now
Does Sprint notice if you tether and cut you off? NO there is no way for them to see yo u have root and are using it
Do I have to root my phone? YES in order to go to CM6 or any custom rom you need to. ALong with wireless teething
Isn't giving root to potentially malicious apps a bad idea? Of course there is always a risk for anything. Thats why you nandroid before installing anything or before making setting changes.
Is giving root on a per-request basis? YES..superuser will pop up asking for request for any app that asks for request..you can allow or deny
Can I remove the stupid Sprint boot animation?YES, Cyanogenmod CM6 removes the sprint boot logo with e android cyanogen mod one.

And you can All you'd have to do is RUU
If all you want from Sense is the dialer, there is always Dialer One on the Market. I have been running more AOSP-based ROMs than I ever really ran Sense, so when I finally got bored with the stock dialer and gave it a shot, I didn't even notice it was supposed to replicate the Sense dialer, ha. It's a hell of a lot more customizable, and I think it's much "cleaner" looking overall (especially if you have it set to hide the green dial button in the contact list, and NOT have the keypad when the dialer is open by default, and taking up at least half the screen).
That Wildfire port is old. This is the current ongoing 2.2 Sense port, if you're into that sort of thing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834840
Okay, that was exactly what I needed to know, thank you. After reviewing the various pages, are these the correct steps to get 2.2 Cyanogenmod up and running?
Root phone
Backup apps/SMS, etc.
Backup using nandroid
Revert to the 2.1 .5 (NOT .6 or .7) firmware
Flash Cyanogenmod
Restore app/SMS backups
Install GApps, Sprint Apps, Sense port (as needed)
hello the only question i have is about the froyo 2.2. i Installed CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1 on my hero 200 and its running great only problem i found that i have is i have no flash support on my browser. what should i download to get my browser back in running order as far as going to most of the sites i used to that had a flash media player embeded? I tried adobe flash 10 but, from what i searched it looks like to me anyway that it wont work with this phone and never will? any ideas on what i should do next

Yes, the Hero really can't install full Flash 10.1 because the default specs just won't handle Flash. Supposedly its possible with some overclocking and/or JIT enabled, but even then most ppl say it's not perfect.
We can install a Flash Lite plugin to browsers....try searching for that either on the market or through Google.

Threadjackers.
I still have the same phone, a year later, and I would love an answer... However, I updated to build
Code:
2.31.651.7 CL258838 release-keys
and baseband
Code:
2.42.01.04.27
Can I use the RUU method and root or would I have to completely reset to Sprint's 2.1 and lose everything? Thanks for putting up with my questions.

You can root with .7. I used Regaw's last time I did after an ruu to .7 build. There are great Gingerbread roms now. Aosp flavored like Jaybob's Rom which has the newest .35 kernel baked in; cm7 has begun using that kernel in their builds as well ( although it might not be the newest yet). You can download titanium backup to back up apps and data (sms too). Just follow the directions in the op of whatever Rom you are looking to install.

It worked! That was nice and painless, just don't have your Hero plugged into a USB hub with a dodgy cord like I did. I'm going to go and disable OTA updates as described in the old tutorial. Should I install Cyanogenmod or aosp? It looks like some of the Hero wiki links are pretty dated now, and the only aosp 2.3 link is to a 2.3 aosp labeled unstable and the thread mentioning that the dev quit working on it. I'd love a recommendation on how to get a stable 2.3 install running, I mostly want Exchange sync and tethering.
Id reccomend jaybob rom or kush I'd say jaybob since he still does update from time to time both r still awesome

I'm waiting for a replacement on my bricked Vibrant and I am running my G1 right now. I figured I would update the rom since I'm going to be using it for a little while. Now I am running CM 4.2 and the last time I flashed this on here I had like 20 steps to do and needed a pc. Now with the use of clockwork recovery and everything else available I'm assuming I can get away with flashing away from home and the use of a pc. I notice some newer roms with custom kernals available which is what I'm aiming for but I am not sure if I should grab the latest available CM or if other devs roms are more updated. Will I need anything else other than CWR since I'm already rooted? What are the steps I need to take to accomplish this?
Thanks in advance

I see some roms have "requirements" as that frozo rom has requirements for SPL, radio and ext4 partion. I'm pretty sure all this is out dated on this unit and I don't think I'm on ext4 partion I don't remember converting any data when I flashed cm 4.2

Just got this tab, and want to upgrade it from the crappy Verizon firmware. Would like the advanced features and root, but it must be stable for work and it must do 3G and/or 4G.
Apparently I have to install a ROM that is specifically for the SCH-i800 and not for the P1000? So how do I identify which ROMs are suitable?
I used to use CM7 on my Nexus One and now use MIUI which I think is great. Experiences on either, or some other flavor?
I am aware that ICS is available, but have the impression that it is not complete or stable. So I'd just as soon stay with Honeycomb or maybe lower as long as it can be relied on.
OK message received, there is none.
This matches my research. CM9 is shot through with bugs, and MIUI development is dead. No other contenders.
So I guess I stay with the factory firmware, root it, remove the crapware and set up security.

UGH, thank you JT. I am having a helluva time with this thing.
Trying SuperOneClick, but it does not recognize the device. No one says, but I suspect it depends on ADB. ADB apparently does not have the drivers for the SCH-i800, and I've no idea where to get them.
The Samsung sync software would not install in my XP running in VirtualBox -- drivers failed to install. So I plan on just putting files on the SD in another machine since I run Debian exclusively.
And there doesn't seem to be an alternative recovery like Clockwork or Amon Ra, but maybe I'm wrong.
Pretty much given up on flashing any better ROM, although I know you've done some good work, maybe for CDMA.
I'll check out that more applicable forum.
I also have the SCH-I800 from Verizon and the only ROM that I found that works with barely any issues is the GB 2.3.5 Galaxy Cube 3. You can find it here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...galaxy-cubed-3-full-rebuild-11-21-11-a-2.html
If you have any questions or if you find any new working ROMS please let me know. Good luck.
I need a bit of urgent advice if possible. Having waited patiently for Samsung to release ICS for the P7310 which has never appeared in the UK, I'm trying to flash to JB (latest AOSP version) from the stock 3.2.
I've installed CWMOD 5.5.0.4 ok, and copied the update rom and gapps to the root of the tab. I've gone into CWMOD recover mode, wipe/reset and then selected the rom to install. It starts the install, then fails with the system error 7 message (seems to be fairly common). It obviously started the install but now I don't seem to be able to boot the tab into 3.2 anymore, it just sits at the boot logo and doesn't get any further. I'm happy to try another ROM (maybe CM10), but I need to transfer it to the device first, and ofcourse I can't do this within windows at the moment. Odin still runs and can talk to the tab, but I'm a bit lost at the moment.
I'm a bit new to all this, so could really do with some help.
Flash the stock Rom.with Odin. You can find it at sammobile.com. it'll bring you back to stock.and.you can start over again. You're soft bricked right now.

Cool. Thanks for that. I guess I just select the PDA option in Odin, and let it do its thing.
Any idea why this happens? I'd read a couple of threads about going from HC to ICS first, then to JB. Is this a requirement, or optional?
I'ver had similar problems finding a Rom that works on my i957. Never did find an ics that worked. I'm running jb from nrvate, but I think its specific to the i957. And, yes, flash just like you did the cm recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using xda app-developers app
Really appreciate the replies. I've managed to get the tab back working under 3.2 (stock rom downloaded from SamFirmware), so that's a start. I still want to upgrade to JB if possible (or ICS if not). Am I likely to experience the same problem again? Is it worth going to ICS first? I've downloaded the stock US ICS rom, which i can flash using Odin. I can't see why this wouldn't work on a UK spec 8.9 wifi, but can anyone confirm if it does?
So, I'm back at square one, but really want to try and get this sorted.
Did you do a clean install when you tried to flash the jb Rom? I.e. factory reset, format/clear system and data. If not that probably is the problem. There should not be any benefit of flashing ics before jb. The one difference between the two is you most likely will have to flash a gapps (Google apps) package after the the jb flash. Not sure where you got the Rom, but the developer should have the gapp they recommend and instruction on how to do the flash. Every jb to Rom I've flashed has the gapps package flashed after the Rom and before rebooting.
I'd stick with a Rom specific for your device. I hard bricked my phone with the wrong Rom once. The US Rom probably does not have the correct radio for.you in the UK. I only use WiFi so don't care too much if I have the right radio or.not.

I've just tried again, and have hit the same problem, and have tried the AOSP rom and the CM10 rom this time. I did a wipe/factory reset beforehand, but the installer starts then just aborts with 'symlink: some symlinks failed' E:Error in /sdcard/<rom file name> (Status 7). Obviously the tab 8.9 doesn't have an sd card slot, but I thought the rom must be aware of this.
Where am I going wrong?
You might try to flash a different version of cwm I don't remember now how I found this link, but here is a link for Overcome_CWM_Recovery_v5.1.2.6_P73xx.tar

just flash in Odin, like the ROM itself (in PDA section)

If reading that reply right, one specific stock rom does what's necessary, trouble is, that's a US stock rom, and I'm in the UK. Already had it confirmed that it wouldn't be good to install a US rom on a UK tab. Loads of people has flashed their tabs, so it can't be that difficult! I've just tried Overcome CwM v5.2.1.6 with the same AOSP and CM10 roms, but same error
Ok, silly question time, but does the tab need to be rooted to install these new roms successfully?
You don't need to be rooted, just the recovery installed. Not sure why you're having problems now other than I had a hell of a time getting a Rom installed too. I'd try a different Rom. I tried some yesterday and didn't get any of them to work well. At least you've learned how to recover from a soft brick. I've learned that lesson too, to many times!

Hi, dont know if this will help, but I have flashed the US ICS rom on my Swiss Tab 8.9, with no problems. There should be no issue with worrying about the wrong radio as stated previously, as the 7310 is the WIFI only model, so there should be no issue with 3G. The only thing which causes some issues is the screen flicker issue. If you flash the US gingerbread first, then the ICS, it seems to solve the issue. For mor info check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573548&page=50
Good luck!
Aaarrgggh! Frustrating, now I'm just getting 'hardware id not found' when I connect the tab to the PC!!! I can browse the device in Windows, but of course, Odin won't connect. How difficult can this really be!
I've already uninstalled and re-installed the Samsung USB drivers, tried a different USB port etc, but same result.
As it stands, the tab is working, but on that horrible v3.2.
I might be getting somewhere, but nothing's easy! I have moved everything over to a laptop we have, and have gone through the whole process again. I installed CwM ok using Odin, copied over the AOSP beta13 for the 7310, and this time when I installed the ZIP, it said completed ok. Good so far.
I then rebooted, and while I see the Samsung logo, the screen then goes black and stays that way. I've left it ages, but it doesn't seem to get anywhere. I can still reboot it and get into download/recovery, so that's ok. Am I doing anything wrong? I did the wipe/reset beforehand, so It's not obvious why this is not working.
Quick update. I can get ICS running (CM9 works), so that's good. It does look like any JB rom (AOSP/CM10) just cause a blank screen on reboot, which is wierd. I've re-downloaded the ROM's just in case, but no dice. Install completes ok, and gapps reports no problems.
I often don't get a boot animation, just the black screen. Every once in awhile the animation comes back. Seems totally random. I'm using nravates jb Rom on the i957. Other than that it runs great.

I have a Verizon SCH-I800 that is running rooted stock 2.3.5. I have been getting OTA notices to update from EI04 to MC2. I have searched the web and found where one user successfully did it on plain stock. He says it is much smoother. It is still 2.3.5.
It fails when I try letting it update on my rooted stock, so I have been removing the update zip from cache so it won't try. But it keeps redownloading it.
Anyone else been successfully updated?
I am considering doctoring the update zip to remove the offending items that cause it to fail and try flashing that with my 4.1.5 CWM. But I just want to know if it is worth the effort.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
I went ahead and modified the update zip to remove the recovery patch and the kernel patch since I am using the kernel and recovery from the cubed3 ROM (overclocked and custom CWM) and I did not want them replaced. Flashed it with my custom CWM (4.1.5) and seems to be running okay. Too soon to know if better, but seems to run okay. At least it should stop the OTA downloads.
It is still 2.3.5 with the EI04 baseband but build says MC2 now. And it still has root.

After running for a while now with the update, it does seem smoother, especially when viewing pages with graphics or pictures. My Facebook app is very responsive now and it seemed to lag before.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
Well, I have a tale of woe. After using the updated system for a while, I discovered that root was broken. Su and superuser were still there, but not completely functional. So I tried to use my CWM to restore back to my prior setup. It would not boot after the restore. So I tried to use heimdall to reflash the rooted stock ROM. Heimdall failed to connect and I tried many things that I won't go into, but the bottom line is I bricked my device.
So my solution was to get a brand new VZW Galaxy Tab 2 7". I rolled my data plan over to it. I had been considering doing that anyway because the old GT was getting cranky sometimes. My case sort of fits and all my accessories work and the 4g LTE is blazingly fast.
don't dooooooo it
I was running el04 rooted and accidently ok'd the update. upgraded my tab into a fantastic paperweight
hadda find a recovery & learn heimdall just to get it usable again
on the bright side, I'm quite liking cyanogenmod
I'm on a completely stock i800 but haven't taken the update yet. Any recommendations? I don't use the tab for any real work, it is more just a convenient toy I got from someone who moved on to a better device. I prefer not to brick though...

If it is completely stock and has not been rooted, you have no worries letting it update. Users on other forums have reported that it does run smoother and faster after updating. Only rooted users have an issue.

Update error on Rooted 2.3.5 sch-i800
i have an i800 galaxy tab and I have it rooted on stock 2.3.5 and I am trying to download some update that VZW has for the tab. It looks like it is updating but it never does just flashes some screen with the (Android man with a triangle and exclamation "!"). then it just freezes on this screen and I have to hold power and reboot. I usually reboot and clear cache. I don't do a factory wipe but I do clear the cache. Is there a work around for updating a rooted 2.3.5. ROM?
